SAT 00:30 Folk Song, Art Song (b01gg7dm)
Christopher Maltman is an award-winning opera singer and recitalist. Alongside the lieders, chansons and art songs of his recital repertoire, he loves nothing more than performing folk song settings.
Audiences often respond well, but not all among the folk-singing fraternity are enthusiastic about this genre borrowing. Some contend that folk songs lose much of their impact when refined and beautified for the recital stage.
Christopher talks to folk singer Eliza Carthy and scholars Georgina Boyes and Tim Healey about the uneasy relationship between the two musical worlds.
Is the antagonism musical or to do with very English attitudes to class and accent? And why is it that so many of his opera-singing colleagues from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and further afield, have no such animosity from their respective folk cultures?
Christopher also talks to his regular recital accompanist Julius Drake and senior colleague Sir Thomas Allen about the best way of approaching this music, searching for a performance that is genuine to singer and song alike.
Producer: Tom Alban
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2012.

Series 2
Wallace
It was the great travel books written in the 19th century by Alfred Russel Wallace that inspired Sir David Attenborough himself to achieve great things in the realm of natural history.
But Attenborough tells us that Wallace was more than just a great travel writer.
His power of meticulous observation and recording as he explored many parts of the world were in the highest league imaginable, even for Victorian standards - and his power of analysis very much in line with Darwin, his great contemporary.
Wallace independently came up with a theory of evolution that was in parallel to Darwin's thinking - two field naturalists breaking huge conventions of the time and coming up with the single most important theory in Biology. How did they resolve the conflict between themselves?

We Sigh for Houses
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects We Sigh for Houses.
Poet Aviva Dautch revisits her childhood as the daughter of a chronic hoarder.
From sleeping in the bath, to the ever-present danger of fire, to clearing the house after her mother’s death, Aviva shares what it means to be the child of a hoarder and how her lyrical, precise images seek to make order from the chaos in which she grew up.
Questions about how she or, indeed, others could cope with such conditions under the restrictions of lockdown inform how Aviva tells her story.
She weaves together her poems and conversations with friends - author and her former schoolteacher Sherry Ashworth, professional declutterer Miriam Osner and actor Juliet Stevenson.
Juliet reads from the poems of Emily Dickinson, who spent much of her life isolated in her parents’ home but wrote expansively about the world.
Aviva and Juliet explore why her poems reverberate for them in the current moment and discuss the positive aspects of isolation, the necessity of the arts for helping us feel less alone and how creativity can be a response to adversity.
The programme features poems from Aviva’s Primers Three sequence (2018) and her debut collection We Sigh For Houses, which has received an Authors’ Foundation Award from the Society of Authors.

Tawny Owl
Chris Sperring is looking for a tawny owl in the middle of Bristol.
The tawny owl is fairly adaptable. Predominantly brown in colour, with huge eyes; the size of a wood pigeon. It could quite easily disappear into the background in the leafy area of a city, as long as there are enough small mammals to sustain it.
Chris meets Professor Stephen Harris, who is one of the UK's leading experts in small mammals.
Chris goes deeper into the city, to a green area with trees. Here the tawny owls have some cover and somewhere to hunt from.
But does all the noise and motion from people and machinery disturb the owls?

Inner Voices - The Burton Diaries
The archive of Richard Burton is a treasure.
Hamlet, Under Milk Wood, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Equus stand out.
Then there are the movies: Wild Geese, Where Eagles Dare, Antony and Cleopatra, Night of the Iguana and The Robe.
Through several periods of Burton's life, most notably from the mid-1960s to the early '70s he kept a diary, sometimes handwritten, mostly typed out and assembled in thick notebooks.
The diaries provide a unique view of the world in which he moved, among actors and directors, writers and poets, millionaires and royalty.
They also give an insight into his approach to acting, his insecurities, his drinking and his volatile relationship with Elizabeth Taylor at a time when they were the most famous couple in the world.
Shortly after Burton's death in 1984, Melvyn Bragg was given access to the diaries to write his biography of Burton, Rich.
Burton was the son of a Welsh miner.
He met a remarkable teacher and made the journey to Oxford and on to fame and fortune but was seldom really happy.
He was a hellraiser who often behaved appallingly and was accused of squandering an extraordinary talent on drinking and bad movies. But Burton was also a man of wonderful erudition, passion, insight and self- knowledge.
He fought his way through life through force of will, love, and voracious reading. It is this side of the man that makes him such a remarkable presence. It is also a side of him captured in a rich vein of BBC archive and interviews.

This is the first of Mark’s two shows from Shetland, recorded in front of an audience in Lerwick. Later in the series he’ll also be visiting Unst, the UK’s most northerly inhabited island.
This is the 14th series of Mark's award winning show where he travels around the country visiting towns that have nothing in common but their uniqueness. After thoroughly researching each town, Mark writes and performs a bespoke evening of comedy for a local audience.

How Richard Burton Got His Voice
Film presenter Antonia Quirke reports from Pontrhydyfen a small village in the Afan Valley, in Neath Port Talbot in South Wales.
This is the birthplace of one of her favourite movie actors; Richard Burton. Here she uncovers the development of his cinematic voice.
Antonia uses Burton's voice to illustrate how cinematic voices have changed. She meets with leading dialect coach Penny Dyer to deconstruct it along with examining the new methods deployed in today's films
Richard Burton had a strong Welsh accent and a weak voice as a child. However when his adoptive father saw how talented he was at remembering Shakespeare and other poetry, he ironed out the Welsh accent and took him outside to the valleys to project loudly across them.
For months and years the young Richard did this - literally yelling King Lear across the mountains - until he arrived at the incomparably strong almost-Welsh voice we know and love.
Burton's voice was idiosyncratic, often strange and powerful with unusual speech patterns. His public and private voice was one and the same.
Sian Phillips discusses her film roles alongside Burton, and in a new study, cultural historian Peter Stead tells how Burton's Welshness shaped his character and career.
We also hear from actor and voice over artist Simon Greenall and impressionist Jon Culshaw who dissect Burton's voice and reveal how they create their own vocal sounds and adapt their mimicry.

TUE 10:30 June Whitfield: 90 Not Out (b06s8556)
1. Take It From Here to Happy Ever After
In an age of instant celebrity, what does it take to maintain a long career in entertainment?
June Whitfield was one of our best-known faces and most widely loved stars.
In the first of two parts, Joanna Lumley visits June at home in Wimbledon to re-live some of her finest comedy moments.
She also explores how the entertainment industry has changed – most notably the expanded roles for women as performers, writers and producers – during her remarkable career.
Radio has been vital to June’s success, but it was TV that brought her to the hearts of millions.
Joanna looks back and listens to June's first footsteps on the path to fame - at first on radio in Take It From Here, then alongside almost every big name comic of the 50s, 60s and 70s, until Terry and June put her name in the title of that most successful of sitcoms.
Joanna Lumley, a co-star with June in Absolutely Fabulous, listens back to some selected gems from the archives and discusses the highs and lows of her time in the entertainment business.

In 1971, actor Richard Burton was invited by Josip Broz Tito, former President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to play him in the partisan film, Battle of Sutjeska (1973).
The film tells the story of the greatest engagement of the Yugoslav Partisan War.
The potential for this relationship between actor and politician, both interested in each other’s roles in life, to become fast friends seemed a surety. Yet, the realities of running a country and being a leading man meant the relationship was doomed from the start.
Through interviews, film archive and extracts from Burton’s diary, Matthew Sweet explores how celebrity and politics, art and power collided on a film set.
With contributions from Professor Chris Williams, Professor Gethin Matthews, Slavko Stimac, filmmaker Mila Turalijic and journalist Jurica Pavicic.

Sugar
Comedian Simon Evans continues his series about the economics of some of the goods - or bads - we are addicted to.
What are the economics, history and health issues behind these oh-so-addictive commodities?
This time it's sugar.
Some people say sugar could be the new tobacco - exposed as a health risk that's been knowingly concealed for decades. And the trouble is sugar is in almost everything now - even things that 'look' savoury.
What part does economics have to play in how we have got to this point? How do we make sense of what the food industry is doing with sugar? And if we want to invest in this addiction, how do we do it?
With the help of economics guru, More Or Less host Tim Harford and the Queen of investment know-how, Merryn Somerset Webb, plus author David Gillespie, Simon walks us around the economics of this very familiar commodity and pokes fun at our relationship with it.
Written by Simon Evans, Benjamin Partridge and Andy Wolton.

And June waxes lyrical about her empathy with comedians.

THU 10:30 Am I Tone Deaf? (b014641m)
If you are 'tone-deaf' can your brain be 're-tuned' by singing lessons? Author and journalist Sathnam Sanghera has spent his life miming to songs. Like one in 15 of us, he believes he is tone deaf. But is he?
In this programme, he braves both scientific testing and singing lessons in the hope of finding his voice. Vocal coach Heather Mair Thomas believes that whatever the diagnosis, she has ways of making him sing. But will doctors who argue that congenital tone deafness cannot be cured by training alone eclipse her optimism?
As Sathnam navigates his way between science and song, he will meet key experts who are dedicated to exploring the scientific highs and lows of tone deafness.
For the past decade, neurologists have developed a number of techniques aimed at identifying the root cause of 'amusia' known more commonly as tone deafness.
If they can understand more about this relatively common condition it will help them to understand more complex neurological disorders that can affect speech or sound perception.
Sathnam will also take on board the 'sound advice' that fellow sufferers have to offer. Retired Reverend Jim Cross was occupationally obliged to lead his church in song, however, his congregation gave him special dispensation to simply say the lines aloud following his diagnosis of 'amusia'.
Producer: Nicola Humphries.

THU 15:00 The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford (m000plwp)
John Dowell (Kyle Stoller) recounts the ‘saddest story ever told’, in which ‘good soldier’ Edward Ashburnham's libido leaves countless lives in ruins.
Sharp, menacing and ultimately deadly, The Good Soldier can be seen as the prototype for the psychosexual drama. In charge of the story is Dowell - the impotent, voyeuristic husband of Florence, whose love affair with Edward ultimately ends in tragedy. But how much can we trust Dowell’s account of events? How does he know such intimate details of his wife’s affair? And who is really responsible for the dramatic tragedies that hang over the story?
In Ford Maddox Ford’s classic novel. John Dowell is the original unreliable narrator in a twisted tale of sex, money and murder.
Adapted by Sebastian Baczkiewicz.
Of The Good Soldier Graham Greene said, 'I don't know how many times in nearly forty years I have come back to this novel'. While Julian Barnes simply described it as 'a masterpiece'.

That said, every true act of reconciliation begins in that narrowest and deepest of places – the human heart. In that place, wars and conflicts begin, and from that place their end draws nigh. Today’s is an act of humble worship, as we bring troubled hearts and less than peaceful minds to God.

Harvest Moon
It's a love song about growing old. Neil Young's Harvest Moon released in 1992 is a nod to the 1970s country rock.
It's loved by music blogger Alyson Young. It's also a grown up song about love says singer-songwriter Ricky Ross.
How do you make the magic last and how do you keep love alive?
People tell their stories about what the song means to them: jazz singer Maureen Washington danced to the song with her late husband.
Amanda Legere played it to her premature baby daughter when she went to see her in the ICU. She knows the baby responded to that song. Mary Divine and her husband were serenaded on their wedding anniversary during lockdown. The whole neighbourhood came out to watch a teenage neighbour play Harvest Moon for them.
Margy Waller drove to work at the White House on the final days of Bill Clinton's Presidency listening to Harvest Moon because she needed to cry. For her it's a song about loss. She is still touched by it today during the pandemic in what she describes as another period of great loss.
Versions of Harvest Moon include those by:
Neil Young
Cassandra Wilson
Maureen Washington
Nils Lofgren
