SAT 01:30 Composing LA (b01m0lv4)
Young British Composer Tarik O' Regan tells the story of how the tradition of Western classical music, its composers and maestros, underpinned the golden age of Hollywood film score.
More or less the entire Hollywood music scene, as it blossomed in the 1930s, looked to serious European and Russian composers for film score composition. Stravinsky, Schoenberg, two of the greatest composers of 'serious' 20th century music, both lived and worked in LA - much to the consternation of the European classical music establishment.
Many composers on the run from Europe in the 1930s would arrive in New York and, failing to make inroads into the concert scene or Broadway (as Kurt Weil had done), continued their journey West. Even as early cinema flourished, America was still struggling to find its own authentic 'classical' music - one that strived to be equal to the European symphonic sound but that had its own voice too. The film score was precisely that.
Meanwhile most of the Hollywood film orchestras were filled with British and European émigré musicians who taught American musicians the European symphonic style that became the hallmark of Hollywood film music. This programme also explores how some of the most successful soundtrack composers today - John Williams and others - are completely caught up in that sound-world.
Presented by Tarik O'Regan, an émigré composer himself who moved to the US, with contributors including Andre Previn, Larry Schoenberg, conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen and music writer Alex Ross.
Produced by Simon Hollis

Captive Media: The Story of Patty Hearst
On 17 May 1974, in the district of Compton in Los Angeles, American network television broadcast live the longest gunfight in the nation's history, in a scene worthy of the studios of nearby Hollywood.
It marked the beginning of the end for the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), a leftist guerrilla group that sprang to fame three months earlier after kidnapping heiress Patricia Hearst, granddaughter of the newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst.
This saga - described as "probably the mystery story of the 20th Century" - is one of the most bizarre episodes of recent American history. Within hours of Patty's kidnapping the media arrived outside the Hearst mansion, where they would camp out in a self-styled 'press city'. Communiqués issued by the SLA on cassette tapes, often spoken by Patty herself, were broadcast in full. The family posted a sign that read 'Please don't feed reporters'.
After 57 days in captivity, sympathy for the captive heiress turned to shock as she declared herself a member of the SLA, denounced her family and was pictured wielding a gun as the gang robbed a bank in San Francisco. 18 months later Patty was arrested, and convicted in what the press called 'The Trial of the Century'.
Four decades on, Benjamin Ramm explores how this sensational story was driven by exhaustive daily media coverage. He asks to what extent it changed the way news was reported and anticipated many of today's debates about the ethics and appetites of rolling news.
Interviewees include Linda Deutsch, renowned court reporter; John Lester, a news anchor who became the Hearst family spokesman; Bill Deiz, who reported the LA shootout using new camera technology; and former member of the SLA, Mike Bortin.
Produced by Rebecca Maxted.

Stephen Fry traces the evolution of the mobile phone, from hefty executive bricks that required a separate briefcase to carry the battery to the smart little devices complete with personal assistant we have today.
There are more mobile phones in the world than there are people on the planet: Stephen Fry talks to the backroom boys who made it all possible and hears how the technology succeeded, in ways that the geeks had not necessarily intended.
In the fourth episode, Stephen Fry talk to the engineers who turned mobile phones from hefty executive bricks into svelte fashion accessories. One man at Motorola dreamt of a mobile phone small enough to fit in a shirt pocket but it was Nokia , once more famous for making loo paper and wellies, that cornered the global market. In the early nineties, Nokia was on the brink of collapse. But the new chief executive, brought in to save the company from bankruptcy, made a bold decision to ditch the wellies and focus solely on mobile phones. Soon the iconic Nokia ringtone (extracted incidentally from a piece for classical guitar composed in 1902) was inescapable.

For years Bill Dare wanted to create a satire about different worlds exploring Kipling's idea that we travel, 'not just to explore civilizations, but to better understand our own'. But science fiction and space ships never interested him, so he put the idea on ice. Then Brian Gulliver arrived and meant that our hero could be lost in a fictional world without the need for any sci-fi.
Gulliver's Travels is the only book Bill Dare read at university. His father, Peter Jones, narrated a similarly peripatetic radio series: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The Nazis threw immense resources behind the German team for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, while the British Foreign Office still thought sport should be, ' a private affair between private individuals' free of government interference. However by the 1950's post war politicians began to think that physical recreation and games might be a cure for the general apathy and discontent of British youth as exemplified by the teddy boys, mods and rockers of the era.

MON 22:30 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (b0076s5b)
Quintessential Phase, Fit the Twenty-Fourth
Arthur's search for guidance and advice on the Planet Hawalius leads him to memorable encounters with The Smelly Photocopier Woman - an extravagantly flatulent Hawalian soothsayer - and The Old Man On The Pole, who squats hundreds of feet up in the air on a series of tall sticks, swooshing about from one to the other nonchalantly. This is (a) off-putting and (b) irritating, and as the consensus of opinion among all the prophets and soothsayers seems to be that Arthur should go elsewhere and do something constructive with his life, he resolves to move on, catching a shuttle off the planet. His listlessness is not helped by his bereavement at the loss of his girlfriend Fenchurch, and his copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy is proving not much use at all, except maybe for eating his sandwiches off, because some strange female voice keeps interrupting its normally urbane sophisticate presence, advertising a 'Guide Mark II', which is 'Coming Soon'.
Ford Prefect is in a position to help Arthur understand better what is happening to the Guide, but inconveniently he is thousands of light years away, having sneaked into the new Hitchhiker's Guide Building on Saquo-Pilia Hensha, with the help of a reprogrammed security robot called Colin. Ford has entered the office of the Editor of the Guide to discover that there's been a change at the top and the post is now occupied by a vaguely familiar and definitely sinister new Editor named Zarniwoop Van Harl. Zarniwoop explains that the Megadodo Corporation is now as defunct as a - um - Dodo, and some shadowy corporation called Infinidim Enterprises has taken over the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Their brainchild, the Guide Mark II, is a complete redesign of the Hitchhiker's Guide. Instead of selling to penniless hitchhikers, the product will be aimed at businessmen and their wives, people with lots of income and a predisposition to dispose it on gadgetry, the purpose of which may be much more than they imagine.
Zarniwoop further explains that whereas the business once relied on selling lots of old Guides to billions of people, the new plan depends on selling One Guide many many times to billions and billions of people. This is possible because the new Guide has been built to operate transdimensionally, available anywhere at any time across the layers of the multiverse. And instead of the voice of a plummy pompous pedagogue lecturing to penniless hitchhikers, it boasts a sultry Brantisvogan Escort Agency VIP vamp voice.
Ford is not over-impressed at this development but significantly more impressed - one might even say gobsmacked - when Zarniwoop presents him with a Dine-O-Charge card in his name. Zarniwoop wants Ford to be the Guide's new restaurant critic. If the Quota Permits. Unfortunately the use of the word quota has the same effect on Ford as it has throughout the ages on all free thinking independent spirits in the Galaxy who sense fences being put up to protect Corporate Mediocrity, and without thinking he orders Colin to kill Zarniwoop. Rhetorically of course. The upshot is that Zarniwoop is rendered unconscious before Ford can reverse the order. However as a result Ford (naturally) looks through Zarniwoop's pockets and finds an Ident-i-Eze card which is going to prove VERY useful in gaining access to the Hitchhiker's Guide Accounting computer, where he can clear his more reckless expense claims once and for all.
On the new Earth where Arthur Dent met and loved the disappeared Fenchurch, television reporter Tricia MacMillan lives in complete ignorance that a parallel, less blonde, more British version of herself called Trillian roams the Galaxy, once as a girlfriend of Zaphod Beeblebrox, now as a reporter for the Siderial Daily Mentioner. Tricia has longed to travel in space ever since she failed to get off with Zaphod Beeblebrox at a party, and when a party of aliens land their ship on her lawn and ask if she will go with them to the Planet Rupert and help calculate their astrological forecasts using her astrophysical expertise, she readily accepts.
Arthur Dent meanwhile is in a shuttle which fails to make a hyperspace jump at the Lamuella Nexus. It plunges towards the nearest planet and certain doom, with Arthur hoping very hard that the planet is NOT called Stavromula Beta, the location where the unhinged reincarnated creature called Agrajag more or less predicted he would die (see Tertiary Phase Episode 4, Fit The Sixteenth).
Back in the Hitchhiker's Guide Building, Ford enters the Virtual Reality computer-generated Universe that once existed only in an upstairs office for Zarniwoop's sole use, but now has spread through an entire basement level. Here it is, among staggeringly realistic computer-generated lofty mountains and distant seas, from rocky crags to lonely huts on beaches, that the Guide's accounts are manipulated using a three-dimensional ecosynthetic multidimensional interface. Having used Zarniwoop's Ident-i-Eze card to clear all

TUE 06:30 In Search of Richard Yates (b01n6sj8)
Nick Fraser argues that the work of Richard Yates should receive greater recognition. Yates is best known for his first novel, the remarkable Revolutionary Road, which was published to great acclaim in 1961. However, his subsequent books failed to gain the same readership and Yates slowly faded from view. By the time of his death in 1992 he was largely forgotten.
Friends, family and biographer Blake Bailey reveal the stark beauty of his prose, the heart-breaking complexity of his characters, and how his own struggles with alcohol and mental illness informed his work.
Fraser seeks to uncover the mystery of Richard Yates and examine how a a writer so well-respected, loved by his peers, capable of moving his readers so deeply, fell so quickly out of print. He explores the reasons why his work has, in recent years, enjoyed a revival and why his stories sit nicely alongside the public's affection for programmes such as Mad Men.
Producers: Jessica Treen and Stephen Garner.

Series 2, Home on the Range
Lach was the King of Manhattan's East Village and host of the longest running open mic night in New York. He now lives in Scotland and finds himself back at square one, playing in a dive bar on the wrong side of Edinburgh.
His eccentric night, held in various venues around New York, was called the Antihoot. Never quite fitting in and lost somewhere lonely between folk and punk music, Lach started the Antifolk movement. He played host to Suzanne Vega, Jeff Buckley and many others. He discovered and nurtured lots of talent including Beck, Regina Spektor and the Moldy Peaches - but nobody discovered him.
In this episode, Lach recalls the genesis of his career and - ultimately - his independent life. Always an outsider, his young rejection of aspiration and fledgling discoveries of Messrs Bruce and Bob led Lach to a salvation he still holds dear.

Clare Balding explores why Rugby Union tried to stand firm against the encroaching tide of professionalism and in August 1995, lost.
One by one the old bastions of the sporting gentleman had fallen in the 1960s and 1970s. Cricket, tennis and athletics had all abandoned the Victorian distinction between amateurs and professionals. The word 'amateur' had almost become an insult. But of all the major sports, only one continued to uphold the banner - rugby union. It had introduced strict amateur rules into the game in 1886 and ever since had been determined to uphold them. Prof Tony Collins explains that when the Thatcher era did away with the old school tie mentality and money became an acceptable topic of conversation there was only one way rugby could go.

2/6: Tempting Fete. In this second episode of the series, Lucy borrows Kat's guitar and finds that this machine irritates aliens. Meanwhile tempers are fraught as preparations are made for the annual village fete, and Richard receives some surprising news from The Computer.
Welcome To Our Village, Please Invade Carefully is a sitcom about an alien race that have noticed that those all-at-once invasions of Earth never work out that well. So they've locked the small Buckinghamshire village of Cresdon Green behind an impenetrable force field in order to study human behaviour and decide if Earth is worth invading.
The only inhabitant who seems to be bothered by their new alien overlord is Katrina Lyons, who was only home for the weekend to borrow the money for a deposit for a flat when the force field went up. So along with Lucy Alexander (the only teenager in the village, willing to rebel against whatever you've got) she forms The Resistance - slightly to the annoyance of her parents Margaret and Richard who wish she wouldn't make so much of a fuss, and much to the annoyance of Field Commander Uljabaan who, alongside his unintelligible minions and The Computer (his hyperintelligent supercomputer), is trying to actually run the invasion.

Paul Temple and the Spencer Affair, That Old Intuition
The suave amateur detective confronts theatre impresario Rupert Dreisler - and fears for his wife Steve.
Francis Durbridge's thriller stars Peter Coke as Paul Temple and Marjorie Westbury as Steve in another intriguing case for BBC radio's smoothest sleuth and his glamorous wife.
With James Thomason as Sir Graham Forbes, Brewster Mason as Rupert Dreisler, Hugh Manning as Vosper, James Beattie as Charlie, John Graham as Eric Lansdale, Isobel Dean as Terry Gibson, Simon Lack as Adrian Frost, June Turbin as Judy Milton and Thomas Heathcote as Pete Roberts.
From 1938 to 1969 the fictional crime novelist and detective Paul Temple, together with his Fleet Street journalist Steve, solved case after case in one of BBC radio's most popular series. THU 06:30 Bill Mitchell: The Man Who Wrestled Pumas... Probably (b00l1q7h)
Miriam Margolyes presents a documentary charting the life and career of her late colleague and friend Bill Mitchell, the voice-over artist who informed us the latest blockbusters would be 'at cinemas near you from Sunday', told us 'Carlsberg was probably the best lager in the world', and that Denim was 'for men who didn't have to try too hard'.
Born in Canada, he admitted that heavy drinking and smoking from his teens helped preserve the voice, and indeed drove his excessive lifestyle. He 'had to' abuse his body to maintain the voice and he 'had to' be in a Soho pub because it was handy for the recording studios.
Bill's career spanned acting, voice-over work, plus a brief spell as 1970s pop outfit Yin and Yan with friend Chris Sandford. His remains ranked as one of the greats within the advertising industry.

With a focus on the lives, loves and tribulations of the local clergy and rural gentry, the canvas is broad and colourful, with a wonderful set of iconic characters whose lives we become intimately involved in as they grow up, grow old and fall in or out of love and friendship across the years.

Caroline Quentin - My Brilliant Divorce
Caroline Quentin stars in Geraldine Aron's radio adaptation of her Olivier nominated West End hit - a comedy drama about surviving divorce with your sense of humour intact.
Good-natured, slightly overweight, former window-dresser Angela (declared age 39, real age 51) thinks her marriage will last forever. But suddenly her husband Max, who has an irritatingly round head, loses his heart to beautiful young Rosa and moves out.
Cheerful about her unexpected freedom at first, Angela's spirits begin to droop as she copes with a mother who won't acknowledge the break-up because she considers divorce 'common', a misogynous solicitor, and Christmas alone (apart from Dexter the family dog and a number of help-line counsellors).
She gets regular updates on the wild expenditure and goings-on at the love nest via her cleaner, Meena, whose sister Leena - also a cleaner - works for Max.
As she tells us of the ups and downs of her life and wryly observes how society treats freshly single women of a certain age, Angela learns how to deal with - and even enjoy - life on her own.
Eccentric, poignant and funny, Angela's journey will resonate with anybody who's lived through a break up.

Series 25, Kirsty MacColl
Broadcaster Janice Long tells Matthew Parris why singer-songwriter Kirsty MacColl led a "great life" despite her tragically early death in a boating accident in Mexico in 2000.
Kirsty MacColl was a supremely gifted singer-songwriter in the "English" tradition, often compared to Ray Davies or Morrissey for her kitchen-sink realism and sardonic wit. She loved pop but insisted on witty and literate writing, and, whilst sporadically successful in her own right, she was everyone's favourite collaborative artist. She battled stage-fright and writers block to produce five outstanding albums, and worked with The Smiths, Talking Heads, the Rolling Stones, Simple Minds and U2. She once described her talent as a "one-woman-Beach Boys" for her ability to layer and orchestrate harmonies.
Her father, Ewan MacColl, was a famous folk singer, but Kirsty had no interest in folk music - a clear rejection of the world her father inhabited - and wanted instead to create great, "edgy" pop records.
She died in controversial circumstances when she was hit by a speedboat whilst on a diving holiday in Mexico in 2000.

FRI 06:30 The Flower Fields (b01nb02j)
There's a gold rush in Cornwall; it's been going on for more than a century - producing the first flowers of spring, daffodils especially. Like mining, it's marked the landscape, and there are networks of tiny fields west of Mousehole and in the Isles of Scilly. Smaller than tennis courts, they nestle, safe from the wind between high hedges, warm on south facing terraced cliffs. From these old flower fields, called quillets, came something even more valuable than the 'Golden Harvest' of daffodils that bloomed earlier than anywhere else in Britain - delicate Cornish violets, carnations and anemones. From Victorian times to the 1960s fragrant bunches of these sped overnight by rail to reach the London markets in the morning.
The writer Michael Bird, who lives in St Ives, listens while Bill Harvey works the plots his father tended. They are too small to admit machines and depend on the long-handled Cornish shovel. At Churchtown Farm on St Martins in the Scillies, Keith Low explains how the fields were created, by first building, then moving entire dry stone walls. With the internet and the post these old fields have become key to a modern business.
Michael walks the cliff gardens with the archaeologist Graeme Kirkham, who interprets the landscape they pass through. He draws on the recorded memories of flower farmers and workers to recapture the life of the flower fields and the industry's mysterious skills and traditions - such as boiling the soil in huge cauldrons at the end of the season to sterilise it for next year's anemones. And he meets Bob Paterson at Covent Garden market who remembers selling the violets and anemones that came on the Penzance trains, and hopes he might again.

Each edition includes two episodes, with John initially quizzing the artist about the album in question, and then, in the B-side, the audience puts the questions. Both editions feature exclusive live performances.
Programme 5. "True" with Gary Kemp and Tony Hadley
Thirty years ago Spandau Ballet released their third album 'True'. It became a worldwide smash hit featuring tracks such as 'Gold', ''Pleasure', 'Communication' and the title track, which spent 4 weeks at the top of the charts. Singer Tony Hadley and Gary Kemp, the man who wrote all of these songs, both came to the BBC Maida Vale studios to discuss their inspiration and influence.
Released in 1983 'True' became one of the stand out albums of the New Romantic movement. Recorded at the legendary Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, Producers Steve Jolley and Tony Swain gave the band a slicker, more R&B sound aimed at squarely at the charts.
The B-side of the programme, where it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions, can be heard tomorrow at 3.30pm
Complete versions of the songs performed in the programme (and others) can be heard on the 'Mastertapes' pages on the Radio 4 website, where the programmes can also be downloaded and other musical goodies accessed.
