SAT 05:30 Love in Recovery (m000256q)
Series 3
Ivy
Third series of the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous. Written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery. Stars Rebecca Front, John Hannah, Sue Johnston, Paul Kaye and Johnny Vegas.
Love in Recovery follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Johnny Vegas is Andy, the sweet but simple self-appointed group leader. Sue Johnston plays straight talking Julie, who's been known to have the odd relapse here and there - and everywhere. Rebecca Front is the snobby and spiky Fiona, an ex-banker who had it all and then lost the lot. John Hannah is Simon, a snide journalist who’s not an alcoholic – he got caught drink driving, his boss made him attend the meeting, but he fell in love with Fiona and stayed. And, despite her best efforts, she fell in love with him too. Paul Kaye is Danno, a down and out two-bit chancer with a shady past but a lot of heart, who’s desperate to turn his life around.
As we follow their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and, most importantly, tell their stories.
In episode four, Oscar has dropped in to the meeting on the way to see his son. Oscar’s recently lost his wife and wants to share her story. But Oscar’s tale is far from what any of the group expected.
Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.

Timothy Spall
From Jimmy Nail to Danny Wilson. Actor Timothy Spall shares his castaway choices with Sue Lawley.
Timothy Spall grew up in Battersea, South London. He found school pretty uninspiring and left with art as his only qualification. However, when he played the part of the Cowardly Lion in the school production of The Wizard of Oz, aged 16, he felt he had found his niche. He says "it had a good big audience and they just laughed, and when I came out to do my bow they gave me a big cheer. Something went off in my head then." He had a natural talent, and soon found a place at RADA. Within a year he was snapped up by the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he played key roles such as Andre in Chekhov's The Three Sisters, a role which he was amazed to take over from Ian McKellan. It was a huge learning period and the critics weren't going to cut him any slack just because he was straight out of drama school. He says, "you're up there playing with the big boys so you learn pretty quick!"
His first TV part was as the Brummie builder, Barry, in Auf Weidersehen Pet in 1983 and he has had many TV roles since: Our Mutual Friend and Vacuuming Completely Nude in Paradise both earned him Best Actor nominations at the Baftas. His role in the Mike Leigh's Secrets and Lies won him critical acclaim, as well as two best actor nominations, at the Baftas and at the London Film Critic Circle. He has also been sought by Hollywood, recently appearing in the blockbuster Vanilla Sky. He won best actor at Prix d'Italia and Cinema Tout Ecran awards for the television drama Shooting the Past and was awarded the OBE in 2000.
Desert Island Discs was created by Roy Plomley.

How to Write a Poem 1/2
Daljit Nagra searches the BBC's poetry archive and chooses How to Write a Poem ep 1/2 in which Glyn Maxwell leads a masterclass at a literature festival with an impressive line-up.
The poet Glyn Maxwell finds himself in a strange village. He has been invited there to teach a poetry masterclass at a literature festival with some impressive names on the line-up. Could that really be John Keats reading in the back room of the pub? Is that John Clare wandering the lanes? Is Emily Dickinson really doing a Q&A in the village hall? And isn't that Lord Byron propping up the bar?
With Glyn are three new poets - Holly Corfield Carr, Victoria Adukwei Bulley and Dominic Fisher - who share their own poems-in-progress. The students put their questions on writing directly to the greats and Glyn shares his own advice on writing better poetry – from facing the blank page and developing ideas, to the intricacies of rhyme, metre, form and line break.
All words spoken by Keats, Clare, Dickinson and Byron are taken verbatim from their poems, letters and diaries.

The Villain in 6 Chapters
Exploring characters from literature, stage and screen, actor Toby Jones celebrates the mercurial world of the villain.
There are the characters we love, and then there are the characters we love to hate. Some of the most memorable ones in drama and fiction are villains and our relationship with them can be deeper than the characters we’re supposed to be rooting for.
In this programme we tell the tale of this love - hate relationship with the baddie and discover that the villain is more than just a foil for the hero – they are a reflection of us all.
Introducing the story in six chapters from his secret lair actor Toby Jones delves into a the vaults of villainy; from the hideous countenances to deranged governesses, from the dark side to the cads and femme fatales the programme brings into the spotlight a collection of evil doers and assesses whether they deserve sympathy, condemnation or anti-hero status.
We live in the age of the anti-hero; characters which proliferate popular culture that are no longer simply goodies and baddies. They are cherished in critically acclaimed American dramas: Breaking Bad has Walter White and The Sopranos has the eponymous Tony. The anti-hero is a complex character. They can commit truly appalling, villainous acts – but we’re encouraged to see the reasons behind those actions, to sympathise with them, to understand what makes them do what they do and to hope for redemption.
As the Walter White’s and Tony Soprano’s emerge, this programme reconsiders classic villainy and analyses whether the increasingly popular anti-hero is threatening to unseat the villain and resign them to pantomime and comic book stories as serious drama abandons real baddies.
As Toby Jones explores the wicked worlds of our favourite villains their nefarious natures are assessed by Shakespearean scholars Paul Edmondson and Carol Rutter, an academic specialising in Victorian fiction Professor John Sutherland, Comedy and film history Glenn Mitchell and actors Emily Raymond, Michael Roberts and Jonathan Rigby

Episode 2
Anne Tyler's contemporary response to Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew is set in Baltimore where Dr Battista, an obsessively dedicated scientist, lives with his two daughters Kate and Bunny.
Kate has been introduced to her father's research assistant Pyotr, in a somewhat staged encounter. Already her forthright manner has caused him to describe her as 'rude-spoken', but nonetheless Pyotr manages to bump into her on her way home from the nursery school where she works.
Kate and Bunny's mother died when Bunny was a baby, and since she dropped out of college (after a disagreement with her biology lecturer) Kate has managed the household for her father and teenage sister.
Anne Tyler's previous novels include Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant (1983), The Accidental Tourist (1985) and Breathing Lessons (1988). All three were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with Breathing Lessons winning the prize for 1989. She has also won the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize, the Ambassador Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. In 2012 she was awarded The Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence.

TUE 14:30 Body and Soul - The Oscar Micheaux Story (m000p743)
Oscar Micheaux was a visionary and revolutionary force as a filmmaker, entrepreneur and novelist, and undeniably black America's first multimedia champion.
During the first half of the 20th century he wrote, produced and directed 40 feature-length films in every genre including musicals, Westerns, romances, comedies and gangster stories.
In this programme Professor Ed Guerrero meets with Director Pearl Bowser, Emmy winning producer Sam Pollard and writer Clyde Taylor to explore Micheaux's unique place in black cinema's cultural, political and aesthetic history.
Micheaux considered himself a cinematic propagandist, and his productions an antidote to the ghastly images Hollywood presented with black people consigned to roles depicting them exclusively as servants, sexually crazed hoods or lazy tramps. As we'll discover he was a complex, driven figure whose ambition sometimes clouded his judgment, and whose objectives were so epic he was fated to fail in a society that, during his lifetime neither acknowledged his greatness nor respected his achievements. He was the first African-American to produce and direct a full-length talking film, in 1931.
His work has recently been acknowledged by New York percussionist William Hooker who has composed and performed fresh soundtracks to a selection of Micheaux's early films and introduces these to a new audience. His story has influenced young film maker Lisa Collins, currently working on a project asking why a predominantly 'white town' in South Dakota celebrates Micheaux's life with an annual film festival.
Micheaux has influenced other black film directors such as Spike Lee and was honoured with a Director's Guild Award in 1986. A year later he was given a star on Hollywood Boulevard.

As part of the Hogarth Shakespeare project, authors of international standing have been invited to select a play and to write a contemporary version of it as a novel. Anne Tyler's response to The Taming of the Shrew is set in Baltimore where Dr Battista, an obsessively dedicated scientist, lives with his two daughters Kate and Bunny.
He spends most of his waking hours at the lab where he is assisted by a brilliant young researcher called Pyotr. But Pyotr’s three year visa is set to expire in a few weeks and, fearful that it will not be renewed, Dr Battista has suggested that his eldest daughter Kate might marry Pyotr and resolve the situation to everyone’s satisfaction – except hers.
After all it’s not as if Kate has a boyfriend or a bevy of admirers like her pretty sister, Bunny.
Kate responds with anger and humiliation, but her father is still determined to pursue his plan.
Episode 4
As part of the Hogarth Shakespeare project authors of international standing have been invited to select a play and to write a contemporary version of it as a novel.
But Pyotr’s three year visa is set to expire in a few weeks and fearful that it will not be renewed Dr Battista has suggested that his eldest daughter Kate might marry Pyotr and resolve the situation to everyone’s satisfaction – except hers.
After all it’s not as if Kate has a boyfriend or a bevy of admirers like her pretty sister, Bunny.
Pyotr has paid a visit to Kate at home and apologised for offending her. Dr Battista is determined to see the fact that she responded graciously to his apology as progress, and is still keen to persuade her to at least consider his plan. Without Pyotr he is convinced that he would be unable to successfully complete his research, which he believes to be at a crucial stage.

THU 14:30 The Lost Women of British Jazz (b04grm6j)
Janine H Jones uncovers the secret history of women's jazz and the tragic story of how a burgeoning musical equality was deliberately snuffed out.
Ivy Benson, Gracie Cole and Kathy Stobart became household names in jazz and dancehall, only after battling throughout the 1940s and 50s to gain recognition and respect in a male-dominated industry; a struggle that was repeated by other women over many decades.
This programme transports us back to post-WWI Britain, where women were experiencing their first taste of emancipation. The UK was becoming a hotbed of music. Bars, clubs and bottle parties hosted bands every night and ladies were jazzing right alongside the men. In their own words, lady musicians of the Jazz Age tell their stories. Rare archive recordings fill in the skipped beats of their history and Janine reveals how first their careers, and their rightful place in history, was quashed.
Researcher Jen Wilson, historian Val Wilmer and drummer Sheelagh Pearson break new ground in this under-researched area and expose the hidden truth about the role of the pioneering women in early jazz.

Like "the mischievous offspring of Points of View and The Day Today" (Observer) fictional listeners bombard Listen Against with fictional letters and emails complaining about half-fictional programmes while fictional guests and real life presenters (this series includes Melvyn Bragg, Jeremy Vine and Vanessa Feltz) argue with each other in "a gem of a satirical swoop at radio and television." Series 3
Making Plans
In episode five, talk turns to weddings. What’s it like to go to a wedding as a recovering alcoholic? As usual, the answers are far from simple and the experiences of the group couldn’t be more different.
