Ralph Vaughan Williams had the inspirational idea to put together the stirring music from Holst's Jupiter movement and the poem written by American ambassador Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, which was found on his desk when he left office.

SAT 00:30 Serial Offender: Arnold Schoenberg's Twelve Tone Adventure (m0022kng)
Composer Arnold Schoenberg devised a means of composing using each of the 12 tones of the chromatic scale as equals.
It transformed the way in which music was created and perceived.
So why does Schoenberg remain a controversial and divisive individual?
And what about the other aspect of his legacy - Schoenberg's challenging compositions and how a desire to perform them to critic-free, private audiences gave the gatherings a whiff of elitism, unwittingly contributing to the siloing of subsequent modern classical music.
Why is his complex music not performed as regularly as other composers' works?
Schoenberg once told a pupil:
"Today I have discovered something which will assure the supremacy of German music for the next 100 years."
To an extent, he was right - his pioneering system and compositional style have bled through into commercial music since the early part of the 20th century, most
notably in popular cinema, modern music and advert jingles.
In a world of musical plurality, should we consider listening afresh to contemplate the beauty and complexity of Schoenberg's work?

The Le Fanu Ballads
Neil Brand has bridged the two time periods of Sheridan Le Fanu's 19th Century ghost stories and our world today in this supernatural adaptation.
It begins in a basement nightclub in the heart of Dublin called Sheridan's.
In its dark brick interior, a small stage is surrounded by tables, the MC takes to the stage and a beautiful young woman, Nuala O'Brien - the Siren of the Second Sight - sings her ballad. Her eyes scan the upturned faces in the audience below her, until they fix on a face.
For four of the people who come to this club, a Royal Naval sailor, an au pair, an artist and a judge, this visit will change their lives.
They will find themselves trapped in a story sprung from the tortured mind of Le Fanu himself.

As he crossed the finishing line at the London 2012 Games, winning his fourth gold, the crowd gave a rousing rendition of Rule Britannia.
Indeed he rules the waves with such a ruthless will to win it seems somewhat contradictory that on dry land he comes across as an unassuming bloke from Cornwall.
He was eight when, in a duffle coat and wellies, he made his first solo journey in a little wooden boat. Ever since sailing has been his obsession. He's brave, strong and skilled, but it's his tactical nouse and maverick streak that sets him apart.
In 2013’s America's Cup, he turned a 1-8 defeat into a 9-8 win for the US. Whether he can do the same for his home team may be his next big challenge. He says:
"The desire to win is still the same as ever ... if it wasn't there, that would be a worry. Motivation has never really been a problem for me."

Will Self ponders the origins of our insatiable thirst for bottled waters.
How did mineral water become such a valuable commodity and is it a luxury the world can no longer afford?
Will's a confirmed fan of mineral water - yet he's puzzled by its enduring appeal when H2O flows freely from the tap.
In the first of five episodes, he investigates the history of five different mineral waters and the spa towns from which they spring.
He's joined by 'water sommelier' Martin Riese who believes that mineral water should be regarded as a connoisseur product, just like wine. Riese serves 20 varieties of mineral water in his boutique hotel in Los Angeles.
He begins with the story of Perrier, which comes from the south of France and sold 1.6 billion bottles in 2019. Perrier was first marketed by Englishman St John Harmsworth who bought up the spring in 1903.
Will investigates why Perrier took the world by storm and asks Nestlé, the brand's current owners, what they're doing to address widespread concerns about the environmental impact of their product.

I Was John Lennon's Trauma Surgeon
Dr David Halleran is a trauma surgeon.
He held John Lennon's heart in his hands after he was fatally shot outside New York's Dakota buildings in December 1980.
Halleran was a third-year general surgery resident at New York's Roosevelt Hospital when an unidentified man with four gunshot wounds to the chest was brought to the emergency room. But Halleran didn't recognize the victim and began trying to restore his vital signs like any other patient.
During this time one of the nurses said, "That looks like John Lennon." Halleran was not so sure.
Halleran, a Beatles fan himself, describes the brief time he spent with Lennon as he desperately tried to bring his heart back to life, including massaging it in his hands.
This sudden meeting in the most tragic of circumstances became a remarkable event in Halleran's life as well as a defining cultural one for Beatles lovers around the world.

In the heyday of Hollywood, there was only one place to be if you were an aspiring British actor – the Hollywood Cricket Club.
Jim Carter tells the story of the club’s glory days.
This was when Errol Flynn and David Niven flashed the willow, Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone waited for a tickle at slip, Boris Karloff kept wicket, and Elizabeth Taylor and Olivia De Havilland were in the pavilion preparing the cream teas.
The club was presided over by C Aubrey Smith who played for - and captained - England in a test match against South Africa in 1899, before moving to Hollywood to pursue a career in the burgeoning film industry. His bushy eyebrows, beady eyes, handlebar moustache and towering presence made him instantly recognisable. He featured in 113 films during a 30 year career.
Smith commanded any visiting British actors to play for the team. Famously, when Laurence Olivier arrived in Hollywood to start filming Wuthering Heights, he found a pair of flannels in his hotel suite, and a handwritten note from Smith saying:
“Net practice – tomorrow at 4”.
Actor Jim Carter - a proud ex-Chairman of Hampstead Cricket Club - explores the links between the Hollywood Club and cricket’s controlling elite. It was rumoured that MCC bastion Gubby Allen once dated Joan Crawford after meeting at a match.
Director Sam Mendes explains how cricket glued the community together, and Jim meets the man who took Boris Karloff to The Oval test match of 1953.
And discover the connection between the Hollywood Cricket Club and the foundation of the Screen Actors Guild, the union which protected the rights of those working in the film industry.

To Put It Another Way
Roberta’s networking as Michael’s part-time, unpaid manager is finally paying off and she is beginning to get her husband some serious industry traction.
She lines up an audition for the prestigious topical panel show, To Put It Another Way. Unfortunately, this lands Michael in a bear pit of bullying stand up comedians who are used to the gladiatorial nature of these shows. Encountering a bitter, aggressive stand-up is enough to put Michael off being a comedian for good.
As the restructuring process at work comes to a climax (being re-interviewed for the job he already has) Michael is at a very low ebb.
Feeling like a comedy failure after acting as a punch bag at the panel show run through, he is now certain he is for the chop.
In spite of the battering he received in front of an audience at the TV run through, he receives encouragement from stand-up comic Natalie Duke, who gives Michael an idea that might change everything. Could he really could give up the day job?
Roberta is pushing Michael hard to take the plunge and use the platform his Room Next Door following has created to forge a comedy career, with her as his full-time manager, of course. But it seems that she is far more keen to ditch her secure day job than Michael is, especially when his boss at the kitchen worktop company delivers his plan to reorganise the company.
Will Michael take the plunge? Will Roberta take the plunge? Will you take the plunge and give it a listen?

The 1981 Ashes
In 1981, Mike Brearley - 39 years old, retired and greying - took over the England team in the middle of a six-match series, already one-nil down against the Australians.
His predecessor as captain was still in the side, but the side had not won a game for a year and that captain's poor performances were partly to blame.
On his first two days back, Australia ran up another huge total and Brearley's own side collapsed. Amidst baying newspaper headlines England were 500 - 1 against winning the game.
Yet Brearley's team achieved a victory to rival any in sport, which galvanised the nation and saw many who had never been interested in cricket before glued to the events on the pitch as Ian Botham led the team to the front pages.
Brearley himself goes back to the archives to tell the inside story of what remains one of the most remarkable summers of sport there has ever been.
As the Royal wedding, the rise of the SDP and the inner city riots all came and went, the cricket united the nation.
Hear from the players of both sides including Botham, Border, Willis and Lillee.
Plus the memories of Sam Mendes, Donald Trelford, Scyld Berry and Gideon Haigh.

Virginia Woolf's classic story celebrating the link between nature and humanity set on a sweltering summer's day in Kew Gardens.
'One couple after another with much the same irregular and aimless movement passed the flower-bed and were enveloped in layer after layer of green blue vapour, in which at first their bodies had substance and a dash of colour, but later both substance and colour dissolved in the green-blue atmosphere. How hot it was! So hot that even the thrush chose to hop, like a mechanical bird, in the shadow of the flowers. Instead of rambling vaguely the white butterflies danced one above another, making with their white shifting flakes the outline of a shattered marble column above the tallest flowers.'
Likened to an impressionist painting, memories are stirred and snapshots of lives filter through the gentle hum of the garden as couples flit like butterflies past Kew's sumptuous flowerbeds, their conversations dissolving into flashes of colour, shape and movement into the steamy atmosphere.
Author Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is regarded as one of the foremost literary figures of the twentieth century, one of the greatest innovators in the English language.

'Australian wanted for Woodhall Spa Cricket Club'. Such adverts can be found on any number of English cricket club websites. All over England, small cricket clubs welcome foreign players for the summer season, committing themselves to supporting the players - with work or accomodation - on the understanding that they'll bring a sparkle to the score sheet.
This documentary follows one such exchange at Potterne cricket club in Wiltshire and weaves in its rich and fascinating history - which has seen some noble names playing in obscure places.
Chris meets Zimbabwean cricketer Dylan Higgins, who's come to this quintessentially English village club direct from Harare. The team captain is Graham Gaiger, who runs the construction company that provides Dylan with a job. Will the incoming sporting hero meet the expectation of the club? And how do overseas players go down with the locals?
A fascinating, light-hearted observational documentary with a backbone of social history, on what happens when a new face is brought into the bosom of a tight band of sporting fanatics.
