SAT 01:30 Loud Organs His Glory (b0103wyx)
Anyone who has watched a BBC Prom or visited St Paul's or Salisbury or Hereford or Truro Cathedral will have seen a "Father Willis" organ.
Discover the story of the man who through a blend of engineering ability, musical ambition and massive self-confidence became the dominant organ builder of the Victorian era. It was an era in which huge organs were suddenly required in both cathedrals and the new town halls appearing all over the country.
Simon Townley tells the story of 'Father' Henry Willis from his relatively humble beginnings as the son of a London builder to the heights of Victorian society. By winning a competition at the Great Exhibition in 1851, Willis set himself on a road which was to lead to the building of over a thousand organs. Many are still working today, even if they've been altered over the years. What makes the Willis organs special, and makes organists today acknowledge their greatness in hushed tones, is the subject of this programme.
Simon visits the current Willis factory in Liverpool where new organs are still built and old Willis machines are revitalised.
He plays the organ in Winchester Cathedral, the organ that won the Great Exhibition competition and was squeezed into the cathedral by the then organist SS Wesley, and he finds out more about the man whose love of yachting was matched only by his belief that anything was possible when it came to the building of organs. If that meant splitting an organ in two, putting the two parts on either side of a cathedral transept and linking the whole lot through a system of subterranean pipes then that's what he would do... and he did, in the case of St Paul's Cathedral.
But essentially the Father Willis story is about the details that earned his reputation. The reed technology that no one at the time could match, the use of new steam-generated wind and the design of organ consoles that gave organists like Willis himself a control that they'd never enjoyed before.
It's a story of the king of instruments built at a time of supreme national self-confidence by a man who embodied the spirit of the age and gave it voice.

SAT 02:15 A History of Britain in Numbers (b052m5b1)
Series 2
Public Spending
Andrew Dilnot, chair of the UK Statistics Authority (2012-2017), brings to life the numbers conveying the big trends that have transformed the shape and scope of the British state.
He looks at what governments through the centuries have spent, borrowed, taxed, regulated and built; and he considers how we came to organise a national life that reaches into every corner of private life, from the delivery of pensions and healthcare to the surveillance of emails or rules about the temperature of a hot cup of tea.
By one measure, the modern British state is roughly 7,000 times bigger than the Tudor state. How and why did that happen?
The story of the state unfolds through muddy fields, smugglers coves and a Victorian village lock-up. Numbers become sound as we hear the dramatic scale of change that has occurred over the centuries.
The evolution of the state may be driven less by party politics than party politicians might like us to think. Although the state's size and functions are a natural subject of fierce political argument, the impetus for the biggest changes has often come from another source - such as war, economic growth, and the power that arises from knowledge.
In this programme, Andrew looks at public spending.

Work is A Four Letter Word
Many of us have grown up with the belief that a strong work ethic is a positive thing, and that by contrast idle hands are the devil's playthings.
According to Professor Andrew Hussey, that argument makes very little sense. Starting off with a line from the Cilla Black song 'Work is a Four Letter Word' he offers a powerful counter-argument by navigating the ideas of, among others, Bertrand Russell, John Ruskin and the Situationists in France, whose graffiti slogan 'Ne Travaillez Jamais' - never work - still appears regularly on Parisian streets. Hussey argues that the corporate culture in particular, born out of mid-20th Century America and built upon ideologies of work developed during the industrial revolution and on through to the development of the assembly line, can have a hugely corrosive impact on people's lives.
The programme features the voices of workers from the 1930s through to the present day, describing working life in call centres where even a trip to the toilet is timed by management. Hussey doesn't, however, suggest that we all take to the sofa to watch TV and eat crisps, though; instead he argues that by taking control of the work we do and the way we do it, work can actually become a positive force in our lives, once stripped of what he regards as the caustic power of modern managerialism.

Domestic audiences topped 20 million, and the audience worldwide was said to number 30 million. It starred Liverpudlian comic Tommy Handley, who with Ted Kavanagh created the series named after the phrase newspapers often used to describe Hitler: It's That Man Again!

SUN 09:00 The Pulse Glass (Omnibus) (m000bvgx)
Gillian Tindall’s reflection on family and social history and the changing meaning of the objects that survive the passing of time is a fascinating exploration into memory, loss and how we construct the past.
Most of the objects that surround us, no matter how important in their time, will eventually be lost and forgotten. But a few, for reasons of sentiment, chance, conservation or simple inaction, escape destruction and gain new meanings. A toy train, a stack of letters in a family attic, a piece of medical equipment long out of use - each opens a window into the past and prompts an exploration into the nature of permanence.
In The Pulse Glass and the Beat of Other Hearts, Tindall explores what has survived of her own family’s history, as well as the remnants of a wider social history, glimpsed through the chance survival of artefacts that have survived against the odds of history and forgetting.
Gillian Tindall is a novelist and historian. She combines a sharp eye for the detail of individual and domestic history with an imaginative understanding of the social and political geography of the past to find and follow the traces of past lives that survive all around us. She has written on the history of Kentish Town (The Fields Beneath), on the history of London’s Southbank through the generations living in one house (The House by the Thames), on a village in rural France through the letters written to one young girl (Celestine: Voices From a French Village), on her own family’s connection with the Left Bank in Paris (Footsteps in Paris), and on London’s past through the route to be followed by Crossrail (The Tunnel Through Time). She has lived in the same house in London for over fifty years.

After Rachel's daughter Rosie died, the friends wanted to do something positive, but their route to the finish of the charity run wasn’t quite the same as that of the other runners. Fi Glover introduces another conversation in the series that proves it's surprising what you hear when you listen.
The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation with someone close to them about a subject they've never discussed intimately before. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. Man Versus God
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive and chooses Man Versus God featuring Muhammad Iqbal’s Islamic poem Shikwa.
Storyteller Seema Anand explores Shikwa, one of the most famous and enduring works of Islamic literature. The poem is an audacious and heartfelt complaint in lyrical Urdu about all the many ways in which God has let Muslims down.
When it was first recited by Iqbal at a public gathering in Lahore in 1911, a fatwa was issued by Islamic scholars who were shocked by its seemingly outrageous impudence: here was Man daring to challenge the wisdom of God!
Like many works by Iqbal, the poem is presented as a dialogue between Man and God, a quite revolutionary concept in Islamic literature and with echoes of Milton's Paradise Lost. Iqbal felt strongly that Islam should be open to reform and questioning - and many of his ideas are as powerfully relevant today as they were 100 years ago.
Iqbal is often called the spiritual father of Pakistan for using poetry to raise self-awareness amongst Muslims in pre-partition India so that they would eventually rise up and seek a separate nation. His poems are still recited at social gatherings all across the Muslim world (Shikwa is now even available as an iPhone app) but his poetry has a much wider appeal than just for Muslims. It contains many universal ideas about the relationship between Man, Earth and Divinity which resonate to this day.
Seema Anand (who is not Muslim) is learning to translate the poem with the dream that one day she too will be able to recite it and bring it to new audiences in Britain. Despite the challenge of learning a poem in a language she barely knows and with intricate imagery and ideas drawn from earlier Sufi and Persian poets, it's something she pursues because she's convinced the beauty of the verse nourishes the soul.

SUN 23:15 Hannah Gadsby: Arts Clown (b05419l4)
Edouard Manet's Olympia
Art historian Hannah Gadsby kicks off her comedy lectures about four masterpieces, with Edouard Manet's masterpiece 'Olympia'.
She shares her first encounter with the art work as well as looking at what critics had to say about it at the time it was created.
Born in Tasmania, Hannah's first encounters with art was solely through books. These books taught her the language of art appreciation but they also legitimised her desire to look at 'boobs'. This was just as well as Hannah realised in her teens that she was 'a little bit lesbian' but homosexuality was still illegal in Tasmania at that time.
The painting 'Olympia' was first exhibited in Paris in 1865. It made a lot of people very angry at the time. Here was a reclining nude but this woman had attitude, looking right at the observer with no embarrassment or demureness. She was a whore - what of it?
The woman who posed for the painting was Victorine Meurent, not a prostitute but an artist in her own right and, says Gadsby, surely she had a major influence on Manet's considerably feminist approach to 'the reclining nude' in this painting.
Hannah explains what makes 'Olympia' a cornerstone of modern art and what bring her personally back to this painting again and again.
Hannah Gadsby is assisted in this series by her very own 'Quotebot' who has been inputted with every quote that's ever been written about art.
Quotebot sounds remarkably like comedy legend and all-round boffin John Lloyd.

Crime writer Mike Phillips investigates the coming of age of black British crime fiction and asks why there is still a reluctance to see the black detective as hero.
In recent years as the ethnic mix in the UK has changed, the literature produced by black Britons has embraced broader themes beyond questions of identity and freedom. The autobiographical narratives of the past are being superseded by a new generation of writers who are tackling other genres - notably crime fiction.
Mike Phillips was one of the first to delve into this area with Sam Dean, the journalist who features in his novels Blood Rights and The Late Candidate. In this programme, he meets other writers who are following his example, and discovers what their work tells us about modern Britain. The UK still lags behind the US where novelists such as Walter Mosley and Barbara Neely have captured the black crime fiction genre. Phillips discovers why this is the case.

Social Security
In this sixth programme, Andrew turns to social security.

In Mary's house, money is scarce and space is tight. But these are good times and everything revolves around the force of nature that is her mum.
Mary's dad is a tea salesman and she loves tagging along on his sales calls to independent shops, selling everything from Chappie dog food and Heinz soups to Homepride flour and Kellogg's Corn Flakes. And even as a six-year-old, the girl who will one day be known as "Mary Queen of Shops" knows there is a world enclosed in the four tiny letters of the word 'shop'.

TUE 06:30 Was Gertrude Stein Any Good? (b01r0dys)
Gertrude Stein has been called a genius and an idiot. So which was she? For some Stein is on a literary par with her contemporaries and friends; James Joyce, T.S Eliot, Marcel Proust or Ezra Pound, but for others she's a fraud, the 'eminent idiot' of the Modernist period, writing gibberish and passing it off as art.
There's no doubting the importance of Stein as a creative catalyst. She gathered some of the greatest artists of the 20th century into her circle, offering financial, emotional and intellectual support. Picasso and Hemingway in particular cited her importance to their work.
She spent much of her life working on her opus, 'The Making of Americans', a book likened to Joyce's Ulysses in its scale, ambition and incomprehensibility. Does it deserve re-examination? Is it fair that Joyce is lauded and Stein marginalised?
Poet and presenter Ian McMillan asks if Getrude Stein was any good?

Amelia Bullmore
It’s time to turn to crime on Telling Tales, with the multi-talented Amelia Bullmore.
After studying drama at Manchester University, Amelia landed a role on Coronation Street. It was her first job on television and many memorable roles have followed, including Kay Hope, Head of Sustainability in 2012, Alan Partridge’s Ukrainian girlfriend Sonja, and DCI Gill Murray in Scott & Bailey.
After putting her writing on hold, Amelia was encouraged by Niamh Cusack to write a pilot, when she was pregnant. Though the resulting legal drama didn’t get commissioned, it brought Amelia to the attention of the team behind This Life. She wrote several scripts for the second series, becoming part of a team that won the Writers Guild Award for best TV drama in 1997.
Amelia’s move into crime began with another pilot for ITV: a drama about a fast-tracked female DCI in London, who is compromised by a personal secret. This pilot became a radio drama, set in Manchester and starring Maxine Peake, which eventually ran for five series on BBC Radio 4.
We hear a 45 minute drama from 2012, titled Craven: Looking For Mr King, in which Sue - the titular DCI -investigates a made-for-tabloid murder, involving a rich man, a sports car, and a well-known beauty spot.
Amelia talks about how acting informs her writing, and what she learned from working with the ground-breaking comedian Chris Morris, and later with Sally Wainwright on Scott & Bailey.
We also hear about Amelia’s latest writing project, Traces, a crime thriller based in the world of forensics and based on an original idea by the best-selling Scottish author Val McDermid. It re-unites Amelia with Red Productions, who brought Craven to life for Radio 4.
Made for Radio 4 Extra.

Debt
In programme seven, Andrew analyses the numbers around debt.

For the young Mary Portas, life is full of opportunity which she'll seize as soon as she's old enough for a Saturday job. She's never happier than when she's singing along to David Bowie songs with her brothers and sister, with backcombed hair and fuchsia eye shadow.
Her mum, a stickler for the rules when it comes to school and church, is happy to encourage her children's self-expression. But this world of chaotic creativity is blown apart when Mary's mother is taken seriously ill.

WED 06:30 Ruby Murray: The Secret Story of Curry (b00rtg89)
The British are mad about curry - 'Ruby Murray' in Cockney rhyming slang.
Alkarim Jivani speaks to curry lovers north and south of the border to find out how curry came to be so intimately linked with the British sense of identity.
Historically, the English have been seen as distrustful of foreigners and wary of foreign food. So the nation's long love affair with curry - which is as much working class as colonial - is a surprising one. Even more curious is how this passion for curry is now recognised as part of the British identity. Vindaloo was the unofficial song of England's 1998 World Cup team - an unlikely battlecry for English football fans. In 2001, Robin Cook, then Foreign Secretary, declared that chicken tikka masala was the nation's most popular dish. Chicken tikka masala is even included by the Ministry of Defence in its operational ration packs to bring the troops some home comfort.
Contributors include:
* Madhur Jaffrey, whose enormously popular 1982 BBC TV series Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cookery revolutionised British Indian cuisine.
* Michelin-starred chef, Atul Kochhar (Great British Menu, Saturday Kitchen), known for his masterful use of spices and Indian twist to modern British cuisine.
* Namita Panjabi, Group Director, Masala World (Veeraswamy, Chutney Mary, Amaya, and Masala Zone).

THU 07:00 Ballylenon (b00y8xdx)
Series 8
More News Than Is Fit to Print
Ballylenon, County Donegal. Pop. 1,999 was founded by St Lenon of Padua, when he fell into the river at this spot in 953. Ballylenon is situated on the shores of Lough Swilly with entrancing views of Muckish Mountain, in the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe. (Note: Ballylenon is a fictional name, but the other landmarks are identifiable.)
In this society, there exists an uneasy balance of interests. Communication has all the appearances of power, and in Ballylenon, communication means the local Telephone Exchange and Post Office. Both these are firmly in the control of sisters, Vera and Muriel McConkey, who in cahoots with hotelier and funeral undertaker, Phonsie Doherty, would seek to rule the roost in Ballylenon. However, other forces have their own guiding principles, and where the McConkey sisters and Mr Doherty, aided by The Vindicator, would dominate reactionary thinking, a dangerous liberal tendency is championed by Vivienne and Rev. Samuel Hawthorne, and the somewhat unlikely, Guard Gallagher. The antagonism between these camps is only ever thinly veiled.
In this brand new series, Christopher Fitz-Simon takes a jocose but jaundiced look at 1960's Ireland, where we discover
Muriel McConachie , 62. Spinster remnant of a family once active in politics, Muriel inherited the corner shop and, due to her Councillor father's influence, has the Post Office franchise. Known as the eyes of Ballylenon, Muriel, the Honouree Secretary of the Development Association, has a long-term 'understanding' with its Chair, Phonsie Doherty. She is a gentle personality, but misses nothing and can see a midge on a mare's arse in Tyrone.
We also discover, Vera McConachie, 61, Muriel's younger and more forthright spinster sister who runs the 10-line manual Telephone Exchange and is known as the Ears of Ballylenon. Every call goes through her switchboard, its content noted, discussed and any necessary action taken. She also writes the Horoscope anonymously for the Donegal Vindicator.
The McConkey's closest confidant is Phonsie [Alphonsus] Doherty. 58. Phonsie is a widower, proprietor of the Swilly Arms Hotel and of Doherty's Estate Agency and Funeral Furnishers and Chair of the Development Association. Up to the present is politically 'in' and therefore in the way of knowing what grants and subsidies are available for all manner of projects. His relationship with Muriel McConachie is proprietorial rather than romantic.
If there is a thorn in the side of this trio it is, Vivienne Hawthorne, 30, the former Miss Boal. Bright, breezy, busy primary schoolteacher. Organist and choir-mistress of the Presbyterian congregation. Though seemingly rationalist, Vivienne is secretly much influenced by horoscopes. She is supporter of cultural causes like the music festival and architectural conservation. And though apparently straightforward, she achieves certain aims by devious means.

The first of two dramatisations of Robert Louis Stevenson's gripping novellas set in Samoa and written while he lived there.
David Tennant stars as Wiltshire, a trader freshly arrived on a Samoan Island. He marries a native girl, only to find himself tabooed by the rest of the inhabitants.
At the height of his powers, Stevenson tackled the most pressing theme on the islands - the vicious effects of colonialism including slavery, racism, sexual exploitation and the conflict between traditional and modern values. The subjects are as vivid today as in 1894 and these compelling and violent stories feature some of the most driven, dangerous and obsessive characters in fiction. Joseph Conrad drew on these novellas for Heart of Darkness.

Order and Punishment
In programme nine, Andrew explores the numbers around building the state.

Ten months after her mother's sudden death, Mary's dad is finally beginning to emerge from his grief. At the Widows' and Widowers' Club, his brylcreemed hair and Night Fever dance moves prove attractive - soon he's bringing his new girlfriend Rebecca to meet the family.
Mary has started a course in 'visual merchandising' at the local college, but she knows her future doesn't lie in anything as mundane as shops – she spends her nights at the Roxy in Soho listening to Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees, The Clash and The Jam, and craves drama and excitement.
Then, one work experience at Harvey Nichols, she begins to see that shop windows can be as theatrical as any stage. They are a performance, a fantasy landscape where anything could be played out.
But just as Mary starts to see a future for herself and an outlet for her talents, the foundations of her life are pulled from beneath her when her father announces his intention to sell the family home and move in with Rebecca.

In the final programme of the series, Andrew turns his attention to enfranchisement.

FRI 18:30 Last Orders (b00qpslw)
Episode 1
A celebration of the pub landlord and landlady.
With pubs disappearing at the rate of more than three a day , signalling one of the most rapid cultural shifts of recent times, half a dozen landlords and landladies reflect on life as a licensee and explore what we're in danger of losing besides the beer and the buildings.
This rueful view from behind the bar includes reflections on the qualities of a good landlord or landlady; their role as community confessional and settler of tap room fights, dispenser of best bitter and pearls of wisdom.
We hear from old hands like Barbara, an ex-Bunny girl who runs the Grapes in London's Limehouse; Tetley Dave who fought a battle to keep the Shoulder of Mutton from closing in Castleford; Maureen from the Waggon and Horses at Langsett who's famous for her pies ; ex miner Dennis from Barnsley, whose concern is health and safety; stand-up comedian Toby- who recalls lining up six pints apiece for the miners coming off shift at his auntie's pub in a Yorkshire pit village ; and former Cambridge academic Tim, who's taken early retirement to open his first pub in York - the Pheonix- just as many others are shutting up shop.
How have these landlords and landladies kept their marriages together , living and working on the premises? How much of a tempatation was it to hit the top shelf and go for the optics after a hard day's graft behind the bar? Why do they think the pub can teach the next generation how to hold their drink .And how do they handle an objectionable customer without starting a wild-west barroom brawl?
Producer Lindsay Leonard.

10 Lime Street
BBC Arts Correspondent, Rebecca Jones, introduces the best new audio dramas from the New Creatives.
BBC Arts and Arts Council England have joined forces to give 500 emerging artists the chance to tell the stories they want to tell. New Creatives are aged between 16 and 30 - and their work is featuring on BBC TV, online and radio.
BBC Radio 4 Extra is the place to hear the very best dramas from these writers new to radio. And the writers themselves tell us what inspired them to explore the world of sound.
In this episode we have an investigation in sound - into events that happened in the United States over 90 years ago.
10 Lime Street is written by Myrto Farmaki and is developed from original transcripts from the Society for Psychical Research archive. It reimagines extracts from a series of séances that famously took place in the house of Margery Crandon. The wife of a Boston surgeon, Margery claimed to be a medium, able to channel the spirit of her dead brother, Walter. She was visited by the rich, the famous and the scientifically incredulous.
