SAT 00:00 Soul Music (b013q20t)
Series 12
Spiegel im Spiegel
Exploring the impact that Estonian composer Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel has had on people's lives.
Written in 1978, just prior to his departure from Estonia, Arvo’s piece for piano and violin is musically minimal, yet produces a serene tranquillity.
It's in F major in 6/4 time, with the piano playing rising crotchet triads and the violin playing slow scales, alternately rising and falling, of increasing length, which all end on the note A.
The score of the piece looks deceptively simple, but as violinist, Tasmin Little explains, it's one of the most difficult pieces to perform because the playing has to simply be perfect, or the mood is lost.
"Spiegel im Spiegel" in German literally can mean both "mirror in the mirror" as well as "mirrors in the mirror", referring to the infinity of images produced by parallel plane mirrors.
The music inspired visual artist Mary Husted to produce a set of collages called "Spiegel im Spiegel" which in a roundabout way, led to her being traced by her long lost son.

SAT 00:30 Every Day in Every Way (b01mqq6f)
Positive thinking gurus and hypnotherapists aren't the only ones familiar with the phrase:
'Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better.'
It's reputation today is that of a trite, rather ineffective 'feel good' relic of yesteryear but the phrase, and the man who conjured it up have a fascinating history.
Writer Gillian Darley explores the work of the Frenchman Emile Coué who, though a mere pharmacist in his native France, came to be one of the best-known figures of the post First World War world.
His visits to England and America were followed by record sales of his books which encouraged advocates in the ways of auto-suggestion.
The scientific community are dismissive of his place in the development of psychiatric thinking and development.
Gillian reveals reports of one event in which he caused chaos amongst a group of shell-shocked soldiers during a 1922 visit to England. But others say that the phrase, borrowed to comic effect by Frank Spencer, hides a genuine pioneer in cognitive therapy.
Using contemporary eye-witness reports and newspaper coverage of his travels, Gillian reveals a character who might well merit a more measured response from those writing the popular, as well as the academic, history of 20th-century medicine.
Meanwhile in France a recent conference in his old base in Nancy is part of a new interest in the Coué method, ensuring that 'Every Day, in Every way' his reputation is, at the very least, changing.

A control freak, Clare likes nothing better than interfering in other people's lives on both a professional and personal basis. Clare is in her 30s, white, middle class and heterosexual, all of which are occasional causes of discomfort to her.

MON 10:30 Sidekick (b00sfy5g)
The sidekick is not, by definition, the focus of our attention.
They’re destined to be overshadowed by their better half, the hero who will save Gotham, solve the uncrackable case or rescue the girl from the bad guys...
But without the sidekick these heroes would often remain too distant, too powerful or just too brilliant for us to ever really love them.
So in steps the earthy, flawed and loyal sidekick to provide the audience with someone to connect to, a character who knows how the world really works to help the hero off tilting at windmills.
Whether it's in countless children's films - think Eddie Murphy's Donkey to Mike Myers's Shrek - or a hundred comic books and cartoons - or high literature from Cervantes to Sterne and Shakespeare to Verne - the sidekick provides the laughs, the pratfall and the focus of our empathy.
Frank Cottrell Boyce talks with those who've created sidekicks, those who've played the parts and those who've studied just how essential these characters really are to making the fiction seem believable and offer a human face to the often inhuman character supposedly at the centre of the show.

Frank Skinner and guests Jo Caulfield, Lily Phillips, Simon Evans and John Tothill review a wide range of meatballs, perfumes, Presidential spouses and people called Heathcliff.
Everyone has an online life, and when the great British public put pen to keyboard to leave a review, they almost always write something hilarious. And our all-star panel have to work out just what they were reviewing – and maybe contribute a few reviews of their own. TUE 10:30 BACH: Man of Passion (b08lgpr7)
Johann Sebastian Bach has long been called “the fifth evangelist”.
His music displays a sense of fervent devotion to the biblical texts he set.
His ambition to compose vast cycles of sacred music for every feast in the church year, has left us with over 200 cantatas as well as magnificent choral works including the St. John and St. Matthew Passion, Christmas Oratorio and B Minor Mass.
He is heralded as one of the greatest composers of all time, his music finding a place within the hearts and souls of all those who experience it.
But who was the man behind the music? What did he think, feel and believe? What inspired him and what drove him to write such ground-breaking compositions?
Professor John Butt, Bach scholar and director of the Dunedin Consort explores Bach's life and work. He considers the composer's motivation and his character speaking to composers and musicians in order to delve into Bach’s personality and purpose.
Gathering together the evidence available to us today, he attempts to reconstruct something of this musical great in all his complexity; this man who revolutionised the music of his time but, all the while, looked beyond, dedicating each composition “to the glory of God alone”

Comedian. Writer. Ex-Zoo Keeper. Bird Watcher. Definitely NOT a people person.
Sam and Henry are making a series about birds, and armed with Sam's 'Big Book of Birds' they're looking out for a different species in each episode.
Sadly, and despite Henry's very best efforts, Sam keeps being distracted by the people they run into. Each encounter sparks an investigation into Sam's past, because once they've sorted out his issues, then they'll really be able to focus on the bird-watching.
They're kicking off in Toronto, on the hunt for a fiddle warbler.
The unique talents of the multi-award winning Sam Simmons have landed.
“If you can imagine someone combining the rage of Basil Fawlty with the lunacy of Spike Milligan you are getting somewhere close to Simmons. Painfully frank, riotously inventive and a deserving award winner.” The Evening Standard (UK)

The Hay Wain
We have been making art for tens of thousands of years. But very few of these many millions of images have become truly famous.
Only a handful of artworks have entered popular culture, as fridge magnets, greetings cards and biscuit tins – becoming instantly recognisable all over the world.
Art historian Dr James Fox tells the story of one such painting, John Constable's The Hay Wain.
For more than a century, The Hay Wain has been all around us. It's been reproduced in magazines and on merchandise, in cartoons and advertisements and featured on propaganda posters and at protests. But why did it hit the big time?
Christine Riding of The National Gallery and the photomontage artist and activist Peter Kennard contribute as James traces The Hay Wain's progress through the artistic stratosphere to global celebrity.

Dead Jews
American comedian Alex Edelman returns to take a comic look at what it’s like being a millennial today.
The so-called Millennial generation - those born between 1982 and 1994 - has been much maligned in the press for being lazy, entitled, vain, venal, self-involved, easily offended little emperors.
In the first episode series four Alex Edelman explores why Jews are still so problematic for so many.
With the rise of QAnon and elected members of congress like Marjorie Taylor Greene, antisemitism has somehow crept into the mainstream, especially in America, and a lot of it still seems to go unchecked. As an observant Jew himself, he looks at all the ways his faith, and people's reaction to it, impacts his life and the ways in which society still fails to understand the issues many Jews like him have to live with.

Nessun Dorma
Singer Jon Christos watched the Italia 90 World Cup with his Dad.
He says Pavarotti's live performance of 'Nessun Dorma' at the tournament was the only time he ever saw his Dad cry.
Pavarotti's daughter Cristina talks about the impact this aria had on her father's life and how his 1990 performance inspired many people to become interested in opera.
Beatrice Venezia conducted 'Nessun Dorma' at the 'Puccini day' she created in Lucca in 2018. She also conducted Andrea Bocelli's performance of the aria at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022.
Sir Bobby Robson's son Mark was at Italia 90 and talks about the pride he felt seeing his Dad lining up with the England team for the semi-final against West Germany. It was also sung at Sir Bobby's memorial service in Durham Cathedral.
Broadcaster and author Alexandra Wilson explains that the opera Turandot is the story of Prince Calaf, who falls in love with the titular Princess. In 'Nessun Dorma' Calaf expresses his determination to win her hand, ending with that extraordinary refrain 'Vincerò!' or 'I will win'.
Paul Potts won 'Britain's Got Talent' in 2007 performing 'Nessun Dorma' and recalls singing it to over a million people at the Brandenburg Gate on New Year's Eve in 2010.
When Italy locked down in March 2020, hairdresser Piero d'Angelico played 'Nessun Dorma' from a five-story window above Cambridge railway station to show solidarity with his home country and the Italian community in his adopted city.
