St Catharine’s College, Cambridge
A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from St Catharine's College, Cambridge, with specialist subjects including Geography, French and Veterinary Medicine and questions ranging from French gender to horse teeth via James Bond and Dick Dastardly.
The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Ed Sheeran. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.
Other Universities featured in this series include Royal Holloway University of London, Aberdeen, Plymouth, Brighton and Oxford Brookes.

SAT 09:00 The Mastertapes Guide to Writing the Perfect Song (m000j8wb)
Paul McCartney, Emeli Sande, Randy Newman, Elvis Costello, Lily Allen, Corinne Bailey Rae, Paul Weller, Ray Davis, Benjamin Clementine, Sinead O’Connor and many more leading musicians give a masterclass in the art of songwriting.

John Wilson has talked to 45 acclaimed songwriters for BBC Radio 4's series Mastertapes. In each episode, recorded with an audience of fans at the BBC Maida Vale Studios, the guest focuses a key album from their career, describing in detail how dozens of much loved hit songs were written.

Now the Mastertapes guests are brought together to offer a unique how-to guide to writing the perfect song. Sir Paul McCartney demonstrates the building blocks of songwriting, reveals how a chord ‘borrowed’ from a Picasso painting became the basis of a collaborative composition with Kanye West. McCartney also talks candidly about his songwriting partnership with John Lennon in The Beatles. Suzanne Vega and Emeli Sandé remember - and try to play - the very first songs that they wrote as children.

Ray Davies reveals how the character studies he created for his songs with The Kinks - including Dedicated Follower Of Fashion - were based on real people. Paul Weller breaks down the words and chords to A Town Called Malice, and remembers how, as a younger songwriter, he would ritually destroy his latest lyric books after completing a new album. Randy Newman offers unique insight into the art of songwriting for the big screen, showing how the bittersweet sentiments of You’ve Got A Friend In Me from Toy Story won him an Oscar.

Presented and produced by John Wilson.

Fi Glover helps illustrate that life is sometimes stranger than fiction or, at the very least, just as compelling,
Fi has presented The Listening Project since it launched, in partnership with The British Library, back in 2012. Since then, a team of BBC producers based all around the UK, have been capturing the nation in conversation.
Over 1,600 conversations have been recorded, with tales of love, divorce, parenthood, grief, strange twists of fate, happy happenstance, and more.
We revisit some standout moments from the series, including an unforgettable poem about Auschwitz, a marriage proposal, and a question about birds on electrical wires.
This episode also features insights from producer Louise Pepper, who’s got a great nose for a story; and Listening Project alumna Janet Hoggarth, whose post-divorce experience of communal living led to a book deal.

A bittersweet comedy drama about a community mental health nurse created by Paul Whitehouse and David Cummings.
Liz (played by Esther Coles), the community psychiatric nurse of the title makes her rounds to visit "service users" in their homes. Most of those patients are played by comedy chameleon Paul Whitehouse himself – with supporting roles for Rosie Cavaliero, Vilma Hollingbery and Cecilia Noble.
Whitehouse brings us an obese bed-bound mummy's boy, an agoraphobic ex-con, a manic ex-glam rock star, ageing rake Herbert who hoards his house with possessions and memories, a Jewish chatterbox in unrequited love with his Jamaican neighbour, and a long-suffering carer and his Alzheimer's-afflicted mother.
There are new characters too in the guise of a self-proclaimed DJ and a Geordie struggling with his wife's job in the world's oldest profession.
We follow their humorous, sometimes sad and occasionally moving interactions with Liz, whose job is to assess their progress, dispense medication and offer support.
Nurse gives a sympathetic insight into the world of some of society's more marginalised people in a heartfelt and considered way.

WED 11:00 The Lives of Harry Towers (m000j815)
2. Over the Edge
Adam Roche presents the story of the life and radio times of prolific, and notorious, producer Harry Alan Towers.
Best remembered today as the notorious producer of over a hundred cheaply made exploitation movies, Harry Alan Towers began his long career in radio, a medium in which he created dozens of high quality classic shows including, most famously, ‘The Lives of Harry Lime’, starring Orson Welles.
From his first successful attempts to get his programmes on air in the late 1930s, via some unwanted attention from American law-enforcement authorities, through to his star-studded productions of the ‘50s, ‘The Lives of Harry Towers’ is the story of that pioneering and globe-trotter’s radio career.
In this episode, Adam is joined by radio historian Professor Sean Street

The Thick Of It
TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.
In this episode, Peter and Jon talk to Armando Iannucci and Rebecca Front about their biting political satire The Thick Of It.
Was Nicola Murray just a nice (if hapless) person, thrust into a nest of political vipers, or was she just as bad as the rest of them? Who came up with the line “about as much use as a marzipan dildo”? And who was Malcolm Tucker really based on (it’s probably not who you think).
With Peter and Jon as our guides, we’ll take the opportunity to ask quite how they went about making a great bit of TV comedy? Who came up with it? How did it get written? We’ll talk about the commissioning, the casting, and the reception the show received when it first aired.
We’ll do our very best to winkle out some backstage secrets straight from the horse’s mouth, as we hear the unvarnished truth from the people who were there, and who put these iconic shows on the telly.

Arthur Smith on Emil Zátopek
Matthew Parris – himself current holder of the House of Commons marathon record time – meets comedian Arthur Smith, who also turns out to have been a runner when he was younger, and whose choice for a Great Life is an athlete whom he has admired since his childhood.
Emil Zátopek emerged onto the international stage in 1948 when he became a sensation at the Olympics in London, but it was his performance in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics which put him in the record books. Already an established distance runner, he bagged gold in the 5000 and 10000 metres and then, having previously given no hint that he would be a champion marathon runner, he also won that race.
The expert witness is Pat Butcher, writer and ex-runner, who is working on a biography of Zátopek, and he argues that no-one is likely ever to equal Zátopek's achievement in winning gold in three different distance events.
Zátopek retired from competitive running in 1957 and later fell heavily out of favour with the post- Dubcek regime in Czechoslovakia but was rehabilitated after 1989 and remains a much-cherished hero in Czech Republic and among the running community.

A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from the University of Brighton with specialist subjects including Biomedical Sciences, Marketing and History and Globalization and questions ranging from Chinese state infrastructure to the heraldic name for a squirrel via Trypanosoma and tzatziki.
Other Universities featured in this series include Royal Holloway University of London, Aberdeen, Plymouth, St Catharine's College Cambridge and Oxford Brookes.
