Roald Dahl: Served with a Twist
The Butler
Charles Dance leads the cast as the urbane Storyteller in dramatisations of five classic tales by Roald Dahl. Bizarre and amusing by turns, these dark comedies are justly famous for their surprise endings, and for their rogues gallery of crooks, cheats and schemers. The stories show Dahl at the height of his powers as a writer of adult fiction, combining black comedy with sly social satire. They are stylishly plotted, vividly characterised and made unforgettable by their breezy cynicism, presenting a hilariously bleak view of human nature. In The Butler, we meet George Cleaver, the Sausage King of the North, who sells his business and moves to London in order to enter society. He employs a butler, Tibbs, to help him to do this. Tibbs explains that it’s vital Cleaver learns as much as he can about fine wines - and, to this end, Tibbs sets about buying rare and expensive vintages and educating his employer. Before long, Cleaver feels he no longer needs his butler’s advice.Cast:Storyteller………..Charles DanceGeorge Cleaver….Geoffrey WhiteheadMrs Cleaver……...Sarah BadelTibbs……………..Nickolas GraceLord Dungeness….Nicholas BoultonWritten by Roald DahlDramatised by Stephen SheridanDirector: David BlountA Pier production for BBC Radio 4

SAT 01:30 Tim Key's Easy USSR (b03h30gb)
"I remember exactly where I was when I was first exposed to Vyacheslav Mescherin's tunes. I was at a dinner party and the host handed me the sleeve with a glint in her eye. She thought I might quite like it. The insinuation was that none of the other guests would. She was right."Nine years ago, comedian and poet Tim Key was given a copy of a CD entitled Easy USSR Vol. 2. One car journey to Devon and four consecutive listens later, and he was hooked. The strange yet catchy sounds of Vyacheslav Mescherin's Ensemble of Electronic Musical Instruments have underscored his life and his work ever since. On stage and on the radio, Mescherin's music lies beneath him like a crashmat. With very little information available about Mescherin, Tim sets out to find out more about the man.His search takes him from one of the world's leading Theremin players to a Soviet Cosmonaut. Tim discovers that, far from the obscure rarity it is today, in the 1960s and beyond Mescherin's music was a quirky soundtrack to life in the Soviet Union - on radio, TV and even in factories. The futuristic sounds of the electronic instruments he pioneered provided the perfect accompaniment to the space race era. Nearly twenty years after his death, many Russians can hum Mescherin's tunes, yet few know his name. But what of the rumours that Mescherin's sounds were blasted into space? And will Tim be able to find more of the music he craves?Producer: Peggy SuttonA Somethin' Else production for BBC Radio 4

Big Country's Driving to Damascus
Stuart Maconie presents Swansong Ep 3 this week looking at Big Country's 1999 album Driving To Damascus.Big Country were one of the most successful acts of the 1980's - with a dual guitar sound that's been likened to Thin Lizzy in Kilts- their epic Celtic anthems ontracks like 'Fields of Fire' and 'In A Big Country' sold millions both in the UK and the States. Singer and guitarist Stuart Adamson had previously tasted the limelight with his post-punk outfit The Skids - but it was the mainstream success of Big Country with their uniquely Scottish sound and lyrics emphasizing the plight of the working man that heralded their worldwide fame and to Adamson brought its associated troubles. In summer 1999 the band entered Rockfield Studios in Monmouth to record Driving To Damascus - it would be their last full album with Adamson. Swansong Ep 3 features honest and revealing interviews with guitarist, Bruce Watson, drummer Mark Brzezicki, album's producer Rafe Mckenna, Eddi Reader and Stuart's daughter Kirsten Adamson who then aged 14 sang backing vocals on the album.

SAT 09:00 Joe Queenan: My Years of Awe and Wonder (b07wxpqh)
John Sergeant introduces two decades of adventures in broadcasting with the best reviewed American on BBC radio - Joe Queenan. From his early days presenting Postcard from Gotham through to Wonderful Ways to Make a Living, A Brief History of Irony and Hitler's Favourite Cowboy, Joe Queenan has always shown a delight in his interviewees. "Most journalists don't like people but I'm the complete opposite of that. For the brief moment that we meet, they become almost like friends. I remember all of them still."You'll hear uncut and previously unbroadcast extended interviews, unsliced and undiced, with Ian Hislop, Germaine Greer, Kathy Lette and Armando Iannucci. John Sergeant reveals what it's like to be rung up and asked to give short, snappy thoughts on abstract subjects such as cunning, failure and blame. And then there's Queenan's unexpected and deep love of Britain (he is married to a woman from Stroud), plus his ongoing amazement that a poor boy from Philadelphia has been given the opportunity to work for the BBC: letters, he says, "that do resonate in America still"."It's worth remembering that when you're doing these kinds of programmes, they become a part of your life. For four days that's all you're doing. But it's not a job. It's some sort of special adventure. You're meeting unusual people. You're in unusual places. You're doing an unusual thing, asking complete strangers bizarre questions that they hadn't expected you to ask. "Produced in Bristol by Miles Warde. Made for BBC Radio Extra 4 and first broadcast in 2016.

SAT 14:15 Frankly Speaking (b055q3p1)
Maurice Chevalier
French entertainer Maurice Chevalier is interviewed about his life and career by Penelope Mortimer, Colin MacInnes and Carl Wildman.Sadly the full programme from 1963 no longer exists, but this is a long extract. Then in his 70s, he speaks openly about how much he owes to English vaudeville and music hall. Chevalier reveals his use of the then new-fangled stage microphone, touches on his working class roots, his adored mother and two bouts of depression. He's also questioned about his stage persona as the sophisticated, romantic, Frenchman versus the real Chevalier. Launched in 1952 on the BBC Home Service, Frankly Speaking was a novel, ground breaking series. Unrehearsed and unscripted, the traditional interviewee/interviewer pairing was initially jettisoned for three interviewers firing direct questions - straight to the point. Early critics described it as 'unkempt', 'an inquisition' and described the guest as prey being cornered, quarry being pursued - with calls to axe the unscripted interview. But the format won out and eventually won over its detractors.Unknown or very inexperienced broadcasters were employed as interviewers, notably John Freeman, John Betjeman, Malcolm Muggeridge, Harold Hobson, Penelope Mortimer, Elizabeth Beresford and Katherine Whitehorn. Only about 40 of the original 100 programmes survive. First broadcast on the BBC Home Service in 1963.

David Attenborough, a huge fan of palaeontology, is skilled in bringing the past natural histories to life through stories about the discovery of key fossils. What a creature this "terrible lizard" must have been - big enough to scavenge the bodies of dead Tyrannosaurus and yet able to fly, probably in large numbers. And with a twist so typical of Sir David's writing, he brings this pterosaur to life at the very end. Written and presented by David Attenborough Produced by Julian Hector.

The Fisher Poets Gathering
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive selecting The Fisher Poets Gathering in which Katrina Porteous visits Astoria, Oregon, where each February commercial fishermen and women gather for a festival of poems, songs and stories they've written about their lives. Fisher poets come from all over America - Florida, Maine, Chesapeake Bay, Alaska. These tough characters, who all know someone who has drowned, stand up and read their poems. Hundreds listen: there are sessions in bars and readings all over town. There are workshops, exhibitions, and the community radio station broadcasts proceedings, live.In 2014, a poet came from beyond the United States. Katrina Porteous lives in the Northumbrian fishing village of Beadnell. For years she has worked with, recorded and written about her local fishing people. She hears astonishing work from Dave Densmore, on his boat Cold Stream; from Moe Bowstern, an extraordinarily prolific writer about the lives of fisher women; from Richard King who fishes in Alaska, and farms in Hawaii. She meets, too, Lloyd Montgomery, an Aleut fisher poet. And wherever they are from, Katrina discovers, fisher poets share concerns over sustainability - of fish stocks, their communities, their way of life.Producer: Julian MayFirst broadcast on Radio 4 in 2014.

For the Records

Among the many targets in their sights are the Care Quality Commission, patient records, privatisation, whistleblowing, time wasters and patient participation groups. Will the NHS be safe in the hands of Pfizer? Why do doctors often look sicker than their patients? Would an NHS executive go private? How are doctors revalidated? What does that actually mean? And is that piece of dry skin on your heel anything to do with the amount you've been drinking lately? These and other questions may well be answered at Polyoaks - the flagship of enlightened West Country General Practice at the forefront of a constantly reforming NHS.Nigel Planer stars as Dr Roy Thornton and Simon Greenall as his brother Dr Hugh Thornton in a clinic always at odds with itself over diagnoses, funding, clinical commissioning groups, Jeremy Hunt and the ever more dubious commercial activities of their associate TV's Dr. Jeremy (David Westhead), who is still juggling Dictionary Corner, a series of Malpractice suits and forgotten alimony payments.Episode 2:For the Records. Cupboard
Third series of the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous. Written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery. Stars Rebecca Front, John Hannah, Sue Johnston, Paul Kaye and Johnny Vegas. Love in Recovery follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Johnny Vegas is Andy, the sweet but simple self-appointed group leader. Sue Johnston plays straight talking Julie, who's been known to have the odd relapse here and there - and everywhere. Rebecca Front is the snobby and spiky Fiona, an ex-banker who had it all and then lost the lot. John Hannah is Simon, a snide journalist who’s not an alcoholic – he got caught drink driving, his boss made him attend the meeting, but he fell in love with Fiona and stayed. And, despite her best efforts, she fell in love with him too. Paul Kaye is Danno, a down and out two-bit chancer with a shady past but a lot of heart, who’s desperate to turn his life around. As we follow their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and, most importantly, tell their stories. In episode three, Andy is convinced that everyone’s forgotten his birthday - just like every other year. What he doesn't know is that Simon and Danno are hiding in the cupboard with a cake. But finding an appropriate time to burst out cheering proves difficult when Julie comes in with a dark secret she wants to reveal.Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.Cast:Fiona….. Angela now does the very same thing, nominating objects that she would choose to send on with her as mementoes of her life, and asking the audience to share items they would take with them, all acting as prompts for contemplative, heart-warming and captivating comedy.Angela Barnes is a vivacious, critically acclaimed stand-up comic from Maidstone, Kent. After a career in health and social care, at the age of 33, she decided to pursue a long-held ambition and give comedy a go. Within a couple of years, Angela and her witty worldview had won the 2011 BBC New Comedy Award by a public vote, secured a weekly star slot in Channel 4's Stand Up For The Week and appeared on numerous radio and television shows including Loose Ends, The Now Show, The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4), Russell Howard's Good News (BBC 3), and Mock The Week and Live at the Apollo (BBC 2). THU 06:30 Lowry Revisited (b02yk9fj)
Few artists have divided opinion as strongly as Laurence Stephen Lowry. He's loved by millions of the general public, but many among the art establishment have accused him of amateurism - a 'Sunday Painter', extremely limited in the scope of his artistic ambition. In the past, Lowry fans have accused the Tate of failing to adequately represent him on their gallery walls because of a Metropolitan and anti-Northern bias. Now though, The Tate is set to launch the biggest Lowry exhibition since his death in 1976. The curators argue that, for too long, the north/south argument and the endless debate over whether he was too sentimental has overshadowed a fuller appreciation of the L S Lowry's worth - which comes through recognition of his connections with other traditions, particularly those from France.Michael Symmons Roberts grew up in Manchester with Lowry paintings on the wall and he sets out to explore whether it is possible to get a fresh perspective on this most troublesome figure, questioning whether northerners themselves have stood in the way of fuller recognition of Lowry's qualities through being too defensive, too chippy over his legacy. Along the way Michael meets people who knew the artist well, and who worked alongside him in documenting the north-west landscape. He asks the current crop of metropolitan art critics how they feel about the Tate being taken over by the rent collector from the north, and also talks to the curators of the exhibition about their desire to get past the old arguments and concentrate on what they regard as the outstanding quality of the artwork itself.Producer: Geoff BirdA Sparklab production for BBC Radio 4.

They have Jack in the Green day, where everyone paints themselves green and gets drunk. Fame
iGOD is a highly original and funny new late-night comedy series for Radio 4. It stars Simon Day (The Fast Show) and David Soul (Starsky & Hutch) and is written by one of the head writers of the BAFTA award-winning The Thick Of It, Sean Gray and produced by Simon Nicholls (Ed Reardon's Week / News At Bedtime). We all worry about the end of the world, as economists and environmentalists speak in apocalyptic terms everyday. iGOD says that trying to predict the end of the world is as pointless as moisturising an elephant's elbow. In each episode, an unnamed, all-seeing narrator (David Soul - Starsky and Hutch) shows us that it is stupid to be worrying, as he looks back at some of the most entertaining apocalypses on parallel Earths. Each week our case study is a normal bloke called Ian (Simon Day) who manages to accidentally initiate the apocalypse of a different parallel world through a seemingly harmless single act (telling a lie, being lazy, cooking some lambshanks). A succession of comic vignettes ensue that escalate to the end of a parallel world. With a full-range of sound effects and wonderfully funny and surreal twists, iGOD will be a true aural extravaganza.Written bySEAN GRAYProduced bySIMON NICHOLLS.
