Episode 10
When on a summer’s day in 1967, Odelle Bastien climbs the steps of the Skelton gallery in London to take up a position as typist, she little realises how significantly her life is about to change. For there she meets the glamourous and enigmatic Marjorie Quick, who soon takes Odelle into her confidence and encourages her to pursue her dream of writing. But Odelle senses there is something that Quick is holding back, and when ‘Rufina and the Lion’, a lost Spanish masterpiece is brought to the gallery, Odelle begins to suspect that the mystery behind the painting’s origins and her mentor’s secrecy may be somehow connected.
The truth about ‘Rufina and the Lion’ lies in 1936 and a large house in rural Spain, where Olive Schloss, the daughter of renowned art dealer Harold Schloss and his beautiful but fragile wife Sarah, is harbouring artistic ambitions of her own. When artist and revolutionary Isaac Robles and his half-sister Teresa come into their lives, passion, art, and politics collide, with explosive and devastating consequences for them all.
Weaving between events in 1967 and those of 1936, a powerful story of love, obsession, identity, authenticity and deception unfolds in this highly anticipated new novel from Jessie Burton, author of the best-selling The Miniaturist.

The life and times of the great British roadworks, and those who dig and despair of them.
Reporter Sara Parker travels from Cumbria to London via the M25 seeking those for whom a freshly-dug hole in the road is a wonder and a delight but a source of desperation for road users and dwellers.
Copenhagen Street is allegedly Britain's most dug-up thoroughfare. It's in North London, and is regularly the subject of the attentions of gas, electricity and cable TV folk who just love to trouble its tarmac. Reporter Sara Parker hails a taxi on Copenhagen Street, where its driver actually lives and feels the rock-and-roll ride across the patchwork quilt of the capital's roads with an expert's commentary in her ears. Meanwhile, in the depths of a Lake District winter, Sara goes out on call with the boys from the blackstuff as they try to keep the hilly roads from cracking in the frost and being washed away by torrents. She joins the men training to dig a decent hole at a hole-in-the-road training centre whose instructor in his spare time loves nothing more than ballroom-dancing the night away while Strictly come digging by day. And out on the M25, the cones are out in force to protect the workforce from the speeding traffic.

Seventy Years in the Planning
Will Self walks the London green belt in search of the 1947 Town and Country Planning Act which optimistically tried to end the post-war British conflict between field and city.
He retraces a countryside ramble he took with his father, the journalist, town planner and political scientist Peter Self - a leading exponent of the principles enshrined in the '47 Act. Will argues that the public consensus to build a New Jerusalem has been squandered in the past seventy years, leading to the present day housing crisis.
He goes back to first principles and argues that the offer made in 1947 by the Minister of Town and Country Planning, Lewis Silkin to build a better Britain is as relevant today as it was then. Will says that if it was an opportunity missed, then the fault doesn't lie exclusively with the planning system, rather with our lack of desire to make the planning system work.

Tina C: Herstory
Episode 1
Country music star Tina C presents her life story, starting with her humble origins in deepest Tennessee and taking us all the way to where she stands today - a global feminist icon, and political powerhouse. And she can still knock out a tune or two too.
Tina will be joined on stage by a three-piece band who will help her recreate her biggest hits, and a special guest interviewer who will talk to her about her struggles.
In this first episode, Tina recalls her childhood. A humble start in life provides a rich seam of stories which fed into her early work. Family has always been important to Tina - as tracks like Hard Times, Don't Be Afraid to Start Crying, and Tramp on a Trampoline show.
From the moment her second album No Dick's As Hard As My Life was released, the world took notice of country music singer Tina C. Since then she has become a global brand. Following 9/11 she has been travelling the world 24/11 working for peace and being a poster girl for American democracy, selling that unique vision of hope to the rest of the world whether they want it or not. Seductive and persuasive, she is here to recruit you to her world view. She is the living embodiment (and what a body) of soft power. Tina C. has performed in venues all over the world, with her own TV show and five series on BBC Radio. You can run but you can't hide from Tina C.
Tina is the creation of Christopher Green, a multi-award winning writer and performer.

SUN 12:30 Paul Sinha's History Revision (b07fl6sk)
Series 2
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Paul Sinha returns for a second series of his History Revision, the show that uncovers the fascinating stories that we've forgotten in our onward march of progress. In the last series we learned how Alexander Graham Bell did NOT invent the telephone, and that the World Cup final of 2014 could only have happened because of the 1415 invasion of Morocco.
In this episode, Paul asks "How did we get here?", quite literally, getting the studio audience to tell him how they got to the BBC Radio Theatre, and then regaling them with stories from the history of transport. From the area of London that became a Russian train station, to the man who revolutionised both the motor industry and the music charts, to the names of airports around the world, this programme about the world of planes, trains and automobiles will provide fascinating facts and surprising stories (unless you listen on a weekend, when a bus replacement service is in operation).

In 'Falling for Francoise', he revisits Paris and the streets in which he first lost his heart and he talks to others who've suffered the same fate - the Hardy fan website curator, Yorkshireman Warren Gilbert; musician Ben Christophers, who's written songs for the mature Francoise; journalist Laura Barton, who's besotted with the whole French 60s 'ye ye' scene... and in a real coup, John gets to meet the singer herself, falling for Francoise all over again!

SUN 22:30 I, Regress (b01bb70f)
Series 1
Episode 5
A dark, David Lynch-ian comedy, ideally suited for an unsettling and surreal late night listen. 'I, Regress' sees Matt Berry (The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, Snuff Box) playing a corrupt and bizarre hypnotherapist taking unsuspecting clients on twisted, misleading journeys through their subconscious.
Each episode sees the doctor dealing with a different client who has come to him for a different problem (quitting smoking, fear of water, etc). As the patient is put under hypnosis, we 'enter' their mind, and all the various situations the hypnotherapist takes them through are played out for us to hear. The result is a dream- (or nightmare-) like trip through the patient's mind, as funny as it is disturbing.
Ep 5: Dr Berry's latest patient, Christian Parcel (Nick Lucas) finds himself in the worst place on the planet thanks to some 'experimental hypnotherapy'. But events take a twist that even Dr Berry himself finds hard to control, thanks to a football pitch, a nightclub and a very unusual tattoo...
The cast across the series include Katherine Parkinson (IT Crowd), Morgana Robinson (The Morgana Show), Simon Greenall (I'm Alan Partridge), Jack Klaff (Star Wars, For Your Eyes Only), Tara Flynn (The Impressions Show, Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle), Alex Lowe (Barry From Watford, The Peter Serafinowicz Show), and Derek Griffiths (Playschool, Bod, and The Royal Exchange).
A compelling late night listen: tune in and occupy someone else's head!

MON 14:30 White Stiletto Dreams (b01ks8v7)
Romford Market was vibrant in the 1980s. Now it is struggling to survive - a victim of supermarkets and cut-price stores.
Presenter Cathy FitzGerald bought her first - and last - pair of white stilettos in the market as a teenager. David Eldridge worked on the shoe stall. He's now one of Britain's leading playwrights, with credits that include In Basildon at the Royal Court and Market Boy, a play about Romford that premiered at the National Theatre. Selling espadrilles isn't obvious training for a playwright, but in the 1980s the market was a stage.
There were the characters (the Fruit & Veg Man, the Leather Boys, and the Lampshade Man) and the dialogue - bantering with the customers was rude, funny, and definitely an art. Cathy and David return to Romford to weigh up what's been lost - and see if the stiletto still fits.

Professor Jerry Brotton, one of the UK's leading experts on cultural exchange, examines Queen Elizabeth I's fascination with the Orient. He shows that England's relations with the Muslim world were far more extensive, and often more amicable, than we have ever appreciated, and that their influence was felt across the political, commercial and domestic landscape of Elizabethan England.
Derek Jacobi reads the captivating account of how Britain sent ships, treaties and gifts to the royal families of Morocco and Turkey, including a gold carriage and a full-size pipe organ.
In this episode, one merchant voyage ends in tragedy when the English crew are captured and turned into galley slaves.

Dr Kat Arney meets the people trying to change the world one map at a time. These are volunteers who use their free time to map the world's unmapped places and people.
She sees how being on a map affects people's work, education and rights. And in extreme weather or after a natural disaster, she hears how mappers might help us to find the people who have fallen off the maps. She also hears from crisis mappers, people who source any information they can after tragedies to document what is happening on the ground as fast as possible.
This story starts in January 2010, when a huge earthquake hit the island nation of Haiti. Thousands of miles away, a group of American students heard about the damage, logged onto their laptops and started mapping any post-disaster information they could find online. Their aim was to help the rescue and relief services save as many lives as possible.
Four years on, international contingents of cartographers now deploy after every natural disaster, and in areas of political unrest and civil war. They scour the internet for cries for help on social media, then mark them on maps to try to get help to people who need it most.
There's also a project making a continual effort to make the most accurate physical map of the globe. Contributing could mean joining a mapping party in London. Or cycling around rural Uganda with a GPS device.
Thousands of volunteers are now spending their spare time contributing to these efforts. Some of those who started it all have become internationally recognised in a new area of expertise. As volunteers assemble around the world, Dr Kat Arney asks how powerful these maps can be and also assesses the problems that come with them.
Produced by Clare Salisbury and Jolyon Jenkins.

Dido's Lament
Series exploring famous pieces of music and their emotional appeal.
Dido's Lament is a popular name for a famous aria, 'When I am laid in earth', from the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell, with the libretto by Nahum Tate. Mezzo soprano Sarah Connolly talks about why she finds the piece, sung by the likes of Janet Baker and Emma Kirkby, so extraordinary, and the skill it takes to perform it. Composer and cellist Philip Shepperd's musical life was transformed when he was part of the rock singer Jeff Buckley's performance of the piece at the 1995 Meltdown Festival.

WED 08:00 The Missing Hancocks (b08hnpmg)
Series 3
A Holiday in France
The Missing Hancocks recreates those episodes of the classic Hancock's Half Hour that have been wiped or lost from the archive. Something else has gone missing in this episode from the second series - the lad 'imself, who had absconded to Rome. In 1955, he was replaced for the first three episodes by the Goon Show's Harry Secombe. In this recreation, he has been replaced by Andy Secombe - Harry's son. Not heard since then, this is a real piece of comedy history.
The first modern sitcom, Hancock's Half Hour made stars of Tony Hancock, Sid James and Kenneth Williams, and launched Ray Galton and Alan Simpson on one of the most successful comedy-writing partnerships in history. But 20 episodes of the show are missing from the BBC archives. Now, after two highly successful series, another five of those episodes have been lovingly re-recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC Radio Theatre.
A Holiday In France:
Harry Secombe and Bill leave for a holiday in Southend but they get on the wrong train and end up in Paris where they first meet Andree.
Written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, and with the classic score newly recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra, the show stars Andy Secombe, Kevin Eldon, Simon Greenall, Robin Sebastian and Susy Kane. A Holiday In France was first broadcast on the 19th April, 1955.
Produced by Ed Morrish & Neil Pearson.

WED 14:30 Walter Kershaw: The UK's First Street Artist? (b01mk8zs)
Years before the super-cool graffiti of Banksy and his ilk, guerrilla art was being pioneered on condemned buildings in Rochdale. Walter Kershaw brightened up bridges, transformed toilets and glorified gable-ends. His work was large scale. Poppies the size of a house and a portrait of Alvin Stardust that covered an old shop (it WAS the 1970s).
Kershaw's art upset local authorities but delighted many locals. Wherever he painted he drew a crowd and soon residents were requesting him to paint their houses. He sought no fee and knew that his work would fade or be bulldozed, but he persisted. There were no slogans, no protests and nothing overtly political. This really was art for art's sake.
Mark Hodkinson, who grew up around Rochdale, meets Walter and takes him back to his old haunts. He meets Walter's accomplices and the art historians who put his work in context. He discovers what makes Walter tick and what he thinks of the current crop of graffiti artists.

THU 14:30 The Art of Home (b03y36w2)
How does an artist's sense of home shape and direct their work? Do they need to be rooted in a familiar place where ideas and have personally been shaped? Or can being cast far from home galvanise an artist's work, giving them a fresh perspective?
Author Rosie Dastgir explores the importance of roots and home on the work of an artist in this authored programme. She meets different artists from diverse places across Britain.
Clio Barnard is one of Britain's rising filmmakers and her work made Rosie wonder about her roots and sense of place. Much of Barnard's film work is centred in Yorkshire and her movies The Arbour and the latest, BAFTA nominated The Selfish Giant reflect a social realism that could only come from an intimate knowledge of the area.
Going home to Wolverhampton, was something that Sathnam Sanghera felt compelled to do to write his funny and moving memoir The Boy with the Top Knot - as he had learnt his father was a schizophrenic, explaining some of his family's strange behaviour while he was growing up. The memoir takes him on an extraordinary journey from his father's harsh life in rural Punjab to the steps of the Wolverhampton Tourist Office.
Simon Stevens is an award-winning playwright. His writing is characterised as part of a new generation of gritty realism and is widely performed, not only in the UK but also throughout Europe. His work and writing grapple with his past of growing up on the streets of Stockport. The playwright believes that writers and artist invariably reflect back on their past, hoping to resolve conflict, upheaval and other events - a futile endeavour but, as we hear, an exercise that has resulted in some wonderful creative energy.

Lt-Gen Sir Graeme Lamb, former head of British special forces, champions the life of wartime spy Christine Granville, assisted by her biographer Clare Mulley.
Christine, born Kristina Skarbek, was a glamorous swashbuckling heroine who skied into occupied Poland to distribute Allied propaganda, and parachuted into southern France to work with the Resistance after D Day. Murdered after the war by a jilted lover, she is little known today - thanks partly to the efforts of a group of men she had been close to, who formed a committee to "protect her reputation" from suggestions of sexual impropriety.

Food
iGOD is a highly original and funny new late-night comedy series for Radio 4. It stars Simon Day (The Fast Show) and David Soul (Starsky & Hutch) and is written by one of the head writers of the BAFTA award-winning The Thick Of It, Sean Gray and produced by Simon Nicholls (Ed Reardon's Week / News At Bedtime).
We all worry about the end of the world, as economists and environmentalists speak in apocalyptic terms everyday. iGOD says that trying to predict the end of the world is as pointless as moisturising an elephant's elbow.
In each episode, an unnamed, all-seeing narrator (David Soul - Starsky and Hutch) shows us that it is stupid to be worrying, as he looks back at some of the most entertaining apocalypses on parallel Earths. Each week our case study is a normal bloke called Ian (Simon Day) who manages to accidentally initiate the apocalypse of a different parallel world through a seemingly harmless single act (telling a lie, being lazy, cooking some lambshanks). A succession of comic vignettes ensue that escalate to the end of a parallel world.
With a full-range of sound effects and wonderfully funny and surreal twists, iGOD will be a true aural extravaganza.

Rachel Parris: Austensibly Feminist
Comedian Rachel Parris, a Jane Austen fan and geek, assesses one of our greatest writer's feminist credentials.
Although Jane Austen wrote about a particular class of women at a particular period in our history , the portraits she drew have resonated with millions of subsequent readers. But rarely is she considered from a feminist perspective.
In this stand-up comedy show recorded in front of a live, virtual audience, Rachel Parris asks us to re-appraise Jane Austen's work and see it in a new light. Albeit a little irreverently.
Do Austen's books pass the Bechdel test? What do her sisters tell us about the sisterhood? What have her women got in common with women today and what can we learn from what Jane Austen had to say about marriage, men and money?

FRI 14:30 The Map That Made Manhattan (b04fy2bq)
Over two hundred years since the beginning of its construction, this feature explores the New York grid system as real and imagined - architectural matrix, psychic space and site of continuing cultural-political argument.
The Commissioners' Plan of 1811 divided the island of Manhattan into an orthogonal grid of intersecting avenues running North-South and cross-streets running East-West, from river to river. Attacked for being nothing more than "a grid of money making", it was in fact a great democratic leveller. And if it fostered what de Tocqueville viewed as relentless monotony, its coordinates also enabled drivers and pedestrians to figure out where they stood, physically and metaphorically.
The debate continues. Urban critic Tony Hiss ('In Motion: The Experience of Travel') has written about the grid's primal orderliness: "I still think it distances us from our natural surroundings and it has given us a spurious and diminished mental geometry".
Condemned for dehumanizing and mechanising the city's inhabitants (Henry James, writing in the grid-free enclave of Greenwich Village, called it "a primal topographic curse") others saw it as a modern, rational system in step with the ethos of a young republic.
And New Yorkers themselves are of course a great source of wit and comment on the grid system.
Filled with the sounds and atmosphere of New York, and hearing entirely from its residents - from city architects and historians to taxi drivers and subway engineers - this programme considers the geometry of the grid as the brilliant intersection of architectural vision with psychic and cultural space, and as footprint for the awesome city skyline.
