One man inspired a teenage David Morrissey to become an actor. His name is Roger Hill.
But in Liverpool, from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, he was known as the Man with the Mohican.
Presenting this celebration of Roger Hill, David reveals how the extraordinary Liverpool-based theatre director, DJ and transvestite performance artist inspires other artists, including actors, musicians and playwrights.
Hill's period as director at the Everyman Youth Theatre produced an explosion of creative talent – from David Morrissey, Ian Hart, Kathy Tyson and Stephen McGann, to performance poet Gerry Potter, journalists and playwrights.
Janice Long, who worked alongside Hill at BBC Radio Merseyside, refers to him as an icon and, along with former punk singer turned nightclub and cultural entrepreneur Jayne Casey, thinks of him as "Liverpool's John Peel".
Roger Hill still helps shape arts policy and the next generation of actors, and continues to inspire as a performance artist. His alter ego, Mandy Romero, has travelled the world and was Liverpool's unofficial Queen of Culture in 2008.
Morrissey reminisces with Hill about the long lost Mohican, hears from those whose careers he has helped to shape, and pays a personal tribute to an unsung hero of the British arts scene.

Josie Long: What Next?
Three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and self-effacing national treasure Josie Long returns to the R4 airwaves to turn her sharp but affectionate eye on the state of the nation – and world, and planet – as we begin to emerge from two years of upheaval.
‘What’s Next?’ was a slogan stencilled all over major cities by climate change campaigners during the pandemic. It’s a fair question. In this stand-up masterclass – adapted from one of the most lauded Edinburgh Fringe shows in recent years – Josie considers the responsibility we have to our children with the planet in the parlous state it is.
She has become a mother herself (the first person ever, to her knowledge, to have not one, but two babies) and, through the prism of new parenthood, there is a lot to be alarmed about - corrupt governments, melting icecaps, health-food entrepreneurs making unsubstantiated claims about dates. And yet, in among all the existential crisis of the world in 2022, Josie finds hope and humanity.
A memoir of life-altering experiences broadened out into a manifesto for the direction we take now, post-pandemic, What’s Next deals surehandedly with both the personal and the global, showcasing the talents of a comic with an unusual and much-cherished ability to straddle the playful and the profound.
She may not have all the answers to our many societal crises, but nobody poses the questions in quite such an impassioned and entertaining way.

But he longs to make his mark in the field of science – something consequential enough to present to The Royal Society in London.
Influenced by something he’s read, he decides to conduct a radical investigation into the Resilience of the Human Mind Without Society. He places an ad for a suitable guinea pig.
Only one man is desperate enough to apply for the job - a semi-literate, angry wife-basher.

SUN 14:20 Jeremy Raison - Cuckoo (Omnibus) (m000596m)
After the death of his mother, Jennifer, in November 2017, the writer Jeremy Raison found letters, diaries, divorce transcripts and an unpublished manuscript.
This sparked an unexpected journey unravelling some of the mystery of his late mother's troubled childhood. The youngest of four children, Jennifer was kept away from school until she was a teenager, and educated by a nurse who would gradually take the place of her mother.
Set between the late 1920s and early 1940s, Cuckoo explores the story of Jennifer and her mother Theo.
Married at 19 to a wealthy politician, Harold Eastleigh, Theo was said to be suffering from anxiety after the birth of her fourth child. After a period in hospital, Theo returned to the family home accompanied by one of the nurses, Miss Land. In the years to follow Miss Land would become a permanent feature in the family home, eventually leading to Theo and her husband divorcing. Miss Land become the second Mrs Eastleigh and young Jennifer's stepmother.
Did Theo suffer from post-natal depression before it was widely acknowledged as a condition? Was Harold simply unable to cope with an illness he knew little about, or was he under pressure to keep his family trouble out of the public eye? Brought up in this unsettling environment what effect would it have on young Jennifer?
Although some names and details have been changed this drama is based on a true story.
Omnibus of five parts.

SUN 15:30 Bryan Ferry's Jazz Age (b03kpy59)
In 1955 at the age of ten, Bryan Ferry developed a passion for jazz music.
Listening to his radio in Washington, County Durham, he was transported from rural North East England to 1920s New Orleans and Cotton Club, New York. British Trad Jazz was booming, with Humphrey Lyttelton, Chris Barber and Ken Collier offering a gateway to the 'yellow cocktail' music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker.
Now Bryan has returned to his earliest musical love with 'The Jazz Age', a record that remakes and remodels some of his biggest Roxy Music hits in the style of instrumental 20s jazz standards.
Bryan takes us back to his first concert at Newcastle City Hall to see the Chris Barber band and reveals how a performance of St Louis Blues caught his imagination. Trombonist Chris Barber describes how he brought music from the Deep South to rapturous British audiences.
Newcastle music historian Chris Phipps traces the mythical connection between the Mississippi and the Tyne, while Bryan shares his memories of a vibrant, modernist city where he studied fine art. The city still shows traces of its jazz heritage, including J G Windows, the record shop where Bryan bought his 78s including the Charlie Parker Quintet's EP whose solos he learnt by heart.
It wasn't just the jazz age of the 20s that inspired Bryan, but its literature too. He recently contributed to the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby, the film of one of his favourite novels.
With live recordings from his recent UK tour with The Bryan Ferry Jazz Orchestra, Bryan reflects on Roxy Music's early years and explains how his grounding in jazz helped him lead one of the most influential British bands of all time.

Episode 1. And So It Begins
Struggling musician and successful delivery driver Andrew O'Neill has inadvertently opened a portal to another dimension in their flat. This is a very bad thing. A million demons have flooded through and they're getting in everyone's way. A comedy about being stuck between worlds - human and demon, millennials and boomers. This is the first narrative comedy starring a non-binary character.
Written by Andrew O'Neill and Tom DeVille and narrated by writer and graphic novelist Alan Moore
Episode One - And So it Begins.
Andrew has inadvertently opened a portal to another dimension and a thousand demons flooded into London and parts of Leeds. That was a year ago and, although people are pretty much getting used to them, they're really getting in the way.

Not only that, their friend and landlord Pad (Sanjeev Kohli) wants to sell the flat Andrew shares with their partner Gabriella (Jen Brister) and Andrew enlists their sister's help (Carly Smallman) to change his mind. Tell Me a Storycorps
In 2003 the radio producer David Isay had an idea - to ask Americans one simple question: "Tell me about your life", and let everyone hear the answer.
But he knew people tell it best to a single interested party. So when he set up StoryCorps, with its Storybooths across the States, he arranged things so that everyone who visits the booths has to be accompanied by someone else. It's not recording for posterity; it's a conversation with a friend or relative, which allows for an intimacy and spontaneity that's unusual in oral history recording. Dubbed 'The conversation of a lifetime', the stories are available on-line and are used in documentaries on NPR. They are all archived in the Library of Congress, and Isay has quoted from many in his book about the project.
At Liverpool John Moores' University media students were inspired by the StoryCorps approach to record pairs of people telling each other: The Thing I've Never Told Anyone. They found themselves drawn in, given the opportunity to ask family and friends questions they'd never previously had time to. Isay emphasises this aspect of StoryCorps: how it creates a space for interaction in our time-poor lives.
The method seems to get results. But some oral historians have questioned whether they have lasting value. At the British Library, Oral History Curator Rob Perks says he often finds them sentimental and believes they lack the objective rigour of the traditional oral history interview.
Simon Garfield, who has drawn on the Mass Observation Diaries for his own books, compares StoryCorps with traditional oral history and asks whether, now we all possess the means to record our lives, those recordings are still of value and worth keeping.

TUE 14:30 The Manchester Ballads (b06fkm2g)
The folk singer Eliza Carthy visits Chetham's Library in Manchester to find out about 19th-century broadside ballads, and to see if she can find a new song to perform.
She is joined by Andrew Biswell, Professor of English at Manchester Metropolitan University, who is an advocate of the cultural value of the ballads, which were printed on a single sheet and sold on the streets of Manchester. She meets Michael Powell, Librarian of Chetham's Library, which is one of the oldest public libraries in the English-speaking world, and he tells her more about the collections of ballads there.
Many of the ballads reflect the Irish community in Manchester and she goes to the site of Little Ireland with Professor Brian Maidment to find out more about the conditions there. Eliza also has a go at printing a ballad herself, with help from Graham Moss at the Incline Press in Oldham.
She talks to Jennifer Reid, the self-styled 'pre-eminent broadside balladress of the Manchester region', who has collaborated with the artist Jeremy Deller. Jennifer and Jeremy describe their work on his exhibition at the recent Venice Biennale which includes some of the ballads. Eliza asks her guests about their favourites then chooses one of her own to sing.

St Catharine’s College, Cambridge
A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from St Catharine's College, Cambridge, with specialist subjects including Geography, French and Veterinary Medicine and questions ranging from French gender to horse teeth via James Bond and Dick Dastardly.
The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Ed Sheeran. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.
Other Universities featured in this series include Royal Holloway University of London, Aberdeen, Plymouth, Brighton and Oxford Brookes.

The Star-Spangled Banner
America's national anthem was written by a lawyer, Francis Scott Key, after watching the British navy bombing Fort McHenry in 1814.
It was set to an English social men's club song and recognized as the national anthem in 1889. Notoriously difficult to sing, and traditionally played at public sports events and orchestral concerts, the anthem has inspired emotion and attracted controversy.
We hear from
Dr John Carlos who along with Dr Tommie Smith, raised their fists on the Olympic podium in the Mexico City Olympics in 1968 as the anthem was played
Jose Feliciano who sang the anthem at the 1968 World series and provoked criticism
Conrad Netting IV who discovered the truth about his fighter pilot father's history which led him to a cemetery in Normandy
Writer Crista Cloutier who associated it with President Obama's election
Members of the Coldstream Guards band who played the anthem at the changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace the day after 9/11
And Leon Hendrix, Jimi's brother, who was in the army at the time of Woodstock, and was put on 'potato peeling duty' because of the 'dishonourable' version his brother had played.

WED 14:30 Juggling Chainsaws with Archaos (b00tmtxs)
Chainsaws, fork lift trucks and semtex - In the 1980s the French ripped into the traditional circus format with a demented vitality that outraged authorities across the UK.
Archaos were the creation of Pierrot Bidon, "part gypsy, part street urchin, very hairy" according to Mark Borkowski. He was their British publicist, and saw it as his job to get them out of the cultural pages and onto the front pages instead.
"The Human Circus Hides Sick Secrets" - a typical tabloid headline that followed Archaos wherever they went. As a result local councils banned them again and again, a cunning ploy to sell huge numbers of tickets wherever they went.
In Juggling Chainsaws with Archaos, presenter Miles Warde tracks down the British participants who made Archaos more successful here than anywhere else - including their producer Adrian Evans, and performers like Mischa Eligoloff who moved from backstage to fire-eater, hiccuped during a performance, and felt all his paraffin enter his lungs.
Or as Pierrot Bidon used to say, "A life without danger is not a life; a show without danger is not a show."

Mark Radcliffe looks back at the life and career of comic Norman Evans.

Edible Dormouse and Peacock Butterfly
Hugh Dennis and Amanda Abbington star as an edible dormouse and a peacock butterfly as they reveal the truth about life in a draughty old attic in a house in Amersham.
Written and introduced by Lynne Truss.
Edible Dormouse ...... Hugh Dennis
Peacock Butterfly ...... Amanda Abbington
The Edible Dormouse is no Common Dormouse. He is Russian and extremely serious-minded. He is obsessed with answering the question, "Why are we here?" both the philosophical question and the literal one. No answer satisfies him. So he has reached his own conclusion, which involves secret agents and a submarine. "I may be rare, cute-looking, and of indisputable foreign origin, but I am not stupid." He is planning a meeting with his fellow Edible Dormice to discuss their next move. He knows this won't be easy. The others think he is mad. Top of the agenda is what they should call themselves. "Imagine how it feels to be one of the only zoological species in existence whose very name says, "Have you ever thought of eating me?"
The Peacock Butterfly is youthful, intelligent, and ever so concerned with being brave and sensible about mortality. Having been born the previous year, she is re-visiting the attic before dying. "I remember when I first came in, I thought hello, this wouldn't be a bad place to pop off, when the time comes." But trying to be brave about her inevitable end is much harder than she expects, "Well, I'm sorry to say that for some completely inexplicable reason I totally lost it at the sycamore! I mean what's wrong with me? " But as she settles down to die, a sudden thought changes everything ...

What happens when your Dad's an African-American soul star and your Mum's a music-loving girl from a Sheffield council estate? Are your roots on the terraces at a Sheffield United match, or in the stylings of a Spike Lee film?
For writer and photographer Johny Pitts, whose parents met in the heyday of Northern Soul on the dance floor of Sheffield’s legendary King Mojo Club, how he navigates his black roots has always been an issue.
Not being directly connected to the Caribbean or West African diaspora culture, all he was told at school was that his ancestors were slaves. In this programme, Johny heads off to the USA, to trace his father's musical migration and to tell an alternative story of Black British identity.
From Pittsmore in Sheffield, to Bedford Stuyvesant – ‘Bed-Stuy’ - in Brooklyn, and all the way down to South Carolina where his grandmother picked cotton, Johny Pitts makes a journey of self-discovery.
On the way, he meets author Caryl Phillips, Kadija a half-sister he never knew, and historian Bernard Powers. He visits the Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn and the Bush River Missionary Baptist Church, in Newberry, South Carolina. He tracks down a whole host of long-lost cousins, and talks to Pulitzer winning writer Isabel Wilkerson.
Johny Pitts' journey shines a light on the shadows of his ancestry, revealing stories and culture that bring a new understanding of his own mixed race identity and history.

Nikesh Shukla on the undefeated Muslim wrestler the Great Gama
Ghulam Mohammad, or the Great Gama Pehlwan as he was more commonly known, was a Muslim wrestler born into a Kashmir family in India in 1878.
When writer Nikesh Shukla first came across him in a book at the airport, he thought he must be a fictional character- the stories seemed so far-fetched. Gama reportedly drank 10 litres of milk and ate six chickens every day. He also grappled with 40 wrestlers a day and did 5000 squats. Surely this was an action hero figure and not a real man?
But Gama was real with a career spanning over 50 years, unbeaten not only in India, but also in England and Europe. In 1910 he was dubbed the strongest man in the world. And the press feared his strength might inspire rebellion in India, then under British rule.
Joining Nikesh to tell the story of the Great Gama is Dr Majid Sheikh.
The presenter is Matthew Parris and the producer is Perminder Khatkar.

It’s his terrified, emotional and hilarious response to the climate crisis - what it means, how it makes us feel, what if anything we can do about it, and whether any of it is funny.

Tom was nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer in 2015 and for the main prize in 2016, and hosted his own daily late-night comedy show for ABC, Tonightly with Tom Ballard. He can be heard regularly on the smash-hit satirical podcast The Bugle, and his work is "unrelenting and uproarious" (Chortle), "brave, biting, ballsy and ultimately, brilliant" (Time Out), "multi-dimensional and multi-layered, adding twist upon twist and full of little parcels of surprises" (Beyond The Joke), and "engaged, conscientious and consistently, archly funny, Ballard is precisely the sort of political commentator the world needs" (The Scotsman).
