SAT 00:00 Soul Music (m001msqn)
I Only Have Eyes For You
When I Only Have Eyes For You first emerged in 1934 it was a jaunty cinema ditty written by Harry Dubin and Al Warren for the film "Dames".
But it gained huge popularity when the 1950s doo wop group The Flamingos - under Terry Johnson’s musical arrangement - transformed it into a dreamy otherworldly love song.
Terry explains how he turned the song into an evergreen hit that’s been covered by many including Art Garfunkel and Carly Simon.
Musicologist Luis Cruz attributes the genius of the song to its pedal chord - the repeated use of the C note. This adds to the feeling of fixation where the singer can’t see anyone else but the object of his affection.
The song is obviously one that speaks of deep love and Vivian Fransen was one of many who chose the song to play at her wedding. She'd been introduced to the Art Garfunkel version in 1975 when she met the man who was to become her husband.
12 years later he revealed a secret he'd been keeping from her which ended their marriage and caused her to reassess the song's meaning.
Jess Farr Cox would sing the song to her aged rescue dog Pico as his health deteriorated. Only that song - and the theme to Antiques Roadshow - would send him to sleep when he was in pain and distress.
She still gets emotional when she hears it over a year after he was eventually put to sleep. People underestimate the love you get from a rescue dog, she says.
Chris Deerin is a political journalist and part of Scottish band Fat Cops. He recorded a version of I Only Have Eyes For You for the Tiny Changes Young People's Mental Health Charity. This was founded after singer Scott Hutchison died in 2018.
Chris says he and fellow musician Bobby Bluebell had always loved the song and felt it was a fitting tribute to fellow musician Scott.

SAT 00:30 Chant (b04lpzz2)
Richard Coles delves into the 1990s when a recording of Benedictine monks singing became so popular it sold in the millions around the world.
If an album of classical music sold anywhere near one million copies at that time, it was considered unusual. For one to sell more than that was unprecedented.
Adding further to this phenomenon was the fact that this was unfamiliar music at the time, Gregorian Chant, performed not by celebrity artists who might attract a large following, but by monks from a remote corner of Northern Spain. EMI marketed this album Canto Gregoriano, or Chant as it was named in America, as a unique antidote to stress.
Richard Coles and former EMI employees Kick Klimbie and Jane McCann, retrace EMI's marketing tactics in the promotion of Canto Gregoriano.
Professor Adrian North provides insights into the psychology of marketing, exploring what drives people to buy certain things, and how music can impact upon us physically and emotionally.
Richard also takes a trip to the Isle of Wight, where Gregorian Chant is still an important aspect of life at both St Cecilia's Abbey and Quarr Abbey, and questions whether such music is still capable of having any meaning or impact upon our lives in the 21st century.

In the Heat of the Night
Paul Gambaccini on Best Picture Oscar for Norman Jewison's In the Heat of the Night, starring Sidney Poitier.
It makes for uncomfortable viewing. A Southern policeman insolently challenges Sidney Poitier, a detective from 'up North'.
"So, boy, what do they call you in Philadelphia?"
"They call me Mister Tibbs!"
It's one of the great movie lines in history, from Sidney Poitier's favourite of all his films. But was "In The Heat of the Night" a worthy winner of the Best Picture?
Up against tough competition, including "The Graduate" and "Bonnie and Clyde", it's been suggested that this might have been an Oscar vote carried on a tidal wave of outrage during the peak years of the Civil Rights movement.
In 1967, "In the Heat of the Night" seemed to speak out against an America riven with racial tensions. The Watts Riots had just devastated Los Angeles, close to Hollywood. The film was set in Mississippi, but the crew were forced to choose Illinois in the North as a safer location.
The murder of Martin Luther King, and his subsequent funeral, delayed the Oscar ceremony in 1968 by several days - enabling the cast and crew of "In The Heat of the Night" to attend his funeral.
All these stories and more are told to Paul Gambaccini by veteran director - Norman Jewison, and he also hears from his legendary producer - Walter Mirisch - who at the age of 91, still makes his way to his film studios in Hollywood, and takes lunch as Spagos.
Plus the thoughts of one of the world's great cinematographer's Haskell Wexler - who was the first to devise lighting especially for darker skin tones - and sets the scene for Norman Jewison's dramatic reconstruction of a country divided along racial lines that has echoes today.
Producer: Sara Jane Hall

MON 10:30 James and the Giant Eagle (b010fc06)
Like most small boys, James Aldred loved climbing trees.
Now he’s grown up, he's still climbing trees; helping scientists and film crews up into the canopy.
When he was invited to help a wildlife team film one of the world's largest eagles in Southern Brazil, it was an offer he couldn't refuse. But what happened next was a nerve-wracking and painful encounter with one of the world's most powerful birds.
Harpy Eagles have a body length of over 3 feet, a wingspan of over 6 feet and weigh 10-12 pounds.
Their hind talons can grow up to the size of grizzly bear claws, and are used to strike their prey; monkeys, sloths and possums, which they then carry aloft. When James was asked to climb a tree, to assist with moving a camera on an eagle's nest, he found out exactly why these birds have such an awesome reputation.
Harpy Eagles are found in tropical lowland forests from southeast Mexico to northern Argentina and southern Brazil. They are successful predators, owing primarily to their size and strength.
Highly manoeuvrable fliers, they are acutely observant and opportunistic birds. Taken together these attributes make for a highly impressive predator.
Discover the behaviour and ecology of Harpy Eagles and what happens when a female tries to protect her young. Location recordings by James Aldred are combined with insights from ornithologist Ian Newton and field biologist, Marta Curti.

Series 1
Art with Phill Jupitus
Susan Calman is the least relaxed person she knows.
She has no down time, no hobbies (unless you count dressing up your cats in silly outfits) and her idea of relaxation is to play Grand Theft Auto, an hour into which she is in a murderous rage with sky high blood pressure. Her wife had to threaten to divorce her to make her go on holiday last year. Her first for four years. But she's been told by the same long-suffering wife, that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.
So Susan is going to look at her options and try to immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity. Each week she will ditch the old Susan Calman and attempt to find the new Susan Calm, in a typically British leisure pursuit.
This time, she visits the Scottish National Portrait Gallery with Phill Jupitus.
Keep Calman Carry On is an audience stand up show in which Susan reports on how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts.
It's an attempt to find out how people find solace or sanctuary in these worlds and how Susan can negotiate her own place in them.

The Making of Colin Hoult
An audience show in which Colin explores how his bizarre family made him the man he is today. Now, as a 45 year-old dad, he wonders if it’s too late to do anything about it. Based on his hugely successful 2024 Edinburgh show, Colin weaves anecdotes and musings with all too real stories about his early life, featuring a recurring cast of characters: his perennially pessimistic mum, his not-quite-in-reality brothers and his long-suffering Dad who screams ‘why can’t we just be a normal family?’ Colin asks “is it a surprise my neurodiversity was missed?' But growing up in Nottingham we just had a simple phrase that covered everything - ‘he’s not right’. Colin paints a picture of a childhood full of secrets and lies, dominated by Mum’s terror of ending up in the local ‘madhouse’ whilst espousing paranoid conspiracies and pulling out the Ouija board on Christmas Day. Whilst inherently funny, the craziness is recounted with love and sympathy. A brilliant storyteller, Colin intercuts tales of that childhood life with stories about his own contemporary family and how one has been shaped by the other. What does he want to pass on and what does he absolutely not want to? How does he be the best dad he can when his basic understanding of the world is so scrambled? Each episode begins with Colin telling us how he’s, possibly inappropriately, reacted to something mundane that has just happened or been said to him. He’ll unpick the story across the episode tracing his reaction back to his upbringing with other themes, stories and observations along the way. Colin’s stand-up is intercut with childhood and contemporary scenes. Colin plays all his family members, neighbours, distant relatives, postmen, etc.

The Art of Habit
Author and journalist Lynsey Hanley tells the story of sociology In Britain, from its beginnings in the slums of Liverpool and London to its rise in the post-war era as the brave, new ‘science of society’ – exploring the hidden patterns of our everyday lives while offering radical new visions of British society.
For the very first time all aspects of society and culture were considered worthy of study, from the ground up - and not just worthy, but essential for understanding how the built environment, civil institutions, technology, media, identity and ideas in our shared, social space really operate and shape us in turn.
Sociology flourished in the decades following the war, a gateway between the academy and the spaces of everyday life, from the study of football terraces and housing estates to youth tribes and popular culture, new patterns of labour and technology including powerful new media like television. Early studies of class, race and gender in Britain used actual field research, data gathering and new techniques such as ethnography and what was sometimes called 'participant observation'. Nothing was off limits: the discipline was incredibly wide-ranging, generating a popular factual paperback boom with imprints like Pelican publishing many hundreds of crossover titles.
As well as being the first academic subject to take the media seriously, sociology began to change the course of broadcast media itself. The discipline had a huge impact on the TV and radio documentary movement with programmes like the BBC’s ‘Panorama’ and ‘Man Alive’, and ITV's pioneering ‘World in Action’, operating somewhere between current affairs and considered, sociological analysis. Sociologists and documentary makers alike would access all areas, going inside prisons, youth cultures, the police, inner cities and new political groups. The recorded interview and everyday voice was central to both professions, with sociology sometimes referred to as a ‘listener’s art’.
At its core, sociology works on the belief that collective life always comes first and that individual behaviour can’t be understood in isolation. The discipline thrived in the 1960s and ‘70s, but the rise of a more aggressive ideology of individualism (together with the ascendency of Margaret Thatcher's Conservatism in politics in the 1980s) put the 'science of society' on the back foot. Free-market economics challenged sociology as the new intellectual paradigm of the age. The subject was dismissed as either irrelevant or pernicious.
Overwhelming challenges presented by climate change, mass urbanisation, social media and digital technologies have, in recent decades, revitalised sociology. Could it be that this great post-war social science is needed now more than ever as a critical force for truth, arbitration and intellectual vigilance in the digital and online age?
Contributors include sociologist Les Back, journalist and sociologist Gary Younge, writer and sociologist Ann Oakley, sociologist and broadcaster Laurie Taylor, writer and critic DJ Taylor, co-founder and host of the podcast ‘Surviving Society’, sociologist Chantelle Lewis, urban sociologist Paul Jones, senior curator at the BFI National Archive Patrick Russell, sociologist and British reggae pioneer William Lesley ‘Lyrics’ Henry, economist Shaun Hargreaves Heap, author Marcus Gilroy-Ware and John Scott, vice-president of the British Sociological Association.

WED 23:00 John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme (m000w5jh)
Series 9
Episode 3
The ninth series of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme is very different to the previous eight. It's still written by John Finnemore, "one of our best sketch writers", (The Observer), and performed by him with "a great supporting cast of Margaret Cabourn-Smith, Simon Kane, Lawry Lewin and Carrie Quinlan" (The Telegraph), and there are still sketches and songs. But, with no live studio audience this year, John has taken the opportunity to try something completely new
Every episode in this series of Souvenir Programme is made up of scenes from one person's life, played in reverse order. There's no narrative to the episode; it's still a sketch show, not a sitcom... but the sketches in each episode all happened to one person, played by one member of the cast, over the course of their lifetime.
This week, we follow our way back through the life of Jerry, starting earlier this year and going back to a wartime poem in 1943.
John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme started in 2011 and quickly established itself as "One of the most consistently funny sketch shows for quite some time" (The Guardian), and "One of the funniest and most inventive new radio comedy shows of recent years" (The Daily Mail).

Series 1
1. Knowledge
Dr. Anindita Ghosh (University of Manchester) explores the impact of the printing press on India and argues that print, much more than railways as is commonly understood, gave rise to the Indian nation that was born in 1947.
In her first programme, Anindita explores the 'Renaissance' that came about through the medium of print in India. She travels to Kolkata, formerly the capital of the British Raj, to explore the tremendous explosion of printed material in nineteenth century Bengal, following the setting up of the first presses by missionaries in India.
The colonial government needed English speaking Indians to work its administrative apparatus and a proliferation of English printed material followed. But this was not a passive process. Indians in turn participated in the intellectual revolution to form their own thoughts on society. The search for a putative 'Indian' identity that followed, known today as the Bengal Renaissance, was very much shaped through an exchange of ideas via printed texts.
A sea of Indian-run presses, printing in local languages, furthered the cacophonous print revolution and, by the end of the nineteenth century, more titles were produced in India than in France during the Age of Enlightenment.
By carrying the printed word to more popular levels of readership and extending the networks of the reading community, Anindita argues, these were connections that were to prove vital for the formation of the nation in 20th century India.

FRI 09:15 Lady Clementine Is Looking For Love (m002rdb9)
Is Charlie Rowe 'The One'?
Join Regency renegade Lady Clementine on her increasingly desperate quest to find love as she enters the world of modern dating. She’s tried everything to bag a man before her 27th birthday - wandering the armoury looking confused, bloodletting (just to feel something), and propositioning all her cousins (just the beefcakes, mind you). But disturbingly, nothing has worked – yet.
Part poet, part arsonist and described as if “Florence Pugh played Mr Bean in a corset”, Lady Clem is endearingly delusional and catastrophically self-absorbed. Like a Jane Austen novel that’s had too much gin, and far too much laudanum, she simply cannot fathom why love isn’t knocking down her door.
So now, she’s attempting her last resort - celebrity dating.
Enter her first date (semi-willingly), actor Charlie Rowe. Her mission? To find out if he could be ‘The One’ and save her from spinsterdom. Can the trenches of modern dating played out in Lady Clem’s crumbling Regency world really be the path to romantic bliss?

Dr Anindita Ghosh (University of Manchester) explores the impact of the printing press on India and argues that print, much more than railways as is commonly understood, gave birth to the Indian nation that was born in 1947.
In this concluding programme, Anindita explores how the printing press played a fundamental role in the rise of nationalism in India. Starting with the nationalist newspapers, Anindita explores how English language papers as well as local language newspapers were crucial in forging anti-colonial sentiments among the reading public.
In response, the colonial government passed draconian acts which empowered district magistrates to seize presses of papers they deemed to be seditious. These measures applied to all publications, books and pamphlets as well as newspapers. But clamping down was not easy. Indian publishers found ingenious ways to avoid the censors. And alongside books, pamphlets and papers, there was the vast circulation of printed images that proved far more difficult to police by the colonial government than written texts.
Anindita argues that print was key to the shaping of a modern public sphere in India because print was the vehicle of critical ideas of community, history, society, culture and identity that emerged in modern India. Print was in that sense, modern India.
