Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. MON 06:30 Cheaper Than Walking (b01n61sc)
Many of them had three wheels and engines more suited to powering lawnmowers. They looked like they'd escaped from a funfair ride and had names like the Allard Clipper, the Opperman Stirling, the Bond Mark A and the Frisky Family Three. In Cheaper Than Walking Andy Kershaw rediscovers a brief golden age in British car-making when we excelled in producing very, very small cars.
He looks back to a time of post-war austerity, of household budgets on a shoestring, a time when political upheaval in the Middle East, particularly the Suez Crisis, cast a dark shadow over fuel supplies. Across the UK, in workshops from Preston to Wolverhampton, from London to the Isle of Man engineers came up with the solution as they set to work on designing and producing microcars, better known today as bubble cars.
Andy climbs into the cramped, underpowered, noisy world of British microcars and meets the people who love them. His starting point is the Isle of Man and the only car ever to be produced there. In the early 1960s, the Peel Engineering Company decided to diversify from making fibre-glass boats into manufacturing cars. The result was the P50. Its wheels were five inches in diameter and equipped with go-kart tyres. When you wanted to park or reverse the P50 you simply got out, grabbed a chrome handle at the back of the car and manhandled it in much the same way as you might manoeuvre a shopping basket on wheels.
Andy sets off in the smallest car he - or anybody else - has ever driven to explore a social and mechanical phenomenon. In Kent Andy visits Jean Hammond, custodian of the largest private collection of microcars, the Hammond Collection, which was assembled by her late husband Edwin. She has a Peel P50 there, of course, but she also has a Bamby, a Bond, a Frisky and, rarest of all, one of the only two surviving examples of the Allard Clipper. Jean also runs the Register of Unusual Microcars, a treasure trove of lovingly crafted one-offs, hand-built in the 1950s and 60s by small engineering firms in carriage-works and garages.
'Lovingly-crafted one-offs' is also a good description of many of the enthusiasts Andy meets on his travels. He visits the annual get-together of bubble-car fans, the National Microcar Rally and he talks to two of the engineers who were involved in creating these wonderful vehicles back in the 1950s and early '60s.
If you want to upset anybody in the microcar world, just mention the Mini. Alec Issigonis' creation, unveiled at the 1958 Motor Show, may have been a triumph for the British motor industry and an icon of the 1960s but it rang the death knell for the real British microcar. Why have three wheels and two seats when you could pay £100 more and own a family car with four wheels? With the arrival of the Mini the bubble (car) burst.
In this programme Andy Kershaw recalls the golden age of British microcars. At a time when we're only too aware of tightening budgets, he celebrates a uniquely creative, three-wheeled answer to post-war austerity and evokes a lost era of tiny family companies making tiny family cars.

Series 4, PhilanthropyIn this series, Simon Evans examines the concept of the 'free lunch' and shines a light on new ways of making money in the 21st century.
There are many apparently 'free' economic models operating today but what are they and how do they work? Across four episodes Simon and his team will explore Social Media and how we often appear to enjoy it for free. Later on Simon examines the perhaps unfair belief that some multinationals appear to operate tax free. And what about the billions being given away 'for free' by a new breed of philanthro-capitalists? Finally, what can we learn from these operating models to help that beloved yet creaking institution, the NHS, which is also apparently free at the point of use?
As a wise person once said, there's no such thing as a free lunch. If you're not paying, you're the product.
Also featuring Financial Times economics god Tim Harford and Timandra Harkness, author of 'Big Data: Does Size Matter?' with contributions from the Queen of MoneyWeek, Merryn Somerset Webb.
Episode 3: Philanthropy
There comes a point in every busy tycoon's life when he or she realises that accruing vast wealth, power and prestige has not brought with it the warm glow they had hoped for. The solution was suggested several hundred years ago, most notably by the Earl of Shaftesbury - philanthropy. Literally - the love of what it is to be human - but more usually meant as, charity, but on a large scale and with your name over the door. But is it as economically straightforward as it seems?

Tonight, extracts from her "Country Dwelller's Year", first published in monthly instalments in the Scots Magazine during 1946. Howe ..... low-lying land
Orra loon ..... a lad employed to do miscellaneous unskilled work
Hairst ..... harvest
Jessie Kesson (1916 - 1994) was a prolific writer of novels, poems, stories, newspaper features and radio plays. She came through a hard start in life (born in the Inverness workhouse, raised in an Elgin slum, removed from her neglectful but much-loved mother to an orphanage in Aberdeenshire) with a passionate determination to be a writer. She combined a successful writing career with a variety of jobs, from cleaner to artist's model, and was a social worker for nearly twenty years, settling finally in London with her husband.

WED 06:30 The Wonderful Weightless World of the Flexidisc (b00sgbcr)
Long before the invention of the MP3, there was a way of getting hold of music, speech, and other audio sensations, free of charge, in the form of flexidiscs. Originally developed in the 1930s to play at 78rpm, by the 1960s, seven-inch, 45rpm flexidiscs were so cheap to produce, and so light and bendy, that they were often given away free with a magazine. In the Soviet Union, though, where flexidiscs were called roentgenizdat, and were recorded on disused medical x-ray sheets, the audio was usually of an illegal nature, such as jazz music, or, later, punk rock. In telling the story of the flexidisc, we'll hear plenty of music, some of which is now valuable (such as the Rolling Stones Exit on Mainstreet Blues, given away with New Musical Express in 1972).
In tracking down the story of flexidiscs, presenter Paul Bayley meets collector Jez Randell, journalist Ian Shirley, and the novelist Tim Lott, who co-founded Flexipop magazine in the early 1980s (which gave away a free flexi with every issue). The programme includes extracts from flexidiscs galore, including several advertisements for products as diverse as crisps, hair pieces and rat poison, music from big band jazz to beat groups to punk rock, and some of the most famous recordings made on flexidisc including Beatles fanclub records, Private Eye's satirical flexidiscs and the sound of humpback whales, from the world's biggest circulation flexidisc ever.
Presenter Paul Bayley previously presented The Strange Parallel World of Christian Pop for Radio 4, which subsequently inspired Frank Cottrell Boyce's radio play The Believers. The producer is Bob Dickinson.

Following the death of his wife, Ångström is posted to the Njalsland peninsula where he becomes embroiled in a labyrinthine murder (or possibly not-murder) case which bears an eerie similarity to the Askeladden killings - a case from his distant past.
In episode 4, the last in this series, the investigation takes Ångström and Mina to the remote Celibate Puffin Island (but it's all one word in Swedish) where they find a possible connection between the Askeladden murders and the sinister Bolax Corporation, bringing them closer to finally discovering the identity of the mysterious Ash Lad...

Anthony Trollope - The American Senator, Episode 1The American Senator
By Anthony Trollope
Dramatised by Martyn Wade
Part One
Arabella is determined to keep her engagement to John Morton a secret. Perhaps, there is a more exciting and wealthy husband she might be able to catch ...
Anthony Trollope..........Robert Glenister
Arabella Trefoil.............Anna Maxwell Martin
Lady Augustus.............Barbara Flynn
John Morton.................Blake Ritson
Senator Gotobed..........Stuart Milligan
Reginald Morton...........Daniel Rabin
Mrs Morton..................Richenda Carey
Mary Masters...............Penelope Rawlins
Lawrence Twentyman...Carl Prekopp
Lord Rufford.................Henry Devas
Mr Bearside.................Sean Baker
Directed by Tracey Neale
The Story:
In this little known tale, Anthony Trollope never allows The American Senator's attitude to get in the way of plot -and his ability to weave story strands which arise out of credible motivation, psychology and emotion is as sure as ever. The characters are as finely drawn as we have come to expect from the pen of Trollope. There's the extraordinary Arabella but also the comic, kind natured and the tragic characters too.
Arabella finds herself in the ignoble occupation of husband/fortune-hunting. She's aware that the years are passing and the strain of numerous failed relationships have made her prospects increasingly poor. She is unofficially engaged to John Morton, a diplomat, and owner of a large estate, but now the wealthy and more exciting Lord Rufford has come into view. His estate being larger and more grand. Surely he is worth fighting for?
Arabella, encouraged by her monstrous mother, Lady Augustus, decides to try and keep Morton on the back-burner (but deny her engagement in public) while engineering a series of compromising situations in an outrageous attempt to win Rufford.
But Arabella is playing a dangerous game and although her behaviour is both conniving and ruthless, she is extraordinary and powerfully-drawn and so does not become an out-and-out anti-heroine. She is, to some degree, the victim of her situation - and of her mother. She is courageous as well as devious, and she has her pride. As the tale concludes and she seeks some degree of redemption she achieves tragic status.
A parallel but secondary plot concerns Reginald Morton, an elder cousin of John, and Mary Masters, who is the complete antithesis to Miss Trefoil. Mary's absurd, domineering stepmother thinks that Mary should marry a besotted local farmer, Lawrence Twentyman but Mary is in love with Reginald Morton. Is he in love with her though? She finds support in the shape of Reginald's kind and gentle aunt, Lady Ushant, but there is the stern and grim grandmother of both John and Reginald who stands in the way of happiness because of a long-standing family feud.
Elias Gotobed, the visiting senator of the book's title, has little impact on events - but he has an important part to play as an observer of events; a gauche but vigorous critic of the antiquated elements of English society and the establishment. Gotobed's conclusions are a supplement to those which can be drawn from Arabella's tale, where greed, class-consciousness and snobbery are mercilessly displayed.
'The American Senator' is, in part, a state of the nation novel - enhanced by the parallels between Trollope's world and ours. Arabella has her modern-day equivalents, and the Senator's remarks throughout the dramatisation about the working man's passive and subservient nature have not lost their relevance.
The Author:
Anthony Trollope produced a vast collection of work about credible people and their foibles. He gained recognition as a writer who portrayed English life is a wry and honest manner with a cast of humorous and delightful characters. His portrayal of female characters is particularly skilful and Arabella Trefoil is no exception.
The Dramatist:
Martyn Wade is a skilled and talented radio writer and dramatist. He has dramatised the 'Barsetshire' novels for radio and the 'Palliser' series too. His other Trollope dramatisations have included 'Orley Farm' and 'Miss Mackenzie'. He also dramatised Ada Leverson's 'The Little Ottleys' for Woman's Hour.

Anthony Trollope - The American Senator, Episode 2The American Senator
By Anthony Trollope
Dramatised by Martyn Wade
Part Two
Lord Rufford has kissed Arabella twice but she realises that much more needs to be done to win him and his estate. It is now time to tell John Morton she no longer wants to marry him?
Anthony Trollope..........Robert Glenister
Arabella Trefoil.............Anna Maxwell Martin
Lady Augustus.............Barbara Flynn
John Morton.................Blake Ritson
Senator Gotobed..........Stuart Milligan
Lady Ushant................Joanna David
Reginald Morton...........Daniel Rabin
Mary Masters...............Penelope Rawlins
Lawrence Twentyman...Carl Prekopp
Lord Rufford.................Henry Devas
Duchess of Mayfair.......Elaine Claxton
Mounser Green............Joanathan Forbes
Mrs. Masters...............Jane Whittenshaw
THU 11:00 Jessie Kesson Short Stories (b04hmrvf)
Until Such TimesThe final story in our series of readings from the work of the acclaimed Scottish author Jessie Kesson. Best known for her novels "Another Time, Another Place" and "The White Bird Passes", Jessie Kesson's writing was often inspired by events from her own life and by the landscape of North East Scotland.
Tonight's story is a beautiful evocation of a child's struggle to make sense of the adult world around her. Her unmarried mother, whom she calls "Aunt" Ailsa, is unable to provide a home for her and she has been sent to the countryside to live with her grandparents. There is one instance of strong language.

Man, Machine and MemoryIn the 1950s, mathematician and Bletchley Park code breaker Alan Turing envisaged a sophisticated computer whose mechanical generation of responses would be indistinguishable from that of a human.
In this programme Martin Sixsmith looks at the way this metaphor of human cognition has informed research into memory and perception.
He considers the work of the 1930s Cambridge psychologist Frederic Bartlett and the American memory specialist George Miller. He talks to Alan Baddeley who with Graham Hitch developed a new theory of working memory, and to Peter Thompson of the University of York about the way our brains perceive and process information - sometimes failing to spot the most obvious.

Golda Meir was born in Kiev and educated in the United States, but moved to Palestine her twenties, just after the First World War. One of the signatories on Israel's Declaration of Independence in 1948, Meir was elected to the Knesset and stayed there until she retired in her late sixties. But when prime minister Levi Eshkol died unexpectedly she was called back to take his place. She was the compromise candidate but stayed there for five years and was in power during the Yom Kippur War.
Edwina Currie admires her conviction and humanity, and that fact that she reminds her of her granny.

FRI 06:30 Architects of Taste (b01d2l30)
Historian and actor Ian Kelly explores the cross over between food and feasting, art, architecture and performance.
From the most extravagant medieval feasts and festivals, to the modern gastronomy of chefs like Heston Blumenthal and Ferran Adria, food has long been moulded, sculpted, and displayed against the most theatrical of backdrops. Ian Kelly explores the story of artistry in cookery, and argues that it's a neglected cultural phenomenon.
He looks at the life of Antonin Careme, the first celebrity chef, whose enormous sugar sculptures and piece montees, for the likes of Napoloeon and the Prince Regent, epitomised centuries of high eating. And the Victorian Alexis Soyer, whose 'symposium of all nations' rivalled the Great Exhibition in its gastronomic extravagance.
We also hear from the chef Ferran Adria, Jane Asher, food historians Ivan Day and Marc Meltonville, and chef Anne Willan, and jelly mongers Bompas and Parr about how a new generation of food artists are bringing back the spirit of Careme in their events and performances.

Series 1, Billy Bragg (the A-Side)John Wilson's series in which he talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them. Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios.
Programme 1, A-side. 'Talking With The Taxman About Poetry' - Billy Bragg reveals how the self-proclaimed 'difficult' third album was written and created with a guitar he bought when he was out shopping for swimming trunks (he claims he still swims naked as a result)... he explains how a film about the James Brothers helped him write "There's Power In A Union'... and describes how Andy Kershaw's inability to shut up led him to writing 'Levi Stubbs' Tears'. And he plays excerpts from the album live in front of the audience.
In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions and Billy considers the state of protest songs today, reveals what music he is writing at the moment and explains what poetry he would discuss with today's taxman.
Other programmes include Paul Weller talking about The Jam's final album, 'The Gift'; Suzanne Vega recalls the making of 'Solitude Standing', the album that made her a worldwide superstar; and Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone takes us back to the seminal Zombies' record 'Oracle And Odessey'
Complete versions of the songs performed in the programme (and others) can be heard on the 'Mastertapes' pages on the Radio 4 website, where the programmes can also be downloaded and other musical goodies accessed.
