SAT 02:15 A History of the Infinite (b07wm0l1)
Where does this leave us?
Adrian Moore reaches the end of his journey through two and half millennia of philosophical thought about the infinite.
In this final episode, he comes to the conclusion that his voyage through the worlds of philosophy, theology, mathematics and cosmology has in the end led him to ourselves and our place in the universe.
With the help of writers and philosophers as diverse as Rene Descartes, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Iris Murdoch, Adrian returns to the theme of our finite nature and how that is fundamental to our sense of what is infinite. He considers the relation between the infinite and the transcendent and examines where the desire to look for something beyond ourselves belongs in a secular society.
Throughout the series, Adrian and his cast of philosophers have made connections, performed calculations and looked up at the stars in their attempts to clarify what we mean by the infinite. But, his history tells us, it all comes back to us and how we relate to what surpasses our finite nature.

Standard Deviation
A sitcom set in the Office of Local and National Statistics which, depending on who you ask, is either where the real power of government resides, or the place where fun goes to die.
In this opening episode, the team uncover an unexpected statistical correlation between eyebrows, strawberries and dangerous dogs.
Meet the team:
Graham Quicks, Head of the People and Places Department of the LNS. There are three things in the world that Graham will always have faith in – statistics, the supremacy of filofaxes over computers and the idea that cardigans will never go out of style.
Audrey Carr is the Survey Researcher. She believes passionately that statistics should be used as a tool to help the man on the street. Fortunately for her, she’s never actually met “the man in the street”. She’s also passionate about Jane Austen, Les Miserables and pretending that she doesn't work in an office with Daniel.
Daniel Porter is the Data Analyst. He used to work in the City, until the City realised he was a colossal waste of space. Daniel divides his time between manipulating statistics to further his vision of capitalism, necking energy drinks and telling people his thighs are really, really strong. He’s terrible.

Annie Briggs
An intimate portrait of the iconic but elusive English folksinger Annie Briggs.
Annie Briggs was a leading figure in the English folk revival of the early 1960s, inspiring Bert Jansch (famously, in Blackwater Side), Sandy Denny, The Watersons and many more. But she was a restless spirit, travelling through the British Isles and Ireland, finding songs and living close to the earth.
As Sandy Denny depicted her in The Pond and the Stream:
Annie wanders on the land.
She loves the freedom of the air.
She finds a friend in ev'ry place she goes.
There's always a face she knows.
I wish that I was there.
And so she remains, now a grandmother living by the water in the west of Scotland. She's always resolutely resisted celebrity and commercial success, withdrawing from the folk scene in the early 1970s, but her legacy - her voice and her attitude - continue to inspire and to carry a link to life as it was once lived in 'the imagined village'.
Annie talks to Alan Hall about childhood holidays singing along with the waves, writing songs while living on a beach in west Ireland, her garden and the wildlife that she shares it with, and the ballad tradition she discovered as a teenager and that she 'belongs to'.
Producer: Alan Hall
A Falling Tree production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in September 2016.
SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 (b00ln0b7)
Soho!
The singer Suggs returns to London's Soho, where he spent much of his unconventional childhood and where his jazz singer mother still lives.
He was introduced to the delights of the Colony Club as a six-year-old, and as a musician he continued to haunt the district.
Recording on location and mining the BBC archive, Suggs investigates how this unique community, complete with red-light district and village school, functions today, and whether it is still, or indeed ever was, a source of inspiration or merely a creative vacuum.
For decades, Soho was regarded as Britain's capital of sleaze and vice, but also a place where artists, writers, musicians and actors came to drink and philosophise. Tales of the area and its inhabitants abound, from painter Francis Bacon and George Melly at Muriel Belcher's infamous Colony Club to Jeffrey Bernard and Keith Waterhouse at the Coach and Horses and Dylan Thomas at The French House.
Soho was the birthplace of British pop, with the skifflers, jazzers and early rock 'n' rollers all making their names in the coffee bars of the 1950s. It was also the home of refugees of every type, including political dissidents, foreigners and homosexuals, from Casanova to Karl Marx, and Quentin Crisp to George Melly.
Yet in the 1950s, a new phrase was coined: 'Soho-itis'. It was said that if you enter Soho you will never get any work done, and you will never, ever leave. Many books, poems, songs and indeed careers were washed away with drink, but some artists, musicians and writers did survive the late nights, the fights and the booze, and took great inspiration from the place.
Producer: Justine Willett.

Taking Overs
Following a successful pilot, Hattie Morahan and Julian Rhind-Tutt star in Eddie Robson's sitcom about an alien invasion of a small English village.
Katrina Lyons was only visiting Cresdon Green, the village where she grew up, to borrow some money from her parents. But when she tried to head back to London, it turned out alien beings known as the Geonin had lowered a force field around the village and were refusing to let anyone in or out.
Unfortunately almost everyone in the village is too cowardly, apathetic, polite or stupid to stand up to this alien menace, so Katrina has no choice but to start the resistance movement herself. In the cricket pavilion.
In this episode, the force field around the village is keeping out all the rain, so the villagers can no longer moan about the weather. Uljabaan realises this means they're moaning about him instead.
Whilst he tries to construct a device to simulate rain inside the force field, Uljabaan distracts the village with a cricket match - aliens versus humans, with Richard captaining the humans. Katrina sees an opportunity to sabotage Uljabaan's computer - if she can keep the match going long enough.

The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. Irish police detective Strafford has been assigned to watch over the girls during their stay and so must form an uneasy alliance with their governess Miss Celia Nashe, an undercover MI5 officer charged with the princesses’ safety. However, with a contingent of soldiers patrolling the woods and rumours of IRA terrorists in the vicinity, they soon find their task even more treacherous than expected.
But is the real threat from outside, or from within Clonmillis Hall itself?
BW Black's imagined historical adventure and enthralling mystery read by Sorcha Cusack.

MON 06:30 The Lipinski (b04v2lyk)
The startling 300-year journey of a 'golden period' Stradivarius violin - through the lives of geniuses, dictators, refugees, ordinary people and the thieves who stole it violently in 2014.
An art crime story is the beginning of a journey around the world - and through varied lives and cultures - tracing the history of the Lipinski Stradivarius violin which left the hands of the master Antonio Stradivari in 1715.
In February 2014, Milwaukee Symphony leader Frank Almond was beaten and tasered after a sell-out performance - and the $6 million violin was snatched from his hands. National US media overload followed, as the instrument had become the blue-collar city's emblem of accessible high culture. The programme explores its impact not on the musical elite, but on the life of the city and its regular people.
And from the crime scene, we get into the rich international cast and stories.
Memories are shared by Evi Liivak, an Estonian violinist whose father was murdered by the Gestapo and who played in Second World War refugee camps before marrying one of the main translators at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials and coming to America.
Plus Peter Voight the Sussex luthier whose family have been making and repairing violins across Europe since the 17th century, the lawyer of Universal Allah, the Milwaukee barber imprisoned for the 2014 theft, and the local Police Chief who led the investigation.

Episode 1
Nature Table is comedian, broadcaster and writer Sue Perkins’ new comedy ‘Show & Tell’ series celebrating the natural world and all its funny eccentricities.
Taking the simple format of a ‘Show & Tell’, each episode Sue is joined by celebrity guests from the worlds of comedy and natural history. Each of the natural history guests brings an item linked to the wild world to share with the audience, be it an amazing fact or funny personal anecdote. Each item is a springboard for an enlightening and funny discussion, alongside fun games and challenges revealing more astonishing facts. We also hear from some of the London Zoo audience, a mix of London Zoo staff and members of the public, as they bring us their own natural history ‘show and tells’ for Sue and the guests to discuss.
Nature Table has a simple clear brief: to positively celebrate and promote the importance of all our planet’s wonderfully wild flora and fauna in a fun and easily grasped way... whilst at the same time having a giggle.

Blood
Fire
An epic 24 hours of drama inspired by the works of literature's greatest whistle blower, Emile Zola.
Passion, in every sense, is the theme of this episode, dramatised by Dan Rebellato.
Glenda Jackson stars as Dide, 104 years old, the matriarch to a family of wolves - the Rougon-Macquarts.
She is trapped in her small room in the local asylum in Plassans, southern France. Trapped, but omniscient as she broods over her extended family. As a young woman, she gave birth to two dynasties that exemplified French society. One legitimate - rich, powerful, obsessive and corrupt. The other illegitimate - poor, vulnerable, weak and depraved.
France is on the brink of a new empire. Dide's family is a turbulent mix of the good, the bad and the misguided. This episode, Fire, focuses on François and Martha who are happily married, living a quiet, bourgeois life. Abbé Faujas, a charismatic, sinister priest, arrives on their doorstep and announces he has come to live in their spare room. Black comedy and tension ensue as his scheming drives a wedge between the couple, uncovering the darker side of this sleepy provincial town.

A Potted History
Professor David Rothkopf speaks to decision makers from Tony Blair to Malcolm Rifkind, and from Zbigniew Brzezinski to General Wes Clark, to chart the rapid and radical transformation of modern diplomacy.
At the heart of each episode is one seminal event or turning point, through which Professor Rothkopf discuss how diplomacy has evolved and - in some cases - lastingly changed.
The Cuban Missile crisis, for example, is a familiar story of brinkmanship but we discover how subsequent accounts of that event were manipulated to create a narrative about strong coercive leadership - one which was not only at odds with the facts but which sent out the wrong messages about the conduct of diplomacy.
We also hear how dancing with the back of a chair honed the diplomatic skills of one of the 19th century's most prominent foreign ministers, and how hot drinks by a log fire in Norway broke the stalemate in middle east negotiations. A former spy reveals how espionage and diplomacy can be frequent if uncomfortable bedfellows.
And finally, we discover how so called twittocracy is replacing conventional etiquette and laying foundations for the invention of a new diplomacy.

Episode 1
Memoir by the world-renowned composer of symphonies, operas and film scores, Philip Glass.
'If you go to New York City to study music, you'll end up like your uncle Henry,' Glass's mother warned her incautious and curious nineteen-year-old son. It was the early summer of 1956, and Ida Glass was concerned that her precocious Philip, already a graduate of the University of Chicago, would end up an itinerant musician, playing in vaudeville houses and dance halls all over the country, just like his cigar-smoking, bantamweight uncle. One could hardly blame Mrs. Glass for worrying that her teenage son would end up as a musical vagabond after initially failing to get into Juilliard. Yet, the transformation of a young man from budding musical prodigy to world-renowned composer is the story of this memoir.
From his childhood in post-Second World War Baltimore to his student days in Chicago, at Juilliard, and his time in Paris, where he studied under the formidable Nadia Boulanger, Glass movingly recalls his early mentors while reconstructing the places that helped shape his artistic consciousness. Then, to the gritty streets of New York in the 1970s, where the composer worked as a cabbie, leading the life of a Parisian bohemian artist transported to late-twentieth-century America.
Yet even after Glass's talent was first widely recognized with the sensational premiere of Einstein on the Beach in 1976, even after he stopped renewing his hack license and gained international recognition for his operatic works, the son of a Baltimore record store owner never abandoned his earliest universal ideals, all of the highest artistic order.

Writer and historian Joshua Levine charts the life of the stamp - something of a checkered history - and tells a parallel story of the psychology of collecting.
Discovered by a 12-year-old Scottish boy in 1873, he sold the 1-Cent Magenta for a few shillings. Five years later it was bought by the Austrian, Phillipp Von Ferrary, the owner of the greatest stamp collection the world has ever seen. His entire collection was stolen by the French government, who sold it in 1919.
The stamp then passed through several hands, including those of Arthur Hind, an English textile dealer living in New York, who legend has it aquired the only other 1-Cent Magenta in existence - which he set alight, exclaiming 'Now there's only one again!".
Why do humans feel the need to collect, categorise and classify?
As we examine these stories of bitterness and misfortune, should we attribute a curse to the little stamp? Or should we, instead, blame it on the irresponsibility, greed and sense of entitlement which so often accompanies great wealth and privilege.

TUE 14:15 Friends & Foes - A Narrative History of Diplomacy (b08crx11)
Cuban Missile Crisis: The Wrong Lessons
Professor David Rothkopf discovers how White House narratives about the Cuban missile crisis resulted in the wrong lessons for diplomacy.
The Cuban Missile crisis was said to be a textbook example of how strong unwavering leadership can resolve existential crises. But new evidence reveals that the narrative promoted at the time by the White House was flawed. In fact, the Kennedy administration embarked on a strategy of secret diplomacy which involved missile swaps. It also resulted in behind the scenes negotiations including none other than the lawyer James Donovan, featured in the recent Hollywood spy film The Bridge.
Using interviews with academics and members of the national security archive, Professor David Rothkopf separates the fact from fiction surrounding this apocalyptic event which brought the world closer than ever before to annihilation.
He argues that the real lessons for diplomacy are very different from the ones we have been fed for years.

Series 2
Diarmuid and Grainne
Aisling Bea and Yasmine Akram get romantic (not like that) to tell the tale of the famous young lovers Diarmuid and Grainne. It's an affair which ended like most Irish stories - terribly.
Series two of the duo's unique comedic, highly irreverent take on Irish folklore.
Still the very best pals, Aisling and Yasmine take their role explaining Irish legends to the British nation very seriously indeed. That said, it would appear that they haven't had the time to do much research, work out who is doing which parts, edit out the chat or learn how to work the sound desk.
With a vast vault of fantastical myths, mixed with 21st century references to help you along, prepare for some very silly lessons in life, love and the crazy shenanigans of old Ireland and modern Irish.

THU 06:30 Roger's Rabbits (b016k6xl)
In his spare time, satirist Roger Law used to breed rabbits, but sadly none of them ever came up to the exacting standards of the British Rabbit Council. Now he's determined to find out the secret of breeding the perfect English rabbit.
A portrait of this bunny underworld is long overdue. Roger will be looking at his favourite, the Old English Spot, one of the country's oldest breeds. A drawing of the perfect English Rabbit was made by Victorian artist Robert Wippell circa 1838. To breed pedigree Old English for exhibition, their spots must accord with Wippell's drawing as closely as possible. The judges mark the spots to a total of 100 points. Unfortunately some judges like small spots, others large ones. Famous breeder of English rabbits, Fred Haslam, commented on the process, "Only he who attempts the absurd is capable of achieving the impossible." The perfect English Rabbit is yet to be born.
Roger will be visiting Thirsk in Yorkshire and Sandringham in Norfolk to talk to the best breeders. He'll find out what drives someone to set up hutches for a mind boggling 100 rabbits in their back garden, and how some people live, breathe and dream rabbits. The ultimate dream is the ultimate rabbit: a perfect English Spot.
But is it really possible? Roger burrows into the facts.

David Letterman/Michael Douglas
More in depth interviews from WNYC Radio in New York hosted by Alec Baldwin.
Alec gives the listener a unique insight into the lives of artists, policy makers and performers, sidestepping the predictable by taking listeners inside the dressing rooms, apartments, and offices.
Specially curated for BBC Radio 4 Extra, the series continues with Alec talking to a legendary US TV interviewer, and a member of a Hollywood dynasty.
David Letterman began his Late Night gig as a self-described “gap-toothed, unknown smart ass.” He began his television career as a weatherman, but moved rapidly up to anchorman and talk show host. He left for L.A. and, after only three years on the comedy scene there, he found himself guest-hosting the Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. He got his own show in 1982, where he developed his off the cuff comedy style, often featuring ludicrous live challenges to the studio audience and members of the public, his “10 Ten Lists”, as well as interviewing the famous and not so famous. In 2012 he spoke to Alec about how a quintuple by-pass and the birth of a child have dramatically shifted his priorities.
David Letterman retired from his TV show in 2015.
In 2011 Alec spoke with a Hollywood star who’d lived in the same apartment overlooking New York’s Central Park for decades. Michael Douglas talks about what makes a great director and why playing the villain is so wonderful. Douglas reveals how competition with his father, legendary actor Kirk Douglas (103 in December 2019), shaped both his career and his life as a parent. He talks about his marriage to another acting star, Catherine Zeta Jones, and being much more honest with his young daughter than he ever thought he’d be. Douglas explains how his father’s early brush with death, and his own cancer diagnosis affected them each in different ways.

Taking the Middle East Shuttle
Professor David Rothkopf discovers how the fallout from the Yom Kippur war in 1974 resulted in the development of Henry Kissinger's shuttle diplomacy.
In January 1975, the US Secretary of state Henry Kissinger embarked on an exhausting timetable of talks, shuttling between Egypt and Israel and negotiating a disengagement agreement in the aftermath of the so called Yom Kippur war. This was the first time such a tactic had been used and has since became the hallmark of diplomacy where two sides cannot or will not sit down with each other.
We hear how Kissinger navigated the delicate negotiations, second guessing and often wooing the warring nations leaders into accepting a dramatic result, the like of which had never yet been seen in this most bitter of international disputes.
But, as Professor Rothkopf discovers, shuttle diplomacy can only work in the hands of a deft negotiator.

FRI 06:30 Beckett in Brooklyn (b04v30zx)
A disembodied mouth hovers 8 feet above the stage and appears to oscillate wildly around the pitch-black auditorium.
Blindfolded, her head strapped into a harness, Irish actor Lisa Dwan delivers the frenetic, roller-coaster stream of consciousness that is Samuel Beckett's 'Not I'. Alongside 'Footfalls' and 'Rockaby', the play forms one part of a trilogy of intensely demanding one-woman Beckett works which Lisa has been performing to packed houses across the UK & Ireland.
Now, as Lisa takes her Beckett trilogy across the Atlantic to the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Harvey Theatre, we find her immersed in a whirlwind of rave reviews, TV appearances and a US theatre-going public heavily preoccupied with Ebola, Isis and the uncertainty of our times.
As the curtain prepares to fall for the last time, we discover the true extent of Lisa's commitment to these dark and challenging roles, what the impact of performing them has been on her and if, 25 years after the Irish playwright's death, she may have shown us that Samuel Beckett's work matters more than ever.

Multi-Parameter Database Search
A sitcom set in the Office of Local and National Statistics which, depending on who you ask, is either where the real power of government resides, or the place where fun goes to die.
In this episode, a database linking of Ribena and MI5 makes Graham reach for his Stress Cardigan. Also, Jane Austen and a brick.
Mrs. Wilkins has worked as tea lady, archivist and maintenance guru for 15 years. She knows where the bodies are buried. We must stress that that is a figure of speech.

Small Nation, Big Diplomacy

In 1973, a single handshake on the White House lawn between the Israeli and Palestinian leaders marked the end of decades of confrontation and conflict. But this breakthrough was brokered not through superpower intervention but with the help of Norway.
Crucially it was done through secret informal communications called 'back channel diplomacy'.
Professor Rothkopf hears from the negotiators about how they brought the two sides together under the cover of an academic conference and how, ultimately, their careful diplomacy resulted in the landmark Oslo accords.
But, as he discovers, back channel diplomacy does not always work.

Starting Over
Second series of the award-nominated comedy drama by Pete Jackson, set in Alcoholics Anonymous and inspired by his own road to recovery. Starring Sue Johnston, John Hannah, Eddie Marsan, Rebecca Front, Paul Kaye and Julia Deakin.
It follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Taking place entirely at their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and - most importantly - tell their stories.
In this first episode, Fiona has a problem she thinks only Danno can solve. But Danno has his own problems - and he's on the run.
Marion ...... Julia Deakin
Fiona ...... Rebecca Front
Simon ...... John Hannah
Julie ...... Sue Johnston
Danno ...... Paul Kaye
Andy ...... Eddie Marsan
Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls - with one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
There are lots of different kinds of AA meetings. Love in Recovery is about meetings where people tell their stories. There are funny stories, sad stories, stories of small victories and milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and those stories that you really shouldn't laugh at - but still do, along with the storyteller.
Written and created by Pete Jackson.
Producer/Director: Ben Worsfield
