“It’s a goodbye song, but it’s also an inspirational song, It could also mean a new beginning" - Ray Davies
Written by Ray Davies and released by the Kinks in 1968 'Days' had a very different sound to the rest of their repertoire.
Sorrowful but uplifting it's been embraced by listeners across the world who have found solace and hope in its lyrics.
Having been covered by numerous artists (most notably Kirsty MacColl), it speaks to people of all generations and captures moments in their lives.
For Sim Wood it's an anthem to great friendships and discovery whilst for actor Gabriel Vick it's a song that has journeyed with him from a place of fond memories to heartfelt remembrance.
John Slater, who was born the same year that it was released, has his own celebratory take on 'Days' and for Laura and John Mapes it's the song that gave them the words they so needed to express.
With contributions from rock critic and writer, Barry Miles.

The Interviewers
Sir David Frost
Following two appearances with Roy Plomley in 1963 and 1971 - Sir David Frost is castaway once more by Sue Lawley.
The veteran broadcaster is the only British TV presenter to have interviewed seven American presidents and six British Prime Ministers who has, over the past five decades, become a broadcasting institution.
Once known as a scourge of the Establishment, he's become something of an establishment figure himself, noted for his formidable contacts book, his star-studded parties, and for his gentle but revealing interviewing style.
Born in 1939, the youngest son of a Methodist minister and his wife, David was football and cricket-mad from an early age but with a burning ambition to go to Cambridge University. He arrived there in 1958, and threw himself into it, joining Footlights and editing Varsity and Granta.
After Cambridge, Ned Sherrin saw him performing a comedy act in a Mayfair bar and hired him up to present the iconic satirical programme That Was The Week That Was. Other successful programmes followed including Frost Over Britain and The Frost Report.
Breakfast with Frost ran for 12 years until early 2005. David is not retiring though and is due to present a new interview programme for Al-Jazeera International, and will also conduct occasional interviews for the BBC.

The Poetry Detective - Not in Love Poems
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects The Poetry Detective - Not in Love poems for the loveless, thwarted and unrequited. With Vanessa Kisuule.
From weddings to Valentine’s Day cards, poetry and romance go hand-in-hand.
We go to poetry to woo, to wed and to mark our love. We look to poetry not only for a reflection of how we feel but also to shape an ideal of what love could, or should be.
But what about love thwarted and unrequited, love promised and never found? People living without romantic love, or finding love but struggling to accept it?
Can poetry speak to the loveless as well as the lovers?
"What would it look like if we didn't place romantic love as the organising principle of our lives? Could life be good anyway?"
Amy Key is the author of two poetry collections. She talks to Vanessa about a treasured anthology of haiku by Japanese women. Can these tiny, potent poems - written between the 17th century and the present day - help us reckon with longing?
And we hear from Ellen Bass, the Santa Cruz-based author of that poem. She talks about the lines of Tolstoy that inspired the poem and how writing it was transformative for her.
Produced in Bristol by Mair Bosworth for BBC Audio.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2022.

Caerphilly
Ian Wylie journeys to some of Britain's hidden corners to view small towns through the lens of the people who don’t ignore them - their local reporters.
Some of the towns are struggling, others are thriving.
The one thing they have in common is they’re pretty much invisible in the eyes of the national media, even though they are home to tens of thousands of people.
They don’t have football teams. They’re not pretty resorts that attract tourists. They can’t even claim to be a contested marginal seat that will determine the outcome of a general election.
Our guides are the passionate people who remain committed to telling the stories of what’s happening in their small towns. Through their newspapers, websites and social media posts they refuse to turn the page on local news reporting - often at some personal cost.
Ian travels to Caerphilly in South Wales. It’s a small town with a familiar issue - it feels dwarfed by Cardiff, the big city nearby.

Kenneth Williams - John Baptises Jesus
Kenneth Williams’s Christian faith was a significant part of his life and impacted him deeply. At the height of his fame in the 1970s he was asked to record excerpts from the Bible. This week, as we approach what would have been his 100th birthday, the Daily Service showcases some of the recordings - many of which haven’t been broadcast until now.
The reflections are presented by Williams’ friend the Very Reverend Mark Oakley, a student at the time of their friendship and now Dean of Southwark. He explores the readings and what they tell us about the human condition and the faith of the master storyteller we hear narrating them.

Kenneth Williams - The Good Samaritan
Kenneth Williams - The Good Samaritan
Kenneth Williams’s Christian faith was a significant part of his life and impacted him deeply. At the height of his fame in the 1970s he was asked to record excerpts from the Bible. This week, as we approach what would have been his 100th birthday, the Daily Service showcases some of the recordings - many of which haven’t been broadcast until now.
The reflections are presented by Williams’ friend the Very Reverend Mark Oakley, a student at the time of their friendship and now Dean of Southwark. He explores the readings and what they tell us about the human condition and the faith of the master storyteller we hear narrating them.

TUE 10:30 Landscape With Canals and Machines: The Legacy of LTC Rolt (b00vrssh)
Hermione Cockburn and Timothy West investigate the writer LTC Rolt, and his passion for the industrial landscape.
LTC Rolt achieved something remarkable - he changed the character of the British, for the better, by altering their perception of their land and history. Before he began writing, and campaigning, our industrial landscape was regarded a desecration of a rural idyll.
It was Rolt who taught us to value it, to appreciate its beauty and to appreciate the achievements of those who created the great engines, viaducts, lighthouses, ships and railways that revolutionised Britain - and the world.
The father of industrial archaeology, Rolt wrote definitive biographies of the Stephensons, Brunel, Watt and Telford. He wrote about railways, aeronautics and cars (his 1920s Alvis is still going), and 'High Horse Riderless' is an important early work of environmental philosophy. Plus he wrote fiction, including ghost stories.
His book 'Narrowboat' led to the establishment of the Inland Waterways Association and the canal network's navigation channels, structures, towpaths, bridges, tunnels and aqueducts were saved in the nick of time.
Rolt is now recognised as a pioneer of the leisure industry. He went on to rescue the bankrupt Talyllyn narrow-gauge railway and taught volunteers to restore, then run it. Such an endeavour had never been attempted before but now this is a model for renovation and conservation schemes all over contemporary Britain, and all over the world.
Hermione Cockburn , with help from Timothy West (who also has a narrowboat) and Rolt's widow, Sonia, tells the story of this remarkable engineer and author and reveals how his work shapes our thinking today - not just about our past but how we deal with it for the future.

Series 1
Holiday with John Finnemore
Susan Calman is the least relaxed person she knows.
She has no down time, no hobbies (unless you count dressing up your cats in silly outfits) and her idea of relaxation is to play Grand Theft Auto, an hour into which she is in a murderous rage with sky-high blood pressure. Her wife had to threaten to divorce her to make her go on holiday last year. Her first for four years. But she's been told by the same long-suffering wife that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.
So Susan is looking at her options to try and immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity. Can she ditch the old Susan Calman and attempt to find the new Susan Calm?
This time, John Finnemore takes her on a spontaneous holiday.
Keep Calman Carry On is an audience stand up show in which Susan reports on how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts.
It's an attempt to find out how people find solace or sanctuary in these worlds and how Susan can negotiate her own place in them.

3. Where is Love?
Lionel Bart was a unique musical talent. He found fame with the hugely successful musicals Oliver! and 'Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be', but he was also a hit-making machine for some of Britain's first rock'n'roll stars - Tommy Steele, Marty Wilde and Cliff Richard, as well as giving the James Bond movie franchise its first song. He grew up in Stepney and worked at both the Unity Theatre and Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop in Stratford East.
He socialised with figures from both serious and populist culture, and experienced a downfall that was as spectacular as his theatrical triumphs.
David and Caroline Stafford's biography of Bart draws on previously unseen archive sources and interviews with those closest to him.
Today, Bart gives Cliff Richard his first number one and begins work on his own musical masterpiece, 'Oliver!'

Conservative backbencher 'Rosie Holt MP' is known for her car crash interviews. Rosie is full of passionate conviction - but that conviction changes depending on the demands of the moment, especially if it means being closer to power. Depressed about the almost certain imminent Labour landslide election victory she "crosses the floor", just in time to be on the winning side in the 2024 election, where she finds herself in a Labour Government.
The far-left factions terrify her while the centrists can't be persuaded to believe in anything remotely radical. Meanwhile, her Tory party friends relay tales of how the Conservatives are becoming increasingly deranged in defeat.

Self on Sebald
WG Sebald created extraordinary fictions with Austerlitz, The Emigrants and The Rings of Saturn, that hovered between the real and the imagined.
He died in 2001 aged 57. Will Self pieces together the writer's life and words.
With images and simple, yet fantastically powerful writing he told stories of loss, exile and loneliness that spoke to his own personal life. A German living in England, writing in his native tongue, haunted by history and existing in two worlds. That of his fatherland which had exterminated its Jewish populations and made a compact with memory and truth. And an England that had firebombed German cities during the war. The second silence in post war German writing and thought.
In works like Austerlitz, where the burden of memory and forgetting unhinges its central character, a former Kindertransport refugee, the past silts up before breaking through in unexpected ways. The Emigrants delicately portrays the lives in exile and return of German Jewish survivors whereas The Rings of Saturn evokes landscape and the past in unsettling yet subtle ways.
Will Self has long been drawn to the multi-layered worlds of WG Sebald's fiction. Here, in the company of Sebald biographer Carole Angier and former friend, poet Stephen Watts, Self moves through the Sebaldian landscape whilst exploring the archive devoted to one of the truly great writers of the late 20th Century.

With no live studio audience, John Finnemore took the opportunity to try something completely new.
Every episode in this series of Souvenir Programme is made up of scenes from one person's life, played in reverse order.
There's no narrative to the episode; it's still a sketch show, not a sitcom... but the sketches in each episode all happened to one person, played by one member of the cast, over the course of their lifetime.
This episode is all about Deborah, and takes place between a catchup Zoom in lockdown one, and a bedtime story she was told in 1962.

Finlay Christie Is Younger Than You
In this Stand-up Special Finlay Christie makes his Radio 4 debut in front of a live audience at The Brunswick in Brighton.
He provides insight into how he and his generation have grown into the adults they’re now expected to be. Using new and existing material from his critically acclaimed Edinburgh shows he’ll cover topics like; the expectations of different generations; “pensioners complaining they can’t heat their house. That sounds like a boast – You’ve got a house?!’ ...”
- the differences between the generations; “People say young people are more sensitive, but every generation is sensitive, we’re just sensitive about different stuff. We’re sensitive about pronouns, old people are sensitive about Princess Diana.”
- how his generation feel about the world; "Gen Z are very nihilistic. World’s gonna end in our lifetimes and we don’t care. One girl in Sweden cared and that made the news.”
“TikTok has made me see people who watch films as intellectuals. Ooh, you have a penchant for cinéma?? Ohohoho.”
And how it now feels to be a man; “ the difference between Man and Boy - "Landlord bad…. rent boy..nice….” " “It’s a boy” - “congratulations”. “It’s a man” - “allegations.”
At 19, Finlay became one of the youngest ever winners of the prestigious So You Think You’re Funny competition, following in the footsteps of Peter Kay, Lee Mack and Sarah Millican. 3 years later, his debut Edinburgh show “OK Zoomer” was nominated for NextUp’s “Best Show” award and was released as a special in October 2023. His material, based around his experience as a Gen Z, led Chortle to describe him as “the voice of his generation.”

Ian goes to Hawick in the Scottish Borders, where he meets the editor of a new and thriving local newspaper and discovers the fate of a well-known wool factory.

Kenneth Williams - The Hidden Treasure
Kenneth Williams - The Hidden Treasure
Kenneth Williams’s Christian faith was a significant part of his life and impacted him deeply. At the height of his fame in the 1970s he was asked to record excerpts from the Bible. This week, as we approach what would have been his 100th birthday, the Daily Service showcases some of the recordings - many of which haven’t been broadcast until now.
The reflections are presented by Williams’ friend the Very Reverend Mark Oakley, a student at the time of their friendship and now Dean of Southwark. He explores the readings and what they tell us about the human condition and the faith of the master storyteller we hear narrating them.

Walt Disney
Gerald Scarfe, merciless cartoon satirist of political figures, chooses an icon who created icons: Walt Disney.
Matthew Parris, Gerald Scarfe and guest experts Brian Sibley and Richard Williams, creator of Roger Rabbit, discuss the life of a complex cultural icon.
Gerald Scarfe spent much of his childhood in his sick bed, so it's not surprising that Disney cartoons and feature films meant so much to him. He can still recall the thrill at the prospect of seeing Pinocchio at the cinema, and then the agony of being lead away again in the rain because the tickets were too expensive.
Walt Disney came from a working family. His god-fearing father Elias, said by one writer to have 'hated Capital, and favoured Labour, but really needed to make a buck', found work where he could. So Walt lived a peripatetic childhood, and sought solace in drawing and play acting.
Hard times early on did not make Walt frugal with money in adulthood, and despite the huge successes of the golden era of Disney, it was only with the opening of Disneyland that Walt attained any substantial personal wealth.
You don't have to look far to find myth surrounding Walt Disney.
Even after his death, rumours that his body had been cryogenically frozen spread so widely that they soon slipped into folklore. He had actually been cremated, but the readiness with which the cryogenic claim was accepted perhaps bears witness to a man who was terrified of dying, who believed in the white hope of technology and who, some might say, had been searching all his life for an escape into an immortal, fairy-tale world.
A man who was seemingly unpretentious, and did not fit the image of movie mogul with his scruffy tweed jacket and awkward demeanour, yet a man who was accused of being a tyrannical egomaniac. The son of a socialist who ended up naming names at the House of Un- American Activities committee. Above all else perhaps though, they discuss the life of a man who strove tirelessly for perfection and who changed the cultural landscape of a little boy called Gerald, and arguably of the world, for ever.
Gerald Scarfe himself is best known for his classic images lampooning the great and the good of politics, and also in his iconic animation for Pink Floyd's The Wall. He reveals in this programme that he also spent time working on the Disney production Hercules.

I Only Have Eyes For You
When I Only Have Eyes For You first emerged in 1934 it was a jaunty ditty written by Harry Dubin and Al Warren for the movie "Dames". But it gained huge popularity when the 1950s doo wop group The Flamingos under the musical arrangement of Terry Johnson transformed it into a dreamy otherworldly love song. Terry explains how he went about turning the song into an evergreen hit that has been covered by many including Art Garfunkel and Carly Simon.
Musicologist Luis Cruz attributes the genius of the song to its pedal chord - the repeated use of the C note. It adds to the feeling of fixation he says where the singer cannot see anyone else but the object of his affection.
The song is obviously one that speaks of deep love and Vivian Fransen was one of many who chose the song to play at her wedding. She'd been introduced to the Art Garfunkel version in 1975 when she met the man who was to become her husband. 12 years later he revealed a secret he'd been keeping from her which ended their marriage and caused her to reassess the song's meaning.
Jess Farr Cox would sing the song to her aged rescue dog Pico as his health deteriorated. Only that song and the theme to Antiques Roadshow would send him to sleep when he was in pain and distress and she still gets emotional when she hears it over a year after he was eventually put to sleep. People underestimate the love you get from a rescue dog, she says.
Chris Deerin is a political journalist and part of Scottish band Fat Cops. He recorded a version of I Only Have Eyes For You for the Tiny Changes Young People's Mental Health Charity founded following the death of the singer Scott Hutchison in 2018. Chris says he and fellow musician Bobby Bluebell had always loved the song and felt it was a fitting tribute to fellow musician Scott.

FRI 10:30 Chant (b04lpzz2)
Richard Coles delves into the 1990's when a recording of Benedictine monks singing became so popular it sold in the millions around the world.
If an album of classical music sold anywhere near one million copies at that time, it was considered unusual. For one to sell more than that was unprecedented. Adding further to this phenomenon was the fact that this was unfamiliar music at the time, Gregorian Chant, performed not by celebrity artists who might attract a large following, but by monks from a remote corner of Northern Spain. EMI marketed this album Canto Gregoriano, or Chant as it was named in America, as a unique antidote to stress.
Richard Coles with former EMI employees Kick Klimbie and Jane McCann, retrace EMI's marketing tactics in the promotion of Canto Gregoriano. Professor Adrian North will also be providing insights throughout the programme into the psychology of marketing, exploring what drives people to buy certain things, and how music can impact upon us physically and emotionally.
Richard Coles also takes a trip to the Isle of Wight, where Gregorian Chant is still an important aspect of life at both St Cecilia's Abbey and Quarr Abbey, and questions whether such music is still capable of having any meaning or impact upon our lives in the twenty-first century.
