David Attenborough - World Music Collector
Sir David Attenorough reveals a side of himself that nobody knows.
He’s a collector of music from all over the world.
Hear the stories that surround it, and the music itself.
One of David’s first projects was 'Alan Lomax - Song Hunter', a TV series he produced in 1953-4. The famous collector of the blues and folk music of America gathered traditional musicians from all over Britain and Ireland and, for the first time, they appeared on TV. David loved the music, the people and, inspired by Lomax, he became music collector himself.
From the start, there was a connection between wildlife and folk culture broadcasting: BBC natural history staff shared an office, and equipment, with colleagues busy recording traditional songs, tunes and stories. Soon after 'Song Hunter' Attenborough began travelling the world for the series 'Zoo Quest'.
This time the hunt was for animals, captured live for London Zoo. The series also looked at the culture of local people and if he came across music Attenborough recorded it. In Paraguay he met some amazing harp players and recorded what became the series' signature tune. This started a craze. Remember Los Trios Paraguayos?
Wherever he went to make programmes David Attenborough recorded musicians. When the lads carrying the crew's baggage in New Guinea started singing, he taped them. He recorded songs in Borneo longhouses, drumming in Sierra Leone, gamelan music in Java, Aboriginal didgeridoo players and palace music in Tonga.
Attenborough gave the music to the BBC and it has sat, unheard, in the Sound Library ever since. Now he listens again to recordings he made half a century ago. He reveals the memories and stories they evoke, and his delight in the music.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2016.
SAT 00:45 The New Elizabethans (b01ljwmd)
David Attenborough
The New Elizabethans: Sir David Attenborough is Britain's well-known broadcaster and naturalist whose landmark Life series changed the way we watched TV and attracted record audiences. He received more public votes to be a New Elizabethan than anyone else in the 2012 Radio 4 series “The New Elizabethans” celebrating public figures to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Starting as a trainee producer at the BBC in 1952 making shows like 'Animal, Vegetable, Mineral' and 'Zoo Quest' he became Controller of BBC 2 in 1965. There he shook up the schedule, commissioning programmes such as 'Man Alive', 'Monty Python's Flying Circus' and 'Civilization'.
But despite being promoted to Director of Programmes for BBC 1 and 2 in 1969, Attenborough's heart lay in programme-making and he resigned from the BBC to present and write Life on Earth. This was the first in the Life series with unforgettable scenes such as Attenborough encountering Dian Fossey's mountain gorillas in Rwanda.
Since then, Attenborough's films have pushed the boundaries of wildlife film-making and his hushed tones enthusing about the natural world have earned him the title "greatest living national treasure".
The New Elizabethans have been chosen by a panel of leading historians, chaired by Lord (Tony) Hall, Chief Executive of London's Royal Opera House. The panellists were Dominic Sandbrook, Bamber Gascoigne, Sally Alexander, Jonathan Agar, Maria Misra and Sir Max Hastings.
They were asked to choose: "Men and women whose actions during the reign of Elizabeth II have had a significant impact on lives in these islands and/or given the age its character, for better or worse."
Presenter: James Naughtie
Producer: Clare Walker
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in August 2012.

With:
Bill Oddie
Alex Horne

Mark Cocker
Sir David will play bird calls for the teams to identify, some of which will be Percy's impressions, so can they tell the difference? They will also be asked to identity circumstances - a cry of distress, alarm or a sexy song?
Woven into the rounds will be snippets about Percy’s life and impact.
Percy discovered his talent for talking like animals aged seven. Eventually he could produce the sound of over 600 birds, and some other beasts (his was the voice of the killer whale in Orca, the alien in Alien and he provided sheep noises for Kate Bush's song The Dreaming).
Percy Edwards died in 1996 aged 88.

Round 1: Literature
The problem with quizzes is that the same questions keep coming up!
Like “What’s the name of the only member of ZZ Top without a beard?”
So the more quizzes you do, the more predictable they get.
Luckily, here comes quizzer, comedian and Rose d’Or winner Paul Sinha with a solution!
In each episode, Paul invites the audience to tell him their favourite quiz questions, before offering up not just different and surprising questions, but also the fascinating stories behind the answers.
The first show is full of questions for the Literature Round of the quiz. Paul asks about the first work of sci-fi to depict a flight to the moon, an author's curiously-labelled filing cabinet and the best-selling British writer still alive at the time of recording.
The audience, meanwhile, contribute questions about unusual verbs, literary hotels, and the works of Eric Morecambe.
It’s facts, jokes, stories and puns – just the way you like them.

Naturalist Castaways
Helen Macdonald
Writer and naturalist Helen Macdonald is castaway by Lauren Laverne.
Helen is best known as the author of H is for Hawk which won the 2014 Samuel Johnson Prize and the Costa Book Award, and topped the sales charts. The book chronicles her experiences training a goshawk called Mabel while grieving for her late father.
Helen’s father was a staff photographer at the Daily Mirror and her mother was a journalist on local newspapers. In 1975, when Helen was five, her parents bought a house in Terkel’s Park, an estate owned by the Theosophical Society.
It was here that Helen became a keen bird watcher and developed a love of the natural world, spending her days in fields and meadows where she collected specimens which she brought home to study.
At the age of 12, she helped out at a local falconry centre and trained her first hawk, a kestrel called Amy. After graduating from Cambridge, she worked for the National Avian Research Centre in Wales before returning to academia.
Her father’s death in 2007 prompted Helen to buy Mabel and bring her home to live with her. Training Mabel was Helen’s way of dealing with her grief during what she describes as a very dark period of her life. The relationship between her and Mabel became so intense that she says she became more hawk than human.
Helen continues to write books and essays and present programmes about the natural world. She lives in Suffolk with two parrots she calls the Bugs.

Nina Gilligan’s head has become a goldfish bowl... distorted reflections, empty speech bubbles, thoughts tapping against the glass. She drifts through the murk, waiting for the filter to kick back in.
She starts with a plan. Or tries to. But it won’t stay put. Words go missing, stories double back, and a voice in her head keeps butting in at the worst possible moment.

Recorded live at the Frog and Bucket Comedy Club in Manchester, Nina is thinking and talking at the same time, not always in the same direction.
As everything loops, slips, and resurfaces, Nina tries to hold onto what matters, and finds herself seeing some memories in a completely different light.

4. Going Home
Bill Bailey stars as Guy Starling, a middle aged man who, after 45 years, and for reasons quite unknown to him, is suddenly revisited by his imaginary childhood friend, Hennikay.
Things have come to a head for Guy. He has lost his job, he’s running out of money and, most worrying of all, his 11-year-old imaginary friend, Hennikay, is still a very permanent – and annoying – fixture in his life. No matter how hard he tries to persuade him that he doesn’t exist, he just can’t get him to leave.
And so in a last-ditch attempt to understand why his old friend has returned from his childhood and just what he wants, Guy decides to go back home to where it all started and see his Mum – who unfortunately for him, is not imaginary.
Over the years Guy has found that trips back to his boyhood home never go smoothly, but this one becomes spectacularly rocky. As mother and son share some uncomfortable home truths, family skeletons are dragged out of cupboards and Guy gets stuck in a bush.
As always, Hennikay is there to save the day and this time in the most unexpected way. Because, as he tells Guy, just because he’s imaginary, doesn’t mean he’s not real.

S2 E3: Baby Daddy
Geoff Norcott examines modern masculinity in this second series of his stand-up show, by creating the safe space of a working men’s club so he can speak freely about the problems men are facing and how we might go about fixing them in a way that benefits everyone.
This week, Geoff looks at the early years of fatherhood – before you can kick a ball around with them, or give them inspiring words of wisdom as a stirring score plays behind you. What does it mean to be a “good dad” to a baby? As ever, these serious points are intercut with “manly hypotheticals”, the sort of question men ask each other to avoid talking about stuff that matters, like: who would win in a fight between Ben Shephard and Dermot O’Leary?

Ready Player Marx by by Sean Grundy and Cara Jennings
Nell Barlow and Hollie Edwin star in a satirical and emotional drama about the battles, firings and dirty tactics a group of video game workers face trying to unionise in the £50 billion gaming industry. Inspired by real events.
“Go, SuperMario, Go… Solidarity is built from struggle.”
Video game workers Laura in the UK and Rachel in the US are close to breakdowns with their 100-hour weeks, making violent game content, dealing with industry racism and sexism. They want to start a union to protect themselves and start secret meetings inside virtual gaming worlds where they attract a group of like-minded protestors. But all is not what it seems when the mysterious Marx-XXX appears on the scene. And in the real world they see just how nasty the industry can get when bosses want to bring them down.
“Remember Lara Croft… Revolution is the locomotive of history.”
It’s a story of love, betrayal, socialism and dark secrets when two young people fight for their rights and take on capitalism as they journey through online gameworlds - a bank heist in AutoPimp, undersea adventures in Noctopus, laser battles in Astrattack, beach fun in VolleyUppy, shoot and score in Glasshouse, and fighting demon dragons in Spangenhelm. Babs persuades absentee landlord Brighty that he has to visit his estate village for the first time ever to make it up to the estate villagers, but their visit swiftly descends into a mystery. With Brighty away, Churlington defies specific instructions NOT to clean the East Wing.
Lord Christian Brighty is the talk of the Regency 'Ton' - a celebrated libertine, a heartthrob and a hero to many. But close-up, he is a spoilt, impetuous, life-ruining bastard… Or at least he was. Because his carefree life of infinite privilege has been upended by an encounter with his new chambermaid - the uneducated but forthright Babigail - who became the first person to tell him the unvarnished truth about his selfish behaviour. Overnight, his lifelong trust that everyone loved him had been replaced with a gnawing fear that Babs was right.
So now, with his narcissism collapsing and a need to prove to Babs he is actually a good person, Lord Brighty is determined to fix all his past wrongs. And by extension all the ills of Regency society. Accompanying him in his quest are Babs (elevated beyond her station to a chambermaid-cum-adviser role), and his butler, Mr Churlington. Although Churley would prefer everything to stay exactly as it used to be (as would all Brighty’s friends, family and the entirety of high society).

This single movement is the composer’s most well-known piece of music. It was famously used in the 1971 Luchino Visconti film Death in Venice. It was also conducted by Leonard Bernstein at the mass at St Patrick's Cathedral, New York on the day of the burial of Robert Kennedy.
Composer David Matthews explains the significance of this piece in Mahler's output.
Psychoanalyst Anthony Cantle describes listening to it with his mother during her last days of dementia.
Malcolm Reid tells how this piece signified a change in himself as a young man in the British police force with narrow, racist views, to hearing it in Australia and shifting to becoming a liberal.
And Helen Epstein explains why it was played at her mother's funeral.
Series exploring famous pieces of music and their emotional appeal.

How Success Ruined Me by Christopher Green
Roy Hudd and Christopher Green discover the perils of applause in a comic conversation at Wilton's Music Hall, where they tell the lost story of music hall idol Fred Barnes.
Fred was a queer icon and music hall star 'in the Greek style', who topped the national circuit in 1911. At the height of his fame, he would be seen about town in his trademark white suit and hat, with a pet marmoset on his shoulder.
But Fred's tragic family history, sudden success and enormous wealth were too hard to handle. His addictions and flamboyant offstage adventures proved his ruin, and after being branded 'a menace to His Majesty's fighting forces', Fred was banned from the stage by his employers. He sold his memoir 'How Success Ruined Me' to the papers, but was last seen in Southend pubs, singing any song for a drink - now with a chicken perched on his shoulder.
Chris and Roy play out (and argue about, and rewrite) the vital moments from Fred's private and public life, while reflecting frankly on the perils of applause, addiction and identity in their own performing lives - with jokes, chat and songs.
