The story of the Garden of Eden in Genesis is perhaps the most influential tale ever told.
Its chief components of God, Adam, Eve, the serpent, temptation and a paradise lost still exert a hold on western thinking. But this ancient story has not always been benign in its effects.

* Novelist Zina Rohan talks about her own investigations about what this story has meant, particularly to women in the west;
* Sean Thomas talks about his search for where the real garden might have been.
* Brook Wilensky-Lanford’s book ‘Paradise Lust’ described the events of the Scopes Trial of 1925 - the famous clash in Dayton, Ohio between Darwinists and creationists that featured an American presidential candidate who declared his belief that Eve was literally made from one of Adam's ribs.

Series 2
Gardening
Susan Calman is the least relaxed person she knows.
She has no down time, no hobbies (unless you count dressing up your cats in silly outfits) and her idea of relaxation is to sit on her sofa playing Assassin's Creed, an hour into which she is in a murderous rage with sky high blood pressure. Her wife had to threaten to divorce her to make her go on holiday, and she's been told by the same long-suffering wife that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.
Susan decided her best bet was to try to immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity.
In her first series, she attempted to find the new Susan Calm, by watching Cricket; going Hillwalking; visiting an Art Gallery and being spontaneous. She enjoyed these pursuits, but all too soon found herself slipping back into her old ways. So she's trying again.
For starters, she’s taking a trip to the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh to learn about Gardening with Val McDermid, in the hope of one day being able to tell her Euphorbia from Euphoria.
In this audience stand up show, Susan reveals how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts.

Two Infinities and Beyond - part 2
In the second part of our eternal quest to investigate infinity, inspired by this question from father and son duo Sorley and Tom Watson from Edinburgh: “Is anything in the Universe truly infinite, or is infinity something that only exists in mathematics?”
Hannah and Adam try and find something that is truly infinite, from the infinitely small particles that live in the subatomic world to the infinitely dense heart of a black hole. But how about the Universe itself? We find out how physicists go about measuring the shape of the Universe, with the help of an orange and a game of Asteroids. Plus, we consider the possibility that the Universe might be finite and have an edge. If so, what's on the other side?
Theoretical physicist Sean Carroll from Caltech and cosmologist Andrew Pontzen from University College London help us navigate our biggest question yet.

"A cold coming we had of it, / Just the worst time of the year / For a journey, and such a long journey ..."
TS Eliot's poem for Epiphany, "Journey of the Magi", is one of his most popular poems.
Yet it is deceptively complex and, as Peggy Reynolds discovers, takes us on our own journey to somewhere very far removed from the simple certainties of the Three Wise Men at the manger.
Readings by Alec Guiness and TS Eliot.
Producer Christine Hall
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2011.
SUN 12:30 Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics (b078xpfb)
Series 2
Agrippina
Join Natalie Haynes and guests for half an hour of comedy and the Classics from the BBC Radio Theatre in London.
Natalie is a reformed comedian who is a little bit obsessive about Ancient Greece and Rome.
Today she stands up in the name of one of the most powerful women of Ancient Rome and Caligula's big sister, Agrippina the Younger.
Julia Agrippina was pretty well-connected all round given that her granddad was the Emperor Augustus, her husband (also her uncle: don't ask) was Emperor Claudius and her son was Emperor Nero.
And she was no slouch. Turns out it was her handiness with the purse strings that kept the Empire going. Also, who else has survived an assassination attempt by a specially built collapsible boat?

Lenny Henry travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to tell the story of August Wilson, contemporary America’s greatest black playwright.
When Lenny won the London Critics’ Circle award for best-actor in August Wilson’s ‘Fences’, many admitted they knew little about this great black playwright, whose work brought the lives of working-class Pittsburgh African Americans to Broadway and across the USA.
Although at his untimely death in 2005, Wilson had been living for many years on the west coast in Seattle, his plays and his soul had long remained in the east, in the venerable old steel town of Pittsburgh where he was born and grew up.
Lenny travels to the city of three rivers and many bridges, now slowly recovering from post-industrial gloom, to visit the old, multiracial Hill District, where August lived as a child, and whose geography and characters run through his plays like the Allegheny River through the city.
In a sequence of ten plays, known as the ‘Pittsburgh Cycle’, Wilson charts the stories of black Americans across ten decades of the 20th century. Vibrant, real, yet filled with the original African rhythms and spirit that the playwright believed should underpin and shape his works, these plays are a magisterial account.
At the now semi-derelict childhood home, Lenny meets surviving members of Wilson’s family, and encounters those who knew and loved him, like Sala Udin, who helped Wilson in the 1970s set up a powerful black theatre group to tell the stories of the Hill’s residents.

SUN 22:30 Paul Sinha's Citizenship Test (b038zf13)
4. British Greatness
Paul Sinha is proudly British. He also loves a quiz. So you would have thought that the UK Citizenship Test, which newcomers to this country must pass to become citizens, would have been right up his street.
But the questions in the 2012 and 2013 Home Office guides seem either bizarrely easy - "Where is Welsh most widely spoken?" - or infuriatingly vague - "What happened in the First World War?".
So Paul has created his own test, to better reflect the things that aspiring migrants should understand before they can call themselves British.
In this episode, he looks who and what Britons consider to be "great", and social cohesion - from what you need to know about weddings and marriage to the 2011 summer riots.
Written and performed by Paul Sinha.

After treatment for Ovarian and breast cancer Chippy, is mad, Jill is sad and Terri is definitely dangerous to know!
The road back after cancer treatment can be tricky and full of obstacles.
Two middle aged women and their younger friend seek to regain their zest for life and love by learning to dance at Bad Salsa, the club where everyone knows your name but no-one knows your prognosis!
Depictions of people with cancer on TV and radio too often follow a standard format; there is the diagnosis, the depression the chemo, then the false recovery followed by the tragic death.
Written by Kay Stonham, Bad Salsa tries to paint a picture at once more hopeful and more in line with survival rates which have improved immensely over the past 20 years.
For many, 'living with cancer' is now their day to day challenge. The characters in the series have finished their treatment and are in the process of finding their way back to normal life or at least finding a "new normal." As in the real world, the challenges of everyday life go on for our characters; like us they have boring marriages, distracting crushes, troublesome children, difficult workmates and infuriating parents, but unlike us their brush with mortality has given them a new perspective.
The fun and excitement of the series is in watching them decide to preserve the pre-cancer status quo or in Terri's words, to say "sod it all" and "go for it!"
Follow the women as they embrace the world of salsa whilst they adjust to life after cancer.

The American Art Tapes
A unique insight into the vibrant art scene of mid-1960s America from an archive of recordings made then.
In 1965, painter and teacher John Jones headed to the USA for a year, intending to record the most important and most influential artists he could find. His wife Gaby and their two young daughters went with him. One of those daughters, Nicolette Jones is now a writer and critic and she tells the story of how they lodged in New York, while her father grabbed interviews with Yoko Ono, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg and many more.
This was the moment of Happenings, Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism, while the long shadow of Dada and Surrealism, represented on the tapes by Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray, reached forward to Louise Bourgeois.
Later, with nothing planned at all, the family set off on a three month road-trip in their old Ford station wagon, travelling America from East to West Coast, turning up in little towns on the off chance of getting an interview with artists like Jasper Johns in Florida or a young Ed Ruscha in California.
The unique archive of over 100 recordings, gathered by John Jones, lay in boxes in the family home for decades, waiting for him to write a book based on the tapes. He wasn't able to do this and so the family offered the whole set of recordings to the Tate Archive, which acquired them in 2015.
Listen out for a tantalising sample of this extraordinary material, airing a pivotal moment in 20th century art and revealing John Jones to be on a par with some of the great audio collectors like Alan Lomax and Studs Terkel.
The mood of the time is evoked by interweaving the artists' reflections with a soundscape of mid-60s American music, TV and location sound.
Art historian and Artistic Director of the Royal Academy, Tim Marlow gives a powerful sense of the artists' achievement, as Nicolette Jones conjures up the feeling of a great American road trip through the eyes of the child she was.

University of Exeter
A lively and funny quiz show, hosted by Steve Punt, where a team of three University students take on a team of three of their professors.
Coming this week from the University of Exeter, the specialist subjects are Psychology, Philosophy and Biosciences, and the questions range from whistling sailors and George Orwell to Pythagoras and guano.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds, and the 'Highbrow and Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, film, and One Direction.
The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more than just glanced at that reading list.
The host Steve Punt, although best known as a satirist on The Now Show, is also someone who delights in all facets of knowledge, not just in the Humanities (his educational background) but in the sciences as well. He has made a number of documentaries for Radio 4, on subjects as varied as "The Poet Unwound - The History Of The Spleen" and "Getting The Gongs" (an investigation into awards ceremonies), as well as a comedy for Radio 4's Big Bang Day set in the Large Hadron Collider, called "The Genuine Particle".

The Pan Book of Horror Stories was a paperback series of short story anthologies first published in 1959. Early editions were known for their lurid cover art and editor Herbert Van Thal’s selection of stories by new authors alongside classics of the genre. It was credited with introducing a new generation to the horror tradition in the 1960s.
The Second Pan Book Of Horror Stories, published in 1962, was considered to be one of the best. Anita Sullivan has selected five from this edition for her own fresh interpretation.

Rhapsody in Blue
"I'm convinced it's the best thing ever written and recorded in the history of things written and recorded" - Moby.
Rhapsody in Blue was first heard exactly 90 years ago when it premiered on February 12, 1924, in New York's Aeolian Hall. Through its use at the opening of Woody Allen's 'Manhattan' it has become synonymous with the city that inspired its creation. But for people around the world, George Gershwin's "experiment in modern music" has become imbued with the most personal of memories.
LA based screen writer Charles Peacock reflects on how this piece has become entwined with his life and how, on an evening at the Hollywood Bowl this music "healed him". When Adela Galasiu was growing up in communist Romania, Rhapsody in Blue represented "life itself, as seen through the eyes of an optimist". For world speed champion Gina Campbell, the opening of that piece will forever remind her of the roar of the Bluebird's ignition as it flew through the "glass like stillness of the water" and brings back the memories of her father, the legendary Donald Campbell - it was played at his funeral when he was finally laid to rest decades after his fatal record attempt on Coniston Lake.
Featuring interviews with Professor of Music Howard Pollock and musician Moby.

TUE 22:30 Susan Calman - Keep Calman Carry On (b09hw51h)
Series 2
Festivals
In the first series of this show she attempted to ditch the old Susan Calman and attempted to find the new Susan Calm, by watching Cricket; going Hillwalking; visiting an Art Gallery and being spontaneous. She enjoyed these pursuits, but all too soon found herself slipping back into her old ways. So she's trying again. This week she takes a trip to the Latitude Festival with Robin Ince, to try and understand why all her friends think a weekend of noisy camping is a relaxing way to spend their time.
In other episodes Susan will learn about gardening with Val McDermid, try her hand at baking with Selasi Gbmormittah and have a go at birdwatching with Emma Kennedy.
Keep Calman Carry On is an audience stand up show in which Susan reports on how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts. It's an attempt to find out how people find solace or sanctuary in these worlds and how Susan can negotiate her own place in them.
Written by Susan Calman and Jon Hunter.
Produced by Lyndsay Fenner.

Critical praise for Elmore Leonard's novel:
"Elmore Leonard is our Prospero, a magician who has given us inspired fun for 50 years. He floats above the action, amused; his motto is surely Puck's "What fools these mortals be." In The Hot Kid, Oklahoma is his version of Shakespeare's enchanted isle in "The Tempest," a brave new world where maids and monsters, outlaws and oilmen, strange creatures all, act out their dubious destinies." - The Washington
Post
"As always, Leonard's prose seems effortless, his dialogue is perfect, and his humor is as dry as a moonshine martini....a terrific pleasure." - Booklist
"The whole sepia-toned caravan, in fact, is so relaxed that even the most violent felonies may leave you smiling. Leonard's gentle epic is as restorative as a month in the country." - Kirkus Reviews

History is full of incredible women who did amazing things. And yet, even though their legacy is still felt today, their names aren't on the tip our tongues. We've all heard of Florence Nightingale and Amelia Earhart - but what about Annie Russell Maunder, Jayaben Desai or Josephine Butler? They're much less well known, yet they all made significant and enduring contributions to our world.
The writer and comedian Viv Groskop has been trawling the BBC radio archives to find out about a kickass sisterhood that refused to stay at home when that's what was expected of them.
We meet the pioneering physician, Sophia Jex Blake; the Nobel laureate environmentalist, Wangari Maathai, the social reformer, Caroline Norton; the champion cyclist, Beryl Burton; we take a trip to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to learn about its founder, Mary Tealby. And many more.
Viv also invites contemporary women to nominate their favourite unsung heroines - so we hear from Clare Balding, Cathy Newman, Samira Ahmed, Natalie Haynes, Gemma Cairney, Angela Barnes and Jessica Fostekew about the females they call phenomenal.
From ancient Rome to the 21st Century, Viv Groskop brings inspiring women out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Lorna Sage's classic memoir, Bad Blood, is a story about how books can be passports out of the 'hell' of childhood. When Grace Dent first read it, it made a huge impact on her, forcing her to question her own childhood and her relationship with writing.
Exiled in a remote parish on the Welsh borders, Bad Blood tells the tale of a strange upbringing in a haunted postwar Britain. 'I've never read anything which explores, with such biting humor and energy, the way rage and frustrated desire are passed down the family line. I've always felt I have a great memoir in me but I'd have to wait for a lot of people to die before I could write it,' says Grace.
She visits the Shropshire vicarage where Bad Blood is set and talks to Lorna's daughter Sharon and to close friends and colleagues - including the writers Marina Warner and Ali Smith who describe what it was like to live with Lorna. Grace also meets Lorna's ex-husband Victor Sage, who describes how Lorna read constantly, 'She ate and read at the same time, without looking up, I had to get used to that when I married her.'
In the 1960s, Lorna became a Professor of English Literature at the University of East Anglia and established an international reputation as a critic, scholar and teacher with a dedication to women's writing. But she also inspired generations of students who came to UEA to listen to hear her voice.
Lorna was revered as a teacher - but her life story made her famous. Bad Blood won the Whitbread prize for biography in 2001, a triumph cruelly clouded by her death from emphysema a week later, aged 57.

Suitable for Framing; Diary Extracts
The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller shares more words of wit and wisdom:
* Suitable For Framing - a story about the significance of art in David's childhood family home -
* Additional extracts from David's book Theft By Finding, a compilation of diary entries from 1977-2002.
With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.
David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.
David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

FRI 14:30 Mysteries from the Past (b01lhbg8)
In 2012 a new outdoor production of the medieval York Cycle of Mystery Plays opened in the city starring Ferdinand Kingsley as Jesus, Graeme Hawley as the devil and a community cast and crew of over 500 people.
The revival of these plays first took place as part of the Festival of Britain in 1951 and were staged, like the 2012 production, against the backdrop of the ruined St Mary's Abbey in the Museum Gardens. The York Mystery Plays are the most complete cycle telling stories from the bible in 48 separate plays each one originally performed by one of the city's medieval guilds. Staged on the back of waggons at various locations around the city the plays were performed on Corpus Christi Day from around 1390 until 1575 and took all day to perform. Since 1951 the plays have been staged every three or four years until 2000 when the last full-scale production took place in York Minster directed by the RSC's Gregory Doran.
In Mysteries from the Past the playwright John Godber takes to the medieval streets of York to look back at how these 'modern-day' performances relate to the original ideas behind the plays of communicating bible stories to the illiterate masses. Examining archive material including medieval manuscripts and recordings of the some of the productions he talks to experts in medieval drama and some of the people involved in past productions which have launched the careers of actors Judi Dench, David Bradley and Mary Ure. The productions have not been without controversy - such as casting a women as God or having Hindu actor, Victor Banerjee, playing Christ - guaranteeing publicity for these adventures in major community theatre production.
