SAT 01:30 Robin Hood and the Cuban Revolutionaries (b00n3mq4)
Errol Flynn was cinema's brightest Hollywood star, with a series of unforgettable swashbuckling epics to his name. However, Flynn spent his last year with girlfriend Beverley Aadland on the island of Cuba, mixing with Castro, Che Guevara and the Cuban rebels. We hear about the pair's two-year relationship and their time together in Cuba.Errol's daughter Rory Flynn saw Beverley as a positive force in her father's life and key in their final adventure to Cuba in 1958. Flynn secured a commission from Hearst newspapers to file reports and secure an interview with Castro. The programme explores these articles filed by Flynn - many which have lain unseen in a Texan archive for 50 years. On his return from the mountains, Flynn set about capturing his adventures on film and secured the funds to star alongside Beverley in "Cuban Rebel Girls". The film disappeared without trace, but Flynn set about recording the events of the revolution with producer Victor Pahlen, and their documentary film "Cuban Story" was the result. Hear clips from both of these films in this programme.Fifty years after his passing, Errol Flynn is famous for his epic films, womanising, and hard-living lifestyle. However, his strange venture into the world of Cuban politics and flirtation with the flowering of Castro's brand of communism is as an untold story. SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 (b05wnb7g)
The Tokens and the Foundlings
Drawing on an archive of personal testimonies from some of the last foundlings, Caro Howell, Director of the Foundling Museum presents the extraordinary story of the UK's first children's charity; the Foundling Hospital (now CORAM).The streets of London in the 1720s presented startling contrasts of wealth and poverty, respectability and debauchery, extravagance and utter destitution. Poverty and disgrace resulted in huge number of babies being abandoned. So shocked was he by this situation, that Thomas Coram, a former shipbuilder began a one-man campaign which led 17 years later to the establishment of a "Hospital for the Maintenance and Education of Exposed and Deserted Young Children" which became known as the Foundling Hospital.Philanthropic acts by artists including Hogarth, Gainsborough, Reynolds and also Handel, not only raised funds for the hospital but transformed it into a fashionable place for art and music, including the first performance of Handel's Messiah. For the 25,000 children who were accepted (until its role changed in 1953), it was a place of 'maintenance and education'.Today, some of the original hospital furniture, artworks and staircases, have been rehoused in what is now the Foundling Museum, which stands on the same site. The Museum also hosts archive documents and tokens; objects like buttons and coins left by the mothers as a unique means of identification should they ever be able to return at a later date when their fortunes had changed and reclaim their children.Using personal accounts from 'Coram's children' Archive on 4 tells the astonishing and moving story of the Foundling Hospital and its legacy.Producer: Sarah BluntFirst broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2015.

Tennyson's Ulysses Revisited
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive selecting Tennyson’s Ulysses Revisited. The poem starts with the Greek hero on the shores of Ithaca, justifying his reasons for leaving his faithful wife Penelope once more, to set off and travel again. It ends with the famously rousing lines "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield". 2009 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Tennyson and Sean O'Brien set out on his own journey to learn more about the poem and its enduring appeal. He hears from Homer scholar Oliver Taplin and Dante scholar Martin McLaughlin about Tennyson's sources for the poem and its surprisingly ambiguous hero, and then learns from Victorian experts Seamus Perry, Robert Douglas Fairhurst and Linda Hughes about the tragedy in Tennyson's young life that led him to write this poem about an old man when he himself was just 24. This is a poem about bereavement and death but, as the poet Vicki Feaver explains, it is also about the personal struggle in each of us between comfort and adventure, between the familiar and the unknown, between accepting life as it is and striving ever onward.Anton Lesser provides a powerful new reading of Ulysses. Waterton
Squire Waterton of Walton Hall was an eccentric Englishman and gentleman who made many visits to South America and wrote about his travels. His travel books are "amongst the oddest I know" David Attenborough tells us, written in an odd, almost biblical style. But nevertheless, these books are accounts of natural history two hundred years ago. Attenborough argues that Waterton shouldn't be just remembered for his writing. He should be credited with establishing the first nature reserve in this country.Appalled by the ravages of the industrial revolution's impact on the landscape, he built a wall around his estate to protect the wildlife - and free of charge allowed people to visit, which they did in their masses.Written and presented by David AttenboroughProducer: Julian Hector.First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2011.

MON 06:30 Composing New York (b00t1zc7)
New York City has always drawn composers from the Old World - from Dvorak and Mahler to Kurt Weill, Rachmaninov and Benjamin Britten. Some, like Puccini, crossed the Atlantic to premier new works, others like Gustav Mahler and Bela Bartok stayed for longer periods to compose, study and conduct. But all were shaped by the energy of New York, just as the city's musical culture was shaped, in turn, by them.Behind this extraordinary cultural exchange lay a deeper question: what should a truly American "classical" music sound like? Did it lie outside the concert hall and with the Broadway musical, as envisaged by Kurt Weill? Or was it Dvorak's iconic New World symphony, with its powerful invocations of the black American spiritual, that pointed the way?Filled with the sounds of NYC, British composer and New York resident Tarik O'Regan presents a vivid portrait of the city which electrified these great composers and, through their works composed and premiered in New York, transformed the wider world of classical music.Producer: Simon HollisA Brook Lapping production for BBC Radio 4.

How is our life-experience affected by how we look? When Erin was growing up she was convinced she was ugly. She would dart across the road diagonally so she wouldn't draw attention to her nose by crossing in front of stationary cars. She was so self-conscious about her flat-chest that she would regularly wear two padded bras. But one day she was told she was beautiful, scooped up by the modelling industry and presented as the uber-elegant catwalk queen, sought after and richly rewarded. What did they see in her that she would never have seen in herself? Beauty? With the help of renowned facial-reconstructive surgeon Professor Iain Hutchison, who has treated people with severe facial disfigurement; and Professor of Children's Literature, Kim Reynolds who has studied the way beauty is regarded in traditional stories, Erin explores various opinions and experiences of beauty.Erin also goes behind the scenes at London Fashion Week, to an event called 'All Walks Beyond the Catwalk'; it used a wide range of models - both in size and age - as a way to broaden the range of catwalk models used at such influential events.

He becomes increasingly horrified by humankind, stranded in a frightening land where his only ally is an innocent child. Once again, escape is imperative - if he doesn't, he won't survive...As an exploration of of man's vanity and complacency, Gulliver's second voyage is an acute satire - as relevant today as ever. I've grown up watching my parents settle into life in the UK, and as a second generation British Asian I've grown up living between two cultures - overall it's been a rich and fulfilling experience for me. However, whenever I return to India I feel at times more 'English' than 'Indian'. I get frustrated with the pushing, the shoving and the constant peeping of horns. If I struggle when I'm on holiday here, what about those people who've chosen to make India their home, particularly if they're white?Heather Chathley was a trainee nurse, he was a trainee Indian Doctor and they both met while at the Royal Victoria hospital in Belfast. When Heather went for her first holiday to India she ended up marrying her Doctor, and since 1979 the city of Moga in the Punjab has been home. For Nancy Joyce Margaret Jones her life in India spans almost 70 years - pre Indepependence and partition with a planned wedding blessing from Mahatma Gandhi, Nancy Rajni Kumar tells how India "caught her in its web".She was working in the financial sector and he was Banker - that's how Christine Pemberton met her husband in the 1980s. Now living in Delhi - a City which she says is at times not an easy place to live in - it has become her "forever home".However, for Lindsay Singh - who has been in India for over thirteen years, she and her Indian husband have decided to see if they can now start a new life in the UK - but with her changed values and attitudes Lindsay's now not sure where they'll end up.These are 'The Blonde Women of India'.Producer/Presenter: Perminder Khatkar.

FRI 06:30 I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down (b038c0f4)
Every comedian, however famous or successful, has memories of stand-up shows which didn't go to plan. Many comics will agree that 'dying' on stage is a rite of passage from which a lot can be learned - and swapping stories of on-stage humiliation can bind comedians together. Rich Morton has performed with most of Britain's best loved stand-ups down the years, and in this programme he gets some of them to confess their memories of the nightmare gigs they'd rather forget.Realising too late that your material is completely inappropriate for the audience, finding the crowd was expecting someone else, having to deal with the heckler from hell - whatever the situation, most comics have been there, and have emerged from the experience with some hilarious stories to tell.Jo Brand, Tim Clark, Jack Dee, Mike Gunn, Milton Jones, Lucy Porter and Ian Stone share their recollections.Producer: Paul BajoriaFirst broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2013.

FRI 07:30 Rumblings from the Rafters (b07h65c6)
Death Watch Beetle and Queen Wasp
A Death Watch Beetle, played by Bill Paterson, and a bossy Queen wasp played, by Alison Steadman, reveal the truth about life in a draughty old attic in a house in Amersham in the first of three very funny tales, written and introduced by Lynne Truss, with additional sound recordings by Chris Watson. The Death Watch Beetle is a wood-boring beetle. Having spent twelve years as a larva boring through a single rafter in the house with no one to talk to, our beetle is now an adult with about 5 weeks left to live. He has just three aims in life. Firstly, to find a mate, which he does by banging his head on the timber "Oh Come on girls, .. I know you're out there ... Don't tell me this attic has ever seen such a specimen before. This lovely compact dark brown capsule of hard cuticle covered with yellowish scale-like hair and just under a centimetre long - it could all be yours! Secondly, to make as much noise as he can and finally to live long enough to see the roof cave in.The Queen Wasp is very, very bossy, and very, very stressed. She carries the entire responsibility for the wasp colony and its thousands of inhabitants, all of whom are her own progeny. There is an enormous amount of work to be done. "They call themselves workers, these girls, but quite frankly, none of them knows what real work actually is." It is lonely at the top too," I did consider leaving all this, at one point. None of them knows this; they'd be heartbroken to think I might have left them" and she is just beginning to lose her grip. "Bring me my list" she constantly yells. Life doesn't get much more stressful than this.Death Watch Beetle: Bill PatersonDragonfly: Alison SteadmanWritten and introduced by Lynne TrussWildlife sound recordings Chris WatsonProducer Sarah Blunt.

Better the Devil You Know
Simon McGrath is a generally nice chap who just happens to be an arms dealer. It's not something he planned, he just fell into it, and despite all his best intentions he just doesn't seem to be able to leave because he has to pay his mortgage like everyone else. Of course his real love is electronic music and this is just a stop gap until he finds the perfect outlet for his music - okay so the gap has lasted five years but that's not the point. Once he can get himself motivated he'll be out of there and, as his ever supportive mum says, people will always want to kill each other. So that's alright then. This series sees Simon going to some bizarre lengths to excuse his profession: his attempt at gaining redundancy when an American firm puts in a takeover bid somehow winds up with his promotion; he desperately attempts to give himself compassion fatigue so he won't have to feel guilty about all the bloodshed in the world; he unsuccessfully tries to seek forgiveness and he finally tries to self-motivate himself to sit down in front of a keyboard to compose his electronic masterpiece. His personal life is as unsatisfactory as his work life and not only do he and Anna have to try and find reasons why they love each other but they have to survive a visit from her parents and his mum's new job at Heathcote Sanders and, as Judith eloquently puts it, to have one member of the family working in the arms trade may be regarded as misfortune, to have two looks like genetic wickedness.Simon McGrath ......
