SAT 00:00 Soul Music (b00v1pk9)
Series 10
The Emperor
Beethoven's fifth and final piano concerto, The Emperor is majestic and moving in equal measure.
Richard McMahon plays extracts and discusses the virtuosic it demands.
Australian film producer, Hal McElroy, talks about using the Adagio (the second movement) to illustrate the classic 1970s film Picnic at Hanging Rock.
That was where Andrew Law – who was Chaplain at Malvern College - first heard the piece. He describes the Adagio as being 'one of those pieces of art which it is worth being alive to have heard'.
Concert pianist, James Rhodes, describes how The Emperor was central to his childhood and his developing love of Beethoven's piano music.
Music teacher and singer, Prue Hawthorne, recalls how her father (an amateur clarinettist) laboriously transcribed by hand the horn and clarinet sections of the first movement so they could play along with the record in their living room.
Also contributing is the renowned Beethoven biographer, John Suchet.
Concert pianist Richard McMahon has now retired as a teacher at the Royal Welsh School of Music and Drama.

SAT 07:30 Wise Gals by Nathalia Holt (Omnibus) (m002tpdc)
In the wake of the Second World War, four agents were critical in helping build a new organization we now know as the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
The unsung story of the women who worked for the early American intelligence agency the OSS, where crucial decisions were made to recruit and turn spies.
Adelaide Hawkins, Mary Hutchison, Eloise Page, and Elizabeth Sudmeier, called the “wise gals” by their male colleagues because of their sharp sense of humour and even quicker intelligence, were not the stereotypical femme fatale of spy novels.
They were smart, courageous, and ground-breaking agents at the top of their class, instrumental in both developing innovative tools for intelligence gathering - and insisting (in their own unique ways) that they receive the credit and pay their expertise deserved.
Through their friendship and shared sense of purpose, they rose to positions of power and were able to make real change in a traditionally “male, pale, and Yale” organisation.
Wise Gals sheds a light on the untold history of the women whose daring foreign intrigues, domestic persistence, and fighting spirit have been and continue to be instrumental to US security.

Oscar Winners 3
Jenny Beavan
Costumer designer Jenny Beavan is castaway by Lauren Laverne.
Jenny has won three Oscars for her costumes for the films Room with a View, Mad Max: Fury Road and Cruella, and has received nine further Academy Award nominations.
She was born in London, and her parents were both professional musicians who encouraged her to paint, draw and learn a musical instrument.
After studying theatre design, she was invited at the age of just 21 to create the sets for a production of Carmen at the Royal Opera House, conducted by Sir Georg Solti. She also worked on the costumes, which eventually led to her current career.
Her credits now include more than 60 films and television series, including a long collaboration with the Merchant Ivory team, on titles such as Howards End and Remains of the Day, as well as Room with a View.
Her costumes range from precise period recreations, in films such as The King’s Speech, to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max and the extravagant 1970s-inspired gowns for Emma Stone and Emma Thompson in Cruella.
Along with her Oscars, Jenny has also won four BAFTAs and two Primetime Emmy awards.

Max Cotton, a retired political journalist, leaves behind the weekly shop, supermarkets and the modern world to find out if he can grow and produce 100% of his food on a smallholding near Glastonbury. His only import for a year is salt.
This second episode gets off to a bad start as getting the wheat in is hampered by badgers and a pre-Stone Age harvesting system. Max explores making bread from the wheat he’s grown, discusses having a house cow and making cheese, and deals with the shock of going without tea and coffee.

TUE 10:30 Inside the Elephant Mind (b00qxgzw)
Elephants are clever but science is only now beginning to reveal just how smart they really are. Andrew Luck-Baker joins British and Kenyan researchers on the East African savannah who are revealing the depths of the elephant mind with the help of a huge loudspeaker in the back of a Land Rover.
By playing different sound recordings - of elephants, lions and people - at elephant family groups, scientists are probing the sophistication of their memory and pachyderm numerical skills. They are also testing whether elephants can distinguish between different human languages. Anecdotes suggest they can.
Another team of British researchers have been using urine samples and smelly clothes in experiments to probe the agility of elephant grey matter.
All this has been taking place on the plains of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is home to the world's longest running study of a single elephant population. Started by journalist-turned-biologist Cynthia Moss almost forty years ago, the study is a continuing record of every facet of the lives of every elephant living there. Cynthia Moss says the Amboseli data is ‘gold’ for visiting animal psychologists.
It turns out that that elephants are more intelligent than humans in some respects. For example, elephants have a much better short-term working memory than we do and out-perform people on at least one numerical skill. But why might they need to distinguish between the English language and the language of the local Masaai people? And what does this research tell us about the evolution of animal intelligence in general?
Produced and presented by Andrew Luck-Baker.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2010.

While his parents are downstairs, drinking, smoking and arguing about their failing marriage, Adrian is upstairs in his bedroom listening to Abba, reading great works of literature, writing poems, and penning letters to the BBC.
Despite the many challenges that life throws at him - including regular beatings from the school bully, unrequited love, raging hormones, a severe case of acne and numerous rejection letters - Adrian soldiers on bravely and wins a place in our hearts with his charming naïveté.

Scott Bennett: Stuff
Before becoming an award-winning comedian Scott Bennett was an award-winning product designer, a career he gave up to avoid workplace pressure and constant scrutiny. In his time, Scott has designed everything from water cans and hydraulic lifting systems to storage boxes and, in one instance, a flat-pack bondage cage.
As a former product designer, Scott now feels guilty about the part he’s played in how consumerism impacts the world we live in. He asks whether it’s possible to live a simple life when our lives are filled with so much, and probably too much, stuff.
In this bespoke show recorded at The Stand in Newcastle, Scott takes aim at the mindfulness industry, smart technology, aspirational lifestyles, product packaging and, his new bugbear, paper straws.

4. The Politics of Utopia
We like to think politics is about pragmatism. But what if it's always really been about utopia? Top political comedian Matt Forde convenes his Focus Group in front of a live theatre audience with a sharp and varied panel — journalist and broadcaster Jo Coburn, former Cabinet minister Michael Gove and comedian Ahir Shah - to ask whether the dream of a perfect society is the secret engine of political life.
From new towns built from scratch with names designed to start arguments, to a Home Secretary who wants the eyes of the state on every citizen at all times, and why we're still working five days a week when Keynes promised us we'd be living a life of leisure and writing poetry by now — this is an episode about vision and ambition, and the considerable gap between the two.

In this episode, life on the farm starts getting hard as the reality of seasonal food production in England begins to bite. Early spring is the hardest time to produce fresh vegetables - it’s called the hungry gap. We hear how Max is trying to bridge that gap. The irony is that the news has been full of stories about shortages in supermarkets while Max is living off swedes, milk and rationed potatoes.

Comedian Russell Kane nominates the novelist Evelyn Waugh.
One of the greatest prose stylists of 20th century literature, not to mention one of the funniest, novelist Waugh also has a reputation for being a snob, a bully, and a dyed-in-the-wool reactionary.
How much of this was a self-parodying pose, and how much the underlying truth?
Russell is supported by literary critic Ann Pasternak Slater. Both are unabashed Waugh fans.
Russell calls him "a ninja master of banter", but series presenter Matthew Parris says he can't stand him...

THU 10:30 The Unconscious Life of Bombs (b09hr40v)
Historian and psychoanalyst Daniel Pick of Birkbeck College, University of London tells the story of how aerial bombardment - from Zeppelins to B52s, from H-Bombs to drones - has made the unconscious mind a field of battle.
Daniel explores how, in the shadow of the First World War, Freud turned his analytical eye from desire to the 'death drive', and how psychoanalysts probed what might happen if another war came.
Would survivors of mass aerial bombardment hold up psychically, or would they collapse into infantile panic? Or would they become uncontrollably aggressive?
And why do humans come to be so aggressive in the first place?
When the war - and the bombers - did come to Britain, it appeared that survivors were much more stoical and defiant than had been expected.
But, as Daniel discovers, brave faces concealed a great deal of psychological damage.
With historian Lyndsey Stonebridge, he visits the Wellcome Library to see - courtesy of the Melanie Klein Trust - the case notes of the psychoanalyst Melanie Klein on her analysis of a troubled ten year old boy, 'Richard'.
What do Klein's notes, and Richard's extraordinary drawings, reveal about his attitude to being bombed?
Daniel examines how, with the advent of the Cold War and the distinct possibility that bombs and missiles could destroy civilisation, technocrats trying to plan for the end of the world coped with staring into the abyss.
Finally, Daniel shows how a radical new turn in aerial bombardment opens up this field anew. Nuclear weapons can destroy the planet; but what does it do to the mind to live under the threat of 'surgical' attack by unmanned drones?

Easter from the Isle of Man
From the Isle of Man’s Niarbyl Bay, today's Daily Service invites us to the water’s edge to reflect on encounters with the risen Jesus. With readings from St John’s Gospel, we hear how the disciples met Christ on the shore, and consider what it means to recognise God’s presence in our own lives today. Through music, including the traditional Manx melody “Arrane Ghelbee,” and contributions from local voices, the service explores faith, doubt, and the courage to ask, “Is that you, God?” As the sound of sea and story intertwine, we’re encouraged to listen, to recognise, and to accept the invitation to “come and have breakfast” with Christ in the everyday moments of life.
