SAT 01:30 Percy Edwards Showdown (b00htwx7)
David Attenborough stars in a new role: radio quizmaster - in a show all about Percy Edwards, who enjoyed a 70 year career impersonating birds and beasts. That was a first, and so is this programme - a documentary game-show, combining the strange story of Percy's life, with archive of his impersonations, interviews with those who knew him, and a quiz. Among the contestants are Bill Oddie and the comedian Alex Horne.Percy Edwards discovered his talent for talking like animals when he was seven. Dozing under a tree, he heard what he thought was a wolf-whistle and discovered that it was a bird. For several weeks, Edwards kept hearing this greenfinch and found that, with practice, he could imitate it. He even took to eating canary seed before going to bed in the hope that he would wake in the morning singing like a bird.Eventually he was able to produce the sound of more than 600 birds, and some other beasts (his was the voice of the killer whale in Orca, the alien in Alien and he provided sheep noises for Kate Bush's song The Dreaming). He took to the stage aged 11, was a stalwart of the Generation Game in the 1970's and gave his final performance aged 80 at the London palladium in 1989. His repertoire was extraordinary, all 13 calls of the chaffinch, the strangely grinding sound of the amorous capercaille and corgis barking in Welsh accents. Quizmaster Attenborough will play bird calls for the teams to identify, some of which will not be the birds, but Percy's impressions, so can they tell the difference? They will be asked not only the identity of the bird, but its circumstances. Is this a cry of distress, alarm or a sexy song? Woven into the rounds will be snippets about Edwards' life from the BBC?s archive ? he appeared on Parkinson, Wogan and Morecambe & Wise - revealing the importance of his work for raising the public?s awareness of wildlife, and the significance of his role as an ornithologist. Percy Edwards died in 1996 aged 88. Producers: Emma Legg and Julian MayFirst broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2009.

Antony Sher - Year of the Fat Knight
Episode 5
Antony Sher recounts the year in which he created and performed his version of Shakespeare's Falstaff - despite never intending to undertake such an iconic role.Thirty years ago, a promising young actor published his account of preparing for and playing the role of Richard III. Antony Sher's Year of the King has since become a classic of theatre literature. In 2014, Sher - in his 60s - was cast as Falstaff in Gregory Doran's Royal Shakespeare Company production of the two parts of Henry IV. Both the production and Sher's Falstaff were acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, with Sher winning the Critics' Circle Award for Best Shakespearean Performance.Year of the Fat Knight is Antony Sher's account of researching, rehearsing and performing one of Shakespeare's best-known and most popular characters. He tells us how he had doubts about playing the part at all; how he sought to reconcile Falstaff's obesity, drunkenness, cowardice and charm; how he wrestled with the fat suit needed to bulk him up; and how he explored the complexities and contradictions of this comic yet often dangerous personality. On the way, Sher paints a uniquely close-up portrait of the RSC at work.Read by Antony SherProduced by Clive BrillA Brill Production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2015.

Blood
At the end of May 2013, Gerald Scarfe's weekly illustration in the Sunday Times was a meat cleaver wedged into a pool of blood. A Sympathetic Eye
Welcome to the 1960s and the earliest days of a new TV channel, BBC2, determined to explore the ordinary and extraordinary fringes of a rapidly changing society. With its new documentary strand Man Alive, it set out to bring "human affairs, not current affairs" to our TV sets, with all the candour and emotion that statement promised. In this programme, Simon Farquhar examines how TV, social hierarchies and norms were rapidly evolving in front of our eyes.As the generation gap yawned, class divisions became blurred, traditional relations between men and women were challenged, and questions were asked about attitudes to sex and sexuality, Man Alive documented it all with a sympathetic eye and its trademark question: How do you feel?Contributors include Sir David Attenborough, Dame Esther Rantzen, Twiggy, David McGillivray, Vivienne Barton and Dr Jill Singer.Producer: Adam Bowen.First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2015.
SAT 09:00 Suburbia (b05n3yjq)
What created suburbia, when and how?In the 19th century the first suburban districts sprang up around city centres (at first London and Manchester) to accommodate those who wanted to escape the squalid conditions of the industrial town. From the mid-19th century the development of the railways (like the Metropolitan line to Middlesex and then Bucks), made it possible for the majority of the city's population to reside outside the city and to commute into the centre for work. The railway could take you from Middlesex to The City, from Bucks to Baker Street. It was the birth of Metroland, as celebrated by poet Sir John Betjeman. But the suburbs were more than just about planning and building; they developed a culture set apart from the metropolitan influence of the sinful city. In the suburbs grew a whole lifestyle of refinement, respectability and aspiration. And along with their distance from the city came the disdain of the fashionable non-suburbanites: "How very suburban!" became synonymous with a sneering disdain for conventionality.Simon Fanshawe explores Suburbia as a place of both continuity and change. Through poems, TV sitcom, history and commentary he traces the story of the suburbs – how they came to be – and also their cultural influence on British lifestyle from fashion, architecture, music, morals, gardening and social one-upmanship. From Betjeman to Reggie Perrin through, amongst other things, Mike Leigh's Abigail's Party, Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole, TV sitcom The Good Life, the sketches of Monty Python, and the birth of punk rock.Simon explores what the suburbs were originally, what they have become and how; despite changes in demographics and social mobility, they still typify a very British set of values. The programme also features exclusive interviews with the likes of Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Penelope Keith.Producer: Mike GreenwoodMade for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Pier Productions.

The Food Industry
Andrew Maxwell is one of the UK's most informed and fearless stand ups.In this series of one-off stand up shows, he uses his trademark intelligence and political incisiveness to dig behind the clichés and assumptions about four possible threats to British society: food, the internet, drugs and Nationalism.Andrew kicks off with a look at the food industry. From horseburgers right up to snail ice-cream, it seems like there's something wrong with every rung of the food ladder. But given that food is essential to survival, shouldn't we be clearer about what it is we want from the industry that provides it?This series will showcase a comedian at the top of his abilities tackling difficult and important 'slow news' topics with a depth and perceptiveness that remains outside the remit of mainstream 'topical' comedy.Written and performed by ..... Ardal O'Hanlon plays Smallbone - an idiot angel who's sent to earth to fix his mistakes. In this first episode, Smallbone learns to use his new human body and ends up taking on the CEO of Grapefruit, a powerful technology company that wants to knock down the local library to expand their store. In 1885, God (Geoff McGivern) nodded off. In 2015, he awoke to discover that his idiot servant, the angel Smallbone, had accidentally handed out God's plans for the next millennium when he was only meant to hand out plans for the next century. A thousand years of leisurely human progression has been crammed into the last 130. No wonder we're all so stressed. We weren't even meant to have pocket calculators until 2550.Not only that, but God's blueprints should have run out in the mid-eighties – but we kept going. Humans are now inventing things God never even dreamed of - mobile phones, wireless internet and Made in Chelsea.Smallbone is cast down to Earth in human form by God, tasked with the dauntingly vague mission of 'reversing the last thirteen decades of human progression'. The problem is that Smallbone is the world's biggest fan - he loves modern technology and his new human body, and he becomes distracted by everything that he's meant to destroy. Especially escalators.Smallbone.......Ardal O'HanlonGod.................Geoff McGivernTanya..............Esther SmithToby................Mike WozniakSusan..............Ruth BrattSupporting Roles: Duncan Wisbey and Ruth BrattWritten by Mark DaydyProduced by Ben WorsfieldA Lucky Giant production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2015.

For many years, art critic Brian Sewell was a devoted fan of Stock Car Racing. In this programme, he explores his passion for these battered beasts of the race track, as he visits the Wimbledon Stadium for a night at the races.Stock car racing was brought to Britain in 1954 by 'Digger' Pugh who'd first seen it in America. The idea was to take everyday road cars and race them on the track. Unlike other forms of racing, contact between cars was allowed, making it a hugely popular spectator sport. During Stock Car racing's golden era in the Fifties and Sixties, races attracted huge crowds to stadia up and down the country. These days, Stock Car racing still has a devoted following. In this programme, Brian Sewell gets to the bottom of his passion, a passion which celebrates speed, exhaust fumes, driving skill and pure throbbing horse power. He meets Pete Tucker, one of the last surviving drivers to drive in the first British Stock Car races, and talks to the people involved in Stock Car racing today.Brian speaks to Pete Tucker who drove in the first ever British Stock Car races; Janice Bell, daughter of Digger Pugh, the man who brought stock car racing to Britain; George Heath a driver of Banger cars; Paul Hugget, writer for Stock Car magazine Wheelspin.Producer: Caroline HughesA Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2010.

This week’s episode takes a trip to the unpronounceable village of Yxsjö with the writer, comedian and self-confessed Swedophile Danny Robins. From comedy revue beginnings, performing alongside Marcus Brigstocke and Dan Tetsell at Bristol University, Danny has gone on to write numerous sketches, as well as scripts for sitcom, stage and documentaries. One early live show, The Museum Of Everything, became a Sony-nominated series for Radio 4. And he’s since become a radio regular, writing for Dead Ringers, Hudson & Pepperdine, Armando Iannucci, and co-creating Rudy’s Rare Records with Lenny Henry; while his television work includes Young Dracula and The Basil Brush Show.Danny’s most recent radio sitcom takes creative inspiration from his own experiences as a Brit indoctrinated by his Swedish wife. It is recorded on location; with Adam Riches starring alongside a cast of Swedish comic actors, and a fifth series has been commissioned for Radio 4.In The Cold Swedish Winter, Danny mines a rich comic seam of cultural differences, exploring language, tradition and national characteristics, without resorting to cliché. The featured episode, New Swedes, also explores the country’s attitude towards immigration, a subject he explored further in the 2017 radio drama The Most Wanted Man In Sweden.Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra.

WED 06:30 Mayhem at the Ritz (b00sjrv4)
In the 1960s, demand to see the latest music sensation was so high there were insufficient British venues to meet the demand for tickets. The ABC Gaumont and Rank/Odeon cinema chains saw a money-making opportunity. Andrew Collins revisits this unique time to hear how staff coped with thousands of hysterical teenagers, and to reveal an era when health and safety issues were not a concern, but having a good time was the priority.A small but dedicated band of workers were able to switch working procedures to embrace the new era of the pop package tours. We meet chief projectionist Robert Phillpot, press-ganged into working the curtains, liaising with tour mangers and roadies while making frantic notes about lighting sequences and spotlight cues. We also find out about the 1963 Beatles tour that kicked off at The Bradford Gaumont. Manager James Whittell recalls escorting the Beatles around the cinema, pointing out the art decor. And hear how rock n' roll legend Little Richard quizzed the manager about where to go in Bradford, as the star stood abandoned outside the empty Gaumont after the show.Listen out for extracts from a rare interview The Beatles recorded backstage at the ABC Market Street, for the Huddersfield Tape Recording Society. As Beatle Historian Mark Lewisohn confirms, it still makes compelling listening.Producer: John SugarA Sugar production for BBC Radio 4

Richard Buckminster Fuller was an eccentric polymath.Perhaps best known for his innovative geodesic dome designs - a version of which feature at the Eden Project in Cornwall - he was also an inventor, a poet and a philosopher, who wrote scores of books and criss-crossed the globe giving idiosyncratic free-wheeling lectures that lasted for hours. In all of his varied work, Buckminster Fuller was dedicated to principles of sustainability, to doing 'more with less' and striving to 'make the world work for 100% of humanity'. He influenced a generation of designers and architects - including Norman Foster and Richard Rogers - and was an inspiration to the environmental movement.Buckminster Fuller was ahead of his time and his principles are arguably more relevant now than ever. He died in 1983, but he's now a largely forgotten figure. In this programme, the writer Tom Dyckhoff talks to Bucky's colleagues and commentators about what we can learn from Buckminster Fuller today. Featuring Fuller's grandson Jaime Snyder, architect Norman Foster, sculptor Antony Gormley, writers Bryan Appleyard and Alice Rawsthorn, and Andrew Simms of the New Economics Foundation.First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2013.
