SAT 02:30 Cold Water California (b048jfly)
With freezing waters and long dark winters, Ireland may seem an unlikely place to surf.
But the surfing industry is growing fast and may even aid recovery of recession hit coastal communities north and south of the border.
Mark Patterson has surfed for over 30 years, and is fascinated by the role the ocean is playing in replenishing small coastal towns like Portrush in Northern Ireland, and Bundoran in the Republic of Ireland. Once bustling seaside resorts, both have endured a long decline, taking a hard hit during the recession.
Now they are drawing a new crowd - surfers. Many come to learn the basics, while others travel from far overseas to sample Ireland's waves, considered by many to be world-class, on a par with anything found in Hawaii, Australia or California.
Mark learns that a few intrepid souls began to explore remote waves along Ireland's coastline in the early 1960's, sometimes dressed only in jeans and t-shirt as they braved the freezing waters. Now with modern wetsuits and affordable boards, everyone wants to learn.
In Bundoran, Mark meets the surfer instructor who feels the ocean saved his life. In Portrush, he meets a six time Irish surf champion with a lifestyle that nearly destroyed him. And then there are the surfers who risk their lives for the ultimate thrill - surfing monstrous waves up to 60 feet high.
It's not The Beach Boys, bronzed bodies or bikinis - this is Coldwater California.

The Bald Truth
For thousands of years, bald men have been the subject of ridicule. As a result they've felt ashamed and have resorted to desperate measures to hide their condition.
During the decades when hair style was a cultural battleground between youth and the establishment, the balding man was at the bottom of the heap. No prime minister since Clement Attlee has been bald.
But increasingly, bald men are coming out of the closet and shaving their heads - and some women too. Research shows that bald men are perceived as less attractive but more dominant. Now that we are more relaxed about hair style, and more willing to tolerate tonsorial diversity, are bald men finally able to shed the stigma? And could the comb-over finally make a come back?
Ian Marchant, who has shaved his head since the early 1980s, investigates.

The Great Vaccinator
Radiolab explores the work Maurice Hilleman, who created over 40 vaccines, including one for mumps. With Jad Abumrad.
Until now, the fastest vaccine ever made - for mumps - took four years. And while our current effort to develop a covid-19 vaccine involves thousands of people working around the clock, the mumps vaccine was developed almost exclusively by one person: Maurice Hilleman. Hilleman cranked out more than 40 other vaccines over the course of his career, including 8 of the 14 routinely given to children. He arguably saved more lives than any other single person. And through his work, Hilleman embodied the instincts, drive, and guts it takes to marshall the human body’s defenses against a disease. But through him we also see the struggle and the costs of these monumental scientific efforts.

SUN 15:30 Spellbound: Siouxsie and the Banshees (b01n9z0v)
As the bright white heat of punk faded few bands survived and emerged from the aftermath, stronger and more unique than Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Led by the unmistakable force of Siouxsie Sioux and bassist Steven Severin, the Banshees carved a musical legacy that is without parallel.
Originally meeting as part of the 'Bromley Contingent' that gravitated around punk pioneers The Sex Pistols, Susan Janet Ballion met Steven Bailey at a Roxy Music concert at Wembley in 1975, bonding over suburban boredom, a love of Bowie, Hitchcock and 'Cabaret' style nocturnal fun.
Armed with a handful of ideas, suburban isolation, borrowed equipment, the duo entered the furnace of punk intent on smashing down the established musical order and sculpting a dark and alluring legacy.
Miranda Sawyer talks to Siouxsie about the legendary gig at the infamous 100 Club as well as her and Steven Severin's part in TV folklore by appearing on the Today show where the Sex Pistol's Steve Jones and John 'Rotten' Lydon' swore at presenter Bill Grundy revealing to the nation the filth and the fury of punk rock.
Through Banshee's biographer and fan Mark Paytress, journalist Alexis Petridis and acclaimed producer Nigel Gray, Sawyer unearths how the band quickly bolted from the fading spark of punk and carved out an unparalleled legacy of five albums in five years.
From 1978's stark, Velvet Underground inspired 'The Scream' through band fall-outs, commercial and critical success, to the neo-psychedelic, post punk of 'Kaleidoscope', the hugely influencial dark wave 'JuJu' and the quixotic, exotic and erotic and 'A Kiss in the Dreamhouse' this a unique insight into a genre and era defying band.

As the patient is put under hypnosis, we 'enter' their mind, and all the various situations the hypnotherapist takes them through are played out for us to hear. Steve Waters - Saving the Blue
The Large Blue was always a magnificent and rare creature but, by the early 1970s, it was very nearly extinct.
That was when Professor Jeremy Thomas, then a PHD student, was tasked with saving this iconic butterfly. And yet their numbers were critically low even as he began.
Throughout the rest of the 1970s, he spent the summer months out in the field, at a secret location on Dartmoor, attempting to discover the reason for their decline and, if possible, to reverse it. As the population dwindled away, the professor became locked in an increasingly desperate race against time.
This ground breaking work has been enormously influential on conservation practice to this day, having profound consequences for other butterflies and for wider conservation practice. What started as one man, on his own, on the moors, has grown into a group of individuals and agencies whose ongoing work remains vitally important.
Steve Waters, inspired by this work, has invented the characters and settings in this delicate and essential drama.

Alec Baldwin explores the lives of the actress, Sarah Jessica Parker, and New York's Studio 54 nightclub founder, Ian Schrager.
Award-winning actor Alec Baldwin gives the listener unique entrée into the lives of artists, policy makers and performers. Alec sidesteps the predictable by taking listeners inside the dressing rooms, apartments, and offices.
After shooting the pilot for Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker told HBO she didn't want to go through with the project. But after the first day's taping, she says, she "didn't want to be anywhere else."
Ian Schrager is in the hospitality business. Hotels or nightclubs, uptown or downtown, Miami or Manhattan, Schrager defines luxury and leisure. In 1977, he co-founded Studio 54, which quickly became the epitome of the disco era.
Here's the Thing has its roots in public radio. In 2009, Alec joined with producers Lu Olkowski, Trey Kay, Kathie Russo, and Emily Botein to find fresh ways to engage in conversation on the radio. The group developed the idea of a new show that at its heart would look at what makes interesting people tick and create a platform for new and emerging ideas to be presented.

Reality and Metaphor
From the Garden of Eden to Monet's water lilies at Giverny - Penelope Lively considers the metaphorical garden.
Stephanie Cole begins this intimate meditation on gardening, literature and creativity.
Penelope Lively has always been a keen gardener. This book is partly a memoir of her own life in gardens: the large garden at home in Cairo where she spent most of her childhood, her Oxfordshire garden and the smaller urban garden in the North London home she lives in today.
In this intimate and eloquent work of narrative non-fiction, one of the UK's most cherished and admired writers uses the garden to break open the world for us, and examines how we might encourage our lives to bloom.

MON 14:15 'Cherry' Ingram: The Englishman who saved Japan's Blossoms (m0003ctm)
Episode 1
Collingwood Ingram, known as 'Cherry' after his defining life's work, was born in 1880 and lived to a 100 years old, witnessing a fraught century of conflict and change.
Ingram's interest was piqued by visits to Japan in 1902 and 1907, and further when he moved to The Grange in Benenden, Kent in 1919 and discovered two magnificent cherry trees in the neglected garden of his new family home. They reminded him of his Japanese trips and he fell in love with cherry blossoms - or sakura - dedicating much of his life to their cultivation and preservation.
On a further visit to Japan in 1926, to find new specimens and meet other experts, Ingram was shocked at the loss of local cherry diversity - a consequence of industrialisation and modernisation driven by the need to rebuild after a devastating earthquake destroyed vast areas of traditional housing. There was also an unsettling political undercurrent and pernicious ideology at work. A cloned cherry, the Somei-yoshino, was taking over the landscape and becoming the symbol of Japan's expansionist ambitions.
For Ingram, the most striking absence from the Japanese cherry scene was that of Taihaku, a brilliant ‘great white’ cherry tree. A proud example of this tree grew in his English garden and he swore to return it to its native home. Multiple attempts to send Taihaku scions back to Japan ended in failure, but Ingram persisted. Over decades, he became one of the world’s leading cherry experts and shared the joy of sakura both nationally and internationally. Every spring we enjoy his legacy.
‘Cherry’ Ingram is a portrait of this little-known Englishman, a story of Britain and Japan in the 20th century and an exploration of the delicate blossoms whose beauty is admired around the world.
In this opening episode, the author keeps seeing the name of Collingwood Ingram associated with the preservation of ancient cherries, and wants to find out more about this fascinating man.

Fear! Terror! Gut-wrenching Horror! Arg Arg. Please!
It's 1952, as usual.

Meanwhile the originals - having luckily escaped the blast by triggering the Mercurian metadrive thanks to an astonishingly angry outburst from Guuuurk - find themselves marooned in a strange forest which the Martian deduces is somewhere in the Crab Nebula.

Our heroes are slightly surprised when a number 43 bus to Highgate Woods arrives unexpectedly and they race to Piccadilly Circus to confront the professor and their doppelgangers.

TUE 14:30 The Flower Fields (b01nb02j)
There's a gold rush in Cornwall; it's been going on for over a century - producing the first flowers of spring, daffodils especially.
Like mining, it's marked the landscape, and there are networks of tiny fields west of Mousehole and in the Isles of Scilly. Smaller than tennis courts, they nestle, safe from the wind between high hedges, warm on south facing terraced cliffs. From these old flower fields, called quillets, came something even more valuable than the 'Golden Harvest' of early blooming daffodils - delicate Cornish violets, carnations and anemones. From Victorian times to the 1960s fragrant bunches of these sped overnight by
rail to reach the morning London markets.
Michael Bird - who lives in St Ives - listens while Bill Harvey works the plots his father tended. They are too small to admit machines and depend on the long-handled Cornish shovel. At Churchtown Farm on St Martins in the Scillies, Keith Low explains how the fields were created.
Michael walks the cliff gardens with the archaeologist Graeme Kirkham, who interprets the landscape they pass through, including the industry's mysterious skills and traditions. And he meets Bob Paterson at London’s Covent Garden market who remembers selling the violets and anemones that came on the Penzance trains, and hopes he might again.

The Emperor
Beethoven's fifth and final piano concerto, The Emperor is majestic and moving in equal measure.
Richard McMahon plays extracts and discusses the virtuosic it demands.

Concert pianist, James Rhodes, describes how The Emperor was central to his childhood and his developing love of Beethoven's piano music.
Music teacher and singer, Prue Hawthorne, recalls how her father (an amateur clarinetist) labouriously transcribed by hand the horn and clarinet sections of the first movement so they could play along with the record in their living room.
Also contributing is the renowned Beethoven biographer, John Suchet.
Concert pianist Richard McMahon has now retired as a teacher at the Royal Welsh School of Music and Drama.

What they will be doing is looking at the future of the relationship between Britain and India in fields such as politics, medicine, cricket, culture, cricket, trade, hospitality and cricket. Dymock Daffodils
Writer and naturalist Paul Evans visits the famous daffodils of Dymock.
This corner of north Gloucestershire is home to some of the very best wild daffodil spectacles in the British Isles, plants whose pale primrose flowers with egg-yolk trumpets spill over motorway verges, infiltrate hedgerows and crowd into copses for a few precious weeks in late March and early April.
The area is also famous for hosting a remarkable collection of poets just before the First World War, lured there by the idea of a rural idyll. Among them were Edward Thomas, who was killed in action, and the visiting American poet Robert Frost, whose verse, "The Road Not Taken" includes the well-known line "two roads diverged in a yellow wood". Was this perhaps a reference to the tides of Dymock daffodils?
Paul finds out from his guides Roy Palmer, folklorist and chairman of the Dymock Poets Society, and botanist Ray Woods, who reveals the resilience and also the vulnerability of this surprising flower, which is showing promise as a relief for dementia.
Blending literature, history and wildlife, Living World takes the poets' path into the heart of wild daffodil country in this unique corner of England and revels in the coming of spring.

WED 14:55 Tweet of the Day (m000lz6l)
Tweet Take 5 : Song Thrush
Perched high in a tree the song thrush has a varied and rather liquidescent call which can travel a far distance across the countryside. Listening to this song, more often a melody of two notes from the darkest days of winter, is a favourite of nature lovers and poets alike. With over 100 variations in song recorded, some have even described it as like following a small stream bubbling over uneven pebbles so providing an ever varied repertoire of sound twists and turns. For this extended version of Tweet of the Day we hear from Sir David Attenborough and from music philosopher David Rothenberg.

THU 07:30 Meet David Sedaris (m000tnr4)
Series 8
Instalment 3
What with the whole world grinding to a viral halt and everything, this special series of essays and diary entries is recorded at the Sussex home of the world-renowned storyteller.
In 2021, it's 25 years since David Sedaris first shared his very particular world view with the listeners to BBC Radio 4, having brought us The SantaLand Diaries back in 1996. In this eighth series of Meet David Sedaris, he continues to entertain with sardonic wit and incisive social critiques.
David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humour writers and, in 2019, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he's a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.
Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries, was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.
David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. His latest international best-selling book is a collection of stories entitled Calypso. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013.

THU 14:30 A Spring Clean Symphony (b01rlsv4)
Someone, somewhere, is scrubbing, wiping, brushing or zapping.
Love it or hate it, cleaning is part of our everyday lives and, in Spring in particular, there's a surge in cleaning activities as we throw open the windows and purge our lives of the accumulated winter grime.
In this composed feature, Nina Perry brings to light the rituals and personal stories of the spring clean and interweaves them with specially composed music.
How has cleaning changed over the generations? Is our attitude to cleaning nature or nurture? To what extent are our cleaning habits indicative of an inward state? And is cleaning about goodness, purity and perfection - or about living a healthy, germ free existence?
Nina rolls up her sleeves and spring cleans with her 96-year-old grandmother, Gwen. She speaks to Angela Levin about the significance of spring cleaning within the Jewish faith. And she asks Professor Sally Bloomfield and Dr Robert Aunger, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, what is "clean"?
