SAT 10:00 1963: That Was The Year That Was (b03j0wmn)
Episode 1
Michael Grade celebrates 1963 with special guests Barry Norman, Barry Cryer, Annie Nightingale, Gillian Reynolds and Tony Blackburn.
The first of two programmes recalling the music, culture, social upheavals and news stories of the year and playing some great music and archive.
Guests discuss the year that signalled the birth of modern Britain, phone boxes, timing your trip to the cinema correctly, the great long winter with no sport, a distinct lack of central heating and fashion in the shape of Beatles jackets and hysteria brewing about the band in its infancy.
1963 was the year of The Profumo Scandal, the murder of President Kennedy, the Beatles first number 1, The Great Train Robbery, the Beeching report on the UK's railways, Martin Luther King's 'I Have A Dream' speech, the start of the National Theatre, and the first episode of Dr Who.
It was also the year that David Frost became a national icon, presenting the hugely groundbreaking BBC TV series That Was The Week That Was.
Sir David was to have presented the series, but a few weeks before recording he died of a heart attack. As a consequence, these shows have become something of a tribute to him and will feature extracts of TW3 and discussion of its impact on British life.
From London's Riverside Studios with an audience.
One of the most memorable features of TW3 was its sig tune, performed by Millicent Martin. "THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 1963" features a reworked version of the wonderful tune, performed by The Segue Sisters. Ron Grainer, the composer, is sadly overlooked and his other works include the themes for Dr Who, The Prisoner and Steptoe and Son.
Producer: David Morley.

The Reindeer Poets
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and chooses The Reindeer Poets:
Andrew McGibbon explores the poetry, song and yoiking of the indigenous Sámi people who live across the Western European Arctic - a region including Russia's Kola Peninsula, Norway, Finland and Sweden.
The relationship between the traditional epic yoik songs and contemporary poetry is explored, along with the multimedia approach that several contemporary Sámi poets and artists choose for their creative expression. The yoik is the distinctive form of cultural expression for the Sámi people and comparable to the traditional chanting of some First Nations in the Northern American continent.
The United Nations designated 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages, and the programme features Mikkal Morottaja, aka Amoc, a poet who raps in Inari Sámi - a language spoken by fewer than 300 people in the world. He raps about Father Christmas being overwhelmed with selfish Christmas demands.
Sámi poetry takes tradition seriously, looking back to find the way forward, and giving a group of people in the Arctic north a voice.
Featuring the sounds of melting and retreating ice in the Arctic along with the sounds of creatures living under the ice as an active, low volume soundtrack audible throughout the programme.
Written and Presented by Andrew McGibbon.
Producers: Louise Morris and Nick Romero

SUN 10:30 The Last of The Last of the Summer Wine (b00tjf81)
Ian McMillan pays tribute to TV’s longest running sitcom 'Last of the Summer Wine' which drew to a close in August 2010.
In its heyday, the adventures of senior citizens Compo, Foggy and Clegg drew audiences of 19 million.
It would be hard to argue that the series is anything but a British classic, which seemed immortal.
The lyrical adventures of three bungling, elderly oddballs charmed viewers of all generations for over a third of a century - and this programme charts the show's unbelievable success.
The show was pioneering in many ways, one of which was the decision to have and ultimately set the trend for a double length Christmas special.
Featuring exclusive interviews with major cast members and archive of the late Bill Owen and Kathy Staff, who turned the character of battleaxe Nora Batty into a treasured national icon.
And we delve behind the scenes with writer Roy Clarke and producer/director Alan JW Bell who offer fascinating insights into the show's journey from script to screen.
Cast members pay tribute to Ronnie Hazelhurst's theme music and and Ian McMillan calls to mind his own favourite characters in the series.
Why did the series survive so long, surprising critics, audiences and even the BBC itself which has often been accused of underestimating its importance?
