SAT 02:30 Sable Island - A Dune Adrift (b00p8c15)
100 miles east of Nova Scotia lies a 30 mile-long sand dune: Sable Island, population, two, who work in the weather and research station - and 300 wild horses.
Sean Street reveals how this remote place, this dune adrift in the Atlantic, is providing information vital to us all, and has gained a powerful presence in the imagination.
In the middle of the world's worst weather systems, held tentatively in place by ocean currents, it’s the perfect place to monitor climate change, and air and sea pollution.
More than 500 ships have been wrecked here. There have been several attempts at colonisation, by the Portuguese, the French (Sable is the French word for Sand) and even a group of prominent Bostonians, and all have failed.
Thomas Raddell, Nova Scotia's finest writer, was a radio operator on Sable for a year, and this inspired his novel The Nymph and the Lamp. Poet Elizabeth Bishop visited and wrote about the island.
Sean examines wreckage from some of over 500 ships that came to grief here. There is a poignant baby's crib made from wreck wood. He meets artist Roger Savage who battled to capture the landscape. And he meets a man who dedicated years to studying the rare Ipswich Sparrow, which nests only here.
What emerges is that Sable Island is for the Canadians what the Galapagos are for the people of Ecuador, or Easter Island for Chileans. It is important scientifically and historically, but more than this it is important culturally, as part of their identity.
Producer: Julian May.

The people who throw away those lives for their own glory - or profit - or both. I think it's about the annihilation, the wanton destruction of everything we love."

SAT 07:30 Great Lives (b09111hc)
Series 43
Don McCullin on Norman Lewis
In 1968 Norman Lewis wrote an article called Genocide in Brazil. The photographs that accompanied it were by Don McCullin.
Lewis later said that this one piece of journalism was the great achievement of his life. It led directly to the creation of Survival International and a change in the law relating to the treatment of indigenous people in Brazil.
Lewis is known as a brilliant writer - one of our best, said Graham Greene, 'not of any particular decade of our century'. He's best remembered for A Dragon Apparent and Naples '44.
Don McCullin didn't travel with Norman Lewis to Brazil, but they struck up an unexpected friendship. He was like my father, the great photographer says.
And in Norman Lewis's later years they worked together in Venezuela, Papua New Guinea and elsewhere. But McCullin didn't read many of his books. "I struggled through Naples '44" he admits. Yet his admiration for the way Lewis opened his eyes to the world remains undimmed.
Recorded on location at McCullin's Somerset farmhouse with Norman Lewis's biographer Julian Evans.
Presented by Matthew Parris.
Produced at BBC Bristol by Miles Warde.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in August 2017.

This includes the very first episode, 'The Offer' – originally made for BBC TV's 'Comedy Playhouse' - one of ten one-off comedies penned by Ray and Alan. BBC bosses viewed it as a sweetener for the duo, who'd recently parted company with Tony Hancock. Despite several strong concepts, only 'The Offer' progressed from pilot to series development.
The TV pilot aired in January 1962, followed by the first Steptoe series in June starring Wilfrid Brambell and Harry H Corbett as father and son duo, Albert and Harold Steptoe.
Revealing how the series was created, the writers also explain why it prompted concerns in Parliament.
The duo's selected episodes were all adapted from the TV scripts and recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio by Gale Pedrick.

Series 11 of the show where one week's interviewee becomes the next week's interviewer. The first episode of Chain Reaction was broadcast on BBC Radio Five in 1991 when John Cleese was the first comedian in the hot seat. Now, 25 years on, a new series sees another raft of the world's best-loved comedians talking to each other about their lives and work. This week, comedy legend and music hall expert Roy Hudd turns interviewer as he chats to the much loved actress, Alison Steadman.
Roy Hudd has clocked up more than 50 years in showbusiness, starting out as a Butlins redcoat in the 1950s and then developing a stellar career through numerous successes on stage, radio and screen. BBC Radio listeners know him best as the host of the much loved News Huddlines on Radio 2 for 26 years. More recently, Roy gained plaudits for his moving portrayal of Bud Flanagan in the BBC drama 'We're Doomed! The Dad's Army Story'.
Alison Steadman is an actress who has been popular with the British public and worldwide since making her name in the critically acclaimed works of Mike Leigh in the 1970s. She went on to deliver much-loved and memorable performances across both drama and comedy in Pride and Prejudice and Gavin and Stacey amongst many others.

Episode 3
Helen Keen, Peter Serafinowicz and Susy Kane star in the funny but true history of space exploration.
This week, given that on a rocket every ounce of saved weight is crucial, an astronaut who weighs 15% less and breathes less oxygen should have a tremendous advantage. So where were all of NASA's female astronauts? The story of Soviet pioneer Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, who at one time logged more hours in orbit than all the male American astronauts put together makes a thought-provoking contrast to the marginalised female astronauts of the USA, the so called Mercury 13, none of whom ever got to go into space.
Written by Helen Keen and Miriam Underhill
Produced by Gareth Edwards.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2012.

Novelists
Elif Shafak
Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the Turkish writer Elif Shafak.
Elif Shafak has published ten novels and several volumes of non-fiction and her work is translated into 47 languages. She is the most widely read female novelist in Turkey today.
Born in 1971, she was raised by a single working mother and also, for the first ten years of her life, by her grandmother in Ankara. Her mother's job as a diplomat led to a move to Madrid when Elif was ten years old - and so began a peripatetic life which has taken her to places as diverse as Jordan and Germany, the United States and finally to London where she has lived for the past seven years.
Elif wrote her first novels in Turkish, but began writing in English shortly after the start of the new millennium. English, she says, has given her a new freedom to write about sensitive issues in Turkey. Her books draw on diverse cultures and reflect her interest in history, philosophy, spiritualism and Sufism. One commentator has said of her work: "Stepping into the writing of this Turkish-born author for the first time is like breaking through the back of a children's wardrobe and walking into a whole new multicultural world of lives and histories - and, above all, fabulous stories."
She is a regular columnist both for English as well as Turkish papers and also writes lyrics for rock musicians.

Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.
First broadcast in the USA in 2019.

Welsh Ladies
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Welsh Ladies presented by poet Mab Jones.
Taking inspiration from her collection of vintage and antique 'Welsh lady' postcards, Mab Jones seeks out their stories, and tries to find out what they would say if they could, in a poetic tribute to them.
They sit, in traditional dress, in photos from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, looking uncomfortable in tall black hats and scratchy woollen shawls. Occasionally they're arranged around a harp. Usually they're in a domestic setting - silent, obedient, rooted to the spot. Mab wants to find out who these Welsh women of bygone ages were. What were their lives like? How did they think, and feel?
Finding out more about them isn't a straightforward task, because although the subject of wry greeting cards today, the voices of women in Wales of that era have largely been absent from its historiography. Could it be that they didn't really exist at all? The costume was partly invented during the romantic revival in Wales, at a time when the old rural ways were dying out. More decorous than practical, it was celebrated by tourists and visitors, and became an emblem of national identity.
But even if their ways of life have vanished, the female poetic voices of the pre-industrial era are still traceable. In seeking them out, Mab finds poems that speak of the experience and imagination of women through a rich heritage of folk traditions and ancient oral traditions, from anonymous old verses thought to have been written by women, to individual voices that are only now being recovered and translated into English.
Mab composes a poem to the picture postcard version of the Welsh Ladies, who for the camera seem to be inhabiting a life that was not theirs, bringing her warmth and wit to this attempt to bring them, and their forbears, back to life.

The Voice
Matt is 25. He has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app on his iPad. Everyone who cares about Matt knows that this isn't the defining thing about him. He is funny and clever and "up for stuff" - partly because he is keen to show that there's nothing he can't do, but also because, if he's honest, he's aware that he's less likely than other people to get the blame.
Now Matt's left home for the first time and moved in to share a flat with his best mate, Jess. But when Bob (Allan Mustafa) shows up as the new carer, the fun really starts. Bob is new to the job and, although willing, domestic duties are not really his forte. He's better at selling weed and dealing in knocked off iPads.
But he likes Matt and treats him like a real person. So, as far as Matt is concerned, Bob is here to stay.
Ability is the semi-autobiographical co-creation of Lee Ridley, otherwise known as Lost Voice Guy. Like his sitcom creation, Lee has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app. Lost Voice Guy is - probably - the first stand up comedian to use a communication aid. He won the BBC New Comedy Award in 2014, has done three full Edinburgh shows and been tour support for Ross Noble, Patrick Kielty and Jason Cook. Lee has previously worked for Sunderland City Council's communications team, and the BBC in Newcastle and London as well, as various local newspapers.
Katherine Jakeways is the co-creator and co-writer of Ability. Katherine is a multi-award nominated writer. She has written North by Northamptonshire, Guilt Trip and All Those Women for BBC Radio 4 as well as numerous radio plays. She has also written for Crackanory and The Tracey Ullman Show for TV along with a BBC 1 pilot, Carol and Vinnie.

SUN 15:30 The Poppy Factory (b016x22w)
Chris Ledgard explores the story of The Poppy Factory where, former members of the armed forces have made millions of poppies and wreaths for Remembrance Sunday.
In 1922, Major George Howson, the founder of the Disabled Society, wrote to his parents:
"I have been given a cheque for £2,000 to make poppies with. It is a large responsibility and will be very difficult. If the experiment is successful it will be the start of an industry to emply 150 men. I do not think it can be a great success, but it is worth doing."
Major Howson's pessimism was short-lived. His workforce grew rapidly and, a few years later, The Poppy Factory had to move from London’s Old Kent Road to bigger premises in Richmond, Surrey. Soon, more than 350 men had jobs there.
The factory is still in the same place and still staffed by former servicemen and women and their dependents, some of whom are coping with stress disorders. Chris Ledgard discovers the remarkable history and the story of workers also making them at home.
How is the charity coping with a dwindling workforce and a shift to mechanised production?
And discover how money raised from selling the poppies is being used.

Robert Peston and Bernadine Evaristo
Writer Bernadine Evaristo and BBC Business Editor Robert Peston join Harriett Gilbert to discuss the merits of books about infanticide, an inter-racial love affair and growing up as one of the Mitford girls.
Bernadine Evaristo has been described as as 'one of Britain's most talented, innovative and successful contemporary writers', drawing on her dual heritage and London roots to energise and inform her work. Her seven books include 'The Emperor's Babe' and 'Blonde Roots'. Her choice for 'A Good Read' is 'The Boy Next Door' by Irene Sabatini, the story of a turbulent love affair between a mixed race girl and her white, casually racist, neighbour, set in newly independent Zimbabwe.
Robert Peston is the BBC's Business Editor, a multi-award winning journalist and writer. He chooses a book by his late wife, Sian Busby which explores the true story of a distressing family secret. Her great-grandmother was sent to Broadmoor for the murder of twin babies in 1919, whom she drowned in a bathtub when suffering from post-natal depression. Busby's book 'The Cruel Mother' explores the personal and historical context of the story.
Harriett's choice this week is 'Hons and Rebels' by Jessica Mitford, a memoir of her eccentric upbringing and approach to life as a controversial writer, civil rights activist and political campaigner.

The Battle of Bristol
Dr Phil Hammond and David Spicer's satire on General Practice in the NHS reaches fever pitch. An anti-austerity demo vies with new government NHS plans in a battle for hearts and minds.
Of all the politically challenged GP's practices, Polyoaks, is possibly the most politically confused. As a summer of NHS discontent simmers away, the atmosphere is charged as Dr Roy Thornton (Nigel Planer) receives a visit from a political activist (Jasper Britton) and his brother Dr Hugh Thornton (Simon Greenall) is being wooed by the organisers of yet another top down, root and branch reorganisation of the NHS.
Practice Nurse Monica (Polly Frame) shows signs of going back to her campaigning roots and TV's Dr Jeremy (David Westhead) discovers the potential of arranging the catering at anti-austerity rallies.

TUE 07:30 Jayde Adams: Hometown Glory (m0011cqq)
Episode 1
After over a decade in London, comedian Jayde Adams is returning to her hometown of Bristol. Why? It’s cheaper. But also because of reasons that are much deeper than that, and which she told Radio 4 would probably take two half-hour episodes to explain.
Over the course of this mini series, Jayde is going to be asking what ‘feeling at home’ really means; why we leave home; and why some of us, at least, feel the draw to go back.
Not that Jayde’s story isn’t interesting enough on its own - girl lives in same house for eighteen years, moves to London, moves back again - Jayde’s also spoken to Dawn French, Victoria Scone, Keala Settle and Sophie Willan about their own experiences of home; where they’ve made home; and how it’s made them.

Boy, Oh Boy, He's Going Down
Sean Street examines those moments where Radio forgets itself, when laughter, alcohol or sheer emotion well up.
Traditionally the wireless has been somewhat formal, but occasionally reporters have been overwhelmed by what they're witnessing, contributors so passionate in argument and commentators overcome by mirth - or drink - that the conventions are dropped.
Then communication comes pure, direct and unselfconscious: a Battle of Britain dogfight sounds like sport, sport like war, a naval fleet becomes fairyland, the author of a fairytale about rabbits attacks another guest.
Hear the moments when Radio reveals far more than what is said.

TUE 14:15 Emily Bronte - Wuthering Heights (b0b3cvdl)
7. Catherine
Emily Bronte's iconic love story. Her only novel is unforgettable, full of passion and darkness. Thrilling but haunting until the very end, uniquely bound to its setting on the bleak Yorkshire moors.
Nelly Dean is the voice of normality and reason in a world of chaos, darkness and intense passion. Heathcliff and Cathy's love is the beating heart of the story, and even after Cathy's death we hear her chilling and ghostly voice.
An intensely powerful and haunting soundscape weaves around the action as the two grow from children to adults and we witness the brutal actions that lead to Heathcliff's own cruelty. Cruelty that shatters the lives of all those around him.
But even through Heathcliff's destruction there is a redemptive ending filled with such mystery and lyricism it works like a spell.
In this episode, it's a dark time. The shadow of death lingers over the moors. Heathcliff is now the master of Wuthering Heights and is seeking revenge.

TUE 14:30 The Beat Hotel (b01p0sb1)
Think of American writers in Paris and the chances are the first people to come to mind are the Lost Generation of the 1920s - Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Stein and friends. But a period every bit as significant in the development of American letters and the culture more broadly is often overlooked.
Professor Andrew Hussey tells the story of how a dirty, run-down hotel in the medieval heart of Paris became in the late 1950s and early 1960s a bohemian mecca, attracting some of the most important figures of the Beat Generation. And not only did those individuals live there, they also thrived among the more liberal social attitudes than they'd grown up with in America, creating some of their most important work. Allen Ginsberg wrote much of Kaddish, William Burroughs completed Naked Lunch, Gregory Corso rote BOMB; it was here that the famous cut-up technique so important to Burroughs and so influential on modern culture was invented by Bryon Gysin, and also the place where the Dream Machine - a means of inducing drug free hallucinations - was developed by Burroughs' lover Ian Sommerville.
Andrew also shows that the Beats were much more engaged with their French surroundings than has previously been thought, meeting many of the most important European artists of the day and witnessing the frequent violence that the Algerian War brought with it to the streets in their immediate vicinity. He will make clear that the Beat movement - so often identified as strictly American in its focus - was in fact passionately internationalist and a key influence in global avant-garde political aesthetics.

THU 14:15 Emily Bronte - Wuthering Heights (b0b3fkpv)
9. Nelly
In this episode, Catherine discovers Linton lives at Wuthering Heights and begins to keep secrets. Nelly knows Heathcliff is the engineer of all this and is determined to stop him.

Dramatised in ten parts by award-winning writer Rachel Joyce.

THU 14:30 The Georgians: Restraint, Revolution and Reform (b049z4ww)
1. Stability
Amanda Foreman examines the formative years of British politics when the most important structures of British life - still valued and recognised today - were established in the shadow of revolution.
Amanda invites us to enter the world of the political elite in London's luxurious St James' Square. Here, political heavyweights would gather for a season debating and defining British politics. Against a backdrop of decadence, they went about the serious business of crafting the structures of politics and society so familiar to us in the 21st Century.
The Georgians continuously tested where true power lay – in the Monarchy, or in Parliament. At Buckingham Palace with the keeper of the Queen's pictures, Desmond Shawe-Taylor, Amanda discovers how a monarchy imported from Hanover styled themselves as a constitutional monarchy that showed deference to the structures of British politics.
But this wasn't just a power play by ambitious politicians, it was part of a reforming attitude exemplified by calls to reform Parliament and make it more representative of the people. No 18th century figure embodied the development of this political modernity more than Edmund Burke, the Irish philosopher and politician, who Amanda encounters with MP Jesse Norman.
The struggle for power was a struggle for control of the people, made more pressing in a climate of fear as revolution took hold across the channel in France. But, as Amanda shows, local-level politics in Georgian Britain was a type of 'soft power' that eased tensions.
Produced by Katherine Godfrey.

Tracy Chevalier on Mary Anning
Matthew Parris and his guest - novelist Tracy Chevalier - discuss the life of Mary Anning, the working class woman from Lyme Regis who discovered full dinosaur skeletons on Dorset's Jurassic Coast and sold them to collectors in the early 1800s. They are joined by Hugh Torrens, Emeritus Professor of History of Science and Technology at the University of Keele. Mary's remarkable finds came before Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and she believed them at first to be giant crocodiles, but as scientists began flocking to Lyme Regis to buy her specimens, she started to educate herself in geology, becoming an authority on fossils.
However, as with many of the subjects of Great Lives, she was never fully credited for her efforts and faded from public consciousness after her death.

Revolution
The French Revolution was one of the most far-reaching social and political upheavals in modern history spanning 10 years and involving the execution of the King, collapse of monarchy and slaughter of thousands at the guillotine.
Starring Richard E Grant and Sally Hawkins.
Comedy trio The Penny Dreadfuls attempt to tell the epic story of the Revolution in one hour, with jokes.
Richard E Grant is Maximilien Robespierre the dictatorial architect of the Reign of Terror, who sent thousands to their death and Sally Hawkins is Marie-Therese, the 16 year old daughter of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI.
Marie-Therese was incarcerated for three years by the revolutionaries. When she was locked up her father, mother, aunt and little brother were also with her. After the execution of her father the rest of the family were moved to another part of the tower and Marie-Therese was kept in solitary confinement. It's recorded that Robespierre visited Marie-Therese at one point in the tower but there's no historical record of that conversation. This play is that conversation.

FRI 14:15 Emily Bronte - Wuthering Heights (b0b3ftjc)
10. Heathcliff
In this episode, After setting a trap, Heathcliff has imprisoned Catherine and Nelly at Wuthering Heights. A haunted Heathcliff seems determined to wreak revenge to the bitter end.
Starring Ben Batt and Chloe Pirrie.
Dramatised in ten parts by award-winning writer Rachel Joyce.

FRI 14:30 The Georgians: Restraint, Revolution and Reform (b04brjnr)
2. Reform
In the final part of a series examining the political impact of the Georgian era, Amanda Foreman looks at politics on the ground as she considers the structures of British life that created both control and freedom. She asks why Britain experienced political evolution, not revolution.
In 1832 the British political elite voluntarily chose to weaken its own power for the first and only time in history. This was the result of the Reform Act, which added 130 new seats to Parliament and almost doubled the number of people able to vote in general elections.
While riot and rebellion was rife and often met with violent backlash from those in power, Amanda argues that the Georgian elites placed emphasis on freedom through a strengthening of the apparatus of control in politics and the law and that ordinary people could exercise political influence even without the vote.
Meeting radicals in Newcastle and evangelical conservatives in the Mendip hills, Amanda examines how the ordinary disenfranchised man and woman increasingly invested in politics and civic life through a combination of local-level political interaction, seemingly non-political actions such as philanthropy, and direct rebellion - thereby avoiding heads on sticks and, instead, transforming how the elected related to the people.
The series examines the formative years of British politics when the most important structures of British life we value and recognise today were established – and all in the shadow of revolution. It paints a picture of the Georgian legacy, one where decadence and scandal takes a backseat to proto-democracy and social reform.

What It Says on the Tin
There is a well known advert for woodstain with the modest boast, "It does what it says on the tin."
This is the theme for our trio of writers - actor Michael Simkins, psychologist Dr Funke Baffour, and journalist Tom Mitchelson. Truth and lies in everyday life, and how honest are we with those we love, including ourselves.
Tom Mitchelson reveals a sideline as an investigative journalist - infiltrating a male bonding cult, posing as a playboy, pretending to be a foreign language teacher - to get at a higher truth. "I find it exhilarating," he confesses.
Not everything is as it seems in Off The Page, presented by Dominic Arkwright.

FRI 22:30 Talking to Strangers (b0717j28)
Episode 4
Comic monologues in which a range of characters find themselves engaging in that most un-British of activities: talking to a stranger.
Each piece is a character study: funny, frank, absurd, moving... Characters include a sex councillor who loves to draw, a spy who loves to share, a woman who likes to help too much ('I'm a serial helpist...'), a frustrated falconer, and a cheater who has to call her cheatee the morning after. And in this show, the listener themselves 'plays' the silent stranger in the piece...
Written and performed by Sally Phillips and Lily Bevan.
With guest stars including Emma Thompson, Olivia Coleman, Jessica Hynes, Steve Evets, Sinead Matthews and Joel Fry.
Producer: Sam Bryan
A BBC Comedy Production first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2016.

Additional roles played by Michael Fenton Stevens and Philip Pope.
Written by Andy Hamilton.
