Allegri's Miserere
Allegri wrote the chord sequence for his Miserere in the 1630s for use in the Sistine Chapel during Holy Week.
It then went through the hands of a 12-year-old Mozart, Mendelssohn and Liszt until it finally reached England in the early 20th century and got fixed into the version we know today.
The soaring soprano line that hits the famous top C and never fails to thrill has become a firm favourite for concert audiences around the world.

SAT 00:30 Let's Go Round Again - The Story of The Magic Roundabout (b06gqh8m)
In October 1965, a new version of the French children's television programme Le Manège Enchanté was shown on the BBC. Scripted and voiced by the Playschool presenter Eric Thompson, and broadcast with its English title - The Magic Roundabout, it soon became a favourite with viewers of all ages. In fact, when its transmission was changed to an earlier time, there were so many complaints from outraged adults that it was moved back to its old slot - just before the six o'clock news!
To celebrate the programme's 60th anniversary, Sophie Thompson, Eric's daughter, and his wife Phyllida Law tell us the stories behind the much-loved series. We'll hear tales of Zebedee, Florence and Ermintrude, and how Dougal the dog nearly caused international relations with France to break down!

With a playful charm and penetrating intelligence, Geoff examines a series of notable endings and considers the intensifications and modifications of experience that come when an ending is within sight. Oh, and there's some stuff, but not too much, about tennis, too.
This book on last things - written while life as we know it seemed to be coming to an end - is also about how to go on living with art and beauty.

Celebrity Traitors
Clare Balding
Sporting broadcaster Clare Balding is castaway by Kirsty Young.
BBC TV's coverage of London's 2012 Olympics was her triumph and much like Team GB, she'd been in training for her big moment for quite a while.
Clare has worked on five Olympic Games, four Paralympics, three Winter Olympics and a great deal of horse racing.
It's on the turf that she's most at home - her father was a champion racehorse trainer, and for a number of years, she herself was a leading amateur flat jockey.
The first pony she ever rode, as a toddler, was a gift from the Queen; she went to public school and Cambridge, but her life hasn't been an entirely easy ride. She has coped with thyroid cancer, being forcibly 'outed' by the tabloid press, and in her own words, being 'a disappointment from the moment' she was born.
She says, 'This may sound nauseating, but I'm a very happy person. I love my work, I love my life, and I'm told by those who know and love me that it's a bit like living with Tigger'.

Canopy
If you walk into a rainforest, you are immediately met by quite literally a forest of trees.
All the tree trunks look like cathedral pillars, smooth and wet from the rain.
Not a single branch emerges from the trunk for tens of metres - and when they do, you see a breathtaking interlocking jungle of branches and leaves, ferns and flowers, and all number of creatures great and small.
The canopy is a bonanza of tropical forest life, in the bright light and gentle breeze - a far cry from the dark and humid underworld of the forest floor.
Not surprising then that Sir David Attenborough knew this would be a perfect place to film wildlife.

Pilot
Katherine Parkinson and Julian Rhind-Tutt star in this 'Comedy Showcase' pilot about an alien invasion of a small English village.
The Geonin are not your typical alien invaders. Instead of the usual all-at-once approach to global domination (which usually fails, they've noticed) they've decided to start small. They've encircled a small English village with an impenetrable heat wave, preventing anything coming in or out.
With Cresdon Green as their base, they will learn about humankind, using their knowledge to effectively and efficiently spread their domination over the rest of the world, bit by bit.
Katrina just came back to borrow some money from her parents. And, having been turned down, she's really in no mood to stick around - but the Geonin are not letting anyone in or out, and she has tickets to the theatre in London.
So what choice does she have but to start The Resistance?
Following this successful pilot - two series were produced with an amended cast.

When a computer finally beat the world's best player of Go, we had a problem. If even the most complex game can be reduced to a mathematical procedure, are games as the embodiment of human desires and abilities doomed?
Not a chance. Board games are booming, and self-confessed board-game geek Samira Ahmed is determined to find out why.
Along the way, she meets the designers, players and everyday obsessives who throng in their thousands to shows like Essen’s famous Spiel festival. She discovers how games mirror the preoccupations of our age and how they allow us to vent our instinctive desire for combat.
But could the real answer to our gaming addiction lie elsewhere? As it turns out, old-fashioned gaming seems to create a safe space like no other, where we can explore sides of our identities forbidden in real life. Samira talks to the man who rediscovered the rules of one of mankind's oldest games.

I Was Billie Holiday's Replacement
Andrew McGibbon analyses great artists at a significant time in their careers, but from the perspective of someone who worked for them, inspired them, employed them or did their job for them while no one was looking.
Annie Ross was a young singer from Scotland who found herself in a bigger spotlight when she was asked by Duke Ellington to stand in for Billie Holiday at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem.
She was petrified, but was well received by the audience. From there, Annie developed an intriguing relationship with Billie and as Billie's career nosedived with substance abuse and bad love, Annie's career as a singer took off as she created a new style of singing with her hit record Twisted.
This is a moving story of japes and heartbreak from a witness and friend of one of the most significant jazz singers of the 20th Century.
Written and presented by Andrew McGibbon.
Produced by Nick Romero.

Rebuilding Britain for the Baby Boomers
Maxwell Hutchinson analyses the great push to re-build post-war Britain.
In the 1990s, architect and broadcaster Maxwell Hutchinson began recording interviews with the men who rebuilt Britain after the Second World War.
These idealists - then in their 80s - told how they'd returned from war to a country ravaged by the Luftwaffe, determined to design a country fit for heroes.
Many were graduates of the left-leaning Architectural Association and brought their radical ideas, influenced by le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, to building:
* Social housing for slum clearance families
* Hospitals for the infant NHS
* Schools for the children of the Butler Education Act
* Bold new tower blocks that would transform the city skyline
Most of them worked for local authorities and saw their profession as a public service. These 'duffle-coated pip-squeaks' as they were known, included Sir Phillip Powell, Sir Andrew Derbyshire, Ivor Smith, Peter Smithson, the father of Brutalism; Lord Esher and Jim Cadbury Brown. Many have since died.
Using these interviews, plus newsreel and contemporary archive, this programme captures that idealism and reflects the later disillusionment when modernism - and architects - fell out of fashion.
2011 was the 50th anniversary of Parkhill Flats, Sheffield. It was seen as the embodiment of the modernist movement - streets in the sky to replace the grim terraces bulldozed after the war to give families indoor lavatories, central heating and airy balconies.
At first, the families couldn't believe their luck - they loved their modern new homes. But as the building began to show cracks and the community spirit failed to translate from slum-terrace to deck access, Parkhill Flats became a by-word for all that was rotten in the state of post-war architecture.
It wasn't long before residents starting chucking their rubbish over the balconies, and the flats became the new slums. Peter Smithson, once blamed the residents of his much-criticised development, Robin Hood Gardens (a sister project to Parkhill) for letting the building go to rack and ruin; for 'painting their doors purple' and not applying 'the minor arts of occupation'.
Parkhill Flats - the largest listed building in Europe - is undergoing extensive renovation by the trendy developers Urban Splash; so the story of this emblematic building, which Sheffielders love and loathe in equal measure, is still a talking point.
Maxwell Hutchinson goes back to Parkhill to see the renovation, talk to former residents and find out if the post-war dream of the young architects who designed this colossal building can be revived.

True Colors
'Your true colors... are beautiful, like a rainbow...'
Billy Steinberg's lyrics were originally inspired by his mother but his songwriting partner Tom Kelly recognised its universal appeal and with a slight rewrite, it became the song that Cyndi Lauper made famous the world over.
Growing up in a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ken Kidd could never truly be himself. Watching Cyndi Lauper perform True Colors on MTV showed him that it was OK to be his authentic self. Years later he describes his pride at watching the Rainbow Flag being raised above the Stonewall National Monument as he and other LGBTQ campaigners sang that same song.
Lesley Pyne learnt to sing 'True Colors' with her local choir. It's a song that resonated with her more than she had ever expected. After six attempts at IVF, Lesley had to come to terms with the knowledge that she wouldn't be able to have children. It wasn't easy. It has taken years of digging deep to work through the grief, but now she helps others to find their true colours and firmly believes that they can be beautiful, like a rainbow.
And in 1999, Caroline Paige, a jet and helicopter navigator in the Royal Air Force, became the first ever openly serving transgender officer in the British military. She rose above the extraordinary challenges placed before her to show her 'True Colors' whilst serving her country on the front line in the war on terror.
