SAT 00:30 Eagle: The Space Age Weekly (b00wqdx6)
Sir Tim Rice explores the lasting appeal of British magazine Eagle and the impact of its flagship character Dan Dare.
Eagle ran in two main incarnations between 1950 and 1994. Dan Dare, often referred to as "Biggles in space", is regarded in some circles as the greatest British science fiction hero of the 20th century
In this feature we chart the influences behind the comic, and explore the life of its creator Marcus Morris, a fascinating man who began the publication because of his concern over 'horrific' US comics which presented 'disturbing' storylines which he felt 'corrupted British youth'.
The programme reveals how Dan Dare was originally envisaged as a space chaplain before becoming the popular astronaut. It also examines the work of illustrator Frank Hampson who introduced technology years ahead of its time. Hampson knew the Space Age was on its way while serving in the Second World War and seeing the German VI rockets. He made the Dan Dare strips as realistic as possible by dressing his team in spacesuits and uniforms, basing the look of the fictional characters on his colleagues.
We reveal how the stories had educational value and, along with Dan Dare, we look at other Eagle offerings including Shakespeare's plays and the Greek myths which ran as comic strips.
Featuring contributions from author Philip Pullman, Sally Morris the daughter of Eagle Creator Marcus and Eagle Society member David Britton.
Producer: Stephen Garner
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2010.

The Power of Life And Death
5. A Death for a Death
When a number of distinguished members of government committees are found dead in suspicious circumstances, it falls to DCI Kate Duncan to discover what the connecting factor is.
The revelation that two elderly women were killed by experimental drugs that had not been prescribed to them led initial suspicion to fall on their GP, Dr Tom Cready. But - following the suspected murder of a cancer specialist at the local hospital - DCI Kate Duncan now believes that all three victims died because they were involved in decisions to refuse the use of expensive new treatments in the NHS.
Mark Lawson's deftly plotted murder-mystery gets to grips with a major concern at the heart of our cash-strapped NHS: the post code lottery and exactly who is to be considered deserving of the most expensive life saving drugs on the market.

SAT 06:00 The Real George Orwell (b01q7fzf)
Animal Farm
George Orwell described his short novel as a fairy story, but it’s a satire on the Soviet Communist system.
But 'Animal Farm' still reads as a powerful warning despite all the changes in world politics since it was first published in 1945.
Of course, there is no real George Orwell - it was the pen name of Eric Blair - a writer and political commentator.
Ever since his early death in 1950, he has been the darling of some on both the left and the right of British politics - whilst being reviled by others.
For all the beautiful simplicity of his writing and storytelling Orwell/Blair is a contradictory figure - an anti-establishment, pro-English, ex-Etonian ex-policeman and socialist, who was ardently anti-authoritarian. He was as anti-fascist as he was anti-communist, a former Spanish Civil War soldier who was anti-war but pro the Second World War.
The author dramatised his own novel
One night, on an English farm, Major the boar recounts his vision of an utopia where his fellow creatures own the land along with the means of production and are no longer the slaves of humans.
Before long, his dream comes true and for a short while all animals really are equal. But the clever pigs educate themselves and soon learn how to extend their own power, inevitably at the expense of the rest of the community.

SAT 07:30 The Surreal Life of Leonora Carrington by Joanna Moorhead (Omnibus) (b08tj37y)
Leonora Carrington, born in 1917, was the last surviving member of the Surrealist movement of the 1930s.
A prodigious painter and writer, she was caught up in some of the most exciting - and most terrible - events of the 20th century.
Joanna Moorhead tells the remarkable life story of her father's cousin.
Omnibus in five parts abridged by Sara Davies.
Read by Juliet Stevenson.
Introduced by Joanna Moorhead.
Aged 17, Leonora Carrington rejected her upper class English upbringing and her family, in favour of the bohemian life of an artist, first in London and then Paris. She became the lover and muse of Max Ernst, and friend of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and many other creative geniuses.
Soon after the outbreak of the war however, she suffered a mental breakdown and ended up in an asylum in Madrid. She eventually escaped war-torn Europe by marrying a Mexican, which enabled her passage to New York, and from there she journeyed to Mexico where she lived out the rest of her life.
Mexico is where Joanna Moorhead went to find Leonora in 2006. During Joanna's childhood, all she knew was that her father's cousin had been a wild child who had caused the family no end of trouble and "simply flounced off into the sunset". But this first visit of many was the start of a life-changing friendship. During days of talking and reading, of drinking tea and tequila, of going for walks and eating in local restaurants Leonora told Joanna her amazing life story.
This book is the story of Leonora Carrington's life, and of the relationship between two women. And it's about Surrealism as Leonora lived it - a way of approaching the world in a spirit of constant curiosity, with the desire to work out, if not the answers, then at least some of the questions.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the impressionist and satirist Rory Bremner. He was born in Edinburgh in 1961. A self-confessed show-off, he started doing impersonations at primary school, sending up teachers, sports commentators and Moira Anderson! Entertaining his school friends inevitably developed into performing on stage and he worked as a stand up on the comedy circuit, and notably at the Edinburgh Festival.
The BBC offered him his first television series, Now Something Else. It ran on BBC2 for seven years. In 1993 he moved to Channel 4, where his show Rory Bremner - Who Else? developed a more hard-edged, satirical and political bite. Rory was also a regular on Spitting Image and Mock the Week.
An opera lover with an academic side to him, Rory has translated three operatic works into English. In more recent years, Rory has been on Strictly, Who Do You Think You Are? The Imitation Game - not forgetting I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

Between the Ears - Songs of the Mojave Desert
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Between the Ears - Songs of the Mojave Desert with celebrated Mojave American poet Natalie Diaz. And Daljit reads a poem from his Poetry Extra Book of the Month: Unstill Landscapes by Becca Drake.
Natalie Diaz's award-winning poetry collection, When My Brother Was An Aztec, draws on her experiences growing up on the Fort Mojave Indian reservation, a 40,000 acre stretch of desert spanning California, Arizona and Nevada.
Natalie brings us to Mojave Valley, to the home of her uncle Hubert McCord. At 91, Hubert is the last fluent Mojave speaker who is also a singer. Together they have been working on a language recovery program for young people, whilst also recording ancient bird and clan songs for future generations.
Mojaves call themselves Aha’Macav - which means the river runs through their bodies and through their land. Today this is the most endangered river in the United States.
Despite brutal attempts to silence Mojave language and culture in the 20th century, Mojave ancient songs, with their stories of animals, the river, and ancient beings, still resonate with life today on the reservation. Although many traditions are at risk of dying out.

MON 10:00 Frankly Speaking (b055q3p1)
Maurice Chevalier
French entertainer Maurice Chevalier is interviewed about his life and career by Penelope Mortimer, Colin MacInnes and Carl Wildman.
Sadly the full programme from 1963 no longer exists, but this is a long extract. Then in his 70s, he speaks openly about how much he owes to English vaudeville and music hall. Chevalier reveals his use of the then new-fangled stage microphone, touches on his working class roots, his adored mother and two bouts of depression. He's also questioned about his stage persona as the sophisticated, romantic, Frenchman versus the real Chevalier.
Launched in 1952 on the BBC Home Service, Frankly Speaking was a novel, groundbreaking series. Unrehearsed and unscripted, the traditional interviewee/interviewer pairing was initially jettisoned for three interviewers firing direct questions - straight to the point.
Early critics described it as 'unkempt', 'an inquisition' and described the guest as prey being cornered, quarry being pursued - with calls to axe the unscripted interview. But the format won out and eventually won over its detractors.
Unknown or very inexperienced broadcasters were employed as interviewers, notably John Freeman, John Betjeman, Malcolm Muggeridge, Harold Hobson, Penelope Mortimer, Elizabeth Beresford and Katherine Whitehorn.
Only about 40 of the original 100 programmes survive.
First broadcast on the BBC Home Service in 1963.

MON 10:30 Costume Drama: The Wonderful World of Cosplay (p054mh48)
Yasmeen Khan meets the people who put on the costumes, make-up and prosthetics of their favourite TV and film characters, to gather together in venues for cosplay and costuming.
Many of these events, or Comic Cons, are huge with thousands of people flocking to mingle with each other and with some of the film and television stars who turn up to sign autographs, pose for photographs and top up their incomes.
But what do the so-called cosplayers get out of this? Costumes can be time-consuming and expensive, particularly as many cosplayers take pride in being as authentic as possible. Cosplay is expensive and time-consuming but cosplayers maintain that the costume world has changed their lives for the good.
Yasmeen follows Star Wars cosplayer Beth Gourlay as she and her eight-year-old son Alexander son get ready for Digi-Con in Doncaster. We also meet Kerry, who is dressed as Ursula the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid, Julian - a perfectly terrifying Darth Vader, and many others.

About Intelligence
Nathan Caton illustrates what can happen when you try to prove to your family how clever you are.
A mix of stand-up and re-enacted family life - written by Nathan Caton and James Kettle
Young, up-and-coming comedian Nathan Caton, who after becoming the first in his family to graduate from University, opted not to use his architecture degree but instead to try his hand at being a full-time stand-up comedian, much to his family's horror and disgust. They desperately want him to get a 'proper job.'
Janet a.k.a. Mum is probably the kindest and most lenient of the disappointed family members. At the end of the day she just wants the best for her son. However, she'd also love to brag and show her son off to her friends, but with Nathan only telling jokes for a living that's kind of hard to do.
Martin a.k.a. Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son getting a degree so the two of them could work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window. Martin is clumsy and hard-headed and leaves running the house to his wife (she wouldn't allow it to be any other way).
Shirley a.k.a. Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She can't believe she left the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing UK for a better life so that years later her grandson could 'tell jokes!' How can her grandson go on stage and use foul language and filthy material... it's not the good Christian way!
So with all this going on in the household what will Nathan do? Will he persevere and follow his dreams? Or will he give in to his family's interference? Or will he finally leave home?!

TUE 10:30 Toynbee At War (b098h70m)
Polly Toynbee examines how war profoundly informed the vision of her grandfather, the renowned historian Arnold J Toynbee.
His generation were slaughtered on the Flanders fields but Toynbee's life took him on a different path. 'History is as melancholy as war itself' wrote Toynbee as he rose to become one of the 20th century's most popular historians & public intellectual. Yet real loss, from the fallout of war & troubled peace, began to inexorably shape his understanding, and writing, of history classics texts such as his vast, multi-volume best-seller A Study of History are rooted in his life and work from the outbreak of the Great War to the rise of fascism.
Haunted by the idea that he outlived so many of his generation who fell in battle, Toynbee became an important part in the Great War propaganda machine, an eyewitness to the fraught Peace Conference at Versailles & a war journalist in the troubled peace that followed. He would become a central figure in the new discipline of international relations and the founding of Chatham House as he rose to become a public intellectual. But as war loomed yet again, and after a personal audience with Hitler, Toynbee could not escape the shadow of human helplessness in the face of traumatic events surrounding him both professionally and privately. 'One is like a beetle under a steamroller' he wrote.
Many of today's leading historians dismiss Toynbee's great 10 volume work as deeply flawed & riddled with mysticism and few now understand the events that deeply shaped his life. Polly Toynbee explores the events that haunted and shaped his work & life.

Series 1
Land
How do you make economics funny? How do you put the comedy in commodity?
Simon Evans has the answer in this series which asks us to get involved in investment.
Uncowed by an apparently complicated and overwhelming system, Simon focuses on four commodities so intrinsic to our lives they have an almost elemental significance - land, gold, oil and grain.
Yet, despite us encountering them everywhere we look, very few people have been able to build a fortune on them. But that's set to change as, Simon enlists help from the experts - Tim Harford, Merryn Somerset Webb and a guest specialist as they examine the chequered social and economic histories of these commodities.
By looking at four such fundamental products, Simon brings us to a closer understanding of how global economic forces have a far-reaching and often surprising impact on our lives.
In this first episode, Simon looks at Land. How did it come to be traded, why we think bricks and mortar are a safe investment and who really owns the land we buy?
Performed by Simon Evans, with regular guests Tim Harford and Merryn Somerset-Webb, and Land expert Kevin Cahill
Written by Simon Evans with Benjamin Partridge, Guy Venables and Andy Wolton.

WED 22:50 Athena's Cancel Culture (m000tsld)
Episode 1
Over the last few years, if a celebrity has ever said or done anything remotely controversial, then they've probably been cancelled.
Largely performed through social media, some describe it as necessary evil to help democratise the internet and reflect the expectancy of an artist’s audience, for others it’s just a chance to shut up gobby celebs!
Whatever your view, it certainly helps empower fans by diminishing celebrity cultural capital and helping keep their egos and opinions in check. It's a growing phenomenon that's left almost no one unscathed, from comedians and actors to musicians and TV hosts.
It’s also happening to the not so famous - remember the cat bin lady?
With stand up and sketch comedy, Athena explores cancel culture and the world of offence in modern times.
Over four episodes, Athena will help explain the phenomenon of cancel culture among celebrities, look at the history of offence, and offer up some cancel rules for guidance. Athena then puts all that cancel knowledge to the test on her own social media activity from 10 years ago.
There’s just no escape from cancel culture justice, even for Athena!

But the mother and father divorced nine years ago and he'd re-married, so relationships between them all have been strained.
Things come to a head at any mention of the French Oak gable table that Ros and her now dead ex bought together in Camden. This has somehow ended up in the step-mother's house, much to Ros's annoyance:

The renewed bonding Ros is hoping for may be a bit bumpier than expected. Especially when along the way Ros also manages to offend pretty much everyone she meets - not least an Eastern European camp site warden.

The Road and the Miles to Dundee by Val McDermid
Famous writer Stella has always been haunted by the song her dad used to sing at family gatherings, The Road and the Miles to Dundee. Coming out of a bad break up, and in tears from hearing that song again, Stella meets Jen, a new writer, headed for the same literary festival.
They hit it off at once. Stella becomes tempted to break her own long-standing rules but that damn song just keeps getting in the way.
With flashbacks to her formative experiences, and family songs and renditions that she cherishes and loathes in equal measure, Stella enables Jen to see the woman behind the famous novelist. Stella however, is expert at shooting herself in the foot, and meeting Jen is no exception.
The two women have very different visions of what should happen next, but whose vision will prevail?

Sweet Thing
Sweet Thing by Van Morrison has an atmosphere full of tenderness, wonder and joy. But underneath this there a feeling of transience, a melancholy sense of things coming to an end, and of inevitable change. It was written for his 1968 album Astral Weeks, at a time when the Northern Irish born Van had left his home country and was down-and-out in Boston, USA. We hear how the track has come to mean so much to so many.
Caroline Mellor from Brighton remembers an intense moment of hearing Sweet Thing whilst staying in the mountains of Andalucía, Spain.
Sammy Douglas, Councillor and current High Sheriff of Belfast, reflects on memories of the Troubles and how the song intertwines with the tale of his first love.
Ryan H. Walsh, Bostonian and author of Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968, explains how the seminal album Astral Weeks came about, and John Payne, flautist on Sweet Thing, shares memories of those extraordinary recording sessions with Van Morrison.
And singer-songwriter Alanna Joy from South Africa considers why she opens her live sets with her own rendition of Sweet Thing, and recalls hearing it for the first time through Jeff Buckley's cover.

FRI 10:30 When Van Played Cyprus Avenue (b06d2g8z)
"And I'm caught one more time
Up on Cyprus Avenue..."
Van Morrison made a number of references in his songs to the east Belfast neighbourhood in which he grew up - none more directly than in Cyprus Avenue from his 1968 album Astral Weeks.
Romantic images of leaves shaking on a tree, rainbow ribbons in a young girl's hair and a mansion on the hill evoke memories of Cyprus Avenue in the years before Van left Northern Ireland to pursue his career in the USA.
Cyprus Avenue - with its intricate arrangement of flute, harpsichord and strings - was recorded in New York, far from the well-heeled, tree-lined avenue along which the young Van would pass on his way home to the working class area of Hyndford Street. This was in the years before the Troubles. East Belfast was steadfastly loyalist and protestant.
When the arts broadcaster Marie-Louise Muir moved into the area, she was already aware of the iconic quality of street's name - not just from Van Morrison's song, but from the fact that the Reverend Ian Paisley lived on Cyprus Avenue. Marie-Louise was a Catholic ‘blow-in’. So, when Van announced that he'd be celebrating his 70th birthday by playing a gig literally feet from her front door, she was curious to see how the community would respond.

Episode 1
David Jason stars alongside John Bird, Jan Ravens and Rory Bremner in David Renwick’s dark and quirky comedy sketch show that takes a not-altogether-factual look at the history of comedy….
What comedy sketches would you most want at your side to face the end of the world?
In the opening episode, interviewer JP Doom interviews Frankie “Flesh Eater” Harris about a life at the top of the Most Wanted list, and discusses what sketch-based chuckles he would choose to lighten his heart if he found himself stranded in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
And there are clips from spurious comedy greats such as Mace and Dixon’s “the Fiancée of Frankenstein” sketch; the ultimate Mastermind parody from Jenkin Spleen and Helena Handcart; and the fast-talking lunacy of the Klutz Brothers' classic “A Day at the Proctologists”.
With:
David Jason
John Bird
Jan Ravens
Rory Bremner
Producer: Gareth Edwards
