London 1958: Unassuming civil servant Thomas Foley is plucked from his desk at the Central Office of Information and sent on a six-month trip to Brussels. His task - to keep an eye on The Britannia, a brand new pub which will form the heart of the British presence at Expo 58, the biggest World's Fair of the century and the first to be held since the Second World War.
As soon as he arrives at the site, Thomas feels that he has escaped a repressed, backward-looking country and fallen headlong into an era of modernity and optimism. He is equally bewitched by the surreal, gigantic Atomium, which stands at the heart of this brave new world, and by Anneke, the lovely Flemish hostess who meets him off his plane.
But Thomas's new-found sense of freedom comes at a price. The Cold War is at its height, the mischievous Belgians have placed the American and Soviet pavilions right next to each other - and why is he being followed everywhere by two mysterious emissaries of the British Secret Service?
Expo 58 may represent a glittering future, both for Europe and for Thomas himself, but he will soon be forced to decide where his public and private loyalties really lie.

Swordplay and Swagger
Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, continues his new object-based history. Taking artefacts from William Shakespeare's time, he explores how Elizabethan and Jacobean playgoers made sense of the unstable and rapidly changing world in which they lived.
With old certainties shifting around them, in a time of political and religious unrest and economic expansion, Neil asks what the plays would have meant to the public when they were first performed. He uses carefully selected objects to explore the great issues of the day that preoccupied the public and helped shape the works, and he considers what they can reveal about the concerns and beliefs of Shakespearean England.

SAT 03:00 The Barchester Chronicles (b03vd163)
Anthony Trollope's Barchester Towers, Games at Ullathorne
3/3
Games at Ullathorne
by Anthony Trollope, dramatised by Nick Warburton
Miss Thorne brings the whole of Barchester together for a summer Fete - and unwittingly introduces the two adversaries, Mr Arabin and Mr Slope. But now their rivalry is at a height, each having realised their love for the widow, Eleanor Bold.
Music composed by David Tobin, Jeff Meegan and Julian Gallant
Director: Marion Nancarrow
Barchester Towers is the sequel to The Warden. Starting 4 years later, it follows Mr Harding, his daughter Eleanor and his son-in-law, Archdeacon Grantly. Eleanor has returned home after Archdeacon Grantly has accused her of wanting to marry Obidiah Slope. Her disappointment in Francis Arabin has increased, as he seems to be more interested in the tantalising Madeline Neroni. Unknown to Eleanor, Madeline is encouraging her brother, Bertie, to pursue Eleanor too. And on top of all this, there are still two unanswered questions: who will be Warden of Hiram's Hospital and who will replace the old Dean if he dies?
The Barchester Chronicles is Anthony Trollope's much-loved series of witty, gently satirical stories of provincial life set within the fictional cathedral town of Barchester and the surrounding county of Barsetshire. With a focus on the lives, loves and tribulations of the local clergy and rural gentry, the canvas is broad and colourful, with a wonderful set of iconic characters whose lives we become intimately involved in as they grow up, grow old and fall in or out of love and friendship across the years.
And the Barchester Chronicles return with "Dr Thorne" in May.

Regulating the Press
As the British press braces itself for the Leveson Report, Steve Hewlett explores past attempts to regulate it - or encourage it to regulate itself.
Steve begins by discovering how offending publishers were treated in the seventeenth century, when if you were flogged down Fleet St to the pillory you were getting off relatively lightly.
With the help of original documents from the period, he traces how, once licensing was lifted in 1695, the ideal of the free British press was born, only for real journalists and publishers to find themselves encumbered by taxes, libel laws and political influence.
In the 1920s, the rising divorce rate gave journalists ample opportunity to report the salacious sexual details revealed in the consequent flurry of court cases.
After a long period when governments had largely given up trying to regulate the press, the hardline Home Secretary, Sir William Joynson-Hicks moved a law to ban such unpleasantness.
However, it was only after the Second World War that there was a new series of attempts not to regulate the press by law, but to find a way to avoid that - by fostering self-regulation.
Steve finds out why the post-war period saw no less than three Royal Commissions on the Press - only for these to be followed by widespread objections in the 1980s that the press was out of control.
Instances like the publication of a rape victim's photograph and some of the reporting of the Hillsborough disaster, along with political objections to the invasion of privacy, were followed by yet another Inquiry, led by Sir David Calcutt.
And so, in 1990, the Government announced that the press was being given one final chance to make self-regulation work - or legal controls would follow.
But that never happened. The Calcutt Report led to the setting up of the Press Complaints Commission, but was then shelved - a fact that has not gone unnoticed by Lord Justice Leveson.
Producer: Phil Tinline.

Autumn term at Addison University. Two months after a freshers' week party, Stephanie makes her way to the police station and a young man is stunned to be accused of rape.
Eileen Horne's fiction is inspired by far too many real events. Many students in the UK today will be impacted during their time at university by a sexual assault case, as complainant, witness, supporter - or the accused.
Stephanie is a fresher at a party when she encounters Charlie and, in a few short minutes, their lives are changed forever. The subjectivity and so-called 'grey areas' in the ensuing legal case are explored through the use of rolling monologues, as the narrative passes between the two young people at the centre of the accusation and on to those who surround and support them.

The Primary Phase, Fit The Sixth
Arthur and company escape from a war, but exactly when have they escaped to? By Douglas Adams. From April 1978.
Arthur Dent is one of only two survivors from Earth, demolished to make way for a by-pass. He survived thanks to his friend, Ford Prefect (who hails not from Guildford, but somewhere near Betelgeuse), a writer for the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, "the most successful book ever to have come out of the great publishing corporations of Ursa Minor". They've managed to escape from Restaurant at the End of Universe on the Black Ship only to find themselves where they never thought they'd be, only 2 million years earlier. What on earth are they going to do when face to face with 'how, why and where phases' of galactic development?
The global multi-media success story that is "Hitchhiker's" started life as a Radio 4 series in March 1978. The original scripts by the late Douglas Adams then went on to spawn a series of novels, a feature film, at least three stage shows, a TV series, a computer game, a collection of comic books - and various towels.
The Guide helpfully informs us that the most obscene expletive in the Galaxy is "Belgium".
Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge and died in 2001 aged 49, after a fatal heart attack in his gym in California.
The answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything is 42.

John Osborne meets Pamela Lane in 1951 and within three months the couple are married. So begins an extraordinary love affair that lasts over 30 years.
A completely fresh insight into the mind of one of the UK's greatest playwrights, the letters between John Osborne and his first wife, actress Pamela Lane, are also a love letter to a now defunct system of repertory theatre and life in post-war Britain.
As these letters reveal, soon after their divorce, Osborne and Lane began a mutually supportive, loyal, frequently stormy and sometimes sexually intimate alliance lasting thirty years until Osborne's death. By the mid- 1980s, they had become closer and more trusting than they had been since their earliest years together.
'You are for me what you always were,' Pamela told him, 'I am in love with you still.'
'It is,' he declared, 'my fortune to have loved someone for a lifetime.'
Acerbic, witty, candid and heartbreaking, the letters reveal a unique relationship - troubled, tender and enduring.
The author, Peter Whitebrook, was born in London and has written and broadcast extensively on the theatre and literature. His co-adaptation of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath won a Fringe First Award. His biography of John Osborne was nominated for both the Sheridan Morley Prize for biography and the Theatre Book Prize.

John and Laura - A Working Relationship
Fi Glover introduces a conversation between colleagues who went for the same job but didn't both get it. Twelve years on, they reflect upon power in the workplace, proving once again that it's surprising what you hear when you listen.
The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation with someone close to them about a subject they've never discussed intimately before. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. SUN 15:45 The Lore of the Land (b068tl6k)
Episode 1
In the first of a five part series examining the enduring relevance of the creatures of British folklore, medieval literature scholar Dr Carolyne Larrington travels to Shropshire to the foot of the mighty Wrekin in search of the most prolific landscape shapers in British folk tales - the giants.
A hill that stands tall above its surroundings, the Wrekin offers panoramic views of eleven counties. Carolyne is joined by local storyteller Amy Douglas who has lived in the shadow of the Wrekin all her life.
Walking up the side of the Wrekin, Amy tells the story of the giant who is said to have formed the hill following an attempt to drown the people of Shrewsbury. When Carolyne reaches the peak she comes across a peculiar rock formation called the Needle's Eye which was said to have been created during a violent struggle between two giants.
As well as shaping the landscape through excessive rage, giants also take on the role of oversized engineers in the folklore of Great Britain. Carolyne reveals that the Anglo Saxons had no tradition of building in stone so the Roman cities fell into disrepair. The Old English poets often remarked on these ruins as the ancient work of giants.
It's not just giants who bring about landscape features, the Devil is said to create standing stones and strange rock formations across the British Isles. In Cornwall, monoliths and stone circles are often associated with King Arthur, who has become a mythical being in our traditional folk tales. Carolyne explains that, in British folklore, these figures become a way of talking about huge processes, about geological time which slowly, but irreversibly leaves its marks on a landscape.

SUN 23:30 Hannah Gadsby: Arts Clown (b05419l4)
Edouard Manet's Olympia
Art historian Hannah Gadsby kicks off her radio series of comedy lectures about four masterpieces, with Edouard Manet's masterpiece 'Olympia'. She shares her first encounter with the art work as well as looking at what critics had to say about it at the time it was created.
Born in Tasmania, Hannah's first encounters with art was solely through books. These books taught her the language of art appreciation but they also legitimised her desire to look at 'boobs'. This was just as well as Hannah realised in her teens that she was 'a little bit lesbian' but homosexuality was still illegal in Tasmania at that time.
The painting 'Olympia' was first exhibited in Paris in 1865. It made a lot of people very angry at the time. Here was a reclining nude but this woman had attitude, looking right at the observer with no embarrassment or demureness. She was a whore - what of it?
The woman who posed for the painting was Victorine Meurent, not a prostitute but an artist in her own right and, says Gadsby, surely she had a major influence on Manet's considerably feminist approach to 'the reclining nude' in this painting.
Hannah explains what makes 'Olympia' a cornerstone of modern art and what bring her personally back to this painting again and again.
Hannah Gadsby is assisted in this series by her very own 'Quotebot' who has been inputted with every quote that's ever been written about art.
Quotebot sounds remarkably like comedy legend and all-round boffin John Lloyd.

Amelia (Anna Emerson) is in too, as she is desperate to see a real life tiger in the wild. So a reluctant Jane and her excited companions head for India and find themselves in a yoga class.
Inevitably Lucy falls heavily and inappropriately in love with their highly bendy instructor and tries to get him to notice her by noisily running through a series of stretches directly in his eye-line. Jane is also intrigued by him too. She recognises him from somewhere. Tim Franks recalls the 1972 Olympics and the triumph of Dame Mary Peters in the Pentathlon and asks those who strove to beat her what impact being an Olympian had on their lives.
For millions of British viewers the grainy picture of Mary Peters giving her all in the final event of the Pentathlon in the Munich Olympics was the brightest moment of a games lit up by Mark Spitz and Olga Korbut only to be blighted by the massacre of Israeli athletes.
But for those taking part in the Pentathlon this was their moment, their chance to take part in Olympic competition. The impact of winning on Dame Mary Peters is a familiar story but what of the others who made up that field, the German Heide Rosendahl who lost out by the blink of an eye, or the Canadian Diane Jones who gashed her leg on the hurdles in the first event. And he goes further into the field hearing from the other British athlete Anne Wilson who was well placed after the first event, and Margaret Murphy, the Republic of Ireland's only competitor. And way back down the field Lin Chu-Yu.
In this unique view of those two days of competition and the lives that followed Tim hears what it meant to be an Olympian and how those memories have played out over forty years since Mary Peters smile shone across the Stadium in Munich on hearing, from her rival Heide, that she'd triumphed.
So was it enough to Take Part or are their nagging frustrations still about the tiny margins between winning and losing or the giant chasms between the competitors supported by their national sporting bodies and those, like Margaret Murphy who relied on the goodwill of local schools and a generous priest who cleared a run up to a temporary sandpit so that she could work on her long jump.

His task: to keep an eye on The Britannia, a brand new pub which will form the heart of the British presence at Expo 58 - the biggest World's Fair of the century, and the first to be held since the Second World War.
But Thomas's new-found sense of freedom comes at a price: the Cold War is at its height, the mischievous Belgians have placed the American and Soviet pavilions right next to each other - and why is he being followed everywhere by two mysterious emissaries of the British Secret Service?
Expo 58 may represent a glittering future, both for Europe and for Thomas himself, but he will soon be forced to decide where his public and private loyalties really lie.

Series 2, Parents
Second series of the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous, written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery. Stars Sue Johnston, John Hannah, Eddie Marsan, Rebecca Front, Paul Kaye and Julia Deakin.
Love in Recovery follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Taking place entirely at their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and - most importantly - tell their stories.
In this fifth episode, Simon's son Joe (Alex Lawther) is grounded, so Simon (John Hannah) has dragged him along to the meeting. He's in trouble, he's worried, he's out of his depth. And that's just Simon. Will Julie (Sue Johnston) have the answers he's looking for?
Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls - with one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
There are lots of different kinds of AA meetings. Love in Recovery is about meetings where people tell their stories. There are funny stories, sad stories, stories of small victories and milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and those stories that you really shouldn't laugh at - but still do, along with the storyteller.

Jonathan Coe - Expo 58, Episode 7
London, 1958: unassuming civil servant Thomas Foley is plucked from his desk at the Central Office of Information and sent on a six-month trip to Brussels. His task: to keep an eye on The Britannia, a brand new pub which will form the heart of the British presence at Expo 58 - the biggest World's Fair of the century, and the first to be held since the Second World War.

WED 06:30 Balalaika Born Again (b01g61v9)
Pat Metheny or Paganini? Who is Alexey Arhipovskiy?
This is the story of the humble, three-stringed balalaika and the story of a maverick Russian virtuoso, Alexey, who wants to transform the balalaika's image; to show it is more than a piece of folksy soviet souvenir kitsch. Alexey has developed a beautiful new sound and a new repertoire for the balalaika, mixing a classical music sensibility with the temperament of prog rock. With his trusty manager, Mikhail, he wants to take the balalaika out of Russia and beyond the former Soviet borders. But can he take Russia out of the balalaika? Nick Baker travels to Moscow to meet him.
He finds a musical rebel and an intriguing character who combines both adult seriousness and childlike enthusiasm for an instrument once played only by peasants. At the Gnessian Musical Academy, Alexey's Professor recalls a gifted musical student who took his formal classical training and turned it into something else. He added his own spirited individualism, as well as some electronic effects.
In Dubrovnik, Croatia, Nick meets up with Alexey again as he prepares to perform at the Julian Rachlin and Friends Chamber Music Festival. He is virtually the only non-classical act on the bill. The festival is full of five star ex-Russian prodigies whose families left Russia in the 1980s and brought with them tried and tested classical music. What happens next?

Series 1, Episode 3
Broadcaster and comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli sets out to find the next generation of white, black, Asian and minority ethnic satirical sketch writers, with a keen eye on finding the funny in a multicultural Britain.
Traditionally, some of the best UK sketch comedy shines a satirical light on social issues of the time, finding comedy from difficult subject matter or awkward social convention. When it comes to multiculturalism, sketch team Goodness, Gracious Me kicked open the door with their classic 90s sketch show, including the legendary Going For An English routine.
Sketchtopia aims to make sharp observations about modern Britain and, most importantly, allow shared experiences, common points of reference and authenticity to come together and hold a mirror up to our society and tell us a truth about ourselves.
Stand-ups and comedy writers from diverse backgrounds have been invited to give us a comic snapshot of UK society through their own observations and experiences. In these divisive times, Sketchtopia aims to poke fun at our multicultural society and tries to discover a diverse, multi-ethnic Utopia through good old-fashioned British sketch comedy.

THU 06:30 Sud-U-Like (b00tbcdt)
From the very first UK laundrette in Queensway, West London (opened in 1949) to present day laundry-services, the laundrette has played a vital part in the UK's modern history. But is the popular opinion of laundrettes as unsavoury places to visit only when you are at your lowest a fair assertion?
As Yasmeen Khan discovers, not everyone finds laundrettes depressing places - for many, the local laundrette is as much a community centre and social hub as the pub - more Dot.com than Dot Cotton - such as Manchester's first Internet launderette, where customers can surf the net and watch films while washing their smalls!
Yasmeen also visits the Liverpool offices of Associated Liver Laundrettes, the UK's largest chain of laundrettes, and learns first-hand what business is really like in the clothes-cleaning industry - and what the future holds. The programme will also hear from Yasmeen's family - about why and how they ended up in the laundrette business (5 shops across Huddersfield), what the ups and downs of owning laundrettes were and just how much the people, machines and washing powder impacted on their lives.
Yasmeen takes a trip back to her Yorkshire home town of Huddersfield to visit the only one that has remained as a laundrette. And then there's "that advert", with the guy stripping off in the laundrette in front of the admiring ladies - did it only sell jeans, or did the laundrette business profit as well?
And of course, what programme about laundrettes would be complete without a trip to the most famous laundrette in the country? Yasmeen pops down to Albert Square to learn all about the role the Eastenders washeteria has had in the history of the soap-opera, and to find out why it has remained a key location for so many years.
Produced by Neil Gardner and Yasmeen Khan

London, 1958: unassuming civil servant Thomas Foley is plucked from his desk at the Central Office of Information and sent on a six-month trip to Brussels. His task: to keep an eye on The Britannia, a brand new pub which will form the heart of the British presence at Expo 58 - the biggest World's Fair of the century, and the first to be held since the Second World War.

When war came, her knowledge of the tribes, geography and politics of the area made her a vital asset to British intelligence. In the wake of British victory in Mesopotamia, she became a key figure in the the post-war administration of the turbulent area, as the British grappled with how best to reduce their military commitment while still retaining influence - a situation that was to find strong echoes in post-war Iraq 90 years later. A woman who rose to the top in a man's world, her personal life was beset with ill-starred romance and tragedy.
Physicist Jim al-Khalili was born in Iraq at a time when Gertrude Bell was still revered as someone who fought for Iraqi self-determination. With the help of Bell's biographer, Janet Wallach, he explores her remarkable life. Matthew Parris chairs.

FRI 06:30 ...But Still They Come (b01pf5cx)
"...But Still They Come' explores the enormous impact and influence of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The World's, telling the story of the recording of the original album, the various incarnations produced in the 35 years since its release and the 2012 version, re-recorded for a new generation.
This programme explains how and why Jeff Wayne began working on a concept album based on H.G. Wells' science fiction masterpiece and the years of hard work it took to realise his vision.
In the summer of 1978, the UK album charts were dominated by Disco and Punk, with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack firmly entrenched at number one. It was an audacious move and a huge gamble to release a double concept album based on a Victorian science fiction novel. But the compelling blend of progressive rock, classical music, Richard Burton's narration and the fascinating story struck a chord with music fans all over the world and the album became a massive hit, supported by the singles Forever Autumn and Eve of the War.
Guests contributing recollections of the part they played in Jeff's creation include David Essex who voiced The Artilleryman and Justin Hayward who sang Forever Autumn. The programme also contains never-before-heard studio interaction with Richard Burton, David Essex and Jeff Wayne during the original recording sessions.
In the years since its release The War Of The Worlds has morphed in to live stage shows, computer games and apps. Now Jeff has re-interpreted the record for a 21st century audience with a new recording featuring Liam Neeson and Gary Barlow (who both contribute to this programme), and Joss Stone.

He uses carefully selected objects to explore the great issues of the day that preoccupied the public and helped shape the works, and he considers what they can reveal about the concerns and beliefs of Shakespearean England.

The Secondary Phase, Fit The Twelfth
Arthur and Zaphod learn some unpalatable home truths, but not before disappointment from the ruler of the universe. From 1980.
The global multi-media success story that is "Hitchhiker's" started life as a Radio 4 series in March 1978 and a second in 1980. The original scripts by the late Douglas Adams then went on to spawn a series of novels, a feature film, at least three stage shows, a TV series, a computer game, a collection of comic books - and various towels.
The Guide helpfully informs us that the most obscene expletive in the Galaxy is "Belgium" - greater detail is forthcoming in an earlier episode of this second radio series.
Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge and died in 2001 aged 49, after a fatal heart attack in his gym in California.
The answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything is 42. If you work out what the Ultimate Question is, please let us know.
First heard on BBC Radio 4 with Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Geoffrey McGivern and Stephen Moore. Produced by the late Geoffrey Perkins.
