London, 1543. A serial killer prowls the city, each death worse than the last - but what links the victims?

While pursuing a lead, Shardlake has been stabbed by an unknown attacker in a crowded street.
Shardlake must also attend to another pressing case, that of a young man driven mad by the conviction that he is damned and that the Lord has forsaken him.

The first act signed to David Geffen's Asylum Records in the early 1970s, Judee Sill produced two astonishingly beautiful albums in her lifetime.
Seemingly emerging from the Laurel Canyon scene, her music wove a diverse tapestry of influences - from gospel piano to Bach, rhythm and blues to country, forty-part vocal harmonies blending into piano ballads...
So why did Judee Sill disappear from view? Ruth Barnes traces Judee's peculiar life story - hearing tales of armed robberies, reform school and addiction, alongside musical invention and heartstopping songs.
With contributions from family, friends, lovers and devotees of her music including JD Souther, XTC's Andy Partridge, Jim Pons, Tommy Peltier and 'Whispering' Bob Harris.

SAT 05:30 Love in Recovery (m0002bnn)
Series 3
The Gun
Third series of the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous. Written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery. Stars Rebecca Front, John Hannah, Sue Johnston, Paul Kaye and Johnny Vegas.
Love in Recovery follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Johnny Vegas is Andy, the sweet but simple self-appointed group leader. Sue Johnston plays straight talking Julie, who's been known to have the odd relapse here and there - and everywhere. Rebecca Front is the snobby and spiky Fiona, an ex-banker who had it all and then lost the lot. John Hannah is Simon, a snide journalist who’s not an alcoholic – he got caught drink driving, his boss made him attend the meeting, but he fell in love with Fiona and stayed. And, despite her best efforts, she fell in love with him too. Paul Kaye is Danno, a down and out two-bit chancer with a shady past but a lot of heart, who’s desperate to turn his life around.
As we follow their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and, most importantly, tell their stories.
In episode six, it’s a big day for Simon (John Hannah). The most important, nerve wracking day of his life. But whether he gets everything he ever wanted or loses it all, his friends will be there to pick up the pieces. Won’t they?
Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.

Alternative Comedy...and Beyond
Instead of guest Comedy Controllers, choosing their comedy favourites, it is now the turn of those who, in their own ways, have to take the blame for many of the shows often featured on Radio 4 Extra. Between them, Paul Jackson, Beryl Vertue, John Lloyd & Jimmy Mulville have well over a 150 years of gut-busting, side-aching woofers, gags and - let's be honest - the occasional horrific mistimed silence.
In front of an audience in the iconic Radio Theatre in Broadcasting House - the home of British Radio comedy - they reveal why they do it and what it was (and is) that made them laugh.
Programme 3. Alternative Comedy... and Beyond - in which the Real Comedy Controllers return to the 80s to consider how alternative the new wave of comedy was... and to explore how their humour developed as the century drew to a close. Episodes featured include:

London, 1543, the freezing cold spring is marked by turmoil and darkness. The city's streets are filled with preachers. Radical religion has spilled over into dangerous fundamentalism as young men are maddened by differing interpretations of the Bible. Where the monasteries once acted as gatekeepers to God, the Lord now seems to be very close at hand. Strange signs and portents are observed that suggest the end times are near.
As King Henry VIII slips back towards the old religion, the reactionaries are fighting back: radicals are being arrested, heretics threatened with burning and everyone is looking over their shoulder, including Archbishop Cranmer. Into this unsettled landscape comes a murderer who appears to be killing for pleasure. Worse still, his first victim was someone close to Catherine Parr - the King's latest romantic obsession. Their marriage would serve the Reformist cause well and, to protect her chances of becoming Queen, Cranmer wants news of the killer kept from the superstitious King.
And so he calls upon lawyer detective Matthew Shardlake to conduct a secret investigation. Once again, Shardlake and his loyal assistant Barak must descend into the murky depths of Tudor society to try to stop the murderer before they strike again.

Dame Wendy Hall
From Adele to Handel.
Computer scientist Dame Wendy Hall shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young
Fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society, Dame Wendy fought long and hard to prove that her type of web science was highly significant and here to stay. If algebraic topology and open hypermedia systems really aren't your thing, Dame Wendy is also in demand as a brilliant communicator on, what can seem to outsiders to be, impenetrable topics.
Her parents were from humble beginnings and it was clear from the get-go that their first born had a budding flair for numbers: aged six she was charged with teaching a group of schoolmates maths. The first in her family to go to University she rejected Cambridge, judging it "too stuffy".
She says, "I get too excited about stuff. I love my life and am passionate about web science, women in science and shopping".
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2014.

SUN 13:00 Great Lives - 400 and Counting (b09hw6j5)
From Leon Trotsky to Morecambe and Wise - Matthew Parris on the rows, revelations and rank incompetence behind 400 editions of Great Lives.
Deep in the summer of 2001, a new programme tiptoed out onto Radio 4. The concept was simple – book someone famous to talk about someone dead. Except there was a problem; famous people don’t talk much about someone else. In a world of the celebrity plug, getting voices to commit to a radio programme where they couldn’t talk about themselves was proving tough. Twelve slots to fill, and nobody signed up.
400 episodes later …. Barbara Castle, Beryl Bainbridge, Bernard Manning, eventually everyone says yes. David Attenborough chose a man who first drew a flea, George Osborne the king who taxed the non-doms. Then there was Christopher Hitchens, so incensed by the presenter that he walked out. “You’re a bleeding Tory,” he said, “and always have been. Have you done? I have to be somewhere at one.”
Matthew Parris and original series producer Miles Warde go behind the scenes to find out how Great Lives was born. Featuring material never previously played - nominators and experts about their hopes and fears; archive of original presenters Joan Bakewell and Humphrey Carpenter; plus a special selection of the very best of Great Lives.
“There’s a joy in judging people by their choice of hero. It’s one reason Matthew Parris’s Great Lives series has run for 40 series.” Ben Preston, Radio Times editor, 2016.
Programme extracts also to include: Penelope Keith on Morecambe and Wise; Michael Sheen on Philip K Dick; Grace Dent on Nancy Mitford; Brian Sewell on Mad King Ludwig of Bavaria; Maureen Lipmann on Cicely Saunders.
Produced at BBC Bristol by Miles Warde.
Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra and first broadcast in December 2017.

Episode 6
Gripping adaptation of C. J. Sansom's bestselling Tudor crime novel, the fourth in the series featuring lawyer detective Matthew Shardlake.
London, 1543. A serial killer is prowling the city, one who treats murder as a holy mission: preying upon radicals and creating gory tableaux inspired by a prophecy from the Book of Revelation. Archbishop Cranmer has asked Shardlake to conduct a secret investigation to catch the killer before word of the bloodshed reaches the King: one of the victims was close to Catherine Parr, Henry's current romantic obsession, and an ally of the reformers cause; Cranmer knows that such a taint will ruin any chance of her becoming Queen.
As the number of victims mounts, Shardlake and his trusty side-kick Barak are constantly wrong-footed - how does the killer know exactly what they plan to do next? Is there an informant amongst Cranmer's staff?
And Shardlake must also attend to another pressing case, that of a young man, Adam Kite, driven mad by the conviction that he is damned and that the Lord has forsaken him. Adam is being held in the Bedlam for his own safety - his wild rants about damnation verge on heresy - but Shardlake hopes his friend Guy the Apothecary can help to ease his suffering.

MON 14:30 Change of Art (b015zm9b)
Public artist Andrew Shoben explores a controversial new idea to 'rotate or retire' public artworks.
The last three decades have seen a flourishing of public art in our towns and cities with works adorning every new housing estate, shopping centre or local park. But what was bold and innovative in the eighties may now seem tired, decrepit or meaningless. In a bid to refresh our cities and rescue 'orphaned' works, Andrew sets out to explore the arguments around relocating more of our artworks.
In Trafalgar Square he examines the Fourth Plinth phenomenon with Sandy Nairne of the National Portrait Gallery, and a trip to Antony Gormley's studio reveals the artist's hopes for his most famous creation, Angel of the North. Andrew also visits the Cass Sculpture Park in Sussex where owner, Sir Wilfred Cass, offers works from top sculptors. We hear from local authority art departments about the process of commissioning and de-commissioning work for our communities.
There's a historical precedent too. Italians weren't afraid of moving their public art around, or retiring it and replacing it with something else. Donatello's Judith and Holofernes was moved around Florence three times between 1455 and 1505, before it was replaced with Michaelangelo's David.
With his company Greyworld, Andrew has created public artworks for several UK cities, including the robotic bust close to the Tate Modern in London. But who decides how long his works, or any artworks in the public realm should occupy their space?
Tasting his own medicine Andrew speaks to people passing one of his own sculptures to find out if they love it or if they'd prefer that it be replaced by something, anything else.

Gillian Reynolds - Audiophile
Gillian Reynolds has been a professional writer about radio for fifty years and, for Archive on 4, unearths the voices that have echoed through her life as critic and broadcaster on commercial and BBC radio.
Gillian's love affair with the medium started when she was a child growing up in pre-war Liverpool. The first real characters to make an impact on her were those legendary Second World War voices like Lord Haw-Haw, Nazi propagandist William Joyce, Mrs Mopp, from Tommy Handley’s madcap wartime show ITMA, and Band Waggon star Arthur Askey.
But in a lifetime of listening and reviewing, initially for the Guardian but for four decades at the Daily Telegraph, Gillian Reynolds has always kept pace with what’s new on the broadcasting block – from the advent of commercial radio in the 1970s, the BBC Gulf War station cobbled together at short notice (popularly known as ‘Scud FM’) which inspired Radio 5Live, or the latest American podcast sensations that have been making recent headlines for audio.
Gillian spices her show with brand new interviews with a handful of her contemporaries, heroes and friends. Sue MacGregor (of The Reunion, Today, Woman’s Hour and The World at One), Dame Jenny Abramsky (who retired as BBC Director of Radio in 2008), Nick Pollard (Gillian’s colleague at commercial Radio City, and later a senior figure at ITN and Sky News) and Jimmy Gordon (who founded Clyde FM) join Gillian to capture the seismic changes in radio during her lifetime and its unquenchable, irresistible appeal even in the clamorous age of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

For the architect, they're also astonishing artefacts, little cities of architectural fantasy of amazing diversity; some of the greatest architects in the world from Lutyens to Norman Foster have built animal houses.

WED 14:30 Ibiza: Britain's Balearic Soul (b013r76j)
The island of Ibiza has subtly influenced British youth culture and the nation's night-time economy for well over 20 years.
The Balearic attitude to nightlife and entertainment was first adopted in Britain during the late 80s and soon many young Brits would no longer be divided by class, race, football allegiances or even sexuality, instead becoming united by their devotion to house music, recreational drug taking and warehouse parties or raves.
By the mid-90s, millions of ordinary young people spent their weekends 'dancing on drugs' and, as alcohol sales dropped and customers fell away, the licensed leisure industry replaced so-called spit 'n' sawdust pubs with more modern bars while bottled beers and alcopops became the new drinks of choice. With Radio 1 broadcasting live from the world's house music clubs, dance music culture moved into the mainstream and has stayed there ever since.
Dr Kate O'Brien meets those at the heart of these changes. Internationally celebrated DJ Paul Oakenfield shares with Kate his first experience in Ibiza and how he tried to recreate the island's bohemian, hedonistic party scene, while Radio 1's Pete Tong explains how he pushed the station into being part of this unrelenting youth movement.
Kate also hears from a former Chief Constable on his struggle to manage 40,000 party-goers at an all-night rave, and experts on alcohol and drug consumption tell how society and government reacted to the 'normalisation' of recreational drug taking and young people's determined move away from the limitations of licensed premises over two decades.
The history of British dance culture and clubbing is complex and fascinating, and Kate explores its impact on young people's identities and lifestyles since the late 1980s

In between being interrupted by geese, Mark asks the people gathered on the grass in the RSC's outdoor performance area on the banks of the River Avon, just by the church where Shakespeare is buried, across from the Shakespeare ice-cream boat, not far from the Hamlet statue, if they've noticed any sort of theme to the place.
Mark also looks at what else Stratford has to offer and visits the Butterfly Farm, the Tudor World museum and he discovers that the town was also once the home of the Teletubbies.

Listen Against is the comedy that takes the back off your radio and television, fiddles round with the programmes inside and then puts them all back the wrong way round.
Using "beautifully crafted, scalpel sharp" (Gillian Reynolds) mash-ups of current and archive programmes Listen Against creates a "sly, sharp, smart, surreal, satirical" world (Sunday Telegraph) where Alice Arnold and Jon Holmes look back in amplitude of at a week's worth of broadcasting like a media tapeworm going through a dog.
Like "the mischievous offspring of Points of View and The Day Today" (Observer) fictional listeners bombard Listen Against with fictional letters and emails complaining about half-fictional programmes while fictional guests and real life presenters (this series includes Melvyn Bragg, Jeremy Vine and Vanessa Feltz) argue with each other in "a gem of a satirical swoop at radio and television." Radio 4's word-obsessed comedy panel game - with stars from across the world of wordplay coming together to score points off each other, under the well-read eye of chairman Gyles Brandreth.
Former linguistics student Josh Widdicombe tells us about his favourite West Country words, lexicographer Susie Dent predicts some of the new words that might enter the dictionary this year and astronomy enthusiast Helen Keen reveals her favourite words from the language of outer space.
The letter of the week is 'L'. Josh has to guess what the World War 2 slang term 'latrinogram' meant; Natalie Haynes explains the American expression 'log-rolling'; Susie Dent gets full marks for explaining where the phrase 'limbo dancing' comes from and in a Germanic twist Helen Keen is asked under what circumstances you would act like a 'liver sausage'.
The panellists are asked to invent new words or phrases. Their new offerings include 'Antandecophobia'; 'smellationship'; the 'Josh number' and 'agony hooves'.
In a round about derogatory terms for different occupations Natalie has to guess what a 'nutbuster' is; Susie a 'needle-dodger'; Helen a 'knob thatcher' and Josh a 'honey-dipper'.
They then coin their own terms of abuse including bikopaths, fobslotch, nerds of prey and chattypedia.
Finally the panellists are asked what four Victorian slang terms meant: widdling, muffin-worry, lully-prigger and hock-dockies.

FRI 14:30 The Day of the Jackal (b011v1bl)
The seminal thriller The Day of the Jackal was first published in 1971. Patrick Humphries explores just what made the book so riveting for him and so ground-breaking for a whole generation of thriller writers influenced by its author, Frederick Forsyth.
The Day of the Jackal was extraordinary for many reasons. For a start it broke so many of the 'rules' of thriller writing in that the assassin has no name, the story seamlessly mixes fact and fiction, the tools of the killer's trade are explored in considerable detail and the outcome of the story is known right from the start of the narrative. Harold Harris, Forsyth's editor at publisher Hutchinson and Co, noted all these new departures but still commissioned Forsyth for three novels of which the first was The Day of the Jackal, followed by The Odessa File and The Dogs of War.
The eponymous Jackal is a mercenary and in the novel he is hired by a real-life terrorist group, Organisation de l'Armee Secrete, whose members were intent on killing the French President Charles De Gaulle. The OAS wanted to retain Algeria as a French colony, and when de Gaulle reneged on his emotional avowal 'Vive l'Algerie francaise' ie 'Long Live French Algeria', and allow self-determination, he became the target of OAS assassins. Of course, as history proves, those assassins were never successful, though not for want of trying. Forsyth lived through those difficult times for French democracy as a Reuters correspondent in Paris and so it was an obvious choice of setting for his first attempt at thriller writing.
Patrick talks to an editor at Hutchinson, Tony Whittome, Professor of Modern English Literature John Sutherland, OAS expert Clement Steuer, writers Lee Child, Andrew Rosenheim, Sam Bourne and the Jackal's author, Frederick Forsyth.
