SAT 01:30 Still Points, Turning Worlds (b00sj5z5)
When WH Davies wrote his celebrated poem 'Leisure' over a century ago, the myriad stimuli assaulting people's senses now and the demands that sap humanity's powers of concentration in the digital age were unimaginable. But he rightly gauged the detrimental impacts to the human spirit of failing to find moments of peace in a busy world: 'a poor life this, if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare'.In this 'composed feature', producer Alan Hall embroiders together the experiences of a range of people for whom still points and daydreaming provide an escape from the increasingly invasive nature of the turning world about us and offer a foundation for reflection, rejuvenation and creativity.Hearing from Canon Lucy Winkett of St Paul's in the heart of the City of London, an installer of 'energy pods' that offer 'corporate fatigue solutions', an hypnotherapist, staff and pupils from a school that champions 'the Pause' and Kieran MacFeely, a singer-songwriter from the world of pop music (or 'high-end racket') who sought out the peace of the countryside.'Still Points, Turning Worlds' relishes moments of reverie in an attempt to reclaim the powers of concentration.Producer: Alan HallA Falling Tree production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2010

London
Professor Christopher Clark unpicks the complex sequence of events during the July Crisis, leading to outbreak of the First World War, from the perspective of the key centres of decision-making.As events unfolded in July 1914, all eyes were on the British and how they would react. In the final programme of his series, Professor Christopher Clark analyses British decision-making during the July Crisis. At the centre of the events in London was the Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey. Of all the politicians who walked the European political stage in 1914, he was the most baffling. Professor Clark shows how the last-minute British decision to enter the war on the side of France and Russia, and to declare war on Germany, was a decision of world-historical import that transformed a local conflict into a global struggle.Christopher Clark is Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St Catharine's College. Dickie Attenborough: A Life in Film
In a career that encompassed acting, producing and directing, Richard Attenborough was a mainstay of the British film industry; in fact, for at least 20 years, he was arguably the British film industry. At the time when Attenborough began directing films, starting with Oh What a Lovely War in 1969, British film was reaching an all time nadir. Attenborough helped to bring it back from the brink.Inheriting a steadfast belief in citizenship and social responsibility, Dickie or Dick (as he was known by his friends) threw his phenomenal energy and determination into making films like Gandhi and Cry Freedom, the latter telling the story of the anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko and the journalist Donald Woods. He didn’t set out to make box office hits, yet Gandhi played for weeks at the Odeon Leicester Square and won eight Oscars including best actor for Ben Kingsley.Kingsley, Anthony Hopkins, David Puttnam, William Goldberg and the late John Mills all join in celebrating Attenborough’s skill as a director of actors, his stamina and his huge commitment to the British film industry. A year on from his death, Susan Marling (who met and recorded with Attenborough before he died) asks what his legacy has been.Producer: Isabel SuttonA Just Radio production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2015.

Jonathan Myerson - Born in the DDR
The Berlin Wall fell in November 1989. But the bricks started crumbling long before that - and were given a mighty kick by a rock 'n' roll band from New Jersey. This is the madcap and improbable true story of how the Stasi licensed a Bruce Springsteen gig in East Berlin, and started something they couldn't stop. In 1987, both Pink Floyd and David Bowie play at the Reichstag, deliberately pointing the speakers towards the East. The result is rioting on the Eastern side - Glasnost has arrived and East German youth wants some. 'Pony' Ponesky, an East German band manager (no easy job) knows something has to be done – the hard line won't work any more, they have to provide their own rock concerts. He is granted a rare luxury: a phone call to the West. And when he speaks to the promoter of Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel of Love Tour, the answer – freakishly, unbelievably, miraculously – is Yes! Who'd've guessed Bruce has always wanted to play East Berlin? MON 06:30 Tibet Remembered (b03bdbq2)
BBC Radio producer Tom Alban's godfather Charles Searle spent three months as a medical officer in the Tibetan hill fort town of Gyantse in 1940. His memories of marching across the high mountain passes into this extraordinary country were familiar to close family but it was only when the Dalai Lama spoke of the importance of what appeared to be 'colonial' memories that they took on a new life.In this programme Tom gathers the memories of the few remaining British people who visited Tibet before the arrival of the Chinese in 1950, including Dick Gould, son of Sir Basil Gould who served in Tibet and Col Alan Jenkins who travelled there in 1947.While the recollections of the Himalayan vistas and rugged high-altitude plains of the so-called 'roof of the world' are dramatic, it's the details about the food, the basic transport systems, the juxtaposition of poverty and ceremony and the friendships made with Tibetans themselves which makes this so much more than the Hollywood version of the mystic land featured in films like 'Seven years in Tibet'.Producer: Tom Alban

Are vampires real? The show was an immediate smash-hit success, causing pubs to empty on a Saturday night, which was particularly astonishing since the show went out on Thursdays. The Light Entertainment department was besieged, questions were asked in the House and Jeremy Hardy himself became known as the man responsible for the funniest show on radio since Money Box Live with Paul Lewis.Since that fateful first series, Jeremy went on to win Sony Awards, Writers Guild nominations and a Nobel Prize for Chemistry. He was a much-loved regular on both The News Quiz and I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.Written by Jeremy HardyProduced by David TylerA Pozzitive production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2014. .

THU 06:30 Bandits of the Blitz (b00tmtj8)
With Britain at war and London under siege from the Luftwaffe, everyone's pulling together. Or are they? Whilst bombs rained down and long-suffering Brits helped each other, some people were simply helping themselves - stealing, looting, and making money on the black market. The Second World War created vast opportunities for crime. Warehouses were robbed, army stores rifled and forgers kept busy providing false identity documents, ration books and clothing coupons. Looters, stealing anything of value, cleaned out blitzed houses. The blackout and bombing provided perfect cover for safe cracking and Post Office raids. Professional criminals thrived. People like Billy Hill, who despite prison terms used his wartime muscle to become, in his words, "Boss of Britain's Underworld".Complex emergency rules left normally-law-abiding citizens facing the courts. Shopkeepers who fell foul of the tangle of red tape faced heavy fines.Even as the war ended, rationing continued, and the black market flourished. Presenter Duncan Campbell unearths once-secret papers that put Billy Hill at the centre of London's organized crime in the 1950s.Using archive accounts and talking to people who were there, Campbell tells the tale of crime on the home front. With interviews from Billy Hill's son, Justin Hill, former jewel thief Peter Scott, veteran ex police officers, and historians and academics.Presenter Duncan Campbell is a former crime correspondent for the Guardian.Producer: Liz CarneyA Juniper production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2010.

William Robinson
Gardener Carol Klein's great life is a Victorian hero of the wild garden, the writer and horticulturalist William Robinson. Matthew Parris presents, with expert help from Robinson's biographer Richard Bisgrove and reader Stephen Hogan.William Robinson was a radical and persuasive writer and designer whose influence on British gardens has been compared to that of William Morris on interiors. You may not recognise his name but his influence lives on: 'we are all Robinsonians now, even if we don't know it', according to one recent review. Born in 1838 in Ireland, he started young as a garden boy for the Marquess of Waterford. Little more is known about Robinson's early life, but his rise to prominence was swift once he'd arrived in London. Within a few years he'd been elected as a fellow to the Linnaean Society, sponsored by Charles Darwin and James Veitch. He founded, wrote and published his own gardening periodicals and almanacs as well as writing best-selling books on gardening which struck a chord with the newly wealthy English middle classes who were beginning to build their own gardens in the suburbs around London.Carol Klein is the garden expert and star of Gardener's World, who started life as an art teacher. Her gardening hobby became a successful career, with a trugful of gold medals from RHS shows and many best selling books on gardening, as well as her own TV series, most recently 'Life in a Cottage Garden'. She shares Robinson's passion and what she calls his 'empathy' for plants, too, making the best of their individual features, whatever they may be. Producer...Mary Ward-Lowery

Terry Waite
Born in 1939, he remembers the constraints of being the son of the local policeman, where any misdemeanour from a young Terry came under scrutiny. His father Thomas, a highly principled man, was also a disciplinarian, leading to an ambivalent relationship between father and son. His mother Lena worked hard to keep the family fed, especially at a time of post war rationing. Terry's parents used their large garden to sustain meal times and even sold fruit and vegetables to supplement a policeman's wage.As a child, Terry failed his 11-plus and left school at 16. Being a loner and finding village life too confined, Terry was eager to see more of the world and applied to join the navy, but he was persuaded by his father to stay at home and continue his education through evening classes and college. The Church of England played a big role in his life. As a boy he sang in the church choir and even learnt large parts of the prayer book by heart and it was the rituals, language and music of his faith which he says nourished and sustained him while in captivity.Terry Waite takes Wendy Robbins back to the home and haunts of his childhood.First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2011.
