Passion
Mark Watson continues his quest to improve the world, nimbly assisted by Tim Key and Tom Basden.
As broadcast live in November 2011 - Mark will be asking the big questions that are crucial to our understanding of ourselves and society - in a dynamic and thought provoking new format he opens the floor to the live audience and asks them to jump into the conversation via tweets and messages to work out how we can all make the world a better place.
This time Mark looks at "Passion" - Passion encompasses some of our most human qualities: emotion, energy desire. But is it a dangerous thing? In their hit Desire, U2 sang: 'Desire!/Desire!' But that isn't hugely helpful, that's just repeating the word over and over again. So we'll go into a bit more detail.
We are all passionate about something, whether it's sex, personal satisfaction, or sexy personal satisfaction. Without passion we're inert. But with passion, we can sometimes be all too ert. Where do we draw the line between normal passions, and being one of these guys like Othello who let themselves down and kill a girl over a hanky?
Producer: Lianne Coop.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2011.

It's as dryly comic and acutely observed as Ayckbourn, as wry as Wodehouse and as acerbic as Coward. This first adaptation for radio is by Richard Stoneman - writer on TV's hit series Doc Martin - and stars Michael Palin in the central role.
In his diaries for 1988-98, Palin writes about the out of town previews for the stage show and records the press saying it was, "A good play. Funny and moving...the audiences laughed and laughed," and he had to remind himself, "It is a comedy. It's a comedy about someone who has made a mess of his life." He also noted how much he enjoyed creating so much amusement for so many people.

Michael Goldfarb
Michael Goldfarb is a broadcast journalist and author, whose search for stories has taken him to more than 20 countries.
His favourite medium is the radio essay and we learn more about Michael’s upbringing in New York, via two standout episodes of Trip Sheets, which he recorded for BBC Radio 3's The Essay.
In these essays, Michael documents a city in flux. In the first essay from 2013, we see New York through the eyes of a cab driver, passing burning buildings, as crime in the city escalated. He also recalls the powerful allure of Broadway, to an aspiring actor not yet ready to be the author of his own scripts, in an essay from 2017's An Actor's Life.
Now based in London, with his field reporting days largely behind him, Michael presents a podcast which reflects on the history he’s reported, written and lived. Titled FRDH - The First Rough Draft of History – recent topics include Brexit, Iran War Fever, the Democrat dilemma, and a declining life expectancy in North America.
In an extract from a 2014 episode of FRDH, titled 9/11 Live: On Air, we hear Michael hosting a live NPR talk show in Boston, as the north tower fell on 11th September 2001. And he reflects on this extraordinary experience, as well as the very real danger to reporters, and the civilians who engage with them, in conflict zones.
We also hear short clips of Ahmad's War, the 2003 NPR documentary which became the subject of a book, as well as Return To Kurdistan, the 2008 follow-up for the BBC World Service.
Presented and produced for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Ali Gardiner.

In another version he's a DJ in a slightly shabby local radio station who gets hassled by the occasional oddball on the street. And he's the man who hopes for everything. The truth lies somewhere in between.
And at home? Well, naturally, his private life is chaotic. His wife has left him, taking custody of his 8-year-old son Justin jnr, and is in the process of taking him to the cleaners. So he's back on the market. As is his house - so he's currently living in his father-in-law's spare room in Bury. The only person who understands him is his Gran, living in luxury in an old folk's home in Warrington. Oh, and his producer Bryn but this might not be a good thing.
Despite all this mess, Justin always remains positive. Every new day is a new opportunity, "When life throws you lemons, make lemonade".
Recorded in front of an audience in Manchester.
Everyone Quite Likes Justin is written by Justin Moorhouse and Jim Poyser. Justin is a comedian who sells out gigs across the country. He has also written plays and a previous show for Radio 4. Jim Poyser is a writer and producer of enormous experience in both radio and television.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2011.
TUE 23:00 Ida Barr: Artificial Hip Hop (b00vcq95)
Transparency
By Christopher Green.
Ida Barr is a music hall singer who has embraced hip hop and rap, reflecting the cultural diversity of London's East End, where she has been living in retirement for several decades. Ida has a genuine love of talking to people so each week she investigates a new topic and creates a unique brand of music-hall, hip-hop fusion with beat boxer Shlomo. For the last in the series, Ida's topic of choice is "Transparency".
Produced by Claire Grove
Ida Barr is the creation of award-winning performer Christopher Green (aka spoof country and western singer Tina C). "Missy Elliott meets Marie Lloyd" - Guardian. Each week Ida investigates a current political buzz word - Choice, Responsibility, Diversity and Transparency - and records her findings on her Ida-pod - an ancient battery operated cassette machine with a greasy earpiece. Her target groups include the Sutton House over 55's drama group, children from the Italia Conti Academy and Theatre Venture's Youth Company from Stratford East.
Beat box artist Shlomo was heard by 3.9 billion people around the world when he and Björk performed "Oceania" at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympics. He has also worked with artists such as Martha Wainwright, Damon Albarn, and Nitin Sawhney. He is a classically-trained percussionist and heads the world's only human beatbox choir, the Vocal Orchestra.
Christopher Green has written and performed three Tina C series for BBC Radio 4 plus Tina C's Election Night BBQ Special (Nov 2008). 'Ida Barr's Bingo' was at the Brighton Festival and the South Bank in early 2008, and 'Ida Barr: So This Is Christmas' was at the Barbican Centre in December 2008.

This week Victoria talks to the actress, singer, writer, business woman, and politician Baroness Benjamin of Beckenham, known to millions of Play School viewers as Floella Benjamin.
Floella tells of how her supremely happy childhood in Trinidad turned to unhappiness when her parents left her with a cruel foster family; the joy of being reunited with her mother and father when she came to England; learning to overcome racism with a smile; the freedom that came with passing her driving test; buying and then selling her very own Austin 35; driving around looking for parties in the 60s; appearing in the musical Hair without having to take her clothes off; the power of Play School and the enduring importance of children's TV; the day her husband's dream came true with a vintage Bentley; and why when she became a peer she chose Baroness of Beckenham as her title.

2. Radio Active and Down the Line
The history of radio's ability to parody itself goes back almost to the birth of radio. The range of this parody is so wide - news, current affairs, drama, the arts, phone-ins, investigative journalism - that the production team on this programme decided that a single presenter simply wouldn't do it justice.
‘Parody Please’ is co-presented by a truly exceptional range of favourite radio voices, including Charlotte Green and Kirsty Young and Ruth from the Archers, who collectively explore why radio is the best medium for parody, and its important role in our society, perhaps today more than ever.
In the second three programmes, Jan Ravens joins this roster of celebrities to talk with the distinguished radio critic Gilllian Reynolds CBE.

Crispquilibrium
Series 6 of the hit series with more shop based shenanigans and over the counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Mahju and his trusty sidekick Dave. Written by and starring Donald Mcleary and Sanjeev Kohli.
Set in a Scots-Asian corner shop, the award winning Fags, Mags & Bags sees a return of all the shop regular characters, and some guest appearances along the way, from the likes of Julia Deakin and Mina Anwar.
In this episode, the Wall of Crisps is rocked by a political scandal as the placement of bags in the wall of a new range of Scottish political crisps is hotly debated - namely the Prawn Sturgeons, Easy Cheesy Davidsons, Chicken and Chorizo Dugdales, Goats Cheese and Heritage Tomato Harvies, and Fiery Hot Chipotle Rennies.
Join the staff of Fags, Mags and Bags in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of over 30 years and is a firmly entrenched, friendly presence in the local area. He is joined by his shop sidekick, Dave.
Then of course there are Ramesh's sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business. Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them - whether they like it or not!

THU 07:00 North by Northamptonshire (b017mx3z)
Series 2
Episode 1
As is well-known: Yorkshiremen wear flat caps and Essex girls wear short skirts; Liverpudlians are scallies and Cockneys are wideboys. Northamptonians gaze wistfully at these stereotypes and wish for an identity of any kind and a label less ridiculous than Northamptonians. Northamptonshire, let us be clear, is neither north, nor south nor in the Midlands. It floats somewhere between the three eyeing up the distinctiveness of each with envious eyes. Now Katherine Jakeways is giving Northamptonshire an identity. And she waits, benevolently, for her home-county to thank her. And possibly make her some kind of Mayor.
Joined by the same incredible cast which graced Series One - including Sheila Hancock as the Narrator, Penelope Wilton, Mackenzie Crook, Felicity Montagu and Kevin Eldon - and with the exciting addition of Geoffrey Palmer, North by Northamptonshire promises once again to delight audience and critics.
Wadenbrook is a small market town in a corner of Northamptonshire, and will be familiar to anyone who has ever lived anywhere. This year, its residents are building up to a Dickensian Festival weekend, so expect mob caps, cravats and shawls which are usually used as cat-blankets.

About Nightmare Relatives
Can't Tell Nathan Caton Nothing About Nightmare Relatives tells the story of young, up-and-coming comedian Nathan Caton, who becomes the first in his family to graduate from University - only to opt for a career in comedy - much to his family's annoyance who want him to get a 'proper job' using his architecture degree.
Each episode is designed to show the criticism, interference and rollercoaster ride that Nathan endures from his family as he pursues his career. The episodes are a mix of Nathan's stand-up intercut with scenes from his family life.
Can Nathan persuade his family to support his career choice?
Mum is probably the most lenient of the disappointed family members. She loves Nathan, but she aint looking embarrassed for nobody!
Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son joining him to work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window Martin feels he has to get Nathan back into getting a real job.
Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She didn't leave the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing United Kingdom for a better life so that her grandson could 'tell jokes!'
So with all this going on in the household what will Nathan do? Will he be able to persist and follow his dreams? Or will he give in to his family's interference?

FRI 07:00 Michael Frayn's Matchbox Theatre (b06pxyt0)
Episode 1
Michael Frayn: the most comic philosophical writer of our time. An all-star cast has great fun with Frayn's hilarious view of us all. And of how we attempt to communicate.
In this opening episode, we hear Joanna Lumley and Roger Allam as stone effigies in a cathedral talking to each other like an old married couple. (Well, they've been together several hundred years. Nothing much changes.)
Then there's the younger couples - Charles Edwards and Sophie Winkleman bickering over who should finish who's sentences, and Lisa Dillon and Alex Jennings on the irritations that occur when discussing an apparently simple decision - whether or not to accept a kind invitation.
Martin Jarvis has trouble with a rarefied type of cold-calling - how to tell someone they've won a Nobel Prize. And we have an excerpt from a documentary on a species of creature that scurries and scuttles in the darkness. The wild life narrator sounds suspiciously like Sir David Attenborough. (It is.)
This four-part series is Theatre in miniature. Short entertainments based on Frayn's recently acclaimed book, Matchbox Theatre. His brand new collection, now on the radio - the theatre of the listener's imagination. Set design, ice-cream sales, packet of nuts, where to sit - it's up to you. Just sit back and enjoy.
