SAT 00:00 Earthsea (b0bn5qb4)
Series 2
A Bad Thing
On the island of Gont, Tenar saves a remarkable young girl from certain death. She also makes a dangerous enemy.
Ursula Le Guin's enduring fantasy saga starring Nina Wadia.
Published between 1968 and 2001, the five novels and short story collection of Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea cycle (A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, Tehanu, The Other Wind and Tales from Earthsea) are re-told across 12 episodes. In the first series, the first three novels were re-told, and series two takes in Tehanu, The Other Wind and the short story Dragonfly.
As a girl, Tenar, was taken from her home and family on the island of Atuan to become Arha, the Priestess Ever Reborn, guardian of the ominous Tombs of Atuan. Deep within the Tombs, Ged and Tenar met and became unlikely allies, escaped from Atuan, and brought peace to the troubled archipelago. Now in her late middle age, widowed and with grown up children, Tenar runs a farm on the island of Gont. She has not seen Ged for many years.
Ged was born on Gont, with innate magical talent and a reckless nature. He trained in wizardry on the island Roke, where he released a terrible shadow into the world and then risked his life to restore the balance. He grew to become Archmage on Roke and the greatest wizard on all of Earthsea. When the evil wizard Cob attempted to cheat death and live forever, Ged found him and closed the breach between life and death. In doing so, he lost his powers of magic.
Set on a vast archipelago of islands, where magic is a central part of life, they tell the stories of Tenar and Ged.

Episode 3
Michael Frayn: the most comic philosophical writer of our time.
An all-star cast has great fun with his hilarious view of us all. People talking. To each other, to themselves. To no one. Trying to communicate. To explain.
In this episode, a controlling theatre director (Alex Jennings) thinks he can direct anything. Lloyd Owen and Rosalind Ayres talk to each other on their mobiles, yards apart. Patricia Hodge and Roger Allam can't agree on how to deal with household repairs. And Matthew Wolf decides to take a short break from this very programme. Ian Ogilvy, Julia McKenzie, Julian Sands and Sophie Winkleman attend an unusual Memorial, and Janie Dee and Richard Sisson enjoy a musical invitation list. Martin Jarvis lectures on being 'quite clear'.
So no worries about queuing up to get a drink in the interval or finding the loo. We're on the radio - the theatre of the listener's imagination. Sit back and enjoy.

Make Perhaps This Out Sense Of Can You
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archives and selects Make Perhaps This Sense of Can You with experimental poet Bob Cobbing.
Bob's playful experiments with sound and text have inspired a generation of poets, artists and composers. A writer whose work skittered between literature and music, poetry and artwork - he is, perhaps, best remembered for his extraordinary poetry readings. With his operatic, resonant voice he would boom, howl, chant and whisper leaving his audience enchanted and enraged in equal measures.
In this programme, we delve into the work of Bob Cobbing - exploring his influence on the publishing world, his role in one of the most turbulent periods at the Poetry Society and the visual poem that outraged Margaret Thatcher.
Revered and reviled - he has been a controversial figure at times. In this feature the writers Iain Sinclair, Peter Finch, Alan Brownjohn and Paula Claire, amongst others, reflect on the musicality of his work, how he challenged the conventional notion of poetry and the surprising controversy sound and visual poetry caused in the 20th Century.

Tony came to Brighton in the eighties as a student and set up his own Pierrot Troupe The Pierroters named after the rotting West Pier which was the subject of a Kaleidoscope feature made in 1995.
There are first hand memories of what it was like to go on a seaside holiday between the wars in 1984 programme called ‘Sand Between the Toes'.
Tony meets Max Tyler an expert on the Fol De Rols and he and Tony hear them perform in an extraordinary piece of archive from 1937 when four of the shows hundreds of miles apart were brought together live by the magic of wireless.
There are also insights into Brighton's very own Cheeky Chappie as Tony visits a Fish and Chip Shop in Brighton where the Max Miller Society has set up a museum.
‘Casting Shadows' a wonderfully evocative play by Mark Burgess conjures up an imaginary meeting between the actor Laurence Oliver, playwright Terence Rattigan and Brighton's famous seaside entertainer, Max Miller. Roy Hudd headlines as Miller.
Gavin Henderson president of the National Piers Society reveals that seaside Piers were initially places of sophistication, almost the arts centres of their day, and Rachel Clark of the West Pier Trust looks to the future and the plans to create a new vertical Pier on Brighton seafront.
Tony celebrates the Great Days of the West Pier in his 1995 Archive Hour ‘Oh What a Lovely Pier!' with contributions from among others the late Corin Redgrave.

This week, Suitable For Framing - a story about the significance of art in David's childhood family home - and additional extracts from his book Theft By Finding, a compilation of diary entries from 1977-2002.
With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.
David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.
David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

Josie Long
We look at fact and fiction, and the blurring of both genres, with the comedian, writer and actor Josie Long.
Josie’s stand-up career began when she was still at school and she picked up her first award (the BBC New Comedy Award) whilst still a teenager.
After a brief hiatus, studying English at Oxford University, Josie’s prolific output has included eight Edinburgh shows (three of which were nominated for Best Comedy), appearances on television and radio, several podcasts, two film shorts and a full-length feature titled Super November.
All three films are set in Glasgow - an indie theme park of a city beloved by Josie - with returning characters. And the two shorts were adapted into the series Romance & Adventure, for Radio 4, back in 2016.
Josie talks about her Glaswegian series and drawing on real-life experiences for fiction. We hear the first episode, which first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2016.
We also look at Short Cuts, an award-winning Radio 4 programme and podcast made by Falling Tree productions, which experiments beautifully with genre and sound. The featured story, by the poet Ross Sutherland, cuts up a recording of journalist John Humphrys with brilliantly creative results.

WED 11:00 Billy Bragg's Changing Times (m000lg63)
2. Beautiful Day
These are fractious times. But there have been fractious times before. And of all the ways of looking at history, the instinctive reactions of artists, specifically musicians, to changing times, is one of the most fascinating.
From Hamish Henderson to Tom Robinson, the Sex Pistols to U2, and more recently Radiohead and Stormzy, protest music has come a long way.
In this programme, Billy Bragg takes time to savour and share the stories of great moments where musicians were inspired by unfolding events to protest, to perform and to preach of an alternative way.
Along the way there will be contributions from authors, artists and academics who have seen technology transform the way in which people create and listen to protest songs. And there will be a chance to hear from those producing protest music in the era of Brexit, Trump and fake news.
Producer: Dan Quick

Can't Tell Nathan Caton Nothing About Dating - tells the story of young, up-and-coming comedian Nathan Caton, who after becoming the first in his family to graduate from University, opted not to use his architecture degree to try his hand at being a full-time stand-up comedian, much to his family's annoyance who want him to get a 'proper job.'
Each episode is designed to show the criticism, interference and rollercoaster ride that Nathan endures from his family as he pursues his career. This week in Can't Tell Nathan Caton Nothing About Dating - Nathan struggles with his family who disapprove not only of his career but his girlfriend too. Can he persuade them to accept either?
The episodes are a mix of Nathan's stand-up intercut with scenes from his family life.

Episode 4
Michael Frayn: the most comic philosophical writer of our time. An all-star cast has great fun with his hilarious view of us all. And the ways we attempt to communicate. And explain.
In this final part, we start by taking listeners direct from the Matchbox studio to a report from outside the National Theatre, where some long speeches are going on inside. Our reporter (Martin Jarvis) tells anchor Rosalind Ayres that it seems to be all about Hamlet. A couple (Lisa Dillon and Lloyd Owen), who have just been on a street demo, can't quite cast off their hectoring demeanour when ordering tea and buns. And Tom Hollander at a dinner party embarrasses a fellow guest with some surprisingly anti-social behaviour. A husband (Adam Godley) may have a communication problem. In a bravura solo performance, Julia McKenzie attempts (on the phone) to communicate with the 'sofa disposal' department, but are they actually listening? And language becomes a problem for Ian Ogilvy as a hospital visitor - but who is really speaking gibberish?
Episode 4 cast: Rosalind Ayres, Lisa Dillon, Adam Godley, Tom Hollander, Julia McKenzie, Lloyd Owen and Ian Ogilvy, Martin Jarvis, Nigel Anthony and Matthew Wolf.
Written by Michael Frayn
Producer: Rosalind Ayres
Director: Martin Jarvis

Children of Fire and Earth
Kalessin, the eldest of dragons, brings a message to the people of Havnor. At last, the King and his council know what they must do: travel to the beating heart of all of Earthsea.
Ursula Le Guin's enduring fantasy saga - based on the novel The Other Wind adapted by Judith Adams.
Published between 1968 and 2001, the five novels and short story collection of Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea cycle (A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, Tehanu, The Other Wind and Tales from Earthsea) are re-told across twelve episodes. Series 2 takes in the action of Tehanu, The Other Wind and the short story Dragonfly from Tales of Earthsea.
Set on a vast archipelago of islands, where magic is a central part of life, they tell the stories of Tenar and Ged.
She is reunited with Ged when he is brought back to the island of his birth on the back of a dragon.
Ged (also known as Sparrowhawk or Hawk) was born on Gont, with innate magical talent and a reckless nature. While Tenar has traveled to Havnor, he has stayed at on Gont to mind the house.

FRI 22:30 Eric Idle - Radio Five (b04y57sr)
From 19/05/1973
Following his TV success with Monty Python in the 1970s, Eric Idle's first solo venture - predating Rutland Weekend Television by a year - was his very own hour-long music and comedy shows on BBC Radio 1.
Ever the innovator, Idle's Radio Five pre-dated the real BBC network of that name by some 18 years.
Eric links his eclectic choice of music (from the Beach Boys to Joni Mitchell) with self-penned sketches, for which he provides all of the voices.
Sketches include: unusual ways to join the Radio Five Club and the latest headlines from The World at Radio One. A weatherman can't quite manage to sign off his bulletin - and a new panel game called Absolute Rubbish.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 1 in May 1973.
