He can be heard regularly on the smash-hit satirical podcast The Bugle, and his work is "unrelenting and uproarious" (Chortle), "brave, biting, ballsy and ultimately, brilliant" (Time Out), "multi-dimensional and multi-layered, adding twist upon twist and full of little parcels of surprises" (Beyond The Joke), and "engaged, conscientious and consistently, archly funny, Ballard is precisely the sort of political commentator the world needs" (The Scotsman).

Nikesh Shukla on the Great Gama
Ghulam Mohammad, or the Great Gama Pehlwan as he was more commonly known, was a Muslim wrestler born into a Kashmir family in India in 1878.
When writer Nikesh Shukla first came across him in a book at the airport, he thought he must be a fictional character- the stories seemed so far-fetched. Gama reportedly drank 10 litres of milk and ate six chickens every day. He also grappled with 40 wrestlers a day and did 5000 squats.
Surely this was an action hero figure and not a real man?
But Gama was real with a career spanning over 50 years, unbeaten not only in India, but also in England and Europe.
In 1910 he was dubbed the strongest man in the world. And the press feared his strength might inspire rebellion in India, then under British rule.
Joining Nikesh to tell the story of the Great Gama is Dr Majid Sheikh.

Tell Me a Storycorps
In 2003, radio producer David Isay had an idea - to ask Americans one simple question: "Tell me about your life", and let everyone hear the answer.
But he knew people tell it best to a single interested party. So when he set up StoryCorps, with its Storybooths across the States, he arranged things so that everyone who visits the booths has to be accompanied by someone else.
It's not recording for posterity; it's a conversation with a friend or relative, which allows for an intimacy and spontaneity that's unusual in oral history recording. Dubbed 'The conversation of a lifetime', the stories are available on-line and are used in documentaries on NPR. They are all archived in the Library of Congress, and Isay has quoted from many in his book about the project.
At Liverpool John Moores' University, media students were inspired by the StoryCorps approach to record pairs of people telling each other: The Thing I've Never Told Anyone. They found themselves drawn in, given the opportunity to ask family and friends questions they'd never previously had time to. Isay emphasises this aspect of StoryCorps: how it creates a space for interaction in our time-poor lives.
The method seems to get results. But some oral historians have questioned whether they have lasting value. At the British Library, Oral History Curator Rob Perks says he often finds them sentimental and believes they lack the objective rigour of the traditional oral history interview.
Simon Garfield, who has drawn on the Mass Observation Diaries for his own books, compares StoryCorps with traditional oral history and asks whether, now we all possess the means to record our lives, those recordings are still of value and worth keeping.

Into this paranoid world, a teenage girl emerges, a girl who can sleep. Protected by her friends, she goes on the run from the authorities who are keen to control and study her gift. The group ends up living in a city centre squat, surviving as a group by shoplifting and begging.
The group grows increasingly anxious and fractious, with Ellah (the sleeper)'s boyfriend Jamie lapsing into cultish beliefs in the 'old gods', in which lullabies are chanted as prayers, worshipping sleep. Some of the other group members join in these rituals. Keller, the level-headed natural leader of the group, is struggling to keep the peace.

Marin Alsop
From Aretha Franklin to Gustav Mahler.
Conductor Marin Alsop shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young
Music Director of both The Baltimore Symphony and The Sao Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, she is a maestro with a mission: music, she believes, is a powerful vehicle for social change.
She had the good fortune to be brought up in "a household that exuded possibility" and was filled with music - both her parents played professionally. She took up the piano aged two, swapped to the violin at 6 and then aged 9, saw Leonard Bernstein at work and made the decision that conducting would be her career. Much later she would go on to be mentored by the man who inspired her.
It bores her when interviewers ask why there aren't more women conductors - nonetheless her capacity to maximise the few opportunities she was given as a young woman making her way in an exclusively mans' world gives one a flavour of her indomitability. Her day-to-day job after all is working out how to convince 100 experts to do what she wants.
She says, "maybe it's being an only child: you want to bring people together and create this big family feeling, I don't know what it is but I always gravitated towards organising."

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

What happens when your Dad's an African-American soul star and your Mum's a music-loving girl from a Sheffield council estate?
Are your roots on the terraces at a Sheffield United match, or in the stylings of a Spike Lee film?
For writer and photographer Johny Pitts, whose parents met in the heyday of Northern Soul on the dance floor of Sheffield’s legendary King Mojo Club, how he navigates his black roots has always been an issue.
Not being directly connected to the Caribbean or West African diaspora culture, all he was told at school was that his ancestors were slaves.
So Johny heads off to the USA, to trace his father's musical migration and to tell an alternative story of Black British identity.
From Pittsmore in Sheffield, to Bedford Stuyvesant – ‘Bed-Stuy’ - in Brooklyn, and all the way down to South Carolina where his grandmother picked cotton, Johny Pitts makes a journey of self-discovery.
On the way, he meets author Caryl Phillips, Kadija a half-sister he never knew, and historian Bernard Powers. He visits the Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn and the Bush River Missionary Baptist Church, in Newberry, South Carolina.
He also tracks down a whole host of long-lost cousins, and talks to Pulitzer winning writer Isabel Wilkerson.
Johny Pitts' journey shines a light on the shadows of his ancestry, revealing stories and culture that bring a new understanding of his own mixed race identity and history.

The Age of Emulsion: with Laurence Llewelyn Bowen
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen explores the social history of DIY home improvements, from Chintz to Changing Rooms and beyond.
The Age of Emulsion is a story about our changing attitudes to housing, consumerism, national identity, sense of individuality, class, politics, and relationships between the sexes.
Starting from the 1950s, Laurence draws on the rich TV and radio archive to show how DIY went from being a necessity after the Second World War, to a wholesome leisure activity, and a fully-blown national obsession.
What’s clear is that TV and radio played a pivotal role. Britain’s first hardboard hero was Barry Bucknell whose Do It Yourself TV series launched in 1956, attracting 7 million viewers. Magazines like Practical Householder advertised tools but also a modern lifestyle to go with it.
Over the next 50 years, TV and magazines would teach us practical skills and democratise interior design - from distressing, to rag rolling and stencilling. In the 90s, DIY became the new rock and roll, as reality makeover shows combined emotion AND emulsion. But what does our attitude say about us now? As DIY retailers struggle and millennials are blamed for their lack of skills, is this the end of the Age of Emulsion?
Laurence also sets two of his favourite interior decorating challenges to novice DIYers Mae-Li Evans and Calum Lynn.

TUE 14:30 The Disappearing Art of the Mix Tape (b00cj8d8)
The home made compilation cassette was a distillation of its maker's character and emotion
Let's face it: kids with MP3s don't know they're born; they'll never grasp the art of crafting a mix tape. It's something personal, the musical expression of a generation...
The cassette age was a temporary window in which the art form of the bedroom briefly shone. Nothing says I love you like spending five hours in front of a tape deck and record player, wearing out the pause button and your stylus. Summing up your emotions through the strictly limited vocabulary of a small pile of records and what you could steal off Radio 1's chart show. But the tape could communicate so much more than romantic intentions. The tape for a new friend explains what kind of person you want to be, the mix for an old and distant friend tells them the person you have become in their absence.
But the download has killed off the cassette - now everyone has access to an almost infinite record collection and playlists can be of unlimited length. Writer, broadcaster and former NME journalist, David Quantick celebrates that art form.We hear from compilation makers including novelist Iain Banks and poet Simon Armitage and hear some of their favourite mix tape tracks.
A professor of medieval history tells us how he had sustained a 30 year friendship with an HMV store manager by exchanging tapes every month. And Elbow's Guy Garvey explains how his sister Becky inspired his musical career with the many cassettes she compiled for him...

Waterloo Sunset
Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks was released in 1967.
Soul Music hears the poignant, thoughtful and life-changing memories of those who love it.
Childhood holidays were an escape from bullying for John Harvey. He describes the unforgettable moment when he heard Waterloo Sunset for the first time, on the radio, in 1967. Getting to know the music of The Kinks, and finding out about the character of its lead singer, Ray Davies, shaped and coloured his life from then on.
Allison Moore Adams is an American who married Vernon, a Brit. Waterloo Sunset was sung at his bedside following a terrible road accident. The painting used to illustrate this edition of Soul Music is of Vernon and Allison on Waterloo Bridge. It's by Allison's friend, Isabelle Logie, who also sang to Vernon in hospital.
Christopher Young used to work in mental health. For him, the lyrics of Waterloo Sunset symbolise the isolation that many people feel.
Professor Allan Moore, a musicologist, discusses why this beautiful pop song works so well.

Ashley Blaker's Goyish Guide to Judaism - 2
Ashley Blaker, Britain's only ultra-Orthodox stand up comedian, returns with an insider's view of his religion. Following the success of his first guide, this is another a whistle-stop tour of Jewish life and, in particular, a very rare glimpse into the normally inaccessible world of strict Orthodox Judaism.
Ashley is already a well-known name in the Jewish community, having undertaken a number of critically acclaimed UK tours as well as performing sell-out shows in Israel, South Africa, Canada and very recently in New York. The Jewish press has described him as "the haredi Michael McIntyre".
As well as being a popular and experienced live performer, Ashley is also a comedy writer and producer for radio and TV. He was responsible for unleashing Little Britain on an unsuspecting nation on Radio 4. But, being a strict orthodox Jew, he is surely the only person who works in TV without actually owning one.
The Jerusalem Post recently described Ashley as "a walking contradiction".
The Times of Israel pointed out the astonishment his appearance can provoke: "The astonishment, of course, is that with Blaker, what you see is what you get: a skinny bearded man wearing a black suit and kippah, and sporting peyot and tzitzit of the strictly Orthodox community to which he now belongs. But this is not a uniform which he dons only for his interfaces with Jewish audiences. No, he wears this in his day job too."

1. The Mission
Barbara's mission is to save East End souls in the West Ham Salvation shelter. A tale of rich privilege and a battle of wills. All wrapped up in a romance, the return of a long lost father and a little matter of finding a foundling to carry on the Undershaftarms and gunpowder empire.
Starring Eleanor Tomlinson and Rebecca Front.
Written in 1905, George Bernard Shaw’s classic is funny, enjoyable and crafty in dividing opinion and it leaves you pondering whether anything has changed over the years.
At its heart - a simple and intriguing conflict: the struggle between arms manufacturer Andrew Undershaft and his Salvationist daughter Barbara. Can a father win his daughter's heart and mind?
All the best things about Shaw are here - the humour, the teasing paradoxical thinking and the sense of life being both absurd and deadly serious. How should people be ruled and how should they be helped? And who is really pulling the strings in the struggle for power - politicians or money?

FRI 14:30 My Mother's Sari (b05s3gz4)
Every morning, Dr Shahidha Bari dresses for work and travels into London on a packed tube train looking much like the people around her.
But, as the child of immigrants growing up in a Bengali Muslim household in southeast England, she has also been accustomed to wearing entirely different sorts of clothes, reflective of her particular ancestry and cultural traditions.
These days, stacks of elaborate silk saris, embroidered shawls and ornate bangles languish in a remote part of her wardrobe, now only rarely worn at weddings and religious ceremonies. But, in many ways, these are the most precious items of clothing she owns, profoundly bound up with memory and meaning, and connecting her to a life from which she has inevitably grown apart. Shahidha's most vivid recollections of her childhood are those of her mother bringing up 6 boisterous young children, always immaculately dressed in pressed and pleated saris of varied colours, textures and designs.
In this programme, Shahidha traces the story of the sari, explores how it feels to wear one and asks what it meant for women like her mother. She talks with a range of women, including broadcaster Mishal Husain and writer Monica Ali about their experiences. And she explores the powerful, painful, sometimes complicated relationships between mother and daughters, and discovers the unexpected ways in which clothing can be imprinted with feelings of nostalgia, love and loss, whichever background we come from.

Seventy-Three Seconds
"Good luck, bad luck, who can tell..."
The return of multi-award winning storyteller Sarah Kendall with more hilarious, gripping and moving stories.
The trilogy showcases a collection of seemingly unconnected stories and memories, which, together, combine to form a meditation on luck, survival and hindsight.
Scrolling backwards and forwards in time to different moments in her life, Sarah creates an intricate montage, demonstrating the interconnectedness of life.
In the first of three parts, Sarah shares her childhood memories of her brother's 6th birthday party, of their first pet and of her family gathering on the lawn to catch a glimpse of Halley's Comet in 1986. Plus an insight into the process of how this show came together, as Sarah watches a video of the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster.
