SAT 00:30 Passports Please (b08nrzpr)
Migration researcher Katy Long tells the extraordinary story of what Bertolt Brecht called ‘the most distinguished part of man’s anatomy’: the passport.
Katy shows how out of step today’s modern, biometric, highly securitized and nationalized idea of a passport is with the document’s origins, and how it came to be this way.
She reveals a document which was once merely to demonstrate personal identity, how in the 18th century many British citizens travelled on French passports because they were cheaper; while after the French revolution, French citizens were often issued British passports.
Not only were passports personal, and optional, but Katy shows how they were also intended to be temporary, and how Britain was the greatest opponent of the system.
As so often, it was the First World War which changed everything, and Katy travels to Geneva to the archives of the League of Nations which, tasked with abolishing passports, instead laid down the rules for a new international passport system which still largely operates today.

SAT 05:00 Drama on 4 (m000vpxw)
South on the Great North Road by Michael Chaplin
"Many have gone before us now. Many have tried and failed somehow. Many souls on the Queen's highway. Where many a tail-light glowed. With the promise of a better life. Heading South on the Great North Road, South on the Great North Road."
Michael Chaplin’s drama is inspired by the song ‘Going South On The Great North Road’ from Sting's 2016 album 57th and 9th.
Sting says both the road and the journey to London have resonances for him:
'It's about my journey from Newcastle to make my fortune. In my young life I covered enough road miles to recall that relentless gravitational pull, the promise of a different kind of life down that road'.
Down the centuries, countless young people from the North and other points of the compass have made similar journeys.
The central character in this play is one of them, and the drama reveals how that journey threatens to tear Peggy Charlton apart.
In her 30s, Peggy (a long-standing name for the Charlton family girls) has the Great North Road in her blood and bones.
Starring Jessica Johnson and Stephen Tompkinson.
Sting's haunting song, which he has performed acapella for the production, is the counterpoint to this drama.

SAT 07:40 In Alistair Cooke's Footsteps (Omnibus) (m002tcz9)
Alvin Hall sets off on a road trip through the USA revisiting Alistair Cooke's Letter from America.
This was broadcast weekly and ran continuously for 58 years on BBC radio from 1946 to 2004.
Cooke had set himself a challenge that seemed deceptively simple: to explain the United States to Britain and the world.
His Letters achieved that and more. He was an acute observer, a marvellous storyteller, a man who loved America but saw it in intensely clear terms - a country that was both great and sometimes terribly flawed in its greatness.
All the major issues, all the significant stories were grist for his writer's mill.
The Korean War and the Cold War, desegregation, the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King, the fall of Nixon, the rise of Reaganomics, immigration, September 11 and the George W Bush presidency.
But after Alistair Cooke's death in 2004, are the Letters still relevant?
For Alvin Hall, the answer is emphatically yes.
Crisscrossing America he tests the insights and observations of Cooke on subjects as diverse as desegregation and jazz, the American Dream and immigration.
Hall also discovers that Alistair Cooke remains as fresh and insightful as he ever was when he wrote and spoke over all those years about an America he loved and understood so well.
Omnibus of five parts.
Over 900 episodes of Alistair Cooke's Letter from America are available to hear through the BBC Radio 4 website and BBC Sounds.
Alvin Hall is an internationally renowned financial educator, TV and radio broadcaster, bestselling author, and regular contributor to magazines, newspapers, and websites. He is an unabashed admirer of Alistair Cooke and Letter from America.

It's 1981 and Margaret Thatcher is in power; Britain is at war in the Falklands and teenagers are growing up in a world without mobile phones or computer games.
While his parents are downstairs, drinking, smoking and arguing about their failing marriage, Adrian is upstairs in his bedroom listening to ABBA, reading great works of literature, writing poems, and penning letters to the BBC.
Many challenges life throws at him - including regular beatings from the school bully, unrequited love, raging hormones, a severe case of acne and numerous rejection letters.
Yet Adrian soldiers on bravely and wins a place in our hearts with his charming naïveté.

1. The Skin We're In
Simon Watt is on a quest to improve the human body, with a little help from our animal cousins.
In each episode, the evolutionary biologist, comedian, and aspiring Dr Frankenstein turns his imaginary scalpel on a different human organ.
He wonders if we wouldn’t be better off with something slightly different – the eyes of a chameleon for example, or the guts of a vulture?
Our skin is the largest organ in our body, a soft, squashy bed-sheet sprinkled with hair follicles, sweat-glands and freckles. Not to mention all the cool scars. It's sensitive, flexible and waterproof - not bad. But it's also pretty fragile.
Ashley Seifert from the University of Kentucky wonders if we might be better with the skin of the African Spiny Mouse. These incredible critters can lose huge patches of their skin, but then miraculously regenerate it all. Grow it back from scratch, like Wolverine, without a scar in sight. Handy!
But perhaps our skin could be helping us be more sneaky instead?
Roger Hanlon, Marine Biologist from the Woods Hole Lab in Massachusetts has a suggestion: the light-show skin of the Common European Cuttlefish. This crafty cephalopod can transform in the blink of an eye to match pretty much any background you can think of; surely the most impressive feat of camouflage in the animal kingdom.
Meanwhile radio-pharmacist Ekaterina Dadachova in Saskatchewan introduces Simon to a truly extraordinary fungus.
It might not be much to look at, but this microscopic black mould uses the melanin in its skin to derive energy from deadly radiation - you'll find it growing in the destroyed reactors at Chernobyl where it consumes radiation at levels that would kill anything else.
Would we take the trade?

Slumdog Millionaire
Somewhere between Bollywood and Hollywood, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ captured the heart of the world, and 8 Oscars in 2009.
Paul Gambaccini tells the gripping story of the low budget independent production that got lucky.
He talks to some of those central to its creation, from Vikas Swarup, the Indian Diplomat who wrote the original novel, co-director Loveleen Tandem, who helped persuade the studios to let the child actors speak Hindi, and Resul Pookerty, whose magical soundscape of India won him an Oscar and changed his life for ever.
It's a film which took a city, a child of the slums, and a game show – and turned it into a star-crossed romance; a film which snuck past the infamous Foreign Language category and into the mainstream Best Picture category at the 81st Academy Awards - despite being at least 20% Hindi.
Winning 8 Oscars, the film had no star actors, but a cast of millions - the city of Mumbai. The real star name was Danny Boyle, a director who, according to screen writer Simon Beaufoy, discovered in Mumbai a city ‘like the inside of his head’ - vibrant, frenetic, dazzling, and full of extremes.
It nearly went straight to DVD, but rose again to take Oscar after Oscar, from under the noses of studio films.
Paul Smith of Celador Productions, describes how his company, who invented the game show, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”, got lucky a second time - winning a Best Picture Oscar.
Producer: Sara Jane Hall

MON 10:30 The Life Sub-Aquatic (b04fzc7m)
Marine biologist and avid scuba diver, Helen Scales, explores the human obsession with inhabiting the depths and meets aquanauts who want to go down and stay down.
From Jules Verne to Jacques Cousteau, the dream of a life sub-aquatic has endured. But could it ever become a reality?
At the moment, there is one place on Earth where you can live deep underwater for weeks at a time: The Aquarius Reef Base, a research station run by Florida International University which sits on the seabed some 20 metres down.
As Helen discovers herself on a short visit to Aquarius, this is paradise for marine scientists who can wave goodbye to the surface and conduct experiments in situ, 24/7.
It also hosts astronauts who use the unique conditions to train for life on the International Space Station as well as voyages deeper into space.
Helen talks to Commander Chris Hadfield (recently made famous through his rendition of Space Oddity) about his time testing space suits for NASA and meeting sharks face to face on night time sorties.
Aquarius stands alone today but the dream of working – and living – under the sea has a rich history that began years before we ever stepped foot on the surface of the moon.
It was undersea pioneer Jacques Cousteau, co-inventor of the Aqua-Lung, who captured the world's imagination when he created the Conshelf underwater village in the Red Sea.
This was followed by the US Navy's Sea Lab and NASA's own 'Tektite' house (built in 1969 by General Electric and described by inhabitant Sylvia Earle as looking like a giant kitchen appliance).
Interest from philanthropists, corporations and even individuals is keeping alive the dream of life as an aquanaut.
Helen meets Lloyd Godson, a young Australian adventurer who is working on his third project - BioSub 3 - a submerged habitat powered by sustainable energy.
As Helen discovers, there's a long way to go to meet the many challenges this hostile environment throws up - not least how our bodies and our brains cope with the pressure and confined conditions that come with living underwater.

2. Eye to Eye
Simon Watt continues his quest to improve the human body, with a little help from our animal cousins.
In each episode, the evolutionary biologist, comedian, and aspiring Dr Frankenstein turns his imaginary scalpel on a different human organ.
He wonders if we wouldn’t be better off with something slightly different – the skin of a cuttlefish for example, or the guts of a vulture!
Our eyes are our window on the world - sunsets and rainbows would be nothing without them.
But both sunsets AND rainbows would look a lot more impressive through the eyes of the Peacock Mantis Shrimp.
Amanda Franklin from the University of Melbourne explains that this small stomatopod has the most complex eye in the animal kingdom; they don't just see more colours than us, they also see polarised light better than any other animal on earth.
If colour's not your thing, how about seeing a long way?
Graham Martin, Emeritus Professor of Avian Sensory Science at the University of Birmingham introduces us to the king of visual acuity: the Eagle.
To spot your prey over vast distances, AND snatch that prey up with pinpoint accuracy, you need astonishing long-range and short-range vision, and Eagles have both. They have two fovea, one for long distance scanning, one for up close grabbing, and can switch elegantly between the two.
"Keep an eye on it", we say. Just one eye. As if that's possible.
Well for the Common Chameleon that's no bother at all. The rapidly swivelling gun-turrets of the chameleon's eyes move independently, processing two separate views of the world at the same time.
Useful for keeping track of bugs you might like to eat. Or your wayward children. Hadas Keter-Katz from the University of Haifa breaks it down.

Episode 3
Sue Townsend's hilarious and heart breaking chronicle of a teenager growing up in the Midlands in the 1980s. A brand new serialisation, read by Harry McEntire, in the year that Adrian Mole himself turns 50.
It's 1981 and Margaret Thatcher is in power, Britain is at war in the Falklands and teenagers are growing up in a world without mobile phones or computer games. While his parents are downstairs, drinking, smoking and arguing about their failing marriage, Adrian is upstairs in his bedroom listening to Abba, reading great works of literature, writing poems, and penning letters to the BBC.
Despite the many challenges that life throws at him - including regular beatings from the school bully, unrequited love, raging hormones, a severe case of acne and numerous rejection letters - Adrian soldiers on bravely and wins a place in our hearts with his charming naïveté.

3. A Change of Heart
Evolutionary biologist, comedian, and aspiring Dr Frankenstein Simon Watt is on a quest to improve the human body, with a little help from our animal cousins.
In each episode he turns his imaginary scalpel on a different human organ and wonders if we wouldn’t be better off with something slightly different – the eyes of a chameleon for example, or the guts of a vulture!
Our heart is our life force, beating out the rhythm to our days 40-100 times every minute, for as long as we live. But it's also fragile; cardiovascular disease has been the no. 1 killer of humans since the middle of the 20th century. And it's all the fault of FAT. Thea Bechshoft from Polar Bears International introduces us to the fluffy white giants of the arctic, who eat nothing but fat, all summer long, and suffer none of our heart-ache from doing so. The secret is all in their genes.
If you reach old age without your coronary arteries clogging up with fat, you might suffer instead from cardiac fibrosis, a kind of hardening of the muscle of the heart. Holly Shiels from the University of Manchester takes us a mile and a half beneath the surface of the North Sea, to meet an ancient titan who simply doesn't get age-related fibrosis. It's the Greenland Shark. They live to extraordinary ages too - up to 500 years old.
For our final stop on the cardiac carousel, Colleen Farmer from the University of Utah takes us deep inside the four-chambered heart of the Crocodile. It's very similar to our own, except for one small and fascinating valve. It allows the humble croc to control where its blood goes, bi-passing the lungs if necessary. Simon wonders what uses we might fund for a crocodilian 'cardiac shunt' of our own.

Remembering Sue Townsend, Aged 68 3/4
"Went out to feed the pig, and saw Townsend being driven along the lane, in her vulgar purple Rolls Royce. She waved, I didn't wave back." @AdrianMole, Jan 19, 2012
In 1970, Sue Townsend was a single mother of three with three jobs. While her children were asleep she secretly wrote semi-autobiographical prose and poetry, which she showed no-one.
In 1980, a young actor asked Sue Townsend if she had anything he could use in an audition for 'Huckleberry Finn' – she gave him some handwritten entries of a diary of Nigel Mole
By 1990 Sue Townsend had become the bestselling author of the 1980's in terms of individual books – out-stripping Jeffrey Archer, Jackie Collins and Barbara Taylor Bradford
Sue Townsend died in 2014. Her legacy of one of the country's greatest comic writers is explored through her own interviews and through her many works (from her 1979 play 'Womberang' to her 2012 bestselling novel 'The Woman Who Went To Bed For A Year'). Excerpts include unpublished and previously unperformed TV soap, 'The Spinney'
Also on hand are: her first and last publishers, Geoffrey Strachan and Louise Moore; theatre director and co-writer Carole Hayman; friend and agent Jane Villiers; and the man who since 1978 stood by her but consistently shunned her limelight, her husband – the normally silent Colin Broadway
Presented by Pearce Quigley, the most recent Adrian Mole on the BBC – the "representative voice from Middle England" who in 2007 was commissioned to present a feature on Tony Blair's ten years as prime minister.

The Politics of The Tribe
We like to think we vote with our heads. But what if we've always voted with our tribe? From parties haemorrhaging members to rivals, to the flag-wrapped contradictions of nationalist politics, to the question of whether multicultural Britain is importing conflicts it never signed up for, this is an episode about belonging, identity - and the ridiculous places both can lead

4. Gut Feeling
Evolutionary biologist, comedian, and aspiring Dr Frankenstein Simon Watt is on a quest to improve the human body, with a little help from our animal cousins.
In each episode he turns his imaginary scalpel on a different human organ and wonders if we wouldn’t be better off with something slightly different – the eyes of a chameleon for example, or the heart of a Greenland Shark!
Our bodies are essentially a long squishy tube, with a mouth at one end, and an anus at the other. Everything else is mere detail. What we put in that tube can make the difference between a life of good health, and a night locked in the bathroom. Dr Mads Bertelsen from Copenhagen Zoo introduces us to a creature that can digest things that would kill us; the vulture. Eating rotting meat's nothing, when you have stomach acid the strength of a car battery.
If meat's not your thing, you might want to switch out your digestive tract with that of a herbivore. A ruminant. Or to be more precise, a cow. Dr Cate Williams from Aberystwyth University imagines what we could do if we had a 'rumen', the unique organ that gives these massive, docile 'foregut fermenters' the ability to break down the toughest plant matter with no problem. For them, it's all about the microbes. Millions of them.
And if all this digestion sounds a bit too much like hard work, why not take a leaf out of the book of a Saccoglossa, a leaf-life, photosynthetic sea-slug who's mastered the art of photosynthesis. Christopher Howe from the University of Cambridge explains how they do it, via a gut system which has evolved the ability to steal chloroplasts, the photosynthetic cells from algae, and make them their own.

We Happened to Be Passing by David Nobbs
A quiet Saturday morning and Tony and Sal Hinchcliffe are tired after a week of work, now have time on their hands. Middle aged and middle class - they haven't had kids and still feel that emotional vacuum.
The doorbell rings. It is an American couple - Monty and Janey - a rather loud duo they stayed with in Delaware years ago. They said "If ever you happened to be passing...".
Jan and Hilda then appear - the Flemish Belgian couple from Bruges. They fed them some waterzooi (flemish stew). In gratitude, Sal and Tony said - "If ever you happened to be passing."
Finally, Pierre and Colette turn up, French Belgians who helped them in Namur when Sal was sick over a Saab because she had eaten some cloying Flemish stew. In gratitude they said - "If ever you happened to be passing."
So - polite Tony and Sal now have a full house. The Americans are loud and pompous and the Belgians loathe each other. But when Colette and Jan find themselves drawn to one another, the ensuing, messy crisis precipitates a reassessment of all the couples' pattern of a behaviour.
A wonderfully perceptive comedy of manners and international relations by David Nobbs - writer of 'The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin' and 'A Bit of a Do'

5. A Lungful
For our final episode, we're wondering how to improve those squishy, spongey sacks of air that keep us pumped up with oxygen - our lungs. First up is Colleen Farmer from the University of Utah, expert in all things crocodilian. Both crocs, and their sister-group, birds, have a unique unidirectional flow system in their lungs, powered by air sacs that keep the air moving. It allows them to breathe - HARD - without damaging the fragile capillaries which keep our blood topped up with O2.
Breathing is one thing, but HOLDING your breath is another. Introducing the Cuvier's Beaked Whale, the champion cetacean breath-holder, with a record dive time of over three and a half hours. With specially designed cartilage that allows their lungs to squash completely flat, and myoglobin-packed muscles which can store an incredible amount of oxygen, everything is designed to keep them under for longer.
But perhaps lungs are over-rated after all. Surely there are other options out there? Why not ask a Painted Turtle - hibernating for months on end at the bottom of a frozen Canadian lake - their lungs are all but useless for half the year. Instead, they've developed an amazing breathing strategy. Forget talking out of your butt; these turtles breathe out of theirs! Suzie Simpson from the British Herpetological Society takes us through it.

That was where Andrew Law – who was Chaplain at Malvern College - first heard the piece. He describes the Adagio as being 'one of those pieces of art which it is worth being alive to have heard'.
Concert pianist, James Rhodes, describes how The Emperor was central to his childhood and his developing love of Beethoven's piano music.
Music teacher and singer, Prue Hawthorne, recalls how her father (an amateur clarinettist) laboriously transcribed by hand the horn and clarinet sections of the first movement so they could play along with the record in their living room.
Also contributing is the renowned Beethoven biographer, John Suchet.
Concert pianist Richard McMahon has now retired as a teacher at the Royal Welsh School of Music and Drama.
