SAT 00:30 Jack Jackson: Rhythm and Radio Fun Remembered (b0169255)
Exploring the legacy of musician and broadcaster Jack Jackson, who died in 1978, through the eyes of three generations of his family.
Kenny Everett said of him 'He was the first person to have fun on radio', but even though he inspired many broadcasters and musicians it is the incredible impact Jackson still has on his family.
This programme uncovers another Jackson dynasty overflowing with musicians, record producers and artists all striving to preserve his memory and make their own impression on the world. His two sons established a recording studio, used by artists such as Elton John, Tom Robinson and Motorhead. His daughter is a successful artist and designer and several of his grandchildren are forging effective careers in the music business - one of which co-founded production group 'Bimbo Jones' which has taken numerous number ones to the top of the dance charts. His great grand children are all encouraged to be musical.
Jackson's career in entertainment spanned fifty years. Jackson formed his band in the thirties and was a regular at London's Dorchester Hotel. He became a disc jockey in 1948 on the BBC Light Programme and his programmes featured a mix of linking his voice with comedy clips and popular music. According to his grandson Marc he was the first broadcaster in Britain to introduce the technique of sampling and to present a "clip show" programme.
He is also often cited as the man who gave the BBC the nickname 'Auntie' and the first voice heard on ITV.

SAT 07:30 Black Gold by Jeremy Paxman (Omnibus) (m002j5fp)
Writer and broadcaster Jeremy Paxman’s vivid and compelling social history of how coal 'made' Britain.
It was Britain's good fortune to be blessed with rich seams of anthracite and the ambition and hard labour of her inhabitants to turn it into the nation's powerhouse. From Roman times to the late 20th century, Paxman explores the stories of the engineers and inventors, landowners, entrepreneurs and industrialists who saw the potential for innovation and wealth. For centuries it was the driving force behind our economy and trade and the preoccupation of politicians. It fuelled the industrial revolution producing everything from carriage wheels to needles, it warmed and lit the nation’s homes and powered our steam trains and ships.
Underpinning all of this and central to Paxman’s book is the history of the miners themselves who toiled in appalling conditions to hack the coal from the underground seams and the mining communities that formed around the pitheads. He also explores the terrible human cost of coal with the filthy, polluting air it produced as it burned and the inevitable and multiple accidents that happened to those working underground.

Bob and Marie
Isy Suttie presents some unique tales, recounting a series of love stories affecting people she's known throughout her life, told partly through song.

In this final episode, Isy returns to Matlock to take driving lessons from instructor Bob, who she learns has a crush on another pupil, the mysterious Marie. While Isy tries to master an impeccable 3 point turn, she attempts to unite Bob with the girl of his dreams and discovers some important lessons in love of her own.
With her multi-character and vocal skills, plus her guitar, Isy creates a hilarious and deeply moving world, sharing with us her lessons in life and love.
Produced by Lianne Coop.

Deaths of the Poets
What is the cost of poetry? The post-Romantic myth of the dissolute drunken poet has fatally skewed the image of poets in our culture. Novelists can be stable, savvy, politically adept and in control, but poets should be melancholic, doomed and self-destructive. Is this just a myth, or is there some essential truth behind it: that great poems only come when a poet's life is pushed right to an emotional knife-edge of acceptability, safety, security?
In this programme, the poets explore the lives - and tragic deaths - of Thomas Chatterton and Dylan Thomas.

Sellers in the Attic
Comedy writer and historian Glenn Mitchell examines rare and lesser-known recordings of Peter Sellers, presenting a deep insight into the life of the comic legend.
After Peter Sellers died in July 1980, the initial rush of glowing eulogies swiftly made way for often highly condemnatory accounts of his personality and behaviour. Some of these are, admittedly, accurate, others take incidents in isolation without regard for context. Other instances are based on inaccuracies and misassumptions.
There was more perspective among subsequent chronicles but the trend continued to portray Sellers's personal life as one with few, if any, redeeming features.
As regards his work, many accounts have concentrated on the obvious aspects - the ‘Panther’ films, ‘Dr Strangelove’ and ‘The Goon Show’ - but Peter Sellers left far more than that.
The writer and presenter of this programme, Glenn Mitchell, collected Sellers material from an early age. In this personal take on the subject, he chronicles Sellers' career in parallel with his own lifelong interest in the actor's work.
The programme, originally made to mark the 30th anniversary of Sellers death, also explores the softer, compassionate side to the actor's nature, the aspect of the man which once led to him talking a complete stranger - who was perched on a high bridge - out of committing suicide.
Among Mitchell’s personal finds is a private recording Sellers made for a television producer whose daughter lost her sight. The recording, not broadcast prior to this documentary, reveals a remarkable and malleable side to his personality, catching him at a very relaxed moment in his life contrasting with his often cited volatile nature.
Mitchell's focus is on the lesser-known Sellers material he has amassed, including home-movie prints, soundtracks, rare interviews and out-takes. The programme also features written archives from his first BBC TV and Radio auditions, and gems like his 1970 performance of the macabre music-hall monologue ‘The Ballad of Sam Hall’, recorded at Wilton's in East London.

Mrs Sidhu’s hunt for the truth about Willie Kendrick's death leads to a tough choice.
Meera Syal stars as the catering sleuth from Slough hunting down a Highland killer.
With Castle Tannoch cut off by snowfall, Mrs Sidhu is - as usual - finding "clues" that give Inspector Burton stress headaches. Pills, a game pie and blood that turns out to be quite something else.
Mrs Sidhu soon has her nose in everyone’s business on the highland estate, but it’s their leisure pursuits that raise her eyebrows. Big Willie Kendrick’s use of the old estate cottage certainly wasn’t for corporate entertainment. And she is sure the maid knows more than she’s letting on.
Meanwhile, Mrs Sidhu's son Tez proposes he needs a gun to protect her. And if that doesn’t fluster her, hunky gamekeeper Callum has her heart fluttering with a proposal of a different kind.
As Mrs Sidhu probes deeper into the death of Willie Kendrick and the secrets of the troubled hunting lodge, she faces a difficult choice between her heart and her head for crime.

Yet, despite the fact we encounter them everywhere we look, very few people have been able to build a fortune on them.
All that's about to change as, Simon enlists help from the experts to help brings us closer to understanding of how global economic forces have a far-reaching and often surprising impact on our lives.

Craig Shields (Justin Brady) is a rich, successful businessman who decides to go back to where it all began - the Workshop in Nottingham that transformed his life - to help similarly disadvantaged kids make something of their own lives.
Two problems - they don't want his help and he's got the wrong keys to unlock their potential.
It stars Line of Duty's Vicky McClure and the extraordinary talents of the BAFTA Award winning Television Workshop.
Craig's altruistic homecoming is not what he envisaged. Support he was relying on from old friends and colleagues doesn't materialise. While Craig would prefer to forget most of his troubled Notts past, there is one person that will always have a place in his heart - his long time ex Sandra (Vicky McClure). A spark that was lit 15 years ago is rekindled with Craig's reappearance in Nottingham.
Over the years the Nottingham Television Workshop has produced This is England, Samantha Morton, Vicky McClure and Jack O'Connell, among many others. Anyone who wants to cast funny, authentic, young, working-class actors goes to the Workshop. Fittingly the show is directed by the person that helped launch the careers of the actors mentioned above and who ran the Workshop for 30 years, Ian Smith.
The show was created by Love In Recovery's Pete Jackson and Mario Stylianides.
It is written by a brand new writer, Ava Pickett.

WED 22:45 Athena's Cancel Culture (m000v8xd)
Episode 3
Athena Kugblenu looks at the history of cancel culture, exploring how celebrity justice may have been meted out back in the day.
Were some historical figures unfairly cancelled?
Over the last few years, if a celebrity has ever said or done anything remotely controversial, then they've probably been cancelled.
Largely performed through social media, some describe it as necessary evil to help democratise the internet and reflect the expectancy of an artist’s audience, for others it’s just a chance to shut up gobby celebs!
Whatever your view, it certainly helps empower fans by diminishing celebrity cultural capital and helping keep their egos and opinions in check. It's a growing phenomenon that's left almost no one unscathed, from comedians and actors to musicians and TV hosts.
It’s also happening to the not so famous - remember the bin cat lady?
With stand up and sketch comedy, Athena explores cancel culture and the world of offence in modern times.
Athena helps to explain the phenomenon of cancel culture among celebrities, look at the history of offence, and offer up some cancel rules for guidance. Athena then puts all that cancel knowledge to the test on her own social media activity from 10 years ago.
There’s just no escape from cancel culture justice, even for Athena!

Henry Normal: A Normal... Community
"Shove up National Treasures. We need to make room for Henry Normal"
Simon O'Hagan - Radio Times
The ninth instalment in this acclaimed, occasional series in which acclaimed, occasional writer Henry Normal uses poetry, stories and comedy to tackle those subjects so big only radio can possibly contain them.
So far Henry has covered ‘Family’, ‘Life’, ‘Love’, ‘Imagination’, ‘Nature’, ‘The Universe’, ‘Communication' and Ageing'; in this new episode, recorded in front of a live audience in his home city of Nottingham, he will be talking about 'Community'.
Henry Normal is a multi-award winning writer, producer and poet. Co-writer of award winning TV programmes such as The Royle Family, The Mrs Merton Show, Coogan’s Run and Paul Calf, and producer of, amongst many others, Oscar-Nominated Philomena, Gavin and Stacey and Alan Partridge.
Praise for previous episodes in this series:
"It's a rare and lovely thing: half an hour of radio that stops you short, gently demands your attention and then wipes your tears away while you have to have a little sit down"
"It's a real treat to hear a seasoned professional like Henry taking command of this evening comedy spot to deliver a show that's idiosyncratic and effortlessly funny"
"Not heard anything that jumps from hilarious to moving in such an intelligent, subtle way as Henry Normal's show"

Chi-chi Nwanoku on Jessye Norman
Musician Chi-chi Nwanoku chooses the American singer Jessye Norman, a global opera superstar.
On the 11th June 1988 Jessye Norman performed a spine-tingling rendition of 'Amazing Grace' to a packed Wembley Stadium, bringing to a close a concert marking the seventieth birthday of Nelson Mandela. By this point in her career Jessye Norman was a global icon of opera, best-known for her performances in works by Wagner, Verdi and Mozart. She refused to take the parts traditionally offered to Black singers and once said that pigeonholes were only for pigeons. She would sing, in fact, whatever she liked.
Double-bassist and founder of the Chineke! Orchestra Chi-chi Nwanoku was driving back from a concert when she first heard Jessye Norman singing on the radio. She remembers being so struck by her voice that she had to pull over and wait until the performance had finished before continuing her journey. Chi-chi and presenter Matthew Parris explore some of Jessye Norman's work and recordings, and her views on what it means to be a Black woman in classical music.
Chi-chi and Matthew are joined by Kira Thurman, Associate Professor of Musicology at the University of Michigan to help map out the key moments and decisions in Jessye Norman's extraordinary life.

THU 10:30 When Yorkshire Played New York (b08y198z)
Cricket was once the most popular sport played in America. To begin this story, Geoff Boycott and veteran New York cricketer Clarence Modeste recall an extraordinary attempt to revive cricket with the Yorkshire county team playing at Staten Island Cricket Club in the midst of social unrest during 1964.
At that time, America was a turbulent place following the assassination of President Kennedy. The Civil Rights movement was under attack and there was rioting in the streets.
As The Beatles took to the stage of the Paramount Theatre in New York for their US debut, across town the Brylcreem boys of Yorkshire were beginning their attempt to bring cricket back to the USA. Gamesmanship, partying, and psychological warfare are recounted here by some of the survivors.
In the 1800s, before the American Civil War, cricket was the dominant sport in America. Presenter and cricket fanatic David Prest visits the home of US cricket in Haverford, Philadelphia, to hear about the social history of the game and how it's surviving now - largely organised and played along ethnic team lines. The award winning-author Joseph O’Neill recounts the origins of his bestselling novel about cricket in the USA, Netherland, and describes how the police organise cricket facilities in New York for young Muslim players in poorer areas in an attempt to keep them from becoming isolated and succumbing to extremist ideology.
By contrast, we also visit the exclusive surroundings of Merrion Cricket Club in Haverford, Philadelphia, where millionaires take tea on the pavilion.
Finally, the programme asks if America could ever become a cricketing nation once again.

Sacred Expressions: The Arts in Worship
In this week-long series of Daily Services, different voices reflect on how the arts - music, painting, sculpture, and more - can deepen our spiritual lives. Each day, a different piece of art will be introduced, with the speaker sharing how it has shaped their faith, inspired their ministry, or opened new understandings of the divine. Through scripture, story, and sacred art, they explore the ways God speaks to us not just in words, but in colour, sound, and form.

Jerusalem
"Jerusalem" has become a quintessentially middle-class and very English song, but it is held in the hearts and memories of people from different backgrounds and cultures.
There is a bit of cricket - commentator Jonathan Agnew (Aggers) discusses England's stunning and unexpected victory in the 2005 Ashes. Jerusalem reminds him of that extraordinary summer.
Pamela Davenport is the daughter of a man who felt that the words of Jerusalem highlighted inequality in society; lack of money prevented him fulfilling his academic potential and he died in a care home that didn't care well enough for him.
For American poet, Ann Lauterbach, the unusual and little-known Paul Robeson version was the theme-tune to her escape from the difficult years of Nixon and Vietnam to 1960s London.
Singer, Janet Shell, recalls the burial of her Great Uncle who was killed during World War One, but whose body was only discovered in 2009.
Susanne Sklar - a scholar of William Blake - discusses the inspiration behind the words of the poem. Probably, she says, he wrote them while awaiting his trial for sedition; he was in trouble for fighting with a soldier who had urinated in his garden.
Composer and writer, Paul Spicer, plays, sings and talks through the tune which was composed by Sir Hubert Parry.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2016.
FRI 10:30 The Concrete and the Divine (b01rqnf3)
Under the umbrella of Glasgow architects Gillespie Kidd & Coia, Isi Metzstein and Andrew MacMillan seized on the momentary experimentalism of the Catholic Church after World War II to revolutionise church design.
This was a brave new world and the Catholic Church wanted their places of worship to meet the needs of a new era.
In a culture never quite comfortable with the high modern influences of Europe and America, Metzstein and MacMillan drew on the ideas of Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright with unparalleled freedom.
Their masterpiece was St Peter's Seminary at Cardross, which stood out like a spaceship in the modest construction yards of British architecture. It's a ghost space now, abandoned in 1980 just 14 years after completion.
While most of their churches are still in use, their Modernist design and location means they stand like monuments to a very different time; a time when Catholicism in Scotland was expected to spread its wings.
Jonathan Glancey explores Scotland's physical and spiritual landscape to discover more about the extraordinary lives of two of Britain's most talented architects.
Producer: Caitlin Smith
