Martina Navratilova
Legendary tennis player, Martina Navratilova is castaway by Kirsty Young.
In an extraordinary career, she's won 59 Grand Slam titles - her last, just a few weeks short of her 50th birthday.
Martina's life off the court has been equally eventful - she grew up in communist Czechoslovakia and, as a teenager, threw rocks as Soviet tanks rolled in; tennis offered a way to see the world and she defected to the US when she was 18 years old.
After 30 years at the top of her profession she retired - and says she finally found time for the rest of her life:
"Tennis really was a total commitment, you didn't have much time for anything else. So, when I quit, I was going through something emotionally that most people go through when they're 18, 20 years old. Really having the time for personal relationships, developing friendships and taking the time with everybody. I think I've caught up by now."

Conversations on a Bench: Shetland - Jen Hadfield
Poet Daljit Nagra selects Conversations on a Bench: Shetland - Jen Hadfield.
Anna Scott-Brown sits on a bench in Hamnovoe on the Island of Burra in Shetland - and hears more stories from the people who stop to sit beside her.
Throughout the programme, a specially commissioned work by the poet Jen Hadfield draws on the voices of those passing by – and sometimes pausing on – the bench opposite a small west-facing harbour.
The poem speaks in the voices of the landscape and the words of the contributors, reflecting on geology, time and the Island community.
The edges between the land and the sea and the sea and the sky becomes a theme, as does how living on an island changes your perspective on community, the sea and your place in the world.
We hear snatches of dialect and how it was once considered rude, and even unlucky, to speak dialect in a public space, as well as folklore and stories.
The rich variety of voices melds those born and living on Shetland with people who have arrived for many different reasons – including one Polish lady exiled in 1981 when martial rule was imposed in Poland. She finds a similarity between being cut off from her homeland and living on a small island in bad weather.
Hidden lives are revealed and common threads recur as Anna’s gentle but insistent questions elicit poignant and profound responses from those sitting on the bench.
Produced by Adam Fowler and Anna Scott-Brown
An Overtone production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in 2019.
**** Daljit also reads from his Poetry Extra Book of the Month for July:
The Face in the Well - the third collection by Suffolk poet Rebecca Watts.

Migraine is ranked globally, by the World Health Organisation, as the seventh most disabling disease - responsible for 2.9% of all years of life lost to disability/YLDs - and the leading cause of disability among all neurological disorders.
AL Kennedy says, "I find migraines fascinating. As a sufferer, they’re hard to explain to non migraineurs.
They aren’t 'just a headache' and can even present as partial blindness. My first migraine was just that – a patch of total blindness in my left field of vision, which I was too shy to mention. Having compared notes, I find I’m not the only one to have had such an experience in adolescence.
"Then came the auras, the pain, the disorientation, tingling, the trouble finding the right words for things, the misdiagnosis as a stroke. Some migraineurs are rushed to hospital with doctors suspecting serious strokes or brain tumours."
She looks at art made by migraineurs aged 7 to 70 and hears vivid accounts of the debilitating experience from a handful of sufferers.

* Britain's leading headache experts - Peter Goadsby & Mark Weatherall
* Child specialist, Prab Pabhakar from Great Ormond Street Hospital

TUE 10:30 Jenny Eclair is Listless Today (b092cnpq)
Comedian and writer Jenny Eclair throws away her To Do list.
She wants to understand why women write so many lists and what life would be like without them.
Jenny discovers there are to-do lists, to-buy lists, to take-back lists, holiday lists and even secret lists of hidden yearnings.
Jenny is in awe of good friend and producer Judith Holder who has a small library of books, each with a different list inside.
Going to her local butcher's - listless - Jenny finds out that men who shop there keep their lists on a mobile phone - but did they write them?
Artist Alice Instone made an exhibition of lists called The Pram in the Hall.
She wrote to successful women and asked for their lists - and was amazed at how much these women had to do. Alice tells Jenny she was particularly interested in the lists because they're one of the rare things people still hand write.
Jenny also talks to Gena-mour Barrett - who writes articles online made up of lists - about why they are so compelling as she reveals her most successful ever list.
Jenny finally returns to her lists but not without first consulting coach Juliet Landau-Pope about what the perfect list would look like.
And she discovers a whole new world of lists just waiting to be completed.

THU 09:00 Ashley Blaker's Hyperfixations (m002fwqy)
3. Orthodox Judaism
"My first skullcap genuinely had a red Liver Bird knitted into it. And interestingly, having been worried about the reaction I might get walking around as a very visible Jew, it turned out I received far more abuse for supporting Liverpool than I ever did for being Jewish."
Ashley has never done anything by halves - so when his interest was piqued in traditional orthodox Judaism his (then undiagnosed) autism and ADHD meant he really dug in - making him, at the time, the UK's only strictly orthodox comedian, with all the complexities and regulations that carried with it.
His diagnosis went some considerable way to explain is his propensity for hyperfixation in special interests, which he now realises entirely shaped his past and which he uses to mine comedy for this new series.
It’s no exaggeration to say Ashley’s life has been driven by obsessions. He has variously been a schoolboy with a love of Star Wars and Doctor Who, a wannabe comedian who performed on the London comedy circuit at 16, a trivia nerd who appeared on University Challenge, a history PhD candidate at Cambridge, a BBC producer of hit comedy shows including Little Britain, a fanatical football fan who saw Liverpool play across England and Europe, a strictly Orthodox Jew who went to synagogue three times a day for over ten years, a father of six, and latterly, a heavily tattooed renegade in hiding from his former community.
In this series, Ashley takes a comedic look at each of his obsessions in turn, merging personal memoir with a delve into subjects which have yet to be covered in stand-up comedy shows. The result is a series which, while based on the broader topic of neurodiversity, covers it with the lightest of touches and is focused more on Ashley’s individual hyperfixations, lifting the lid on many of the different worlds he’s inhabited.

THU 10:30 The Doppler Effect with Charles Hazlewood (b090xv6w)
Conductor Charles Hazlewood and Dr Brian May of Queen celebrate the audio Doppler effect - with a brass and train!
The Doppler effect not only proved that the universe was expanding, it also helped John Lennon sound like the Dalai Lama on a mountaintop - or so he hoped.
Just what is the story behind the Doppler Effect and what does it have to do with music?
BBC Radio 4 turns the volume up to 11, as conductor Charles Hazlewood recreates an ambitious experiment which first proved the Doppler Effect in 1845, while Dr Brian May, guitarist with rock band Queen gives him the low-down on the Doppler Shift in astrophysics.
A steam train, a brass band and an internationally famous conductor recreate one of the most unusual experiments - to prove the existence of the Doppler Effect – what could possibly go wrong?
So what is the Doppler Effect? Everyone today is aware of it, even if they can't name it. The pitch of the siren on a passing police car appears to change as it zooms past - the note appearing to rise and fall as the source of the sound approaches and fades away.
Austrian physicist Christian Doppler, who first proposed his theory in 1842, was interested in the behaviour of light waves, but because sound waves are similar - if longer - the way the theory was tested was using a steam train loaded up with trumpet players holding a single note, travelling at speed past a station.
What a sight - and a sound - it must have been. And now you need imagine it no longer, as conductor Charles Hazlewood attempts to re-create this extraordinary experiment for BBC Radio 4.
With the help of the locomotive steam power of the Great Central Railway and the wind power of the Hathern Brass Band, Charles fills a railway carriage with brass players and sends them from Loughborough, through Quorn Station, blasting out a single note, to recreate that moment.
Gavin Pretor-Pinney, author of “The Wave Watcher’s Companion” helps Hazelwood get to grips with the physics and pit falls behind the original experiment.
Dr Brian May talks of his own close understanding of the Doppler Shift in his study of astrophysics, and how the theory helps us understand the universe.
And, from the Beatles to Booker T and the MG’s, composer and creator of musical instruments Sarah Angliss, demonstrates the beauty of the Leslie Speaker and Hammond Organ, which make the most of the phenomenon.
Music in the programme:
* The Smiths - How Soon Is Now
* Kraftwerk - Autobahn
* The Hathern Band - Death or Glory
* Queen - White Queen
* Jimmy McGriff - Discotheque
* Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing
* The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows

Into My Arms by Nick Cave
"I don't believe in an interventionist God" has to be one of the most original opening lines to a song.
It's one that resonates with the people in this programme who take comfort from Nick Cave's love song.
Els from Belgium was introduced to Cave's music through her partner Guido and Into My Arms became their song. After Guido died in a road accident Els carried on going to concerts and took great comfort from hearing that song. When she later wrote to Nick Cave's blog The Red Hand Files to tell him her story about Into My Arms she was overwhelmed when Nick Cave responded.
The Reverend John Walker feels a strong connection to the song as it's one his musician son Jonny performed just for him one evening on a rainy street in Leeds City Centre as Jonny was about to pack up and leave his busking spot. That special father-son moment has become even more cherished since Jonny's untimely death in 2018.
Many different artists have recorded their versions of Into My Arms including the Norwegian singer Ane Brun who performed it as a way of dealing with the heartache of a lost relationship.
