Series 14
Brothers in Arms
An exploration into the enduring appeal of the Dire Straits classic, Brothers in Arms.
Although thought to have been written by Mark Knopfler in response to the Falklands war in the mid 1980's, it's a piece that people now associate with many other conflicts; military, personal and social.
Bass player, John Illsley explains why it remains such a special piece for Dire Straits.
Marines chaplain, Nigel Beardsley, recalls the important part it's played in the lives of so many soldiers in Iran and Afghanistan and why it's now often heard at military funerals.
Irish playwright, Sam Millar describes why he based a very personal play around the song.
Snuffy Walden, music director of the hit American TV show, The West Wing, talks about how the series writer, Aaron Sorkin insisted on it being used in its entirety during a crucial episode.
Professor Alan Moore of Surrey University explains how it's Knopfler's brilliant use of harmony that gives the song the sense of yearning that has made it into one of the most enduring pop songs of the last century.
Series exploring famous pieces of music and their emotional appeal.

Tony Adams
Footballer Tony Adams is castaway by Kirsty Young.
Tony is one of the few people who know at first hand the pressures and joys of captaining the England team. And, after signing as a schoolboy for Arsenal, he is the only man ever to have led a championship winning team across three decades.
The drama and successes of his life have been as remarkable off the pitch as on it.
He found sporting glory despite being an alcoholic and even served time in prison for drink-driving. But his journey of recovery has been a remarkable one.
Tony went back to studying, developed a love of literature and the arts and put his own money into a charity to support other sports men and women recovering from addiction. It's a transformation that his former team-mates have described as 'heroic'.
Now, he is heading to Azerbaijan to become a manager, he is planning, he says, to build the Tony Adams team.

Imagiste
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Imagiste.
This features the rich legacy of female poets before the First World War.
Jean Sprackland explores the subversive beauty of the female Imagist poets, such as HD and Amy Lowell, whose work changed the direction of poetry in the years just before the war.
They sought crystalline precision - a pared down presentation of the thing itself and a desire to use the poem not to record a moment, but to be that moment.
Jean talks to fellow poets Fiona Benson, Nisha Ramayya and Mona Arshi, who've all been inspired by the original Imagistes.
She also meets researchers Richard Vytniorgu, Exeter University and Melissa Bradshaw, Loyola University in Chicago, and discovers an enduring and rich legacy.

Another of Angela Carter's iconic collection of fairy stories - dramatised by Olivia Hetreed.
Beauty …. Hannah Genesius
Valet …. Jonathan Tafler
Father …. Ariyon Bakare
Clockwork Doll …. Jasmine Jones
At the time of writing The Bloody Chamber in the late 1970s, Angela Carter was disaffected by both sides of the feminist debate. She re-worked traditional fairy tales from her own unique, literary outsider’s point of view, putting women at the centre of the stories.
With their feisty heroines and orgiastic mash-up of beasts, shape-shifters and ghouls, Carter’s extraordinary tales are the most perfect example of her style, not just for her incomparable prose, but also in the dizzying twists and turns of perception, fantasy and myth.
Controversially influenced by De Sade, she embraced the erotic, explored our deepest and darkest urges, and subverted the roles of hunter and prey, master and mistress so that, instead of male sexuality, it is the female that becomes transgressive and powerful.

Making Plans
Talk turns to weddings. What’s it like to go to a wedding as a recovering alcoholic? As usual, the answers are far from simple and the experiences of the group couldn’t be more different.
Continuing the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous, written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery.
It follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Taking place entirely at their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and - most importantly - tell their stories.
Fiona….. Rebecca Front
Simon….. John Hannah
Julie….. Sue Johnston
Danno….. Paul Kaye
Andy..... Johnny Vegas
Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.
Written and created by Pete Jackson.

Then the police job cuts loom and suddenly the way forward doesn't look quite as clear. Helen's dad, Richard, thinks his daughter married beneath her. All Change
After treatment for Ovarian and breast cancer Chippy, is mad Jill is sad and Terri is definitely dangerous to know!
The road back after cancer treatment can be tricky and full of obstacles. In Bad Salsa, two middle aged women and their younger friend seek to regain their zest for life and love by learning to dance at Bad Salsa, the club where everyone knows your name but no-one knows your prognosis!
Depictions of people with cancer on TV and radio too often follow a standard format; there is the diagnosis, the depression the chemo, then the false recovery followed by the tragic death.
Written by Kay Stonham, Bad Salsa tries to paint a picture at once more hopeful and more in line with survival rates which have improved immensely over the past 20 years.
For many, 'living with cancer' is now their day to day challenge. Our characters have finished their treatment and are in the process of finding their way back to normal life or at least finding a "new normal." Everyday challenges must go on like boring marriages, distracting crushes, troublesome children, difficult workmates and infuriating parents. But their brush with mortality gives them a new perspective.
So do they preserve their pre-cancer status quo or in Terri's words, to say "sod it all" and "go for it!"
Follow the women as they embrace the world of salsa whilst they adjust to life after cancer.

The Yangtze River Dolphin, the 'Goddess of the Yangtze', was blind, graceful, sociable, and... pink. Is the survival of the natural world and the advance of human progress incompatible?

TUE 10:30 The Pigeon Whistles (b08ynyk5)
The sound of music flying through the air, carried on the tails of pigeons.
“I knew it was a noise maker, but it was the only thing in the museum that I had no idea what it might sound like. Because it works in a way no other instrument does. No other instrument physically moves around you in space, flying overhead, and that seemed like magic”.
Inspired by the Chinese pigeon whistles in the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, Nathaniel Robin Mann decided he wanted to revive the ancient art of pigeon whistling, a tradition possibly thousands of years old, in which tiny flutes are attached to pigeons in flight. His experience with birds, however, was limited and he needed a bird expert.
"None of the pigeon racers wanted to get involved in a music project. Then someone said, 'Well, there's this guy in Nottingham who has a loft made of an old hutch that he straps to the back of his scooter. They call him Pigeon Pete.'"
Enter Pete Petravicius, Nottinghamshire ex-miner and steeplejack. A life-long passion for pigeons makes him the perfect trainer to teach the birds how to fly with their unusual musical attachments.
We follow Nathan and Pigeon Pete as their friendship, and their understanding of the pigeon whistles grow. From the gloom of the Pitt Rivers Museum, to the creation of a modern day 3D-printed whistle for Pete's pigeons.
Finally, we hear a pigeon's flight described in sound across the sky, creating a haunting, undulating chord cloud, accompanied by Nathan's hypnotic voice, singing songs he has discovered about pigeon culture.
About the presenters:
Nathaniel Mann is a composer, singer and performer. As Sound & Music's Embedded Composer in Residence at the Pitt Rivers Museum and Oxford Contemporary Music, he discovered the world of Pigeon Whistles, and started to explore their potential, supported by PRSF, a foundation helping new musicians make new work.
His eclectic projects chart diverse worlds of sound and culture, from bronze foundries and popcorn, to donkeys and Trafalgar Square - each has found a voice through Mann's work.
Pete Petravicius is unique in that he is the only man in the UK who trains his birds to return to a mobile pigeon loft. The birds can thus travel across the country, flying in formation and returning to their small motor home/coop. He's also an ex-miner and terrific raconteur who loves his Birmingham Rollers.
The Pigeons are cared for in strict accordance to guidelines and regulations laid out by the DEFRA & the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA). The use of Pigeon Whistles has been deemed as not causing stress or harm to the birds by independent animal welfare advisors and Pigeon Fancying experts.
3D Pigeon Whistles modelled and printed by Joe Banner at Printrite, Nottinghamshire.

Poetry For Sale?
Why are so many brands using poets and poems to sell their products now? Does it work? And is it new? Through poems, interviews and archive material, poet and copywriter Rishi Dastidar explores the long relationship between poetry and advertising – from the poets who have worked in advertising and those writing new poems for brands; to the companies which have used classic poems in their marketing; to the language itself and how poetic techniques work on us, and why advertisers might want to use them.
Rishi finds recordings of Clive James, WH Auden, Allen Ginsberg, Fay Weldon and George Orwell in programmes from the BBC Archives. And to bring things up to date, he speaks to: Portland-based Matthew Dickman, author of four collections of poetry and copywriter for some of the biggest ads of the last ten years, for brands such as Nike and Chrysler. To poet Jo Bell (Kith; How to be a Poet), who has written for Nationwide's advertising campaigns; and to Jim Thornton, Deputy Executive Creative Director of advertising agency VCCP, who commissions poets to write for Nationwide's ads. He also speaks to poets Will Harris (Rendang, Mixed-Race Superhero) and Clare Pollard (Incarnation; Editor of Modern Poetry in Translation) about why some poets don't feel comfortable writing for ads.

Ted Allbeury [1917 - 2005] has been compared to John le Carré and Frederick Forsyth as one of the UK's leading spy thriller writers. He was an intelligence officer with the Special Operations Executive during the Second World War and later ran agents between East and West Germany.
The title of this drama is derived from an old adage - variously ascribed to The Duke of Wellington and Rommel among others - which goes, 'time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted'.
Set in wartime London, Lieutenant Peter Harvey of Military Intelligence finds that the saying applies as much to his professional life as his personal one. When Harvey interrogates a refugee claiming to be a Belgian, his back story immediately raises suspicion.
Peter Harvey who must interrogate suspected spies during Germany's occupation of France, finds that this applies to both his professional and his private life..

Sophie Scott on Hattie Jacques
Born Josephine Edwina Jacques in 1922, Hattie began her career in music hall before graduating onto 1950s radio comedies such as ‘Educating Archie', 'It's That Man Again' and 'Hancock's Half Hour', where she became a household name.
TV and films followed, most notably the role of Eric Sykes' twin sister in 'Sykes' and the stern but lovelorn matron, headmistress or housekeeper in the 'Carry On' films. Hattie was teased about her weight in school and was often the figure of fun in her work. She largely accepted this role but yearned to do more serious work.
In contrast to many of the characters she played, Hattie was a vivacious person who loved men and liked a party.
Choosing Hattie is neuroscientist Sophie Scott who remembers Hattie as the first funny woman she heard or saw, being impressed at how she held her own with the men.
Together with expert Andy Merriman they explore Hattie's life including how she did her own welding in a film, her marriage to John Le Mesurier, affair with John Schofield, and whether the typecasting she suffered was a hindrance or a benefit to her career.
Presenter Matthew Parris remembers Hattie uttering "But not with a daffodil!" in 'Carry On Nurse'. You'll have to listen to find out where exactly that daffodil was discovered…

Mack the Knife
The Brecht/Weill song, 'Mack The Knife' first appeared in 'The Threepenny Opera' in Berlin in 1928. Sung about the criminal MacHeath, the 'play with music' is based on John Gay's 'The Beggar's Opera', who was inspired by the real-life English highwayman, Jack Sheppard.
The song became a hit when performed in 1959 by Bobby Darin.
Ella Fitzgerald famously forgot the words when performing live in Berlin in 1960 and her improvised version won a Grammy.
Suzi Quatro talks about how she performed it with her father as a child, playing bongos to accompany him.
Lenny Kaye from the Patti Smith Group recalls how he and Patti did a version of 'Mack The Knife' at their first ever performance together at St Marks Church in New York on 10th February 1971, as it was Brecht's birthday.
Film-maker Malcolm Clark tells the story of the song's first public performer, Kurt Gerron, an actor and director, who took the song into the darkest places of the Third Reich.

FRI 10:30 The Flower Fields (b01nb02j)
There's a gold rush in Cornwall; it's been going on for over a century - producing the first flowers of spring, daffodils especially.
Like mining, it's marked the landscape, and there are networks of tiny fields west of Mousehole and in the Isles of Scilly. Smaller than tennis courts, they nestle, safe from the wind between high hedges, warm on south facing terraced cliffs. From these old flower fields, called quillets, came something even more valuable than the 'Golden Harvest' of early blooming daffodils - delicate Cornish violets, carnations and anemones. From Victorian times to the 1960s fragrant bunches of these sped overnight by rail to reach the morning London markets.
Michael Bird - who lives in St Ives - listens while Bill Harvey works the plots his father tended. They are too small to admit machines and depend on the long-handled Cornish shovel. At Churchtown Farm on St Martins in the Scillies, Keith Low explains how the fields were created.
Michael walks the cliff gardens with the archaeologist Graeme Kirkham, who interprets the landscape they pass through, including the industry's mysterious skills and traditions. And he meets Bob Paterson at London’s Covent Garden market who remembers selling the violets and anemones that came on the Penzance trains, and hopes he might again.

In 2017, Radio 4's most passionate polemicist returned to the airwaves with a new format which proved both personal and profound, and promised to present other sides of Jeremy we hadn't heard before. There was even the prospect that he may sing. (He won't sing.)
Before his death [1st Feb 2019] Jeremy appeared regularly on The News Quiz and I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue in addition to writing ten series of Jeremy Hardy Speaks To The Nation, and winning numerous awards and almost certainly the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
The show's producer is Jeremy's long-standing accomplice, David Tyler, whose radio credits include Cabin Pressure, Thanks A Lot, Milton Jones!, Marcus Brigstocke's The Brig Society and Armando Iannucci's Charm Offensive.
