Harvest Moon
It's a love song about growing old.
Neil Young's Harvest Moon released in 1992 is a nod to 1970s country rock.
It's loved by music blogger Alyson Young. It's also a grown up song about love says singer-songwriter Ricky Ross.
How do you make the magic last and how do you keep love alive?
People tell their stories about what the song means to them: jazz singer Maureen Washington danced to the song with her late husband.
Amanda Legere played it to her premature baby daughter when she went to see her in the ICU. She knows the baby responded to that song.
Mary Divine and her husband were serenaded on their wedding anniversary during lockdown. The whole neighbourhood came out to watch a teenage neighbour play Harvest Moon for them.
Margy Waller drove to work at the White House on the final days of Bill Clinton's Presidency listening to Harvest Moon because she needed to cry. For her it's a song about loss. She is still touched by it today during the pandemic in what she describes as another period of great loss.
Versions of Harvest Moon include those by:

On one side of the counter Angela interacts with the takeaway’s loyal staff, Cecilia, Dewi and Lowri.
On the other side, she enjoys family dinners before service - dishes a world away from the simplified, watered-down Western version ordered by the locals. To the Huis, food is love and symbolises family.
A blending of her Welsh and Chinese heritage, the takeaway was a place that embodied the dual identities that Angela herself was experiencing.

Centenary Castaways
Robert Hardy
Actor Robert Hardy shares his castaway choices with Kirsty Young.
Robert became a household name as the vet Siegfried Farnon in the hit BBC TV series All Creatures Great and Small and, to a younger generation, he is the Minister of Magic in the Harry Potter films.
But the role he is best known for is Winston Churchill - he won a BAFTA for his performance in ITV's Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years.
He believes actors are born rather than made and his own ambitions crystallised when, as a very young boy, he was a page boy at a wedding:
"I walked down the aisle with my head held high and as I went, every eye was turned towards me and something inside me said, "That's it, get every eye on you".
Born on 29th October 1925, Robert joins 4 Extra's 100 Club and is one of our Centenary Castaways. He died aged 91 in 2017.

He was considered to be one of England's most significant 20th century poets.
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive to select Adventures in Poetry - Philip Larkin: At Grass.
Inspired by the death of the Ascot-winning racehorse Brown Jack in 1948, At Grass is one of the most popular post-war English poems.
Written in January 1950, its enduring appeal owes much to the vivid description of a summer racecourse and the quiet aftermath of horses living out their retirement days.
Stephen Regan explores the themes and impact of Larkin's lyrical evocation of retired racehorses and a vanished England.
With contributions from:

1. Departure
Marking a borderland between 'near' and 'far north', the 60th parallel wraps itself around the lower reaches of Finland, Sweden and Norway.
It crosses the tip of Greenland and of South Central Alaska and cuts the great spaces of Russia and Canada in half.
The parallel also passes through Shetland, at the very top of the British Isles.
Malachy Tallack travelled to some of the places that share this latitude, beginning in Shetland, where he has spent most of his life.
Wrestling with notions of home and belonging, he hoped that the journey would help him come to terms with his father's untimely death.
Focusing on the landscapes and natural environments of the parallel, and the way that people have interacted with those landscapes, Tallack explores themes of wildness and community, of isolation and engagement, of exile and memory.
Abridged in five parts by Laurence Wareing.

Lindsay Kemp's Ballerina
Andrew McGibbon analyses great artists at a significant time in their careers, but from the perspective of someone who worked for them, inspired them, employed them - or even did their job for them while no one was looking.
Naomi Sorkin was Lindsay Kemp's ballerina on an outrageous European tour with the mime and dance impresario in the early 1980s.
She joined The American Ballet company in New York, one of the world's finest, becoming a highly acclaimed leading soloist. But tiring of the strictures of ballet company life, Naomi decided to thrust herself into Lindsay's colourful, joyously camp and profoundly sexual mime theatre - a total change of direction.
Today, she teaches ballet and is a high end interior designer - but, back then, Naomi's decision to dance improvised ballet with Lindsay's touring company forced her to reassess her career by embracing Kemp's whirlwind of mime, dance and on stage debauchery.
It was also Lindsay Kemp who famously taught David Bowie his most striking moves and co-created with him the famous Ziggy Stardust stage show. Kemp continues to tour across the world.
Written and presented by Andrew McGibbon.

MON 10:30 Why Go? (b00s9g0b)
The game of Go expresses "a psychological essence" of the Far East, according to the British Museum's Dr Irving Finkel.
It's ancient, but no-one knows quite how old - the claim that it originated 4,000 years ago is open to question.
What's beyond doubt is its place in oriental culture. The remarkable cave of Buddhist treasures discovered at Dunhuang on the Silk Road through China included a 6th century Go manual now kept in the British Library. Miniature Go boards and pieces have turned up in ancient burial sites.
In the 20th century, some of Japan's finest writers turned to Go for inspiration, following major games and probing the psychology of the top players.
And, as the first atomic bomb fell, two of the world's best exponents of Go were playing a title match on the outskirts of Hiroshima.
But Go is little known in the West. This is in spite of the efforts of one of the two players in what became known as the Atom Bomb Game, Iwamoto Kaoru, who spent his later years setting up Go Centres in Europe and the Americas.
Chris Ledgard explores the world of Go, talking to experts in the East and West about the game's history and culture, and examining some of its ancient artefacts.
Dr Finkel discusses Go's place in the history of games. After Go, he says, "you could argue that the world's board games went downhill." Susan Whitfield, the Director of the International Dunhuang Project, brings the 1500 year Go manual out of storage and explains how it was discovered and what it tells us.
Britain's two foremost experts on the game describe how they got hooked, and Chris Ledgard visits Amsterdam to examine Iwamoto Kaoru's legacy and find out why, in spite of all the time and money he spent, relatively few people in Europe play the game.
Go's Chinese name is weiqi, which is often translated as "the surrounding game". It's a game of co-existence. Two players, one with black stones the other with white, place their pieces on the intersections of a board marked with 19 x 19 lines.
The aim is to secure territory and the emphasis is on long-term strategy, subtlety, and not bludgeoning your opponent. Rob Foster, a translator of the Dunhuang manal, describes the game as "a conversation...it's hand talk".

2. Fort Smith
Wrestling with notions of home and belonging, writer Malachy Tallack has set out from Shetland on a journey around the sixtieth parallel. Today, he arrives in Canada, bound for Fort Smith, just inside the Northwest Territories.
Marking a borderland between 'near' and 'far north', the sixtieth parallel wraps itself around the lower reaches of Finland, Sweden and Norway; it crosses the tip of Greenland and of South Central Alaska; it cuts the great spaces of Russia and Canada in half. The parallel also passes through Shetland, at the very top of the British Isles.
Tallack travelled to some of the places that share this latitude, beginning in Shetland, where he has spent most of his life. Focusing on the landscapes and natural environments of the parallel, and the way that people have interacted with those landscapes, Tallack explores themes of wildness and community, of isolation and engagement, of exile and memory.

TUE 10:30 A Picture Held Us Captive (b0938c6w)
Novelist, Harvard Fellow and Social Entrepreneur Zia Haider Rahman explores the powerful impact the use and abuse of metaphor can have on the world around us.
Metaphors are not simply there for the use of novelists or poets. They are integral to the way we think and understand - pervading our language and allowing us to conceptualise new and complex ideas, using familiar images. They are essential to areas of abstract study, where they provide the basis for new theoretical models, and play a vital role in communicating specialised knowledge to non-experts.
But, Rahman argues, these compelling imaginary pictures can also become prisons, trapping our thought in over simplistic or entirely false versions of a more nuanced or entirely different reality. Drawing on examples from the worlds of biology, economics, business and environmental policy, he demonstrates the very real and damaging consequences these metaphors can have.
Biologist Stephen Rose and Sociologist Hilary Rose discuss how the misleading metaphors of genetics built the popular enthusiasm for the field's apparently miraculous powers. Economist and Green MEP Molly Scott Cato explains what happened when the "natural capital" metaphor took on a life of its own. Economist John Weeks dissects the metaphors of austerity, “balancing the budget” and “the national credit card”. And novelist and ex-McKinsey consultant Dina Nayeri demonstrates how the world of business pushes metaphors to the edge of meaning.

Animals
Taking part in Strictly Come Dancing made Susan Calman happy. Completely, totally happy. And having lived with anxiety for so long, it was something of a surprise to discover something new that gave her feelings of joy. So, in Susan Calman Makes Me Happy, she explores and explains the other things in life that bring her happiness.
This week, aided and abetted by her studio audience and her wife Lee, Susan waxes lyrical about her love for animals. She may have previously mentioned (once or twice) that she’s quite partial to cats, but her affections aren’t limited to the feline world. From the dogs in her local park, via the birds that visit her garden, to grumpy Icelandic Ponies (well, sort of), Susan adores them all.

Man of the People: Paul Graney's Story
Jeffrey Richards tells the story of Paul Graney who dedicated his life to recording audio of 20th century history.
Although Paul Graney was, in his own words, "an ordinary bloke" from the North West, he left as his legacy an extraordinary collection of audio recordings that reflected the changing lives of ordinary people in the first half of the 20th century.
He spent months living rough during the Depression, helped to organise the Manchester contingent of the Jarrow March, fought against Mosley's Blackshirts, and saw Hitler rousing his supporters in Berlin.
Later, he became a collector of folk music from across the world, saving hundreds of traditional songs from fading out of memory.
