SAT 00:00 Soul Music (b01cjwtn)
Series 13
The Hallelujah Chorus
The Hallelujah chorus from Handel's Messiah is stirring, emotional and unmistakable.
The Alzheimer's Society runs a group called 'Singing for the Brain'. It's for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s and their carers who come together to sing in a group. As music is tied so closely to emotional memories, often lyrics and music remain firmly fixed in the brain, while other memories have died away.
Julia Burton recalls the power of the Hallelujah Chorus, as performed at a special event by Singing for the Brain groups in Wiltshire and Dorset.
Mrs Vera Fiton, whose late husband - Ted - had dementia talks about how important the weekly singing group was for both of them.
Carol Pemberton, of the Birmingham-based a capella quintet 'Black Voices', took part in the reopening concert of Birmingham Town Hall in 2007. The programme director suggested they sing The Messiah, but not as Handel intended, rather a daring interpretation arranged by Quincy Jones, called the 'Soulful Messiah'. It's a soul/gospel version which has to be heard to be believed! Carol describes performing it as one of the biggest highs of her career to date.
Jennifer Blakeley runs Alphabet Photography, a photo company based in Niagara Falls in Canada. She came up with the idea of staging a Flash Mob to promote her company. The Hallelujah Chorus had long been a favourite piece, and she - along with her local choir - set up a flash-mob in a local shopping mall. The result was emotional, extraordinary... and achieved so much more than the intended aim to boost her business. Even passers-by joined in., while others cried as emotions ran high. And the resulting You Tube video has now attracted over 37 million hits.
Paul Spicer, composer, conductor and organist, describes the historical backdrop to Handel's exhilarating composition.
Series exploring famous pieces of music and their emotional appeal.

SAT 00:30 Punk, the Pistols and the Provinces (b07byvp2)
Mark Hodkinson looks at the impact of punk rock outside of London and, in particular, in Yorkshire.
It was here that the Sex Pistols played their first and last gigs outside the capital.
Punk is viewed principally as a London phenomenon. The Sex Pistols in particular are synonymous with the capital, but their UK touring career outside the capital was book-ended by two shows more than 200 miles away.
On Wednesday 19 May 1976, six months before the release of their first single, the Sex Pistols performed at Sayer’s nightclub in the sleepy market town of Northallerton. Just 19 months later, on Christmas Day 1977, the band made their last UK appearance, at Ivanhoe’s, a small club in Huddersfield.
Music fan and experienced journalist/broadcaster, Mark Hodkinson, visits both towns and speaks to people who were at the gigs.
He plots the impact of punk in the provinces where thousands of disgruntled teenagers heeded The Clash’s entreaty to the ‘faraway towns’ to ‘come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls’ ("London Calling").
Brian Simpson was the DJ at Sayer’s which, in the weeks leading up to the Sex Pistols visit, had played host to Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders and The Searchers. Along with Steve Williams, who was also at the gig, he remembers people leaving the club in droves when the Sex Pistols began playing:
‘‘We had no idea who they were,’’ he says. ‘‘Northallerton was suddenly at the forefront of punk rock but we had no idea that we were. It was about two weeks later when I saw their picture in one of the music papers that I realised I’d seen them play.’’

SAT 04:30 Changing Climates (m002b73p)
Modern Understanding
The meteorologist, John Hammond explores how science fiction has served as a barometer for our wonder, curiosity and sometimes anxiety about the environment. With expert insight from Sarah Dillon - Professor of Literature and the Public Humanities and Professor of Human Geography Mike Hulme, we find out how writers imagined – sometimes very accurately – the changing world around them.
We explore near-future anxieties, when climate tensions reach boiling point in John Lanchester's 'The Wall', a stark drama of survival, isolation, and a world reshaped by rising seas.
Ravaged by the Change, an island nation has built the Wall, a high concrete barrier around its entire coastline. Joseph Kavanagh, a new Defender, has one task: to protect his section of the Wall from the Others, the desperate souls who are trapped on the rising seas beyond and are trying to get in. Failure will result in death or a fate perhaps worse: being put to sea and made an Other himself.
Read by Ben Norris
Produced by Mair Bosworth
Abridged for radio by Eileen Horne
And then following our drama - John's joined by Dr. Jennifer Francis, a Senior Atmospheric Scientist, to learn about the surprising effects of a warming world.
Changing Climates was presented by John Hammond and produced by Kerry McCarthy for BBC Radio 4 Extra.

Ever since she found herself mocked in academic circles for her broad South Yorkshire accent, Katie's made it her mission to celebrate her linguistic heritage.
She travels round what was historically England's largest county discovering a huge range of dialect and dialect poetry.
She meets with members of the Yorkshire Dialect Society, hears how dialect has evolved in different parts of Yorkshire, finds out what's been lost down the years and discovers a fresh passion for using Yorkshire dialect among several young poets in the region.
From Ilkley Moor Bah Tat (Yorkshire's unofficial national anthem) via the industry and land that spawned much of the dialect, to poets using it as part of various types of social activism, Katie gets a real sense of a county in which dialect is still very much an important part of identity.

SUN 16:45 Get Carter: The Bloody Chamber (b0bkqt8g)
The Bloody Chamber
The first of five stories to gobble you up from Angela Carter's iconic collection of fairy stories.
Angela begins by re-telling of the story of Bluebeard.
A young pianist marries a wealthy aristocrat, a Marquis, much older than herself and with three previous wives, all mysteriously deceased.
Finding herself alone in the empty castle, with nothing to do but play the piano, she cannot resist entering the one room the Marquis has forbidden to her.
At the time of writing The Bloody Chamber in the late 1970s, Carter was disaffected by both sides of the feminist debate. She re-worked traditional fairy tales from her own unique, literary outsider’s point of view, putting women at the centre of the stories.
With their feisty heroines and orgiastic mash-up of beasts, shape-shifters and ghouls, her extraordinary tales are the most perfect example of her style, not just for her incomparable prose, but also in the dizzying twists and turns of perception, fantasy and myth.
Controversially influenced by De Sade, she embraced the erotic, explored our deepest and darkest urges, and subverted the roles of hunter and prey, master and mistress so that, instead of male sexuality, it is the female that becomes transgressive and powerful.
Dramatised by Olivia Hetreed.

Continuing the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous, written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery.

It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.
Written and created by Pete Jackson.

MON 09:30 A History of the Brain (b016w808)
1. A Hole in the Head
Dr Geoff Bunn's ten-part history is a journey through 5000 years of our understanding of the most complex thing in the known universe.
From Neolithic times to the present day, Geoff journeys through the many ideas of what the brain is for and how it fulfils its functions.
What soon becomes obvious is that our understanding of this most inscrutable organ has in all periods been coloured by the social and political expedients of the day no less than by the contemporary scope of scientific or biological exploration.
In this episode, the focus is on trepanation, the practice of drilling holes in the skull believing that such operations might correct physiological or spiritual problems.
It reveals much about the understanding of the brain from Neolithic to recent times.
The Ancient Egyptians, however, rarely trepanned, even though their Secret Book of the Physician, one of the oldest medical texts in the world, shows that they recognised how damage to the brain can paralyse limbs on opposite sides of the body. Believing the heart to be the core organ, they discarded the brain altogether at death, since it had no part to play in the afterlife.

"On the ninety-minute drive to our camp we saw every animal that was in The Lion King and then some. They were just there, like ants at a picnic except they were elephants and giraffes. There were zebras and leopards and wildebeest and warthogs, all grazing or resting or fleeing on this grass-covered, seemingly limitless plane."
In the first story this week, "Trophy Room", David recalls his Kenyan wildlife safari with boyfriend, Hugh - enabling him to tick off another state on his seemingly endless list of visited countries. "We saw countless hippos in Kenya. 'All they want is to get into our swimming pool', the property manager, a man named Steven, told us. 'And if that happens, we will never get them out.'”
David's second, shorter story is "22%", where he wrestles with the concept of tipping. The show finishes with some extracts from his daily diary - who would have thought that buying a German-English dictionary would be fraught with such confusion....

TUE 09:30 A History of the Brain (b016wzrd)
2. The Blood of the Gladiators
In this episode, the focus is Ancient Greek scholarship, with Hippocrates' astonishingly prescient belief in the brain as the chief organ of control and his debunking of the myth of the 'sacred disease' with his assertion that epilepsy was the result of natural causes. Yet the belief that a cure lay in the magical properties of blood persisted for centuries.
Featuring the voices of Paul Bhattacharjee, Jonathan Forbes and Hattie Morahan.
Produced by Marya Burgess.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2011.

TUE 10:30 Swimming through Chocolate (b01s4qqb)
For 30 years, Gladys Jones and Sir Adrian Cadbury worked at the same factory in Bourneville in Birmingham, but never met. They now come together to reflect on their lives then and now, and the love of chocolate and sport that unites them.
Gladys joined Cadbury in 1936 at the age of 14. She was grateful to have a job that would provide her with security, further education and a chance to indulge in her great passion: swimming. Having previously only ever swum in the local canal, the new opportunity to use the factory's 'Girls Baths' on a daily basis led her to a new career in the sport's section at the plant as a swimming teacher and life saver.
Sir Adrian had a different trajectory: after Cambridge, the army and rowing in the Helsinki Olympics, he joined the family firm in 1952 rising to become Chairman of the company.
We join them both as they travel from their homes to the Bournville club to meet and compare their memories of the place, the people and a working life long gone.

Thursday's Child Is...
Multi-award winning comedian and author Mark Watson continues his probably doomed, but luckily funny quest to make sense of the human experience.
This series is about time - the days of the week, the stages of our existence - and the way we use it to make sense of things. We make our way through the working week, tonight considering Thursday. What does it mean to have 'far to go'? What was the lowpoint of Mark's career on the Waitrose checkout? And who does his mother consider 'a waste of space'?
Expect jokes, observations and interactions galore as Mark is aided, and sometimes obstructed, by the sardonic musical excellence of Flo & Joan. There's also a hand-picked comedy colleague each week - we are lucky tonight to have Sikisa.

THU 09:30 A History of the Brain (b016x2k4)
4. Spirits in the Material World
Dr Geoff Bunn's ten-part history is a journey through 5000 years of our understanding of the most complex thing in the known universe.
In this episode, the focus is on Thomas Willis, the 17th century physician after whom the 'Circle of Willis' - the circuit of arteries supplying blood to the brain - is named. Willis' Anatomy of the Brain and Nerves was a groundbreaking attempt to correlate brain anatomy with mental function. A friend of Christopher Wren, the humbly-born Willis was one of the founder members of the Royal Society. Yet his ideas were not universally accepted. The Cambridge philosopher, Henry More, considered the brain no more than 'a bowl of curds'', with no possibility that it could house reason.
Featuring the voices of Paul Bhattacharjee, Jonathan Forbes and Hattie Morahan.

Ann Veronica
1. A Fresh Start
Spirited and fiercely intelligent, Ann Veronica is a 21st Century woman in an Edwardian Hobble skirt.
She runs away from her stiflingly conventional home and her domineering father to make a fresh start in London.
A lively and surprising story; not least because it's created by HG Wells.
The storytelling is witty and ironic and Ann Veronica caused a scandal in its time because of the feminist sensibilities of the heroine and also because of the affair Wells was having with Amber Reeves, the woman who inspired the novel's eponymous character.
This is a relatively unknown and unexpected novel by Wells. The Spectator described Ann Veronica as a "poisonous book..." Although unlikely to offend modern listeners, this novel addresses many feminist versus femininity issues that are still relevant today.
The novel deals with the early stages of what is arguably the most important social development of the 20th Century, the education and financial and sexual liberation of women. And the fact is that, nearly 100 years later, the problem of women who want to marry, have children and pursue a liberating career, is still not easy to solve.
Wells makes a good case for freer sexual relationships, but Amber Reeves - and later Rebecca West - were the ones whose lives were changed - by bearing and bringing up a child by him.
Dramatised in two parts by Ellen Dryden.

In this episode, the focus is on electricity and communication, within the brain and between the brain and the rest of the body. When John Walsh showed, in 1776, that an eel could generate electricity, it became possible that human consciousness also relied on sparks fizzing within the brain. Coming at a time when Benjamin Franklin - an acknowledged expert on electricity - was signing the Declaration of Independence which asserted that all men are created equal, it generated a new perspective on the workings of the brain; the old hierarchical model was discarded in favour of the doctrine of equipotentiality.

Ann Veronica
2. A Quest for Liberation
This witty and lively tale sees Ann Veronica living alone in London in her quest for liberation.
But it's an uphill struggle; she has to fight off the sexual advances of a so called friend, discovers the love of her life is married, and gets arrested and imprisoned for a suffragette raid on the House of Commons.
The novel deals with the early stages of what is arguably the most important social development of the 20th Century. the education and financial and sexual liberation of women.
Dramatised by Ellen Dryden.
