SAT 12:00 Ed Reardon's Week (b010j4pg)
Series 1
The Swim
Does it seem that the media is run by idiots, lying charlatans and moronic 12-year-olds who should've been drowned at birth in a bucket of raw sewage?
Welcome to the world of Ed Reardon, author, pipe smoker, consummate fare-dodger and master of the abusive e-mail.
Christopher Douglas stars as Ed Reardon.
Written by Christopher Douglas and Andrew Nickolds.
In a one-bedroom flat over a hairdresser's in Berkhamsted, Ed has lived on his own since his wife and grown-up kids left him, forcing the sale of the London home.
Ed's first and last published novel ‘Who Would Fardels Bear?’ was bought by Hollywood, relocated from Oldham to San Francisco and turned into a Sally Field movie ('Sister Mom') in the mid-70s. It was directed by Ed's best mate Jaz Milvane whose career has since gone stratospheric. Ed's broke up on re-entry; with the exception of his episode of Tenko in 1982, the royalties of which now amount to about £17 a year - but are anxiously awaited nonetheless.
Ed’s been forced into lowbrow work for the ever popular Christmas book market. Jane Seymour's Household Hints (1996) and The Brand's Hatch Story got him through a couple of winters.
But Ed remains bullishly optimistic. He may have just one pair of trousers and a seven-figure Amazon sales ranking, but no writer knows more about stealing his agent's stationery... and as a freeloader Ed Reardon is the acknowledged leader of his profession.
Enjoy Ed's flawed attempts to escape poverty and gain the literary success he strongly feels is due. Regular characters include Felix (Ed's long-standing friend and former agent) Ping (his new '12 year-old' agent), the lively pensioners he teaches a screenwriting class to and the irritatingly rich and successful, Jaz Milvane.

Cricketers
Freddie Flintoff
From Judy Garland to The Eagles.
Former England cricketer Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff shares his castaway choices with Kirsty Young.
One of the best players of his generation, he was part of the England team that won the Ashes in 2005, a year that marked his sporting coming of age. On the strength of that historic victory he was awarded an MBE for services to the game, and the public voted him BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Barely out of his pram when he picked up a cricket ball he turned out to bat for an under-14 match when he was just six years old. His debut was not in crisp cricket whites, but in a second hand Manchester United tracksuit, setting the tone for someone who's made a habit of doing things his way. Not least at a 10 Downing Street reception when, somewhat the worse for wear, he weaved into the cabinet room, plonked himself down in the PM's chair and knocked back yet another bottle of beer.
Since retiring from the game he's had a go at heavyweight boxing and won the bout. One area where he hasn't come out on top: his sons never listen to his cricket coaching tips.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2015.

SUN 13:00 Paul O'Grady Stands Up for Liverpool (b01n1102)
Liverpudlian Paul O'Grady celebrates some of Merseyside's funny Scouse men and women including Arthur Askey, Rob Wilton, Tommy Handley, Kenny Everett, Ken Dodd, Jimmy Tarbuck, Alexei Sayle, Patricia Routledge and John Bishop.
* Big-hearted Arthur Askey was born in Liverpool in 1900 and went on to front Band Waggon, the first regular BBC radio comedy series. Russell Davies introduces an episode of Turns of the Century profiling the man who coined the famous phase "Ay-Thang-You."
* Rob Wilton's was a different catch-phrase, but like Arthur Askey, his comedy entertained millions during the war years, kicking off with those immortal words "The Day War Broke Out". Mark Radcliffe tells Rob's story in an episode of How Tickled Am I?
* ITMA, or It's That Man Again for those not in the know, was the radio home of Tommy Handley, a comedian who was struck down in his prime, bringing to an end one of the most popular radio comedy series the BBC has ever known. And sticking with comedy catchphrases, it was Tommy who first started using the acronym TTFN - long before instant messaging and mobile phone text speak!
* Ken Dodd loves a catch phrase too, and he loves his tickling stick. Fellow Liverpulian funny-man Ricky Tomlinson meets up with Doddy for a chat about his life.
* As radio revolutionaries go, they don't get much more radical than the late Kenny Everett. Well known on both commercial and BBC national radio, it's his time at local BBC Radio Merseyside that we hear about.
* Jimmy Tarbuck tells former Desert Island Discs presenter Sue Lawley how he got his start in comedy.
* Barry Cryer profiles a bit on an imposter to the programme - Patricia Routledge. As Paul O'Grady is quick to point out, Patricia hails from Birkenhead rather than Liverpool, but she's very welcome. The star of Keeping Up Appearances became best known for being the lady of the house at the notorious Bucket Residence.
* And finally, current star John Bishop chats to Desert Island Discs' Kirsty Young about the career change that took him from salesman to standup.

Top Shelf
Alice and Snoo have to resort to some rather unconventional means to get people into the library. A very low shelf, a book about zombies, a hosepipe ban and some hummingbirds bring the public flocking in.
Meet Alice, a former child prodigy who won a place at Oxford aged 9 but, because Daddy went too, she never needed to have any friends. She's scared of everything - everything that is, except libraries and Snoo, a slightly confused individual, with a have-a-go attitude to life, marriage, haircuts and reality. Snoo loves books, and fully intends to read one one day.
And forever popping into the library is Dr. Cadogan, celebrity doctor to the stars and a man with his finger in every pie. Charming, indiscreet and quite possibly wanted by Interpol, if you want a discrete nip and tuck and then photos of it accidentally left on the photocopier, Dr Cadogan is your man.
Their happy life is interrupted by the arrival of Simon Nielson, a man with a mission, a mission to close down inefficient libraries. Fortunately, he hates his mission. What he really wants to do is once, just once, get even with his inexhaustible supply of high-achieving brothers.

Nikesh Shukla
This week, we talk about language, boxing, role models, multi-cultural representation and more, with the writer Nikesh Shukla.
Nikesh remembers the publication of his first short story and the joy of seeing his name printed alongside people he respected, in a book, with a bar code on the back. This achievement prompted Nikesh to focus on writing, instead of a “mediocre” rapping career. Although some of his earliest lyrics do feature in his debut novel, Coconut Unlimited, which was shortlisted for the Costa Award in 2010.
This novel features the adventures of three hip hop-obsessed school boys, growing up in Harrow in the 1990s. Nikesh was initially told by literary agents and publishers that there wasn’t a market for Coconut Unlimited. More preposterously, one agent said that he didn’t find the characters “authentically Asian”.
Nikesh proved that, not only was there a market for his novel, but there was also an appetite for The Good Immigrant, a crowd-funded showcase for writers of colour. This 2016 anthology took just three days to fund and was so successful that it’s been succeeded by an American edition, a journal, and a literary agency to prioritise writers from marginalised backgrounds.
Nikesh believes in a multi-cultural Britain and he wants to have big conversations about what that looks like. It can’t just be the elite that tell our stories. They’ve been telling stories for centuries and books can change the course of who you are.
We hear Namaste, Nikesh’s meditation on language and identity which is addressed to his baby daughter, and was recorded for BBC Radio 4 when The Good Immigrant was published.
We also hear Nikesh interview Dr Deborah Jump about boxing for the Radio 4 series One To One. His interest in boxing was precipitated by a racist incident on a late night train in 2016. The impact of racially-motivated violence, the influence of role models and upbringing, and the debate about boxing, are all explored in his latest book, The Boxer, a work of YA fiction that Nikesh wrote in just three months and was published earlier this year.

Series 1
Not Listening but Hearing
A sitcom, written by Moray Hunter and starring Angus Deayton, about five single, middle aged neighbours living in flats in a converted house in North London.
Mitch (Angus Deayton) is a widower and part-time therapist who is looking to put his life back together now that he is single and living - supposedly temporarily - with Will (Pearce Quigley), his younger, more volatile and unhappily divorced half-brother.
Elsewhere in the building are schoolteacher Ellie (Abigail Cruttenden) who is shy, nervous and desperately missing her ex-boyfriend, as well as overly honest, frustrated actress Louisa (Kate Isitt), and socially inept IT nerd Morris (Bennett Arron).
In Not Listening But Hearing, Will and Mitch's sleep is disturbed by some frankly outrageous noises coming from upstairs, which leads to an extremely awkward conversation with Louisa, who is in a new relationship. Ellie has had her Miro print re-framed - she likes the new frame but is now worried it's not exactly the same print. And Morris is on jury duty which, to him, is basically a great chance to meet single women.
It's a busy week all round.
An Absolutely production for BBC Radio 4.
