Broadcaster and author Alexandra Wilson explains that the opera Turandot is the story of Prince Calaf, who falls in love with the titular Princess. In 'Nessun Dorma' Calaf expresses his determination to win her hand, ending with that extraordinary refrain 'Vincerò!' or 'I will win'.
Paul Potts won 'Britain's Got Talent' in 2007 performing 'Nessun Dorma' and recalls singing it to over a million people at the Brandenburg Gate on New Year's Eve in 2010.
When Italy locked down in March 2020, hairdresser Piero d'Angelico played 'Nessun Dorma' from a five-story window above Cambridge railway station to show solidarity with his home country and the Italian community in his adopted city.

So he's back on the market. As is his house. So he's currently living in his father-in-law's spare room in Bury. The only person who understands him is his Gran, living in luxury in an old folk's home in Warrington. Oh, and his producer Bryn but this might not be a good thing.
Despite all this mess, Justin always remains positive. Every new day is a new opportunity, "When life throws you lemons, make lemonade".

Frankie Dettori
Champion horse racing jockey Frankie Dettori is cast away by Sue Lawley.
Over the past two decades, Frankie's won more than 2,000 races including most of the classics at home and abroad and has been Champion Jockey three times.
The son of a famous Italian jockey, he was brought up in Italy but sent by his father to train at Newmarket when he was 14 years old - 18 months later he was winning races.
In 1996 he won seven races out of seven in a single day at Ascot - a feat that has not been achieved before or since.
But in 2000 he thought his luck had run out when he and fellow jockey Ray Cochrane left Newmarket in a light aircraft - only for it to plunge to the ground moments after take-off. He thought he was about to die and on coming round in the wreckage was not sure whether he was alive or dead.
The event left him undecided as to what to do next. He was a hugely popular team captain on BBC TV's A Question of Sport for two years, but a chance remark from one of the contestants who thought he had retired made him realise he had to focus on being a jockey.
He returned to the sport with a renewed vigour and became Champion jockey once again. Now a father of five, Frankie plans to retire at 45 and hopes that by then he will have won the Epsom Derby - the only major title that has so far eluded him.

The Turtle Dove Pilgrimage
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects The Turtle Dove Pilgrimage with singer Sam Lee and Will Parsons of the British Pilgrimage Trust.
Sam and Will lead 11 pilgrims on a journey across Sussex tracing the origins of the iconic folk song ‘The Turtle Dove’.
Over 100 years ago, composer Ralph Vaughan Williams travelled through Rusper in Sussex, collecting the stories and songs of the locals he encountered.
He stopped at the Plough Inn, where he set up his Edwardian recording equipment to capture the songs of the pub’s landlord, whose crackled voice and haunting melodies can still be heard today.
Vaughan Williams transformed one of the humble folk songs, The Turtle Dove, into a choral hit – extracting the song from Sussex and exporting it to the concert halls of London.
This Pilgrimage seeks to return the song to the land from which it was taken.

The Good Old Days: The Politics of Nostalgia
Gazing back with misty eyes seems to have become a national past time. Why are we all so nostalgic? In this programme David Aaronovitch delves into the archives to examine how politicians have exploited our love affair with the past and encouraged the notion that it’s possible to reclaim it and return to some kind of state of grace.
A recent Demos poll found that a majority of us feel that life was better when we were growing up and that our communities have declined in our lifetimes. And that's not just in our country. As we stand at the end of a long period of de-industrialisation and on the cusp of huge technological change, people across the developed world seem to be feeling the same need to cling on to the past.
David argues that there are policies on both left and right that seem to be backward looking, whether it’s grammar schools for the Tories or renationalisation for Labour. Do policies like this – even if they never materialise – act as a brake on newer ideas?
Our penchant for nostalgia is illustrated by our love of TV series like Dad's Army, Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife and The Crown. They often offer a rather comfortable version of the past, but what do they tell us about how we see ourselves and our history?
Any discussion of nostalgia raises questions of identity and belonging. With the help – amongst others – of left wing singer/songwriter Billy Bragg and journalist and historian Simon Heffer and using recent film releases, David examines how much the Second World War has shaped our notions of Britishness and how those images were mobilised by politicians on both sides in the Brexit campaign.
We also learn why other European countries can't look back at the Second World War quite so easily and why nostalgia is such a fundamental part of the human condition. David also talks to Barack Obama's former deputy national security advisor about Donald Trump and his promise to "make America great again".

Angela now does the very same thing, nominating objects that she would choose to send on with her as mementoes of her life, and asking the audience to share items they would take with them, all acting as prompts for contemplative, heart-warming and captivating comedy.
Angela Barnes is a vivacious, critically acclaimed stand-up comic from Maidstone, Kent.
After a career in health and social care, at the age of 33, she decided to pursue a long-held ambition and give comedy a go. Within a couple of years, Angela and her witty worldview had won the 2011 BBC New Comedy Award by a public vote, secured a weekly star slot in Channel 4's Stand Up For The Week and appeared on numerous radio and television shows including Loose Ends, The Now Show, The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4), Russell Howard's Good News (BBC 3), and Mock The Week and Live at the Apollo (BBC 2). Lord Christian Brighty used to be the most notorious rake of the Regency. But after a hazing ritual for a new chambermaid led to a self-inflicted cannonball injury, Brighty, compelled by the chambermaid in question - the uneducated but forthright Babigail – resolves to mend his ways. Accompanying him in his quest are Babs (elevated beyond her station to a chambermaid-cum-adviser role), and his butler, Mr Churlington (although Churley would actually prefer everything to stay exactly as it used to be).

Released in 1986 on 'The Queen Is Dead' album, it's become an anthem of hope, loss and love.
As a teenager, Andy listened to it with his father, as he drove him to work. They had a moment of connection, and when his father died suddenly a few weeks later, the song took on huge significance.
When her young son was ill, Sharon Woolley drew strength from this music as she sat by his bedside in the small hours of the morning.
For comic artist Lucy Knisley, the song got her through a bad break-up with her long-term boyfriend - and it's meaning changed for her when unexpected events unfolded.
