5. 200 Miles From Home
Only 200 miles from his home in Shetland, and his starting point, Malachy Tallack reaches the west coast of Norway.
It's the final destination on his journey along the 60th parallel.
Marking a borderland between 'near' and 'far north', the 60th parallel wraps itself around the lower reaches of Finland, Sweden and Norway.
It crosses the tip of Greenland and of South Central Alaska and cuts the great spaces of Russia and Canada in half.
The parallel also passes through Shetland, at the very top of the British Isles.
Malachy travelled to some of the places that share this latitude, beginning in Shetland, where he has spent most of his life.
Wrestling with notions of home and belonging, he hoped that the journey would help him come to terms with his father's untimely death.
Focusing on the landscapes and natural environments of the parallel, and the way that people have interacted with those landscapes, Tallack explores themes of wildness and community, of isolation and engagement, of exile and memory.

SAT 07:30 Teller of the Unexpected: The Life of Roald Dahl (Omnibus) (m002mlh6)
Matthew Dennison’s biography of the creator of many much-loved literary characters.
The familiar image of Roald Dahl is that of an old man, a tall, stooping figure usually dressed in a long cardigan, a rug over his knees in his writing hut.
In actual fact, one of our greatest storytellers was once a young dashing, very tall, handsome chap who women were very much drawn to.
He was brought up by his feisty Norwegian mother, and her love of the country myths and folk tales of the North influenced his writing. A flying accident which nearly killed him ended his war career, which was followed by time in Washington, where he began his writing career with short stories.
There he met the beautiful actress Patricia Neal and began a family.
Tragedy struck when his elder daughter died from measles, his baby son was nearly killed in a road accident in New York, and his wife suffered a near fatal stroke from which he almost single-handedly forced her back into good health.
For all his life he remained unafraid to court controversy, or to make his views known forcefully.

Centenary Castaways
Brian Aldiss
Author Brian Aldiss is castaway by Kirsty Young.
Brian is best known for pioneering, alongside JG Ballard, a new wave of British science-fiction writing in the 1960s.
He says sci-fi is not so much a prediction of the future as a metaphor for the human condition; and for him, at least, writing it offered an escape route and a filter through which to view his own extraordinary upbringing.
He grew up in a small Norfolk village in a very devout and austere home. While his father was distant, his mother was still suffering from the grief after her first child, a daughter, was still-born. He was the second child and even when he was very small, remembers feeling a strong sense of his mother's disappointment in him.
The army finally offered a way out for him and it was on his return to England that he started writing seriously while also working in a bookshop.
One of his early works was a short story describing the sadness felt by a boy who was never able to please his parents, which was turned into a film by Stanley Kubrick.
While he remains best known for his science-fiction writing - and has won every major award in the field - he has also written novels, poetry and biographies and short stories.
Now, he says, he aims not for high sales but to become a better and better writer.
Born on 18th August 1925, Brian joins 4 Extra's 100 Club and is one of our Centenary Castaways. He died aged 92 in 2017.

Kiwi
New Zealand had several species of flightless bird living across the islands, all of which are now extinct, bar one.
The Kiwi bird has become an iconic species of the country, like the Koala in Australia, the Giraffe in Africa and the Alpaca in South America.
Historically, New Zealand didn't have ground predators such as wild cats and stoats - which allowed birds to exploit living on the ground. Being flightless in New Zealand was a good way to be a bird.
Having filmed Kiwis, Sir David Attenborough muses on the niche the Kiwi occupies on the ground. He argues the Kiwi behaves more like a mammal than a bird, but what mammal do you think, in his view, the Kiwi resembles most..?

And Dr Altaf Saadi tells us about a Lucille Clifton poem she has carried in her pocket for many years and that has given her strength as a woman of Iranian-Iraqi heritage who came to the US a month before 9/11. A poem that Tara Betts also carries with her - as a tattoo covering her left arm.

Death Watch Beetle and Queen Wasp
Alison Steadman and Bill Paterson star as a bossy queen wasp and a death watch beetle as they reveal the truth about life in a draughty old attic in a house in Amersham.
The first of three tales, written and introduced by Lynne Truss.
Death Watch Beetle ...... Bill Paterson
Queen Wasp ...... Alison Steadman
The Death Watch Beetle is a wood-boring beetle. Having spent twelve years as a larva boring through a single rafter in the house with no one to talk to, our beetle is now an adult with about 5 weeks left to live. He has just three aims in life:
Firstly, to find a mate, which he does by banging his head on the timber "Oh Come on girls, .. I know you're out there ... Don't tell me this attic has ever seen such a specimen before. This lovely compact dark brown capsule of hard cuticle covered with yellowish scale-like hair and just under a centimetre long - it could all be yours!
Secondly, to make as much noise as he can.
And finally, to live long enough to see the roof cave in.
The Queen Wasp is very, very bossy, and very, very stressed. She carries the entire responsibility for the wasp colony and its thousands of inhabitants, all of whom are her own progeny. There is an enormous amount of work to be done.
"They call themselves workers, these girls, but quite frankly, none of them knows what real work actually is." It is lonely at the top too," I did consider leaving all this, at one point. None of them knows this; they'd be heartbroken to think I might have left them" and she is just beginning to lose her grip. "Bring me my list" she constantly yells.
Life doesn't get much more stressful than this.

Producer: Sarah Blunt.

1. Getting Together
Eric Morecambe met Ernie Wise for the first time at the Swansea Empire in the 1930s.
They were appearing as separate acts in one of Jack Hylton’s touring variety shows.
Both were successful child stars, and each instantly recognised a kindred spirit. They were soon touring together with Sadie, Eric’s redoubtable mother, finding them digs and looking out for them.
The duo learnt their trade the hard way with periods of 'resting' and several flops. On the Ed Sullivan show in New York they had to re-write virtually the entire act for the American sense of humour. But the hard won experience gained on the way up proved the making of them.
With brilliant writers like Eddie Braben, Morecambe and Wise found success first at ATV, then at the BBC with The Morecambe and Wise Show, which included stunning and legendary sketches with Andre Previn, Shirley Bassey and Angela Rippon.
Morecambe and Wise became a national institution, with their shows topping the ratings right up until the end.
The story of the much-loved comic duo is written by Louis Barfe
Abridged in five parts by Libby Spurrier
Read by Penelope Keith, who famously appeared in one of their BBC TV shows.

Erno Goldfinger's Last Architectural Assistant
Andrew McGibbon analyses great artists at a significant time in their careers, but from the perspective of someone who worked for them, inspired them, employed them or even did their job for them while no one was looking.
Anyone driving along London's A40 Westway cannot fail to notice Trellick Tower, architect Erno Goldfinger's brutalist monument to the ideals of 20th century, urban residential living.
James Dunnett was the last architectural assistant to Erno Goldfinger, the great evangelist of the brutalist school of residential architecture, towards the end of his career in 1973 when public opinion turned against tower blocks as a form of social housing.
The great émigré architect now found that he had to don his best suit, swallow his astonishing pride and start looking for work.
A moving and fascinating account of the last days of Goldfinger whose iconic and now listed Trellick Tower, controversially fell out of fashion when it opened in 1972.
Yet it has not only become a listed building but spurred the imagination of writer JG Ballard in his novel High Rise. It's also been the visual backdrop to many futuristic urban dystopias.
Written and presented by Andrew McGibbon.

MON 10:30 Tick Box Art (b0938p7s)
Is it possible, or desirable, to measure the quality of an artwork?
In a world of shrinking resources, the question of how we decide which art should receive finance is ever more pressing.
Rosemary Laryea asks if, when putting money into good quality art is the goal, it's possible to set criteria to judge what makes "good art".
Rosemary talks to members of the public looking at - and arguing about - artwork, and discusses questions of artistic taste and judgement. She also hears from the jazz musician and rap artist Soweto Kinch, playwright Simon Stephens and filmmaker Destiny Ekaragha.
Tiffany Jenkins makes the case for critics and Barry Smith, a philosopher of the senses, and the art critic Lynda Neade explore the idea of taste, subjective pleasure and expertise.
Arts Council England has trialled a method of measuring quality in the art it funds, called Quality Metrics. Audiences, artists and arts organisations are invited to assess artworks - exhibitions, dance pieces, digital art, poetry, theatre, music events and more - across a range of criteria, and become part of a conversation about what constitutes quality.
Rosemary wonders whether this might be a way of finally answering the question of how we know something is good, while Dr Sarah Garfinkel shows that it might be our hearts, or rather our heartbeats, that hold the clue to understanding and mapping our aesthetic response.

Frank Skinner and guests Ian Smith, Jo Caulfield, Rachel Parris and Pierre Novellie discuss looking too much at cats, looking too much like dogs and what to do when your crowbar is the wrong size.
This is the panel game based on what we all sit down and do at least once a day – shop online and leave a review, as an all-star panel celebrate the good, the bad and the baffling.
Everyone has an online life, and when the great British public put pen to keyboard to leave a review, they almost always write something hilarious. And our panel have to work out just what they were reviewing – and maybe contribute a few reviews of their own. So if you’re the person who went on Trip Advisor to review Ben Nevis as “Very steep and too high”, this show salutes you!

TUE 10:30 The Manchester Writers (b00tbck6)
John Harris explores the work of a group of authors who captured a northern social realism in the 1930s.
Their writing went on to shape the views of northern living for generations.
Walter Greenwood, Howard Spring and Louis Golding wrote about Greater Manchester at a time of severe economic depression and great poverty and their novels describe conditions that have resonances with our life today - cuts in welfare, increased unemployment and a coalition government.
Greenwood's 'Love on the Dole', Golding's 'Magnolia Street' and Spring's 'Fame is the Spur' depict a tough, working class life and although the three authors wrote from slightly different perspectives, they describe people enduring a grim, hard existence in an industrial landscape.
As the final parts of industrial Manchester and Salford are finally transformed by investment and modernisation, we visit the streets that inspired these authors.
How has their work endured and influenced ideas of northern England?

Being Bored: The Importance Of Doing Nothing
Is boredom under threat?
There are more TV channels than we can count, Smartphones keep us engaged around the clock, and the constant white noise of social media coerces us to always 'interact'. In fact, there is so much to stimulate our everyday lives in this digital age that we need never be bored ever again.
So do we still need to be bored? And what would we miss if we did eliminate boredom completely from our lives?
The happily bored Phill Jupitus takes a creative look at our attitude to this misunderstood emotion.
He's examining what boredom is, and how it has influenced our leisure time, our workplaces, our creativity and our evolution. Phill will examine its impact on comedy, art, music, and TV, taking us from punk to prison, from JRR Tolkien to Sherlock Holmes, from Danish sex clubs to London's 'Boring Conference'.
It's a lively look at the simple, very real and essential emotion of boredom, and a stout defence of the right to sometimes just sit down and do nothing.

Lovecraft (Not the Sex Shop in Cardiff)
Carys Eleri’s comedy-science-music-show about the neuroscience of love and loneliness and the importance of kindness.
Performed live days before the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020.
Lovecraft (Not the sex shop in Cardiff) is a one woman, comedy-science-music-show about the neuroscience of love and loneliness.
First performed in 2018 at Cardiff’s Festival of Voice, it has been to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Machynlleth Comedy Festival and Adelaide Fringe Festival where it won Best Cabaret award.
The show tackles the stigma around loneliness and breaks it down scientifically for what it is and how Carys Eleri came to recognise it in herself and combat it by finding love in different ways through the medium of rats and songs and science. It is essentially a celebration of community, a wider sense of love and the scientific importance of kindness.
Bringing down this well researched lesson to a 28 minute radio format has been quite the challenge, where songs about tits have been sacrificed to make way for an updated narrative as the show is now visited through the lens of the pandemic with new lessons learned of ways to cope in isolation.
Writer composer and producer: Carys Eleri

Neuroscientist consultant: Dr. Dean Burnett

THU 10:30 The Strange Parallel World Of Christian Pop (b008x9my)
From the early 1960s on, Britain's lively pop scene was inspiring a parallel world, inhabited by Christian beat groups. In all aspects except lyrics, their records closely resembled the ones in the charts.
Some, like the Salvation Army's group, the Joystrings, had hits. But the majority received very little airplay on UK radio, and groups relied on churches and coffee bars for live bookings.
When Paul Bayley began finding their old records in charity shops, he recognised the quality of the music.
Now, with the help of some of the original musicians, he tells their story.
