SAT 02:30 Old Photographs Fever - The Search for China's Pictured Past (b01kkntb)
Old Photos Fever' is sweeping China, where people are encountering their photographic history for the first time, piecing together a past destroyed in Mao's Cultural Revolution.
Sales of books and magazines filled with historical photographs have rocketed. China's turbulent history in the 20th century meant that archives of all kinds were destroyed. People also destroyed their own - now dangerously bourgeois - family albums. Nearly a century of photographic history was erased.
The photographs that do survive were mostly taken by foreigners, living in or visiting China, who took them out of the country to safety. Professor Robert Bickers at the University of Bristol is leading the search to collect and digitise these photographs in order to restore a historical vision of China which is unfamiliar and fascinating to its citizens now.
One of the jewels in the collection is the work of Fu Bingchang, a senior Chinese diplomat, whose access to the elite of Chinese society in the first half of the 20th century and whose talent as a photographer make for a unique and beautiful set of images.
The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 prompted Chinese politicians to pursue an ambitious policy of historical education, to counteract a perceived lack of knowledge in young people about China's past. New museums are now huge tourist attractions in China and the desire for photographs has arisen from this resurgence of interest in the nation's history.
This fascinating documentary brings a new and surprising insight into China's past and present.

SAT 09:00 Last Post for the Men of Letters (b097lpnp)
Russell Davies unearths from the radio and TV archives the voices of men and women who were, for many years, a staple of the broadcasting diet.
Some, but by no means all, have university pedigree but all have a breath-taking breadth of learning and the facility to deliver it, albeit to an audience who were prepared to give them time and were, it would appear, happy to be dazzled by learning.
Russell's examples from the Men and Women of letters trove is gathered round his very personal association with John Gross, of whom he writes:
'In 1969 an author in his early thirties published his first book. The Rise and Fall of the Man of Letters won the Duff Cooper prize, delighted the reading public, introduced them to the name of John Gross, and marked the beginning of what would be an illustrious and fascinating literary career. It ended with his death on 10 January 2011, a great sorrow for the many people who loved and admired John.
No doubt I read at the time, but had forgotten until coming across it again, since I quite lack his total recall, something he wrote here in 1983, an entertaining review of a biography of Sir George Lewis, the famous and immensely influential Victorian solicitor whose clients included the Prince of Wales. In an aside, Gross gently wondered why the biographer hadn't mentioned that Lewis 'appears by name in Conan Doyle's "The Illustrious Client" — a pretty broad clue to the client's identity'. Yes, he had read everything, high and low.
Since his death, I've thought often about John, and reread him. The breadth of his reading and his memory made him the perfect anthologist, and he edited half a dozen Oxford Books of ..., from Aphorisms to Parodies. He also wrote three books of his own, and I wish he had written more. Shylock is a learned and highly original study of that singularly problematic character and his play, while A Double Thread is a beautiful short memoir of Gross's London childhood, 'double' because both English and Jewish. But I now see that the defining point came with his brilliant first book.
Although he and Kingsley Amis were disparate personalities, to say the least, Gross would have shared Amis's contempt for anything which 'makes a statement', and his disdain for the idea of 'importance'. But I believe that The Rise and Fall is a truly important book. It wasn't just an item on Gross's list of publications, it was part of his own story, and it made a statement of its own: a repudiation of the attempted monopoly of literary criticism by 'the university' and the larger academic appropriation of our common culture.

Joni Mitchell Taught Me How to Feel
Music writer and broadcaster Ann Powers explores Joni Mitchell’s impact on her fans and on songwriting.
"Even the songs of hers I’ve heard a thousand times can still give me the weird feeling that she knows me personally," she says.
Ann considers what it is about her music that speaks to people in this way. And how does this emotional connectedness square with an artist who has constantly shape-shifted, who is full of contradictions? She’s a master lyricist who dislikes most poetry. Her words challenged who women were supposed to be, who they could be, and yet she bristled against feminism. And when she’s had such a powerful effect on so many listeners, why has she only had one top 20 hit?
Through excerpts from live BBC recordings from the late 1960s and 70s, and the conversations Joni Mitchell recorded in the same period with broadcaster Malka Marom, we travel across a decade of her music.
From the familiar territory of songs like Woodstock, we reach the wilder, exploratory sounds of her late 70s work, via some of her most critically acclaimed albums from earlier that decade - Blue, Court and Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira.
Writers and critics Linda Grant, Sean O’Hagan, Jessica Hopper and Barney Hoskyns reflect on the rapid evolution of Joni Mitchell’s musical and lyrical approach, alongside the memories of some of those who’ve been closest to her: songwriter and former lover Graham Nash, bassist and ex-husband Larry Klein, and longstanding friend Malka Marom.
With thanks to Malka Marom and the Thomas Fisher Rare Books Library at the University of Toronto, for sharing clips of Joni Mitchell’s conversation with Malka Marom.

Out of the Blue
True stories told live in the USA: Jay Allison introduces tales where surprises, unanticipated lessons and plot twists abound.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

SUN 13:00 The House by the Lake: A Story of Germany (Omnibus) (b06tg6fm)
In summer 1993, Thomas Harding travelled to Germany with his grandmother to visit a small house by a lake on the outskirts of Berlin.
It had been her ‘soul place’ as a child, she said – a holiday home for her and her family, but much more – a sanctuary, a refuge. In the 1930s, she had been forced to leave the house, fleeing to England as the Nazis swept to power. The trip, she said, was a chance to see it one last time, to remember it as it was.
But the house had changed. Nearly 20 years later Thomas returned to the house. It was government property now, derelict, and soon to be demolished. It was his legacy, one that had been loved, abandoned, fought over – a house his grandmother had desired until her death. Could it be saved? And should it be saved?
He began to make tentative enquiries – speaking to neighbours and villagers, visiting archives, unearthing secrets that had lain hidden for decades.
Slowly he began to piece together the lives of the five families who had lived there.. All had made the house their home, and all – bar one – had been forced out. The house had been the site of domestic bliss and of contentment, but also of terrible grief and tragedy. It had weathered storms, fires and abandonment, witnessed violence, betrayals and murders, had withstood the trauma of a world war, and the dividing of a nation.
As the story of the house began to take shape, Thomas realised that there was a chance to save it – but in doing so, he would have to resolve his own family’s feelings towards their former homeland – and a hatred handed down through the generations.

SUN 15:30 Yellowstone Wolves (m0014yhf)
In 2005, Howard Stableford visited Yellowstone National Park in the United States to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the return of the wolf.
Having been persecuted to extinction in the early 20th century, wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone in 1995. It took many years to make it happen and even today there are many people unhappy that wolves are back in the area.
The project has been very successful and wolf numbers peaked in 2004 at 170 wolves.
While the wolves bring pleasure to the many thousands of tourists who come to the park each year to watch them, the local farmers and hunters are concerned about the wolves. With the territories of the wolf packs expanding, wolves stray beyond the boundaries of the park onto cattle pasture.
Farmers are compensated financially for wolves having killed their cattle but it has to be proved that a wolf was to blame.
The wolves mainly eat elk and thousands of elk are found in the park and outside of it. The elk are also the prey of local hunters and "outfitter" businesses, as companies offering elk hunting are called.
They feel the elk herds are being effected by the wolves and the licences they get to shoot a certain number of wolves are being reduced which they say is impacting on their income.

4. The Guilty Ghost
Can fire investigator Quentin Barnaby determine if a fire aboard ship is an accident or arson? Stars Robert Beatty. From 1962.
A 1962 drama series set off the well-beaten detection track. It's writer Philip Levene talked about his inspiration: "I have always been fascinated by fire......while writing two plays [Untimely Death, Weather For Murder] I was struck by the wide variety of intriguing ideas in a field that seemed (bar the obvious insurance fraud) comparatively untouched to date. Personally I have had my fill of court-room dramas, endless bodies and Private Eyes, but the puzzle of the charred remains of a burnt-out building intrigue me. The motivations of arson are numerous: greed, financial reverses destruction of evidence, revenge".
It stars noted Canadian radio, television and screen actor, Robert Beatty (1909 - 1992). Beatty shared the screen with James Mason in Odd Man Out (1947), Gregory Peck in Horatio Hornblower (1951) and Richard Burton in Where Eagles Dare (1968), as well as playing the Lester Powell's Irish private detective, Philip Odell on the BBC Light Programme from 1947 to 1961.

The Light Music Festival
Although many Radio 4 listeners grew up tuning in to light orchestral music, it's now largely been forgotten. Most of us will be still be familiar with at least one very famous piece of light music: 'By The Sleepy Lagoon' - better known as the theme tune to 'Desert Island Discs' and composed by Eric Coates.
When BBC Radio was much slimmer than it is today - made up of just the Home Service, the Light Programme and the Third Programme - listeners tuned in to hear a live concert for the Festival of Light Music. it began in 1953 and was broadcast every June.
With the disappearance of the Light Programme in 1967 when it split into Radios 1 and 2, light music began to disappear from the airwaves. Eventually its only home was a single slot 'Friday Night is Music Night'. So why did such a popular style of music fade away?
The music journalist and broadcaster Paul Morley uses BBC archive to explore light music at its peak, including interviews with some of the major composers of British light music - Eric Coates, Ronald Binge and Ernest Tomlinson. He traces its decline, and looks at its possible resurgence in 2011, with events like the 'Light Fantastic Festival'.
Paul travels to Preston to meet Ernest Tomlinson and takes a tour around the Light Music Society's remarkable archive of thousands of pieces of light music - all rescued by Tomlinson and his daughter Hilary after the BBC and music publishers threw it away.
Paul also meets Christopher Austin at the Royal Academy of Music and the young conductor John Wilson, who is passionate about light music: for him, this music is not about nostalgia but beautifully written miniatures of orchestral music.

1. Not Just Seasoning
It’s easy to take salt for granted - its abundance on supermarket shelves, coupled with the development of refrigeration and freezing for our food, means we can all too readily overlook its vital and multiple role in our history.
Steph McGovern sets out to explain this role. She hears how it has taken root in our language, visits a chemistry class to find out about how it’s produced and its importance to our physical wellbeing, talks with history professor Peter Wallenstein about the unexpected importance of salt in military strategy right up until the 20th century, and also Pierre Laszlo who explains how salt not only helped shape economies and cities like Salzburg, Munich and Venice, but also played a crucial role in revolutions across France, America and India.
Steph also visits a graveyard and hears talk of the tradition of sin eating at Welsh wakes, an illustration of salt’s widespread place in religion and superstition across the world. Finally she talks with a commodities expert to discover just how much salt is worth today - significantly less than the days it was traded like for like with gold.

Newcastle University
A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from Newcastle University with specialist subjects including Physiological Sciences, Sociology and Media and Communication and questions ranging from Bach and benzene rings to Mills and Boon and Mick Jagger.
Recorded on location at a different University each week, pitting three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of TV, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.

Bach Cello Suite No 1 in G
Bach's Cello Suite No I in G is one of the most frequently performed and recognisable solo compositions ever written for cello. Yet it was virtually unknown for almost two hundred years until the Catalan cellist, Pablo Casals discovered an edition in a thrift shop in Barcelona. Casals became the first to record it and the suites are now cherished by musicians across the globe.
World-renowned cellist Steven Isserlis describes his relationship with the piece and why it still surprises and excites him. Fellow cellists Richard Jenkinson and Jane Salmon talk about the challenge of playing it and we hear from the Dominic Martens, a member of the National Youth Orchestra and his teacher, Nick Jones as they explore the piece together.
Garden designer Julie Moir Messervy describes how Yo-Yo Ma's recording inspired her to design The Toronto Music Garden and doctor Heidi Kimberly explains why she chose the piece for her wedding and why she believes the suite to have healing powers.
While historian and author, Eric Siblin, reveals the extraordinary history of the suites and why some still argue that they was written by Bach's second wife Anna Magdalena.

Steph goes on to address the issue of salt and health, hearing from a campaign group promoting the lowering of salt consumption down to 6 grammes a day through schemes such as reducing the number of holes in chip shop salt shakers.
Finally Steph heads down the salt mine at Winsford in Cheshire, with 160 miles of tunnels and an off-shoot storage facility that capitalises on the ideal humidity by storing everything from grand pianos and barrel organs to unwanted waxworks.

Episode 3
Everyone craves a place where their mind and body are not applied to a particular task. The nearest faraway place. Somewhere for drifting and lighting upon strange thoughts which don't have to be shooed into context, but which can be followed like balloons escaping onto the air.
Late at night, in the dark and in a bunk bed, your tired mind can wander.
This is the nearest faraway place for Patrick Marber and Peter Curran. Here they endeavour to get the heart of things in an entertainingly vague and indirect way. This is not the place for typical male banter.
From under the bed clothes, they wrestle life's challenges. This week, they discuss childhood sightings of wigs, the revival of the sedan chair to make Britain great again and archive of film legend Bette Davis destroying an interviewer.

6. Frozen Alibi
Can fire investigator Quentin Barnaby determine if an office blaze was an accident or arson?

Thus says Will from California. One of 55 children of Citi Private Bank's richest clients where you need at least $10 million to qualify for a chequebook.
Jim White, journalist, broadcaster and author, spent a week mingling with these scions of the super-rich in the comforting old-world charm of London's Dorchester Hotel. Citi's motive for putting on a lavish week of contemplation and recreation was not entirely a philanthropic one. Research shows most inheritors tend to switch banks. They hired some of the finest minds in the financial world to advise this next generation of world-class wealth on how to keep it, spend it or give it away.
But did the so called "Next Gens" take any notice; were they more interested in hooking up with that blonde from Lithuania, than blazing a trail in the world?

Mark Carwardine on Douglas Adams
"Imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, this is an interesting world I find myself in - fits me rather neatly, don't you think?"
Douglas Noel Adams wasn't even fifty when he died in 2001, but his imagination had already roamed far. He created The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Meaning of Liff and several episodes of Doctor Who, plus the Dirk Gently character and Last Chance to See.
Nominating him is his co-writer on Last Chance to See, the zoologist Mark Carwardine. Mark's role, Adams said later, was to be the one who knew what he was talking about. "My role was to be an extremely ignorant non-zoologist to whom everything that happened would come as a complete surprise."
Joining Mark Carwardine and Matthew Parris in the bar where this was recorded is Douglas Adams's biographer, Jem Roberts.

Paretsky says of her Warshawski: "I was troubled by the way women were portrayed, [in detective fiction] they always seemed either evil or powerless. I thought it was time for a tough, smart, likeable female private investigator".
Kathleen Turner also starred in the same role in the 1991 film 'VI Warshawski'.

Testing Times
It's the day after Lucy's 18th birthday, and her parents aren't happy, and not only because she took that bottle of rum from their drinks cabinet. They think she is wasting her life being part of the resistance, so unless she can pass her A-levels they're going to stop her coming to the meetings.
Does it really take a village to raise a child? Or will they make things worse?
Series two of Eddie Robson's sitcom about an alien race that have noticed that those all-at-once invasions of Earth never work out that well. So they've locked the small Buckinghamshire village of Cresdon Green behind an impenetrable force field in order to study human behaviour and decide if Earth is worth invading.
The only inhabitant who seems to be bothered by their new alien overlord is Katrina Lyons, who was only home for the weekend to borrow the money for a deposit for a flat when the force field went up.
So along with Lucy Alexander (the only teenager in the village, willing to rebel against whatever you've got) she forms The Resistance - slightly to the annoyance of her parents Margaret and Richard who wish she wouldn't make so much of a fuss, and much to the annoyance of Field Commander Uljabaan who, alongside his unintelligible minions and The Computer (his hyperintelligent supercomputer), is trying to actually run the invasion.

On The Waterfront
Paul Gambaccini returns with the series about how some of the greatest Best Picture Oscar winning films were made, and what they tell us about the history of the time.
The 27th Academy Awards, for the films released in 1954, were dominated by ON THE WATERFRONT, a gritty, black and white masterpiece, which takes us down to the highly unionised New Jersey docks, then controlled by the mob.
A real tale of corruption and murder on the waterfront is transformed into a fiction - as a simple minded ex-boxer, played by Marlon Brando, wrestles with his conscience as he turns informer to win the girl he loves.
ON THE WATERFRONT not only gives us the most famous scene ever to take place in the back of a taxi, ("I coulda been a contender!"), it also showcases the talents of director Elia Kazan, and an astonishingly strong support cast - Rod Steiger, Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb and newcomer Eva Marie Saint- Method Acting at its height.
It also marks the end of the powerful team of director Elia Kazan and Method actor Marlon Brando - blown apart by Brando's horror at Kazan's decision to testify in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee, HUAC - then investigating the red-scare in Hollywood.
Is it a coincidence that ON THE WATERFRONT tells the story of a man who informs - snitches on his friends - but holds the moral high ground?
With a rich mix of archive and original interviews with actors, screen writers and film critics, and a revelatory interview with Thomas Hanley, a real life longshoreman who played Brando's young friend Tommy back in 1954, Paul Gambaccini presents "And The Academy Award Goes to... On The Waterfront."

FRI 22:30 Mark Watson's Live Address to the Nation (b016x241)
Faith
Mark Watson continues his quest to improve the world, nimbly assisted by Tim Key and Tom Basden.
As broadcast live in November 2011 - Mark invites the audience join in via tweets and messages to work out how we can all make the world a better place.
Mark asks the big questions that are crucial to our understanding of ourselves and society - in a dynamic and thought-provoking new format he opens the floor to the live audience and asks them to jump into the conversation via tweets and messages to work out how we can all make the world a better place.
This time Mark asks - What is faith? One of the most used, and feared, words of modern times. Yet these days, it's often used derisively about religious beliefs and so on. We look at odd things done in the name of 'faith', versus the obvious merits of having faith (belief that England will eventually win World Cup, ability to ride out difficult marriages). Should we be more credulous and believe people like estate agents? Or LESS credulous and destroy our TV sets altogether in case we accidentally absorb lies?
