SAT 13:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw66w)
6. Shattered
Pandora Sykes explores of the heavy cost of having private troubles as a public figure.
In this eight-part series for BBC Radio 4, Pandora traces Britney’s incredible life: from her hardscrabble childhood in rural Louisiana, to her coronation as the inaugural pop princess of the internet, navigating an insatiable celebrity gossip complex; through to a young mother on trial by the paparazzi.
Britney is a pop culture phenomenon. Pandora looks behind that mask - and beyond Britney herself - to explore how Britney became the most Googled person in the world, for almost 7 years, and what it says, both then and now, about the entertainment industry, politics, sex and how we see women in the public eye.
Britney’s public struggles saw her placed in a conservatorship, in which she lost the right to control her finances and day to day life. Thirteen years later, and she is in court, pleading for this controversial legal arrangement to end. We will look at how Britney has been transformed from girl-next-door teen sensation to pop music’s Rapunzel, trapped in a supposedly rotten system.
Pieces of Britney mixes documentary, archive and interviews to tell Britney’s remarkable story. It also features drama, written by playwright Katie Hims, to bring Britney and her extraordinary world to life.
Pieces of Britney is a sympathetic portrayal of Britney, during a time of cultural reappraisal about how we treat women - famous, or otherwise.

The same year, after almost 30 years with the band, and having a developed a fear of flying, she opted to leave and lived in semi-retirement for the next 15 years, releasing only one solo album in 2004. Attenborough argues that Waterton shouldn't be just remembered for his writing. He should be credited with establishing the first nature reserve in this country.
Appalled by the ravages of the industrial revolution's impact on the landscape, he built a wall around his estate to protect the wildlife - and free of charge allowed people to visit, which they did in their masses.
Written and presented by David Attenborough

Pursuit Of Beauty - In Emily Dickinson’s Bedroom
The house where Emily Dickinson lived in Amherst, Massachusetts, is now The Emily Dickinson Museum. The museum has restored her bedroom, where she wrote most of her poetry, and they offer writing sessions for those who wish to spend an hour or two alone in Emily's Room.
In this programme three very modern writers, Cheryl Strayed, Ocean Vuong and Sharon Olds visit her room, to write, and to examine their writing through their own personal connections with Emily Dickinson's life and work.
For someone who has had such a huge impact on American poetry, Emily Dickinson lived a very small life. She published only a handful of poems in her lifetime, and as she grew older became a recluse who wore only white. Dubbed 'the myth of Amherst', her posthumous fame poses her as a puzzle to be solved. In visiting her room and meeting her on the page Cheryl, Sharon and Ocean reclaim her as a passionate, politically engaged writer whose work speaks powerfully to our present moment.
Cheryl Strayed is the author of four books and is best known for her memoir of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, 'Wild', which was turned into a film starring Reese Witherspoon. She also wrote the beloved advice column 'Dear Sugar', the best of which was collected into 'Tiny Beautiful Things'.
Ocean Vuong won the 2018 TS Eliot prize in 201 for his debut poetry collection 'Night Sky with Exit Wounds'. Born in Vietnam, Ocean has lived most of his life in Emily Dickinson's New England, and currently teaches at the University of Massachusetts, based in Amherst.
Sharon Olds is one of America's leading contemporary poets, the author of many collections of poetry and the recipient of many prizes, including the Pulitzer and the TS Eliot.

SUN 15:30 The Welsh M1 (b03nt8g7)
1. Heading South
The A470 runs nearly 200 miles through the heart of Wales from Llandudno to Cardiff Bay.
It was created to connect north and south of the country, yet it takes four hours – sometimes more - to make the journey. It's certainly not the fastest road in the UK but to drive the A470 is to truly understand the landscape, history, culture and language of Wales.
In the first of two programmes, Cerys Matthews sets out on a road trip in search of a nation's identity and the essence of Welshness. She travels through the Welsh-speaking heartland of the north-west, meeting writers, musicians and historians. She falls into conversation on the streets of Llanrwst, encounters poetry in the paving stones of Blaenau Ffestiniog and discovers the roots of one of her favourite folk songs on the high passes of the A470 beyond Dolgellau.
The A470's route is ancient, its northern sections following the old Roman road, Sarn Helen.
Yet it's also modern: the politics of Wales are complicated by the challenge of bringing together a whole nation both geographically and symbolically. The road was created in 1979 by re-designating older roads. And that's why this tarmac tribute to nationhood winds back and forth across the Welsh landscape, apparently reluctant to reach its final destination.
As she travels south, Cerys hears many different definitions and descriptions of the A470: a road to nowhere; the road Wales deserves; a highway of loss; the Welsh M1.

Walsall
This week, Mark performs the local Town Hall in Walsall, West Midlands: a town which has nothing to do with Birmingham.
Mark discusses their statue of a concrete hippo, smaller than he expected and the fact that people keep moving it. Mark also jokes about the statue of Princess Diana that turned black.
Mark then talks about the leather trade and the local leather museum. Then there's the Walsall man who shot himself with his own taser.
Mark explores the town's history - mining and how he visited a very hot iron foundry. We hear about the creation of St. Monday, in which people tried to get the Monday off from work. Sister Dora was the "Civilian Florence Nightingale" helping to improve health care for the poor, who also has a statue.
Mark tells us about the Walsall Anarchists who were framed by the police and probably the most famous anarchists in British history. And we can't forget Walsall's very own football club, who defeated the unstoppable Arsenal 2-0 in the 1930s - one of the biggest upsets in football history.

Road to Oxford is set at the celebration of the dawn on May 1st, when the choristers sing from the top of Magdalen tower and the students shiver in their evening clothes at the base - after a night of partying. 6. The Revolutionary Front
John Reed's classic eye-witness account of the Russian Revolution in October 1917.
Kerensky and the counter-revolutionary Cossacks are making gains and threatening Petrograd. Reed visits the Revolutionary frontline with the Bolshevik commander-in-chief - who seems less than organised.
John Reed's vivid eye-witness account of his time in Petrograd was written in early 1918 and published in the USA the following year. It was an instant best-seller, so much so that in Russia it was some years before Stalin - who is only mentioned twice in the book - felt he could ban it for its portrayal of Trotsky. Possibly naïve, definitely politically one-sided, nevertheless the veracity and impact of Reed's enthusiastic snapshot-style reportage has become a classic memoir and inspired films including Eisenstein's classic 'October' and 'Reds' which won an Oscar for its director and star, Warren Beatty.

MON 14:30 Peter and the Wolf (b0076vxg)
'Peter In The Wolf' is a classical music classic, perhaps even the classic, for children. Almost from its first performance in Stalin's Russia it's images of boy, duck, bird, cat and wolf have become a staple. Pianist and entertainer Rainer Hersch is just another of those brought up on Prokofiev's tale of boyish bravery and bravado. In this programme he endeavours to find out more about the hinterland of the piece.
Alongside the likes of Richard Baker, Terry Wogan and Angela Rippon are some more unlikely figures like the American comic Peter Schikele, the broadcaster Floella Benjamin and, most telling of all, the daughter of Natalia Satz, the woman who encouraged Prokoviev to write the piece in the first place and who performed it thousands of times before handing over the role to her daughter.

TUE 11:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw6j1)
7. Groundhog Day
Pandora Sykes revisits the events that led to Britney's conservatorship and the key players around that time.

TUE 14:15 John Reed - Ten Days That Shook the World (b098j5l7)
7. Counter-Revolution
John Reed's classic eye-witness account of the Russian Revolution in October 1917.
Bryant is caught up in a vicious street battle and witnesses the bloody violence of the Revolution at close quarters. Counter-revolutionary government troops holding the telephone exchange are captured by Bolshevik sailors - who then have to learn to man the switchboards. Dramatised by Robin Brooks.

The University of Liverpool
A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from the University of Liverpool with specialist subjects including Physiology, Egyptology and Psychology and questions ranging from the great god Ammit, the Eater of the Dead, to Buzz Aldrin and from gallstones to Gershwin.
The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.
Other Universities featured in this series include Roehampton, Hull, Queen's University Belfast and St John's College, Cambridge.

Series 3
Summer: New Swedes
Edinburgh Comedy award winner Adam Riches stars as the bemused and culturally challenged comedian abroad - recorded in Sweden with a cast of the country's most popular comedy actors, and written by Danny Robins.
It's three years since Geoff moved to the tiny north Swedish town of Yxsjö with his girlfriend Linda (Sissela Benn from the Swedish version of The Office). It has been quite a culture shock and they've been through a lot in three years - rotting herring, moose and bears, battles with language, perfect ex-boyfriends and ice hockey, the birth of a son, a marriage proposal and a runaway hot air balloon.
In this third series, Geoff is faced with a road trip south with his disturbingly loved up parents-in-law, the vagaries of the Swedish immigration system, advanced Swedish lessons and the surprising generosity of the benefit system.
Episode 2:
Geoff's father-in-law Sten (Thomas Orredson) sponsors Ashkan, a young refugee from Afghanistan, who has applied for asylum. Was Trump right? Is Sweden being overwhelmed by refugees? Why is Sten friends with a Swedish cowboy, played by the original Wallnder, Krister Henriksson? And is football the only truly international language?
Writer Danny Robins is the co-creator of Lenny Henry's sitcom Rudy's Rare Records. Ashkan is played by Afghan refugee teenager Ajmal Shamsi.

Road to Lisbon
Douglas Livingstone’s ‘Road to ...’ series, which creates a specially recorded soundtrack of major festivals to create new stories, takes us to this year’s joyous summer festival of St. Anthony in Lisbon. Patron saint of lovers and lost things, St. Anthony presides over days of celebrations. There’s fado – the wonderful songs of melancholy and longing peculiar to the Portuguese capital - there are nights of street parties, with sardines and sausages hissing on grills at every corner; there are dance competitions, parades and a mass wedding in the cathedral. But this is more than a story of sardines and sangria - we learn about life under the dictatorship of Dr. Salazar and the effect that the curiously named Carnation Revolution had on one man. 45, years ago Tony's father was one of the ‘Returnados’. After the fall of the Portuguese fascists, he was forced to leave his home and business in colonial Mozambique and found himself equally unwelcome in his native Lisbon. He made a new life in England and it's only on his death that his son discovers a clue to the secret that Paulo thought he had taken with him to the grave.

Deep in the summer of 2001, a new programme tiptoed out onto Radio 4. The concept was simple – book someone famous to talk about someone dead. Except there was a problem; famous people don’t talk much about someone else. In a world of the celebrity plug, getting voices to commit to a radio programme where they couldn’t talk about themselves was proving tough. Twelve slots to fill, and nobody signed up.
400 episodes later… Barbara Castle, Beryl Bainbridge, Bernard Manning, eventually everyone says yes. In this episode, Christopher Hitchens was so incensed by the presenter that he walked out. “You’re a bleeding Tory,” he said, “and always have been. Have you done? I have to be somewhere at one.”
Matthew Parris and original series producer Miles Warde go behind the scenes to find out how Great Lives was born. Featuring material never previously played - nominators and experts about their hopes and fears; archive of original presenters Joan Bakewell and Humphrey Carpenter; plus a special selection of the very best of Great Lives.
“There’s a joy in judging people by their choice of hero. It’s one reason Matthew Parris’s Great Lives series has run for 40 series.” Ben Preston, Radio Times editor, 2016.
Programme extracts also to include: Penelope Keith on Morecambe and Wise; Piers Morgan on W.G. Grace; Bernard Manning on Mother Teresa and Rosie Boycott on Ernest Shackleton.
Produced at BBC Bristol by Miles Warde.
Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra and first broadcast in December 2017.

8. Victory
John Reed's classic eye-witness account of the Russian Revolution in October 1917.
Trotsky has claimed victory over the Cossacks and Kerensky is asking for an armistice. Reed sets out once more for the front line with a driver who takes a dim view of American democracy, and finds himself up against the illiterate brutality of the Red Guard.
Dramatised by Robin Brooks.

4. Pamela Stephenson & John Lloyd on Not The Nine O’Clock News
TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.
In the next episode of What’s Funny About… Peter and Jon talk to John Lloyd and Dr Pamela Stephenson about their pioneering sketch show Not The Nine O’Clock News
Over 17 million viewers tuned in over 4 series to watch Pamela alongside Rowan Atkinson, Griff Rhys Jones, Mel Smith, and Chris Langham perform scripts written by some of the cream of British comedy talent – Richard Curtis, Andy Hamilton, and even a (then undergraduate!) Stephen Fry.
John Lloyd recalls how the NTNON team was put together, and how a chance meeting with Pamela at a party led to her becoming the one of the most recognisable faces on British television.
They talk us through some of their favourite sketches and reveal how they created their vast array of characters, from Gerald the Gorilla to Janet Street-Porter (and in particular, the interview that Pamela’s Janet did with Billy Connolly that would change both of their lives).
And John and Pamela discuss the perks and perils of commercial success in the world of comedy, when the business of books, albums, and movies come calling, and how it eventually led the end of Not The Nine O’Clock News.
With Peter and Jon as our guides, we’ll take the opportunity to ask quite how they went about making a great bit of TV comedy? Who came up with it? How did it get written? We’ll talk about the commissioning, the casting, and the reception the show received when it first aired.
We’ll do our very best to winkle out some backstage secrets straight from the horse’s mouth, as we hear the unvarnished truth from the people who were there, and who put these iconic shows on the telly.

Series 2
The Confession of Olivia Williams
Following the success of its inaugural series earlier this year and by popular demand, Stephen Mangan is back with the comedy chat show about shame and guilt.
Each week Stephen Mangan invites a different eminent guest into his virtual confessional box to make three 'confessions' to him. This is a cue for some rich and varied storytelling, and surprising insights as their confessions are put under the microscope.
We’re used to hearing celebrity interviews, where stars are persuaded to show off about their achievements and talk about their proudest moments. Stephen is not interested in that. He doesn’t want to know what his guests are proud of, he wants to know what they’re ashamed of. That’s surely the way to find out what really makes a person tick. Settle back for a stimulating journey through the realms of shame, regret, guilt and toe-curling embarrassment.
This week Stephen meets British and Hollywood screen actor Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense, The Crown)
Other guest in the series: Anthony Horowitz, Ed Byrne, Shaparak Khorsandi, Konnie Huq and David Quantick.
Written and presented by Stephen Mangan
With extra material by Nick Doody
Produced by Frank Stirling

FRI 14:15 John Reed - Ten Days That Shook the World (b098njdl)
10. The Conquest of Power
John Reed's classic eye-witness account of the Russian Revolution in October 1917.
The Bolsheviks have defeated the counter-revolution and are getting on with the business of government despite the threat of civil war. The abolition of all private ownership of land has won over the peasants and, for a moment, the Revolution seems to have accomplished its goals.
The Internationale is sung by Eiry Thomas.
Dramatised by Robin Brooks.
Director Alison Hindell.
BBC Cymru Wales production, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 2017.
FRI 14:30 The Stasi Jigsaw Puzzle (b01mkzgf)
The East German secret service, the Stasi, loved to keep records. It built up a library of hundreds of thousands of files on its own people. When the order came to destroy those files, in late 1989, there was so much paper to get through that the state's shredders collapsed under the pressure. They then resorted to using chemicals and burning and, finally, to simply tearing them up by hand, until ordinary people themselves stormed the Stasi buildings and rescued what they could. Amongst the files that were rescued, they found 16,000 sackfuls of torn up bits of paper.
A small group of people near Nuremberg has been painstakingly trying to put those bits of paper back together; but the task was going to take 400 years to complete.
An expert in image processing, Dr. Bertram Nikolay came forward with his E-puzzler prototype computer, which is being put through its paces. Dr. Nikolay says the E-puzzler will be able to read the scraps of paper and put them back together in just a few years.
In The Stasi Jigsaw Puzzle Chris Bowlby returns to Berlin, where he spent time as a student in the divided city, and meets the scientists hoping to rescue the destroyed Stasi paper archive. He also hears some disturbing audio archive which is being catalogued; there are stories from some of the Stasi's victims and we hear how, twenty years after the fall of the Berlin wall, the search for the truth within the archives is as important as ever.

Away with the Fairies
Dominic Arkwright asks why fairies, once threatening and scary meddlers in human affairs, have become innocent, pink and fluffy.
He's joined by Irish storyteller Eddie Lenihan, fairy illustrator and writer Faye Durston, and folklorist Juliette Wood. We hear how Eddie successfully campaigned to save an ancient hawthorn near Shannon Airport which was threatened by a new bypass. It was, he argued, the portal to the other world of the fairies of Munster. The tree still stands, though surrounded by cars on three sides.
Future editions include programmes on Glut, Japan, and Follow the Yellow Brick Road.

FRI 23:30 Sarah Kendall: Australian Trilogy (b08hnpms)
Series 1
Shaken
"This show is a story, and it's a big story. But it actually starts in one of my therapy sessions..."
In 1989, 13 and unpopular, Sarah misses the school bus. This prompts her to tell a lie and suddenly she finds herself the focal point of the entire community.
This show is as much about the art of storytelling as it is about a teenager's want to be popular. Sarah examines why stories are so important to her and she leaves us with a message from Ferris Bueller:
"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and move around once in a while, you could miss it"
Multi-award winning storyteller Sarah Kendall, continues her critically acclaimed trilogy of funny and moving, live shows to BBC Radio.
Taking her audience on a trip, Sarah gives a unique snapshot of small-town life in Australia in the early 90s.
At a time when most people were seeing Australians through the filter of 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours', Sarah's shows present a darker underbelly to the stereotype of the sun-loving, happy-go-lucky Aussie teenager.
Comedic and tragic in equal measure, Sarah's tales of her teenage life blend intricate narratives with a cast of memorable characters, bringing events to life in front of your very ears.
