SAT 00:30 The Lost Cockney Voice (b08n4hmh)
What does the way we speak say about us?
Why do we still judge each other that way? And why do so many of us still feel the need to “improve” our accent to fit in?
Cole Moreton did that as a teenager, trying to escape London's East End, but now he goes back to understand where he came from - and to search for the unique but vanishing voice of his late grandmother’s generation.
They grew up during and after wartime listening to posh announcers on the wireless and sounded half Cockney, half like the Queen. Can there be any women like that left in the same place today, transformed as it is by immigration and gentrification?
The East Enders have left for Essex and Kent and experts say true Cockney will die out within a couple of decades. Meanwhile a new accent is emerging on the old streets - Multicultural London English. Cole meets modern grandmothers of all backgrounds in the East End today, as he searches in vain for the voice of his Nan.
The real Queen sounds more like a Cockney than she used to - but she’s not available for interview.
Dame Vera Lynn sings him a bedtime lullaby. June Brown, who plays Dot Cotton, says they don’t talk proper Cockney on BBC TV's EastEnders any more - it’s all “lazy talk” now.
But finally, Cole finds Beryl, a formidable force in Forest Gate at the age of 91, who sounds exactly like his Nan.

Naturalist Castaways
Carl Jones
Biologist Professor Carl Jones is castaway by Lauren Laverne.
Carl is a conservation biologist who is best known for saving the Mauritius kestrel from extinction.
He is the scientific director of Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, chief scientist at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and an honorary professor in ecology and conservation biology at the University of East Anglia.
He was born in Carmarthen in Wales and was fascinated with animals from an early age, rearing rescued common kestrels, owls and hawks in his back garden. He studied biology at North-East London Polytechnic and, after learning about the plight of the Mauritius kestrel, he was determined to go out to the country to try to save the bird.
He arrived in Mauritius in 1979 when there were only two known breeding pairs left in the wild.
By the time he left in 1999 he’d established a captive breeding programme and today hundreds of Mauritius kestrels fly over the islands where he spent decades pioneering his, sometimes controversial, methods. Today the Mauritius kestrel is the national bird.
He is also responsible for saving from extinction three species of reptiles, a fruit bat and several plants.
He was appointed an MBE for his work in 2004 and in 2016 he won the prestigious Indianapolis Prize – the world’s leading award for animal conservation.
Carl lives in Carmarthen with his wife and two children and assorted animals including two Andean condors called Carlos and Baby.

The Ballad of Eliza Showell
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects The Ballad of Eliza Showell - the story of an orphan.
When poet Liz Berry stumbles onto a hidden part of her own family's story, it leads her into an investigation of a lost chapter of British history; a story that takes us from the slums of Edwardian Birmingham to the snowbound hills of Nova Scotia.
Between 1860 and 1960, over 130,000 of Britain's poorest and most vulnerable children were forcibly emigrated to distant parts of the British colonies to work as indentured farm labourers and domestic servants. They were known as Home Children. It is estimated that one in ten Canadians is descended from a 'Home Child'.
In 2010, Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an official apology on behalf of the UK Government to the child migrants - "We are sorry that instead of caring for them, this country turned its back, and we are sorry that the voices of those children were not heard."
Presented by Liz Berry

Professor Vincent Walsh of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience has a theory he wants to pursue. He’s an expert in the workings of the visual brain.
He thinks that two specific areas may be talking to each other in an unexpected way, resulting in recognisable faces being mixed up with recognisable objects, hence Mrs Thatcher as an axe, a handbag, and even a shark.
Now, cartoonist and neuroscientist are going to meet.
"I for one would be fascinated to know what's going on in my brain - please pursue this!" says Gerald Scarfe.

Everyone has an online life, and when the great British public put pen to keyboard to leave a review, they almost always write something hilarious. And our all-star panel have to work out just what they were reviewing – and maybe contribute a few reviews of their own. TUE 10:30 Where Are All the Working Class Writers? (b09fzmjt)
"The more we reinforce the stereotypes of who writes and who reads, the more the notion of exclusivity is reinforced. It takes balls to gatecrash a party."
Kit de Waal published her first novel, My Name is Leon, in 2016 at the age of 55.
She’s already put her money where her mouth is - using part of the advance she received from Penguin to set up a creative writing scholarship in an attempt to improve working class representation in the arts.
Kit knows that - as a writer from a working class background - the success of her debut novel is a rare occurrence.
Born to a Caribbean bus driver father and an Irish mother (a cleaner, foster carer and auxiliary nurse), Kit grew up in Birmingham and left school at 15 with no qualifications. She became a secretary with the Crown Prosecution Service and went on to have a career in social services and criminal law.
Kit explores an issue that is deeply personal to her. She looks back at her own life and trajectory, and takes us on a journey around the country to find out what the barriers really are to working class representation in British literature today.
"There is a difference between working class stories and working class writers. Real equality is when working class writers can write about anything they like - an alien invasion, a 19th century courtesan, a medieval war. All we need is the space, the time to do it - oh yes, and some way to pay the bills!"

The writer Nicholas Royle is a passionate supporter of libraries and a devoted bibliophile.
As a young man his passion for books was so strong, in fact, that some of the books he borrowed from libraries didn't manage to find their way back to their homes on the library shelves.
Now, over three decades on, Nicholas is finally doing the right thing and returning the books to the places he first encountered them - Manchester, Paris and London - hoping to avoid any hefty fines in his attempt to straighten his accounts.
Along the way he considers his evolving relationship with both books and libraries, meeting other writers such as Vahni Capildeo and Polar Bear to hear about books they have neglected to return because they loved them so much; he also speaks with others who would never dream of failing to take their books back, such as AL Kennedy.
Nicholas also meets a successful journalist who went to the same school as him and was one of the last to borrow the novel before Nicholas himself took it on extended leave.

So he goes to seek salvation at church, leaving Babs and Churley to sober up the Reverend Mr Clement. However, the vicar fears the previous evening’s activities may have left him with something more worrisome than a hangover.
Lord Christian Brighty used to be the most notorious rake of the Regency. But after a hazing ritual for a new chambermaid led to a self-inflicted cannonball injury, Brighty, compelled by the chambermaid in question - the uneducated but forthright Babigail – resolves to mend his ways. Accompanying him in his quest are Babs (elevated beyond her station to a chambermaid-cum-adviser role), and his butler, Mr Churlington (although Churley would actually prefer everything to stay exactly as it used to be).

Spiegel im Spiegel
Exploring the impact that Estonian composer Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel has had on people's lives.
Written in 1978, just prior to his departure from Estonia, Arvo’s piece for piano and violin is musically minimal, yet produces a serene tranquillity.
It's in F major in 6/4 time, with the piano playing rising crotchet triads and the violin playing slow scales, alternately rising and falling, of increasing length, which all end on the note A.
The score of the piece looks deceptively simple, but as violinist, Tasmin Little explains, it's one of the most difficult pieces to perform because the playing has to simply be perfect, or the mood is lost.
"Spiegel im Spiegel" in German literally can mean both "mirror in the mirror" as well as "mirrors in the mirror", referring to the infinity of images produced by parallel plane mirrors.
The music inspired visual artist Mary Husted to produce a set of collages called "Spiegel im Spiegel" which in a roundabout way, led to her being traced by her long lost son.

FRI 10:30 Every Day in Every Way (b01mqq6f)
Positive thinking gurus and hypnotherapists aren't the only ones familiar with the phrase:
'Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better.'
It's reputation today is that of a trite, rather ineffective 'feel good' relic of yesteryear but the phrase, and the man who conjured it up have a fascinating history.
Writer Gillian Darley explores the work of the Frenchman Emile Coué who, though a mere pharmacist in his native France, came to be one of the best known figures of the post First World War world. His visits to England and America were proceeded by record sales of his books which encouraged advocates in the ways of auto-suggestion.
The scientific community are dismissive of his place in the development of psychiatric thinking and development and Gillian reveals reports of one event in which he caused chaos amongst a group of shell-shocked soldiers during a 1922 visit to England. But others say that the phrase, borrowed to comic effect by Frank Spencer, hides a genuine pioneer in cognitive therapy.
Using contemporary eye-witness reports and newspaper coverage of his travels, Gillian reveals a character who might well merit a more measured response from those writing the popular, as well as the academic, history of 20th-century medicine.
Meanwhile in France a recent conference in his old base in Nancy is part of a new interest in the Coué method, ensuring that 'Every Day, in Every way' he's reputation is, at the very least, changing.
