Series 3
Making Plans
Third series of the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous. Written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery. Stars Rebecca Front, John Hannah, Sue Johnston, Paul Kaye and Johnny Vegas.
Love in Recovery follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Johnny Vegas is Andy, the sweet but simple self-appointed group leader. Sue Johnston plays straight talking Julie, who's been known to have the odd relapse here and there - and everywhere. Rebecca Front is the snobby and spiky Fiona, an ex-banker who had it all and then lost the lot. John Hannah is Simon, a snide journalist who’s not an alcoholic – he got caught drink driving, his boss made him attend the meeting, but he fell in love with Fiona and stayed. And, despite her best efforts, she fell in love with him too. Paul Kaye is Danno, a down and out two-bit chancer with a shady past but a lot of heart, who’s desperate to turn his life around.
As we follow their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and, most importantly, tell their stories.
In episode five, talk turns to weddings. What’s it like to go to a wedding as a recovering alcoholic? As usual, the answers are far from simple and the experiences of the group couldn’t be more different.
Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.

SAT 09:00 The Real Comedy Controllers: The Things That Made Us Laugh (b08kbct7)
Satire and Sitcoms
Instead of guest Comedy Controllers, choosing their comedy favourites, it is now the turn of those who, in their own ways, have to take the blame for many of the shows often featured on Radio 4 Extra. Between them, Paul Jackson, Beryl Vertue, John Lloyd and Jimmy Mulville have well over a 150 years of gut-busting, side-aching woofers, gags and - let's be honest - the occasional horrific mistimed silence.
In front of an audience in the iconic Radio Theatre in Broadcasting House - the home of British Radio comedy - they reveal why they do it and what it was (and is) that made them laugh.
The Real Comedy Controllers travel back to the 1960s and 70s to celebrate the satire boom... to trace the development of sitcoms both here and abroad... and to remember the golden years of BBC Entertainment. Featuring:

Martha Lane Fox
From Judy Garland to Verdi.
Dot-com millionaire and businesswoman Martha Lane Fox shares her castaway choices with Sue Lawley.
Martha says that as a child she was confident and bossy - tormenting her younger brother and, in games of teachers and pupils, always marking him lower than her line of teddy bears. Her drive and ambition were recognised at school and college - her brother claims her nickname was 'Fast Lane Foxy'.
After studying modern and classical history at Oxford University she became a management consultant at a small company and met Brent Hoberman - who had the idea for lastminute.com. Initially, Lane Fox rubbished the idea, but eventually Brent convinced her and she joined him, appropriately enough, at the last minute. The pair launched lastminute.com in 1998 - it started out as an online bucket shop - selling the holidays that small travel agents couldn't get rid of - and branched out into entertainment and gifts.
On March 14th, 2000, days before the markets peaked, lastminute.com was floated on the stock exchange - and over the following weeks prices collapsed. Martha Lane Fox became the face, the figurehead and eventually the fall-girl for the dot-com bubble. In November 2003, after lastminute.com announced a profit for the first time, Lane Fox announced she was resigning as managing director.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2004.

Hope and Glory
True stories told live in in the USA: Meg Bowles introduces stories of determination, hope and battling for both survival and respect.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

How to Write a Poem 2/2
Daljit Nagra explores the BBC's radio poetry archive and selects part 2 of How to Write a Poem featuring the poet Glyn Maxwell.
Glyn Maxwell is in a strange village. He’s been invited there to teach a poetry masterclass at a literature festival with some impressive names on the line-up. Could that really be John Keats reading in the back room of the pub? Is that John Clare wandering the lanes? Is Emily Dickinson really doing a Q&A in the village hall? And isn't that Lord Byron propping up the bar?
With Glyn are three new poets - Holly Corfield Carr, Victoria Adukwei Bulley and Dominic Fisher - who share their poems-in-progress. The students put their questions on writing directly to the greats and Glyn shares his own advice on writing better poetry – from facing the blank page and developing ideas, to the intricacies of rhyme, metre, form and line break.
All words spoken by Keats, Clare, Dickinson and Byron are taken verbatim from their poems, letters and diaries.
Barmaid - Sally Phillips
Emily Dickinson - Amy Rose
Lord Byron - Adam Harley
Student Poets - Holly Corfield Carr, Victoria Adukwei Bulley, Dominic Fisher
Written and presented by Glyn Maxwell.

As part of the Hogarth Shakespeare project authors of international standing have been invited to select a play and to write a contemporary version of it as a novel. Anne Tyler's response to The Taming of the Shrew is set in Baltimore where Dr Battista, an obsessively dedicated scientist, lives with his two daughters Kate and Bunny.
He spends most of his waking hours at the lab where he is assisted by a brilliant young researcher called Pyotr. But Pyotr’s three year visa is set to expire in a few weeks and fearful that it will not be renewed Dr Battista has suggested that his eldest daughter Kate might marry Pyotr and resolve the situation to everyone’s satisfaction – except hers.
After all it’s not as if Kate has a boyfriend or a bevy of admirers like her pretty sister, Bunny.
Kate Battista has agreed to marry her father’s research assistant Pyotr, so that he can stay on in the US to assist in Dr Battista’s experiments. Kate is not very sure about the enterprise but she has committed herself to helping out her father .
Anne Tyler's previous novels include Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant (1983), The Accidental Tourist (1985) and Breathing Lessons (1988). All three were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with Breathing Lessons winning the prize for 1989. She has also won the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize, the Ambassador Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. In 2012 she was awarded The Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence.

Episode 1
London, 1543, the freezing cold spring is marked by turmoil and darkness. The city's streets are filled with preachers. Radical religion has spilled over into dangerous fundamentalism as young men are maddened by differing interpretations of the Bible. Where the monasteries once acted as gatekeepers to God, the Lord now seems to be very close at hand. Strange signs and portents are observed that suggest the end times are near.
As King Henry VIII slips back towards the old religion, the reactionaries are fighting back: radicals are being arrested, heretics threatened with burning and everyone is looking over their shoulder, including Archbishop Cranmer. Into this unsettled landscape comes a murderer who appears to be killing for pleasure. Worse still, his first victim was someone close to Catherine Parr - the King's latest romantic obsession. Their marriage would serve the Reformist cause well and, to protect her chances of becoming Queen, Cranmer wants news of the killer kept from the superstitious King.
And so he calls upon lawyer detective Matthew Shardlake to conduct a secret investigation. Once again, Shardlake and his loyal assistant Barak must descend into the murky depths of Tudor society to try to stop the murderer before they strike again.

Star Trek - The Undiscovered Future
The first episode of Star Trek aired half a century ago, on 8th September 1966. Space medic and broadcaster Kevin Fong asks what happened to the progressive and optimistic vision of future that the iconic television series promised him?
In 1964, Star Trek producer Gene Roddenberry repeatedly failed to convince US television studios and networks to buy his idea for a new kind of science fiction series. Eventually he sold NBC the concept of a sci-fi story in which the human race explored space, united in racial harmony and with benign global purpose.
This was the era of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the western world: mutual nuclear annihilation had almost happened in 1963. The US and USSR were engaged in the Space race.
Yet in Star Trek, American captain James Kirk had a Russian, Pavel Chekov, in charge of the Enterprise's weapon systems.
The battle for civil rights in the United States was also coming to ahead. Gene Roddenberry cast a black woman as fourth in command of the Enterprise - Lieutenant Uhura, the ship's communications officer.
The Vietnam war was ramping up and relations between Mao's China and the United States were at a low. Yet another senior figure on the Enterprise's bridge was Mr Sulu, who Roddenberry wanted as a representative of Asia.
How far have we voyaged towards Star Trek's vision of the future and what of it is likely to be fulfilled or remain undiscovered in the next 50 years?
Kevin Fong presents archive material of the likes of Leonard Nimoy (Spock) and Nichelle Nichols (Lieutenant Uhura) talking about the inception and filming of the original Star Trek series, and their thoughts about Roddenberry's vision of the future and its impact in the United States at the time.
For example, Nichols relates how she had a chance encounter with Martin Luther King the day after she had told Roddenberry that she intended to leave Star Trek after the first series. King told her he was her number one fan and almost demanded that she didn't give up the role of Uhura, because she was a uniquely empowering role model on American television at the time.
For a perspective from today, Kevin also talks to George Takei who played Mr Sulu. Takei laments the ethnically divisive politics of the United States in 2016.
He meets Charles Bolden - the first African American to both command a shuttle mission and lead NASA as its chief administrator. In the age of the International Space Station, he compares himself to the 'Admiral of Star Fleet'. But the former astronaut also talks about the anger he first felt in 1994 when he was asked to fly the first Russian cosmonaut ever to board an American space shuttle.
Kevin also talk to cultural broadcaster and Star Trek fan Samira Ahmed about the sexual and racial politics of the original series.
Rod Roddenberry, the television producer son of Gene Roddenberry, tells Kevin about his father, his father's politics and creative vision, and why Star Trek still endures, even though its future remains unattained.
Producers: Andrew Luck-Baker and Jennifer Whyntie.

Episode 7
On the morning of the wedding Kate’s sister Bunny has already reminded her that she doesn’t need to marry Pyotr simply to please their father. But Kate remains committed, and she and her father and Bunny, arrive at the church where her mother’s brother – Theron - is to conduct the ceremony.
Pyotr has paid a visit to Kate at home and apologised for offending her. Dr Battista is determined to see the fact that she responded graciously to his apology as progress, and is still keen to persuade her to at least consider his plan. Without Pyotr he is convinced that he would be unable to successfully complete his research, which he believes to be at a crucial stage.

TUE 14:30 Nazi Gold: Publishing The Third Reich (b00zf4hz)
Why are books about the Third Reich such an ongoing publishing phenomenon in the UK....and what does it say about us?
Clive Anderson investigates.
According to trade magazine The Bookseller, there were no less than 850 new titles about the Third Reich published in the UK in 2010 (up from 380 in 2000 - that's more than double in ten years). These join the thousands already available on Amazon covering everything from Hitler and the occult to SS uniforms and the teaspoons of the Third Reich; from Nazi bunkers and secret weapons to the regime's interest in flying saucers, the lives of the Fuhrer's personal pilots and (our favourite) 'How Astrology Guided Hitler's Germany'.
And there's no sign the market has become saturated, far from it: Hitler and his regime are known in the British publishing business as 'The gift that keeps on giving'. Interestingly, book sales in the UK on subjects relating to Nazism are not matched, in relative terms, by any other country in the world. So really: what does all this say about us, the reading public? This feature - with shades of light and dark - examines an ongoing, national publishing phenomenon, talking to authors and agents, historians, Nazi thriller writers and publishers among others.
Guests also include the comedian David Mitchell, Laurence Rees, Guy Walters and Henry Stevens, author of 'Hitler's Flying Saucers'.

WED 14:30 Meet the Wainwrights (b04d0hxs)
Nina Myskow talks to Rufus and Martha Wainwright, acclaimed singer songwriters, children of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and the late Kate McGarrigle.
Rufus is the Grammy-nominated creator of pop songs, described by Elton John as the greatest songwriter of our generation. Martha has carved her own quirky musical niche. Both have followed the family tradition - rejection, hurt, betrayal, all laid bare in confessional songs about each other. For all of them, the very personal is material to be translated into song.
Over the course of a month, Nina Myskov sat down with Rufus in London, with Loudon in uptown New York, and with Martha in Brooklyn - to try to understand this generational conversation expressed through song.
Love, sadness, bitterness and loss revealed to public scrutiny. How cathartic is the writing process? Were songs written out of revenge? Looking back, now that the dust has settled, do any of them regret writing such revelatory barbs about their close family?

Episode 9
Kate and Pyotr arrive late for their own wedding reception as the drama of the lab break-in unfolds, but they are soon celebrating their marriage with the whole family.

In this fervid atmosphere, a killer is prowling the city - but what links the victims? Summoned to Lambeth Palace, Shardlake is asked by Archbishop Cranmer to conduct a secret investigation - no word of the murders must reach King Henry because one of the dead men was close to Catherine Parr, the King's current romantic obsession, and an ally of the reformers' cause. THU 14:30 The Chalet School (b014pzzs)
The crime writer Val McDermid on her love of the Chalet School boarding school novels. She credits them with inspiring her to go to Oxford and becoming a writer. So what did they have that the other boarding school books did not?
Nearly sixty Chalet School novels were published between 1925 and 1970, written by the South Shields novelist, Elinor Brent-Dyer. The school was initially located in Austria, but moved to Guernsey following the Anschluss. It relocated again after the Nazi invasion of The Channel Islands. The books centred on Madge Bettany, the founder of the school, and her young sister Joey, its first pupil. The books dealt with financial hardship, illness and politics, which Val argues, is absent from most other boarding school novels of the period.
The programme is produced in Manchester by Nicola Swords.

Listen Against is the comedy that takes the back off your radio and television, fiddles round with the programmes inside and then puts them all back the wrong way round.
Using "beautifully crafted, scalpel sharp" (Gillian Reynolds) mash-ups of current and archive programmes Listen Against creates a "sly, sharp, smart, surreal, satirical" world (Sunday Telegraph) where Alice Arnold and Jon Holmes look back in amplitude of at a week's worth of broadcasting like a media tapeworm going through a dog.
Like "the mischievous offspring of Points of View and The Day Today" (Observer) fictional listeners bombard Listen Against with fictional letters and emails complaining about half-fictional programmes while fictional guests and real life presenters (this series includes Melvyn Bragg, Jeremy Vine and Vanessa Feltz) argue with each other in "a gem of a satirical swoop at radio and television." FRI 07:30 Love in Recovery (m0002bnn)
Series 3
The Gun
In episode six, it’s a big day for Simon (John Hannah). The most important, nerve wracking day of his life. But whether he gets everything he ever wanted or loses it all, his friends will be there to pick up the pieces. Won’t they?

Today's panellists are Irish comedian Ed Byrne, Tasmanian stand up and art expert Hannah Gadsby, punmaster general Milton Jones and classics boffin Natalie Haynes.
The letter of the week is 'N'. Ed Byrne explains what the phrase 'nuking the fridge' means and Hannah Gadsby deduces what the Sicilian phrase 'go to Naples' means.
In a round about derogatory terms Natalie Haynes is asked what a 'fishbagger' was in the late nineteenth century and Milton Jones is asked what the American term 'ballclankers' from the 1960s might have meant.
The panellists also attempt to ban their least favourite words including 'blog', 'Christmas', 'fablet' and 'simples'.
And finally they try to unearth the meaning of some words found in a dictionary of thieves' slang from 1673.

Episode 10
Following a somewhat chaotic wedding ceremony and a dash by Pyotr to catch the liberator of their lab-mice - once they realised who was responsible - order has been restored at last. Now the wedding celebrations can begin in earnest, with congratulations to the happy couple and a glimpse into what their future holds, despite their rather unconventional courtship.

Episode 5
Atmospheric dramatisation of C. J. Sansom's bestselling Tudor crime novel, the fourth in the series featuring lawyer detective Matthew Shardlake.
London, 1543. A serial killer prowls the city, each death worse than the last - but what links the victims? Shardlake has been asked by Archbishop Cranmer to conduct a secret investigation and catch the killer before word of the bloodshed reaches the King: one of the victims was close to Catherine Parr, Henry's current romantic obsession, and an ally of the reformers' cause; Cranmer knows that such a taint will ruin any chance of her becoming Queen. While pursuing a lead, Shardlake has been stabbed by an unknown attacker in a crowded street.
Shardlake must also attend to another pressing case, that of a young man driven mad by the conviction that he is damned and that the Lord has forsaken him. Adam Kite is being held in the Bedlam for his own safety - his wild ranting about Hell and damnation verge on heresy - but Shardlake hopes his friend Guy the Apothecary can help ease his suffering.

FRI 14:30 The Lost Genius of Judee Sill (b04g8hrd)
"I coulda sworn I heard my spirit soarin'
Guess I'm always chasin' the sun
Hopin' we will soon be one
Until it turns around to me, then I try to run"
Ruth Barnes delves into the extraordinary story of the musician Judee Sill.
The first act signed to David Geffen's Asylum Records in the early 1970s, Judee Sill produced two astonishingly beautiful albums in her lifetime.
Seemingly emerging from the Laurel Canyon scene, her music wove a diverse tapestry of influences - from gospel piano to Bach, rhythm and blues to country, forty-part vocal harmonies blending into piano ballads...
So why did Judee Sill disappear from view? Ruth Barnes traces Judee's peculiar life story - hearing tales of armed robberies, reform school and addiction, alongside musical invention and heartstopping songs.
With contributions from family, friends, lovers and devotees of her music including JD Souther, XTC's Andy Partridge, Jim Pons, Tommy Peltier and 'Whispering' Bob Harris.
Producer: Eleanor McDowall

Bees
All the bees are dead. And we love it! Britons revel in sting-less, insect-free summers. But soon all the honey vanishes and instantly becomes the must-have accoutrement for rappers and grime artists. With no pollination, all fruits and vegetables vanish and a panicked government tries to find bees in North Korea and, confusingly, space. Can Brian Cox and Brian May, the country's leading science people, find a solution? Probably not.
Kirsty Wark presents a documentary from the future... Starring Nadia Kamil, Geoffrey McGivern, Kieran Hogson, and Alistair McGowan. With Alice Scott-Gemmill, Elaine Caxton, Sam Dale, Paul Heath, and Bettrys Jones.
Recorded 30 years from now, What the Future plunges into the world of tomorrow and investigates how decisions and actions concerning the current topics of today could have massive repercussions on our later lives. Dealing with issues ripped from the headlines, torn from the news agenda and hacked to shreds from Facebook feeds, WTF investigates how a single alteration now could create a chain reaction that permanently compromises the future for all.
