"Success is not something that can be passed on. The greatest of people, the most successful of people perhaps will never be able to teach their children or their colleagues, to be as successful as they were."
Even though the Bollywood star didn't get to meet him in life, he fondly remembers sitting under a statue of his idol at the national stadium in New Delhi while he was growing up. Shah Rukh recalls that's where his interest in learning more about the great Dhyan Chand began.
He goes onto explain he decided to play the role of hockey coach Kabir Khan in the film Chak De! India because he wanted the world to share his passion for the game.
Finally, Shah Rukh discusses how Dhyan's inspiration stretches wider than sport, saying "just in case you can't achieve success in the field you want to, there are always going to be opportunities which will allow you do so later on. So don't give up."

Bonnie Greer tells the story of one of the most famous sporting contests of all time - a boxing match in June 1938 between the American Joe Louis and the German Max Schmeling.
The fight took on massive international, social and cultural significance and millions of people around the globe listened to the contest on their radios, making it the largest radio event in history.
Schmeling had shocked the world two years earlier when he defeated Louis and became the toast of Germany, with Hitler and Goebbels among his fans. A rematch was inevitable. For the first time, most of white America was behind a black fighter and Jews in the US and Europe, all too aware of the Nazi threat, were also cheering Louis.
With the world on the brink of war, it was projected as a contest between different social and racial ideals, a showdown between democracy and totalitarianism.
President Roosevelt told Louis, "Joe we need muscles like yours to defeat Germany."

Gary Barlow
From Elton John to Yes.
Musician and Take That lead singer Gary Barlow shares his castaway choices with Lauren Laverne.
Gary has written more than a dozen chart-topping songs, and has received six Ivor Novello awards including the award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.
Born in Cheshire in 1971, his interest in music was sparked at an early age by a child’s keyboard. Aged 10, he saw Depeche Mode on Top of the Pops, prompting the desire to take to the stage himself. He wrote 'A Million Love Songs', which later became a Top 10 hit for Take That, in his bedroom when he was 15. By this time he was a regular performer in a Labour club just across the Welsh border, where he cut his teeth playing the organ and singing.
By 18, he was so good at writing songs that he successfully auditioned for a place in the group which became Take That. They went on to be one of the most successful bands of all time, winning a devoted audience with tracks such as 'Back For Good', 'Everything Changes' and 'Pray'.
When they broke up in early 1996, helplines were set up to assuage their fans’ feelings of loss and grief. In 2005, Take That reformed, with Robbie Williams re-joining them for a spell in 2010, and – in some form or other – the band has kept going.

SUN 13:00 The Red-Haired Woman by Orhan Pamuk (Omnibus) (b09pw24h)
Episode 1
The Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk explores the complex layers of father-son relationships through the apparently simple story of a young man apprenticed to a well-digger on the outskirts of Istanbul.
With this vivid image of digging towards the centre of the earth at the heart of the story, he brings together eastern and western myths and legends to look at what is really meant by authority and rebellion. Can anyone ever escape their fate?
Cem Çelik is a "little gentleman", the son of a leftist Istanbul pharmacist whose politics take precedence over parenthood. During one of his father's lengthy and regular disappearances, 16 year-old Cem gives up his holiday job guarding his uncle's orchard and apprentices himself to a master well-digger, Mahmut. They set about digging a well to provide water for a local businessman's factory.
Heraclitus said that truth lies at the bottom of a well. The wells of Pamuk's Turkey are something quite sinister - here, guilt and shame lurk in the darkness, forever threatening to come spewing up into the light. The novel turns on Cem's encounter with the red-haired woman of the title and a subsequent act by the well that stains the rest of his life.
As Cem accepts the warm but irascible Mahmut as a surrogate father, and Mahmut slowly begins to regard Cem with a fatherly affection, the storytelling begins. First Cem listens intently to Mahmut's tales, then is himself invited to speak.
Myth and folklore pervade the novel, and throw the events of Cem's life into sharp focus, against the backdrop of the ever expanding 21st century Istanbul.

D for Dexter: Coming Home
Skye's been trying to get hold of her little brother Dex for ages and all she gets is his voice on Ed's answerphone message. Her mum Jak is ghosting her as well.
Two weeks is a long time when you're nine.
Skye's just turned eighteen and she's busy working twelve hour shifts in her job as a carer, saving up so she and Dex can have the best Christmas ever. Won't be hard. Bar's not set very high. She's always been the one to look out for Dexter, all his life. So where is he?
In the final chapter in this extraordinary story of ordinary life, things are changing for the King family. They still live in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, but Skye has moved out and got herself a job. Jak says she's not drinking but she's definitely up to something. Ed's impossible to get hold of. And Dexter is nowhere to be found.
A heart-breakingly brave, funny and beautiful story, the concluding episode of a series that was originally part of programming for the BBC Children in Need Appeal on Radio 4.

1. Le Miroir
Celia, an aristocratic young Englishwoman, moves to Paris to embark on a career as an artist. But time shifts in the looking glass and entraps her.
Series of strange stories by Robert Aickman.
Read by Tim McInnerny.
Born in 1914, Aickman was the son of architect William Arthur Aickman and worked briefly with his father, a notable eccentric. The younger Aickman was a man of diverse interests (co-founder of the Inland Waterways Association and chair of the London Opera Society included) and did not publish his first stories until 1951, in the collection We Are For The Dark. Half the stories in that collection were written by Aickman and half of them by Elizabeth Jane Howard, his lover at the time.
Aickman would go on to publish 48 “strange stories”, the term he would use for his own works.
Although the grandson of horror writer Richard Marsh, (The Beetle -1897), Aickman never became a full-time writer.
But his long-standing membership of the Society for Psychical Research and The Ghost Club is testament to his fascination with the occult, and his mystery stories constantly reshape time in unorthodox ways.
Since he died in 1981, Aickman’s reputation as a writer has grown.

MON 14:00 Wintering by Katherine May (m00127f5)
Episode 1
‘Some winters happen in the sun,’ writes Katherine May. ‘This particular one began on a blazing day in early September, a week before my fortieth birthday.’ When her husband becomes dangerously ill, it coincides with a moment in May’s life when she is facing professional and personal stress and an uncertain future, and it ushers in a period of what she calls ‘wintering’. ‘Everybody winters at one time or another; some winter over and over again,’ she explains. ‘Winter is a season in the cold, a fallow period in life when you’re cut off from the world, feeling rejected, sidelined, blocked from progress.’
Described by The Observer’s reviewer as ‘a reading cure’ and ‘a tale of hard-won celebration’, May's book is an honest, reflective, sometimes humorous account of her struggle to deal with her own bad times. She considers the healing power of rest and retreat and the consolations of nature, exploring the many ways in which we experience winter, both seasonal and personal, and offering some strategies for weathering the dark times in the year and our own lives.
Katherine May’s other books include The Electricity of Every Living Thing, her memoir of being autistic, and two novels, The Whitstable High Tide Swimming Club and Burning Out. She is the editor of The Best, Most Awful Job, an anthology of essays about motherhood, and her essays and journalism have been widely published in the UK and America. She lives by the sea in Whitstable.

MON 14:30 The Art of Darkness (b018b8ct)
Richard Coles travels in the dead of winter up to the Lofoten Island in Norway - where the Northern lights and the extraordinary colours of winter darkness draw spellbound artists to live and work. Lofoten, on the very edge of Norway's Fjords, is home to both art and artists in abundance. Every turning on the road has a sign pointing to a gallery, and as Richard observes, "Looking out the window is like looking at an abstract painting - streaks of brilliant pastel colours across the dark sky and sea".
Shops display paintings and weavings, inspired by the grandeur of winter at its wildest. The natural surroundings - the sea, triangular fish-drying racks, the jagged snow peaked mountains, and the darkness, illuminated by the dancing lights of the Aurora Borealis - provide rich inspiration. The peninsula has even attracted international artists, such as Anthony Gormley and Anish Kapoor, to contribute inspired pieces of work to the striking landscape.
Richard Coles travels to the frozen landscape of extreme beauty to meet the artists inspired by both the cold and the dark; artists like Scott Thoe, who breaks the ice to swim every morning; his wife Vebjørg Hagene, who creates underwater tapestries; Dagfinn Bakke, whose landscapes feature tiny figures dwarfed by storms, and Yngve Henriksen who grew up on the Islands and felt drawn to return to paint the colours of the landscape he finds so compelling - huge canvases smothered in layered oils and filled with a darkness relieved only by a 'Blue Hour'. The one person who wishes for Spring is Kjell Ove Storvik.

When does 'protection' become 'intrusion'. Few could manage to handle this very serious and troubling subject with humour, but Alfie's compassion and genuine concern for those involved means that he can.
As usual Alfie asks his audience what they would have done in his shoes and hears some of their own true stories.

TUE 14:00 Wintering by Katherine May (m001280n)
Episode 2

TUE 14:30 The Music That Melted (b00y8v0w)
Every year on a frozen fjord in Norway, musicians gather under the full moon, and a canopy of Northern Lights, to perform ice music. Over a weekend, instruments are carved from blocks of ice, and music played in an arena of carved ice blocks to a well wrapped audience, who arrive on cross country skis. Sometimes standing in flurries of snow, sometimes in the light of flame torches, under the northern lights, they listen spellbound (and a bit chilly) to the magical sounds produced by instruments with a short life span - each one as unique and short-lived as a sandcastle.
Richard Coles, ex band member of the 90's pop group The Communards, meets the people who play these instruments, which last only as long as the temperature stays below zero, and has a go himself.
Bill Covitz is the expert ice sculptor who makes a different range of instruments each festival. This year he is creating, for the first time, an Isleik, an ice version of a langeleik, the traditional harp of Norway.
Musicians come from across the globe to try their hands at instruments which require, more often than not, fingerless gloves and good circulation; the ice-sculpted instruments giving off surprising sounds that vary according to the quality of the ice and the temperature.
Richard Coles joins the preparations, to see the creation and the destruction of the music that melted.

A Shropshire Lad
"Into my heart an air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again."
So wrote the poet AE Housman lamenting the loss of his brother in the Boer war in his epic poem A Shropshire Lad. It harks back to a simple idyllic rural way of life that is forever changed at the end of the nineteenth century as hundreds of country boys go off to fight and never return. George Butterworth adapted his words to music in 1913 just before the outbreak of the Great War.
This edition of Soul Music hears from those whose lives continue to be touched by the loss of so many young men between 1914 and 1918. Broadcaster Sybil Ruscoe recalls visiting her Great Uncle's grave in a military cemetery in France with Butterworth's Rhapsody as the soundtrack to her journey.
A concert at Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire where Housman was a pupil remembers the former schoolboys killed in action, and singer Steve Knightley discusses and performs his adaptation of The Lads In Their Hundreds.
The Bishop of Woolwich connects his love of the countryside and Butterworth's music with his father's battered copy of Housman's poems which comforted him while held captive in Singapore during the Second World War.

2. Ego Warrior
Diane Morgan celebrates the life and work of Neil Innes, the music and comedy legend of The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band & The Rutles. A towering talent, occasionally known as the 7th Python & regularly found with a duck on his head. His legacy of music and comedy is rich, inspiring and inspired.
Neil said of his work, “Shakespeare wrote comedies as well as dramas. I’m just like Shakespeare, except with better songs.” His influence permeates modern comedy and his back catalogue is diverse and prolific. Neil wrote and performed anarchic rock with The Bonzos, he penned and performed pitch-perfect pastiches of the Beatles for The Rutles, he appeared in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Monty Python’s Life of Brian and he is one of only two non-Pythons with a writing credit on Monty Python’s Flying Circus – the other being Douglas Adams. He released over 20 albums including How Sweet To Be An Idiot, Innes Book of Records, and Recycled Vinyl Blues. And on top of being comedically and musically gifted, he was also a really nice man. A beautiful, kind, gentle soul. Considered, absurd, and delightful.
We’re celebrating the life, work and absurdist tendencies of Neil Innes in this collage of archive interviews, performances and programmes, conversations with family, friends and fans. Including his wife Yvonne, Stephen Fry, Arthur Smith, bandmates Phil Jackson and Ken Thornton, John Halsey (better known to Rutles fans as Barry Wom), producer Ian Keill, and Michael Palin. In Part Two, Ego Warrior, we open up the Innes Book of Records, follow Neil on his foray into Children’s Television (after all, the Raggy Dolls are dolls like you and me), and we take a look at Neil’s approach to songwriting, and his craft of setting beautiful stories to music.
Neil died on Sunday 29th December 2019. He was 75. At the time of his death, he was working on a new album, and a project called Radio Noir, part-audio memoir, part-experimental work of art, part- exploration of the human brain and you will hear some extracts and some unreleased songs throughout the programme.
Written and produced for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Laura Grimshaw.

Tobacco
Comedian Simon Evans continues his series about the economics of some of the goods - or bads - we are addicted to.
If you crave your daily coffee, can't get by without a cigarette, feel that mid-afternoon slump without your sugar-fix, or can't face an evening without a glass of wine, you are definitely not alone. But have you ever thought about the economics that has made your addiction possible? Who does it profit? And would you want to make some canny investments that take advantage of our human weaknesses?
Simon looks at the economics, history and health issues behind these oh-so-addictive commodities.
This time it's tobacco. It's been called the single biggest avoidable cause of death in the world today yet it has remained an investment goldmine, with a single pound invested in tobacco stocks in 1900 now being worth over 6 million pounds.
Simon speaks to Robert West, Professor of Health Psychology and Director of Tobacco Studios at University College London about current global trends in smoking. He is also joined by economics guru, More Or Less host Tim Harford and the Queen of investment know-how, Merryn Somerset-Webb, as he walks us around the economics of these very familiar commodities and pokes fun at our relationship with them.
Presented by Simon Evans, with Professor Robert West, Tim Harford and Merryn Somerset-Webb.
Written by Simon Evans, Benjamin Partridge and Andy Wolton.
Producer: Claire Jones

Join the staff of Fags, Mags and Bags in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of over 30 years and is a firmly entrenched, friendly presence in the local area. He is joined by his shop sidekick Dave.
Then of course there are Ramesh’s sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business. Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them - whether they like it or not!

THU 14:00 Wintering by Katherine May (m001284w)
Episode 4

THU 14:30 Sheffield - City of Snowless Skiers (b03srgv7)
In 2014, David Goldblatt discoverd the unlikely tale of how our most promising skiers to reach the Sochi Olympics began in a city with no snow, on a plastic material that's "like upturned scrubbing brushes".
In the 2014 Winter Olympics. a new sport debuted, freeskiing, and astonishingly, given the British record in winter sports, we are very good at it. In 2013, the world number one in "slopestyle" skiing was a British 21-year-old with a half-shaved head, called James Woods. He, like a string of other skiers now making their mark internationally, grew up in a non-skiing family in Sheffield.
According to the head coach of the British Freeski team, Pat Sharples - "Every single one of my athletes comes from a working class background... and the majority of my team are from Sheffield." How did this happen?
It is all to do with a patch of land sandwiched between an enormous inner city landfill and a council estate overlooking the city centre. Built in the 1980s, Sheffield Ski Village was one of the best facilities in Europe, in its heyday. But as David discovers, it looks unlikely that this success will ever be repeated again.
Featuring: James 'Woodsy' Woods, British Slopestyle Skier; Katie and Molly Summerhayes, British Slopestyle Skiers; Pat Sharples, Head Coach Team GB Freeski; Simon Ashton, Chairman British Freeski; Cllr Peter Price, Sheffield City Council; Kevin Pullan, owner of Sheffield Ski Village; Mike Rogge, Freeski Reporter; Norman and Molly Gill, founders of Sheffield Sharks

Hertha Ayrton
Helen Arney, self confessed science nerd, stand-up entertainer, and once nicknamed a "geek songstress", tells Matthew Parris why she's chosen Hertha Ayrton (1854-1923), the pioneering Victorian physicist, inventor and suffragette, as her great life.
Ayrton, we hear, was the first woman to be admitted into membership of what is today known as the IET, the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Their archivist Anne Locker knows Ayrton's life and works and fields the questions from Matthew and Helen.
They talk about how Hertha overcame considerable obstacles to be the first woman who was proposed for the fellowship of the Royal Society. Her candidature was refused on the grounds that as a married woman she had no legal existence in British law. This did not stop her from patenting over 20 of her inventions, which included a large electric fan designed to disperse mustard gas from the Trenches during the First World War. Fascinated by electricity, her achievements also ranged across mathematics and physics.
Helen Arney, who's one third of the Festival of the Spoken Nerd, the comedy group that makes science entertaining for audiences, explains why she's championing Ayrton. Hertha's father was a Jewish immigrant, a watchmaker from Poland, who hawked goods at markets. Nonetheless, Hertha was among the first generation of women to study at Girton College, Cambridge.

Brian Gulliver's Travels is a new satirical adventure story from Bill Dare. The series has attracted an excellent cast led by Neil Pearson and award winning star of the RSC's current season, Mariah Gale. Cast includes fantastic actors Tamsin Greig, John Standing, Paul Bhattacharjee, Christopher Douglas, Catherine Shepherd, Vicky Pepperdine, Phil Cornwell, Antonia Campbell Hughes, Jo Bobin and Katherine Jakeways.
For years Bill Dare wanted to create a satire about different worlds exploring Kipling's idea that we travel, 'not just to explore civilizations, but to better understand our own'. But science fiction and space ships never interested him, so he put the idea on ice. Then Brian Gulliver arrived and meant that our hero could be lost in a fictional world without the need for any sci-fi.
Satirical targets over the series: the medical profession and its need to pathologize everything; the effect of marriage on children; spirituality and pseudo-science; compensation culture; sexism; the affect of our obsession with fame.
Gulliver's Travels is the only book Bill Dare read at university. His father, Peter Jones, narrated a similarly peripatetic radio series: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

FRI 14:00 Wintering by Katherine May (m001288f)
Episode 5

FRI 14:30 The Living Mountain (b03mfndd)
Robert Macfarlane takes inspiration from writer Nan Shepherd on a very special poetic pilgrimage to the Cairngorms.
Nan Shepherd believed that it was 'a grand thing to get leave to live.' She did this by spending every minute she could in her beloved Cairngorms. In her 88-years, she covered thousands of miles on foot and became minutely aware of the rhythms of these wild places.
She collected her thoughts in 'The Living Mountain'. It's a remarkable love letter to these dramatic landscapes, but convinced that readers didn't want an "aimless, sensual exploration of the Cairngorms," Nan tucked the manuscript away in a drawer and left it there for 30-years.
Four years before she died, her book finally saw the light of day. At just 80-pages, it's small in size, but big in impact and has been described by The Guardian as "the finest book ever written on nature and landscape in Britain".
Robert Macfarlane agrees. He calls 'The Living Mountain' a "wry, beautiful hymn to 'living all the way through'". He thinks this book is hugely important as more and more of us experience less and less contact with the outside world; "We are, literally, losing touch." Nan's writing is the antithesis of this. She plunges readers right into the landscape.
Robert celebrates this intrepid literary spirit by embarking on an autumnal trip right into the heart of Nan's favourite wild places.
