Episode 2
New Year’s Day, 2003: A hangover is the least of Adrian’s problems on a day out with his new love.
The fifth book in our series of readings from Adrian’s diaries, written by Sue Townsend.
It started in 2002 and covers the controversial period of the Iraq War.
Adrian is 34, working in a bookshop in Leicester and about to become the proud owner of a trendy loft apartment. His single status is about to change too, putting further strain on his already stretched finances. As war looms, Adrian is unwavering in his support for Prime Minister Tony Blair and military action, even though his eldest son Glenn is facing deployment to the Gulf.
Sue Townsend was born in Leicester in 1946. She left school at 15 and was a single parent with three young children by the age of 23. Like Adrian, she wrote in secret for many years, and acknowledged that they often shared the same views - Adrian "C’est moi," she once said.
First published in 1989, Adrian Mole’s diaries were instant bestsellers and Adrian, the remarkably resilient underdog, quickly became a national treasure. While recording the experiences of one individual and showcasing Sue's fearless and razor sharp wit, the diaries also illustrate how socio-political matters of the time affected the lives of ordinary people.

SAT 10:00 The Real Comedy Controllers: The Things That Made Us Laugh (m00147qf)
Origins
1. It's That Man Again
Instead of celebrity Comedy Controllers choosing their favourites, it’s the turn of those who, in their own ways, must take the blame for many of the shows heard on BBC Radio 4 Extra.
Between them, Paul Jackson, Beryl Vertue, John Lloyd and Jimmy Mulville have well over a 150 years of gut-busting, side-aching woofers, gags and - let's be honest - the occasional horrific mistimed silence.
In front of an audience in London's iconic BBC Radio Theatre in Broadcasting House - the home of British Radio comedy - they reveal what they do, why they do it and what makes them laugh.
In the first of three programmes, they look back to the wartime stars of Variety and the entertainers, the men and women (though largely men) who entertained us through the dark days of conflict and the drab times of austerity and rationing.
Featuring:
‘ITMA’ - It's That Man Again (Victory Edition).
Tommy Handley's gang celebrate victory in Europe, as broadcast on 10th May 1945.
With an extract from ‘Hi Gang’ and Peter Sellers’ performance of ‘Balham, Gateway to the South’.
Series Producers: Paul Kobrak and Dixi Stewart

The Cultural Frontline - A Poet's Guide to Lagos
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects The Cultural Frontline - A Poet's Guide to Lagos.
Poet Efe Paul Azino introduces us to the thriving spoken word scene in Lagos and - through their poems and stage performances - the priorities of its young people.
From the political to the personal, by listening to them we get a picture of what's happening today and how they feel about it, whether it’s disillusionment about the upcoming elections, or their thoughts on navigating the challenges of life in the megacity.
Lagos’ spoken word scene - from new monthly 'Poetry Cafes' set up by Efe, to the Lagos International Poetry Festival – affords a platform for a vibrant movement in which women in particular are creating important work. Young people are seeking to make their voices heard where they're otherwise marginalised. The current crop of spoken word poets is conscious of the city's historical contributions to the creative and artistic life of the continent, and the ghosts of Nigeria's heroes of dissent, from Chinua Achebe to Fela Kuti, set the tone of some of the work being performed.
But spoken word in Lagos isn't just a vent, and the new generation are carving out their own path: there's room for joy and the deeply personal, and a craft and beauty to the best work being created. The pulsating city makes its presence felt throughout the programme as Efe takes us around Lagos gearing up for festival season in autumn 2018, and we meet the people the poetry scene draws in.

Nicola Adams
Kirsty Young’s castaway is Nicola Adams.
She made history when she won the first ever Olympic gold medal in women's boxing at London 2012, retaining it in Rio 2016. She is the first woman fighter to hold European, World, Commonwealth and Olympic titles.
Having watched classic Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard fights on TV as she was growing up, she entered the ring for the first time at a working men’s club when she was only 13. When she was 14, her mother contracted meningitis and for several months Nicola looked after herself and her younger brother. She turned to acting in order to help fund her boxing training, appearing as an extra in Coronation Street and Emmerdale. She first represented her country when she was 18. In 2009 it was announced that women’s boxing would feature for the first time at the London Olympics, although before her selection for Team GB she fell down stairs and had to recover from a fracture in one of her vertebra.
In 2012 she topped The Independent newspaper’s Pink List of the most powerful LGBT people in public life, was made an MBE for services to boxing in 2013 and received a 'Paving The Way' award at the 2016 Mobo awards.

Award-winning writer Colm Tóibín explores the complex relationships between three of Ireland's literary giants and their fathers:
Oscar Wilde
WB Yeats
James Joyce
From Oscar Wilde's polymath father who was a doctor specialising in diseases of the eye and ear, an amateur architect, as well as a statistician who was knighted for his work; to WB Yeats' father a brilliant correspondent and impoverish artist who struggled to complete a painting; to John Stanislaus Joyce, a drinker and story-teller who was unwilling to provide for his family.
He starts by taking a literary walk around Dublin, stopping off at a variety of landmarks immortalised in the works of some of Ireland's most famous writers.
At the same time he reflects on his own writing life.

Adam Smith
BBC Radio 4's premier comedy-economics hybrid is five series old.
So the time is right to take a step back, and perhaps two steps up, and tackle the big, competing theories of Macro Economics.
These are little short of religions to their proponents, and the figures who devised them dominate the intellectual landscape in a way that mere politicians can only dream of. These are the Big Beards, the Glinting Eyes, the Bristling Moustaches and Eyebrows of "Worldly Philosophy" and their insights, calculations and hallucinations remain as contentious today as they were when first inked into place.
Simon Evans, with the help of Undercover Economist, Tim Harford will advance through the modern industrial era using three great beacons as their guide - Adam Smith, Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes - and reflect on how they continue to shape our world today.
In this opening episode, Adam Smith is under Simon and Tim's jokenomics microscope. Smith, the author of The Wealth of Nations, the first modern work of economics, is still incomparably influential in Western political and economic thought. His faith and trust in the Invisible Hand remains one of the most misunderstood of all economic paradigms, and in his name to this day are committed all too visibly ham-fisted atrocities, that would make even his pale Presbyterian skin blanche.
A £20 note serves as a handy mutlimedia accompaniment to this episode.

Regrets, I've Had A Few
True stories told live in the USA: Sarah Austin Jenness introduces stories dealing with regret, where hindsight is always 20/20.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.
First heard on PRX in the USA in 2020.

Rufus Wainwright (the A-Side)
Rufus Wainwright talks about his breakthrough 2003 album, ‘Want One’. With John Wilson. From 2014.
Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.
Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.
A-Side: 'Want One' with singer-songwriter-composer Rufus Wainwright.
The son of folk singers Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, Rufus began playing the piano at the age of 6 and touring at 13. Before he had even reached voting age, he had been nominated for Best Original Song and Most Promising Male Vocalist awards. But it would be another 14 years before he released the album that has been variously described as "obscenely lush"... a "gorgeous meditation on emotional displacement" and "a three-hankie weepie". The first part of what was intended to be a double album, Want One is full of songs about love, loss, family, addiction and popular culture, including 'I Don't Know What It Is', 'Go Or Go Ahead' and 'Dinner at Eight'.
Not only does he play exclusive versions of some of these songs, in a frank and no-punches-pulled interview, Rufus also reveals what part drugs, sex, near-death experiences and extended arguments with his father played in the making of this remarkable album.
In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

Rufus Wainwright (the B-Side)
Rufus Wainwright answers audience questions about his breakthrough 2003 album, 'Want One'.
John Wilson talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them.
Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes, with John initially quizzing the artist about the album in question, and then, in the B-side, the audience puts the questions. Both editions feature exclusive live performances
Programme 2 (B-side): 'Want One'
Having discussed the making of 'Want One' (in the A-side of the programme), Rufus Wainwright responds to questions from the audience and performs acoustic live versions of some to the tracks from the album.
The son of folk singers Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, Rufus began playing the piano at the age of six and touring at 13.
The first part of what was intended to be a double album, 'Want One' is full of songs about love, loss, family, addiction and popular culture, including 'I Don't Know What It Is', 'Go Or Go Ahead' and 'Dinner at Eight'.

TUE 22:00 Janey Godley: The C Bomb (m001np9k)
4. I Don't Know How Long I've Got Left
Janey Godley doesn’t know how long she’s got left, so she’s telling ALL the jokes! This is her extraordinary story. Fearless and unflinching, yet life affirming stand-up at its very best.
In this last episode of the series, Janey confronts her terminal diagnosis of ovarian cancer, and jokes about how she copes, how the people around her cope, and what she thinks her legacy might be. She tells a fascinating story about her mother and friends around the kitchen table singing, and there's a bolt of comedy lightning that's very fitting.
Since Janey’s comedy career began, she’s exposed, on stage, many painful traumas from her life - from childhood neglect and sexual abuse, to marrying into a gangster family who eventually turned on her, and even the murder of her mother - with a seeming lack of sentimentality and the blackest of humour.
Relentlessly authentic, she's also had to face up to her own mistakes - taking responsibility and apologising both publicly and onstage, as well as sharing the shame of being ‘cancelled’ and the very dark place that took her to.
Then, just months later... the hand grenade of a cancer diagnosis forced her to start fighting for her life.
Now, after finally admitting that after everything she’s been through in life, maybe she‘s not “fine”, and with a terminal diagnosis, she’s submitted to the ultimate ‘C bomb' for many men and women of her generation - counselling.
And as a result of this insight, she’s more hilarious and compelling onstage than ever.
Recorded live in front of an audience in her hometown, Glasgow.

Elvis Presley Comeback Special
Paul Morley tells a parallel story of Elvis and America, from the vantage point of the King's finest hour in 1968.
"I've got to do this sooner or later," Elvis says sheepishly, "so I may as well do it now."
And so the 1968 Comeback Special begins: his quiff defying gravity and his leather jumpsuit chafing, as he bursts into an elemental rendition of Heartbreak Hotel. It had been one of his first singles 13 years before, initially recorded when he was still a teenager living in the Jim Crow South at the beginning of rock and roll.
Much had happened in the meantime: JFK, The Beatles, the hippies and Detroit soul. And Elvis had become a different person, depressed, addicted and increasingly irrelevant.
So by 1968, after his stint in the army, the uninspired films and the years of absence from the stage, the Comeback Special was an opportunity to resuscitate Elvis's career, to claw back his status as a powerful, credible force.
And it did, fleetingly. He was fabulous, and his discography is never better showcased than on that day.
But it also marked the point at which it became clear that the King was fragile.
He was 33, a new father, and he would never be this good again.
Paul Morley believes the '68 Comeback Special shows us Elvis at his best. But also that it offers a vantage point from which to look backwards, forwards and outwards to a changing America - remembering where the hillbilly kid had come from and poignantly aware of where he would end up.

Gallery of Empathy
Series 2 - Episode 2
In the second of his two-part series Robin talks about appreciating art for how it makes us feel, he shares some stories about his favourite artists and celebrates the places that books and art can take us.
Escaping the confines of The Infinite Monkey Cage, comedian Robin Ince takes us on a journey through his Reality Tunnel in his second two-part stand-up series, recorded specially for Radio 4.
For over 30 years Robin Ince has been discharging fascinating thoughts, unusual knowledge, and infectious excitement into the universe. Over this time, these disparate, dusty specs of information have steadily clumped together and formed into an entity known as the 'Reality Tunnel'.
Previously, Robin's live appearances have only been visible to those astute enough to be tracking his trajectory; those with a keen enough eye to catch a fleeting glimpse of him as he twinkles through their orbit, emitting his ideas, shedding light on the human condition, before vanishing again into the distance. But now, using specialist recording tools and fancy editing, this phenomenon has been captured in high resolution audio for all to hear.
Praise for series 1

FRI 20:00 A Man's a Man for a' That: Frederick Douglass in Scotland (b06kb0g2)
Opera singer Andrea Baker explores the impact of Frederick Douglass and the time he spent in Scotland, the country which she's made her home. As the great-grandaughter of slaves, she's always been inspired by Douglass, who escaped slavery to become an abolitionist and social reformer but, until now, was unaware of the impact he'd had on Scotland and vice versa.
In this feature, which features Parker Sawyers as the voice of Frederick Douglass, she discovers how Scotland got deep into the veins of Frederick Douglass. When he visited in 1846, he found an expression of freedom denied him in the United States: "in (no) class of society, have I found any curled lip of scorn... on account of my complexion; not once". He famously stated: "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong." Is it any wonder then that he felt a connection with the country that produced the immortal poem 'A Man's a Man for A' That'? Indeed, addressing a white audience at a Burns supper two years after his visit, Douglass said, "if any think me out of my place on this occasion (pointing at the picture of Burns), I beg that the blame may be laid at the door of him who taught me that 'a man's a man for a' that."
It could be said that Douglass's influence on Scotland was equally dramatic. He spearheaded the 'Send Back the Money' campaign - what we'd now call a boycott movement aimed at cutting respectable ties with the American South. The idea was to shame the Free Church of Scotland into giving back Southern donations that came from the blood of slaves. Douglass lectured across Scotland - putting fire in the belly of the Scottish anti-slavery movement at a time when the cause was wilting elsewhere in Britain. Andrea Baker investigates if the money was ever sent back.
What was it about Scotland which so 'freed' Douglass? And did the anti-racist sentiment he espoused seed later Scottish campaigns against slavery and apartheid.

It was a dark and stormy night. A secret message arrived addressed to Rutherford and Fry from a mysterious woman called Heidi Daugh, who demanded to know: "Why do people like to be scared? For example, going on scary amusement park rides and watching horror movies that make you jump.”
What followed was an investigation, which would test our intrepid duo to their very limits. They explore the history of horror, starting with its literary origins in the Gothic fiction classic 'The Castle of Otranto'.
Adam challenges Hannah to watch a horror film without hiding behind a cushion. She quizzes horror scholar Mathias Clasen to find out why some people love the feeling of terror, whilst it leaves other cold.
Sociologist Margee Kerr and psychologist Claudia Hammond are also on hand to explore why scary movies are so powerful and popular.
Then Rutherford and Fry investigate the more physical side of fear, when they delve into the history of roller coasters to investigate why we enjoy being scared.
Never ones to shy away from a challenge, the pair attempt to channel their inner adrenaline junkies with a trip on one the UK's scariest roller coasters at Thorpe Park.
David Poeppel from New York University studies the science of screaming, and we discover what makes screams uniquely terrifying. Plus, psychologist and broadcaster Claudia Hammond describes some early experiments which tested how fear affects our body.
This episode is a remake of two earlier broadcast episodes.

FRI 21:30 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - The Lost Special (b01c8cbn)
On the 3 June 1890, a gentleman who gave his name as Monsieur Louis Caratal, arrived at the London and West Coast Central station in Liverpool. Affairs of the utmost importance require him to travel to Paris without delay. Having missed the London Express, M Caratal asks that a special train be provided - money is no object.
The special train duly sets off from Liverpool but never arrives in Manchester, apparently disappearing somewhere en route. But a train can't just disappear into thin air, can it? Perhaps there has been a terrible accident?
Upon investigation, the incredulous police and railway officials cannot explain what might have happened to the train and its passengers. The newspapers are flooded with suggestions; one even proffered in The Times by an 'amateur reasoner of some celebrity at that date' (possibly an allusion to Sherlock Holmes), but no theory leads to the recovery of the missing train.
And so the matter stood, until a prisoner under a death sentence for murder, one Herbert de Lernac, offers a confession that at last reveals how one of the greatest and most inexplicable crimes of the century was executed and finally discloses the fate of the 4.31 from Liverpool and its passengers.
An intriguing story of villainy and ingenuity from one of Britain's most famous crime writers, Arthur Conan Doyle.

Series 2
Shrewsbury to Pwllheli
Comedy icon Alexei Sayle continues his series of rail journeys across the country with a trip from Shrewsbury to Pwllheli on the Cambrian coast line.
Alexei’s mission is to break the golden rule of travelling by train and actually talk to his fellow passengers, in a quest for conversations with strangers that will reveal their lives, hopes, dreams and destinations.
Along the way, Alexei holds a finger into the wind of the thoughts and moods of the great British travelling public. There’s humour, sadness and surprise as people reveal what is going on in their lives and, as Alexei passes through familiar towns and cities, he also delves into his own personal stories of a childhood in Liverpool and a long career as a comedian, actor and author.
Alexei has a life-long ticket to ride in his DNA, as his father was a railway guard. As a child, Alexei travelled on trains with his mum and dad, not only in the UK but also abroad. While other children in Liverpool at the time thought a trip to Blackpool was a big adventure, Alexei travelled to Paris, experienced the Orient Express, had summer holidays in Czechoslovakia and visited mysterious cities with unpronounceable names in the farthest corners of Europe.
In this programme, among his many fellow travellers, Alexei miraculously finds Barry, an old school friend from Liverpool; Denise, who has been given an extraordinary set of directions in order to deal with the complex arrangements for her holiday; Geoff, who on a whim, decided to buy one of the UK's oldest cinemas, in a tiny Welsh seaside town; Isabel, who is off to monitor dolphins - and Margaret, who has been going to the same spot on the Cambrian coast for her holiday every year for more than 50 years - and now her extended family is following the same tradition.
