SAT 00:30 Soul Music (b05stg0l)
Series 20, Scarborough Fair"Tomorrow we're going in search of a song and in search of a dream of England which has travelled right around the world" - Will Parsons
No one can be sure of the true origins of the song Scarborough Fair. It's a melody of mystery, of voices of old, of ancient days. It's travelled through land and time, drawing singers and listeners in where ever they maybe.
For Will Parsons and Guy Hayward it's a song that has inspired a pilgrimage through a landscape that is embodied in the lyrics. Setting off from Whitby Abbey, they journey to Scarborough on foot, sensing the song as they go, learning to sing it, interpreting it in a new way just as thousands of traditional singers have done throughout time.
This too is the landscape of Martin Carthy, the 'father of folk' who has made his home along the Yorkshire coast. It was from this legendary singer that Paul Simon first learnt Scarborough Fair, creating a version that came to represent a generation continuing its journey far and wide, weaving its spell in many different guises, never truly being pinned down.
Decades on Harpist Claire Jones recorded a version of her own. Arranged by her husband, the composer Chris Marshall, hers is a very personal journey through unexpected illness to recovery. Whilst for Mike Masheder it is a song that brings memories of his wife Sally, who approached the journey of life with love and equanimity.
"It can change or stay the same. And the more it changes, the more it stays the same" - Martin Carthy

SAT 09:00 Putting You Through, Caller (b098hjv5)
In 1958, the Queen made the first direct trunk telephone call. It was the beginning of the end for the female operators known as the 'Hello Girls'.
Telephone operators had connected callers since the earliest days of the telephone, eighty years before. Despite the intimacy of 'phone conversations, subscribers willingly accepted the presence of a third voice on the line.
In this three hour programme for Radio 4 Extra, Shaun Ley uses drama and comedy from the BBC archives to demonstrate how the telephone operator became a valuable dramatic device. With the aid of GPO's own recordings and the BT archive, Shaun explores the role of the operator, the strict rules governing their work and some official secrets.
The programme includes extracts from Liz and Sally, a 1960s post office recruitment film, Burn Your Phone - a Radio 4 play from 1995, in which Alan Cumming plays a telephone operator beset by voices, requests and problems, and the 1966 radio play, "If you're Glad, I'll be Frank".

The Food IndustryAndrew Maxwell is one of the UK's most informed and fearless stand ups. In this series of one-off stand up shows, he uses his trademark intelligence and political incisiveness to dig behind the clichés and assumptions about four possible threats to British society: food, the internet, drugs and Nationalism.
This series will showcase a comedian at the top of his abilities tackling difficult and important 'slow news' topics with a depth and perceptiveness that remains outside the remit of mainstream 'topical' comedy.
In this first episode, Andrew looks at the food industry. From horseburgers right up to snail ice-cream, it seems like there's something wrong with every rung of the food ladder. But given that food is essential to survival, shouldn't we be clearer about what it is we want from the industry that provides it?
Always adept at making shrewd, balanced and very funny political observations, Maxwell was one of the first comics at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival to react to the riots in England and the Arab Spring and evolve his act accordingly to rave reviews and a nomination. He performed his 2012 Edinburgh show That's the Spirit at the Assembly Rooms George Square to sell out audiences and followed this with a run at London's Soho Theatre. He also performed at the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival last year including a performance at the televised American Dream Gala and at the Udderbelly Festival.

Norn But Not Forgotten - Sounds of ShetlandPoet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive with 'Norn But Not Forgotten, Sounds of Shetland'.
The dialect of the Shetland Islands is one of the most distinctive spoken within the British Isles: heavily accented, and studded with words left over from the now extinct Norn language which was spoken on the islands until the late 18th century. Even now, reaching for expressions to describe the natural world, places, the seasons of the year, food, tools, colours, moods or states of agitation or excitement, Shetlanders will often use Norn words.
Kathleen Jamie visits Shetland to meet up with the poets who revel in the language, both those born on the island and those who've moved there.
Shetland, and its distinctive accents and words, has proved surprisingly receptive to poets from mainland Scotland and England who have chosen to make it home. What is it about the Shetland dialect that so excites and fascinates poets? Kathleen asks the TS Eliot award-winning poet Jen Hadfield, who was born in Cheshire, and Raman Mundair, who was born in Ludhiana in India and came to live in Glasgow at the age of five, about choosing to write about Shetland's distinctive landscape, people and way of life in its own tongue.
Kathleen also meets acclaimed Shetland language poet Christine De Luca who was raised on the island and who has made the opposite journey, leaving the rugged landscape of the island to live and work on the mainland.
Rich with the sounds - and not just the language - of the islands, Kathleen Jamie explores how this dense linguistic community has managed to excite and engage some of Britain's leading poets.

TUE 06:30 Hearing Ragas (b01mf7nd)
This is violinist Professor Paul Robertson's remarkable story of the Indian ragas he heard from within a coma, and the healing effect that Sir John Tavener's music had on him in his recovery.
When Paul and John met at a conference in 2007 they discovered that they had a shared interest in near death experiences. During the course of their conversation, John stated that he wanted to write a piece for Paul involving four string quartets to be called "Towards Silence". John duly wrote the piece and Paul started to make arrangements for its premiere. At this point, John suffered a heart attack and was taken into intensive care in Switzerland. Within weeks, Paul's aorta gave way and he found himself in a London hospital. During his six week coma, Paul had a series of horrific visions, but was occasionally comforted by the sound of a woman singing Indian ragas. Only when he came out of the coma did he realise for the first time, that the music John had written for him: "Towards Silence", was based on an Indian raga. Paul then used the practising of this piece to rehabilitate himself after the paralysing strokes he'd suffered during his coma.
Paul and John are brought together to share their experiences properly for the first time and to talk about what happened to them; how they view their respective illnesses and how these episodes have changed their lives.
It includes music by Sir John Tavener, a soundtrack by Simon Hall and Sanchita Pal singing Ragas.
There will be a longer version of this programme available on Listen Again at the time of TX which includes more detail about Paul's recovery. There will also be a chance for listeners to hear more of the conversation between Paul and John Tavener on the programme's web page.

On the Road2/3. On the Road. Writer and stand-up performer AL Kennedy wonders if it's so important to her, then why does she spend so little time there?
After all, a writer these days is seldom at home. There are therefore, she muses, all manner of things to be learned about your accommodation options: avoid rooms over pubs where the new day's clean linen is dumped on the carpet outside every door; try and insist on running water, maybe of two different temperatures and only from the taps. How to deal with posh room service, dodgy room service, in-room picnics and the lack of kettles across Europe.
Is it, she wonders, worth learning conversational breakfast phrases in other languages?
Perils to avoid: noise, light, the crazy people next door, the people having sex next door, the lift
doing TARDIS impersonations all night, free-floating despair, the ventilator that funnels smoke into your bathroom, the mayhem that breaks out in the streets at
3am, wildlife, health difficulties and the
almost universally insane people who run B&B's.

Series 2, Episode 4by Alistair Beaton and Tom Mitchelson.
A comic satire set in the struggling world of newspapers. The paper gets a hot tip about a Lib-Dem MP. Could they be about to unseat the coalition?
Maddox ..... John Sessions
Oliver ..... Alex Jennings
Freddy ..... Stephen Wight
Carol ..... Polly Frame
Masha ..... Debbie Chazen
Julie Compton ..... Joanna Monro
Producer ..... Sally Avens
Alistair Beaton and Tom Mitchelson's satire is set in the world of modern newspapers.
A group of dysfunctional journalists attempt to cover major news stories at the same time as grappling with the demands of working in a multi-platform environment, watching circulation figures plummet and the recession causing half the workforce to be laid off.
At the heart of the comedy is the relationship between Maddox Bradley; a journalist who mourns the day of proper investigative journalism and Freddy, the online editor who will regurgitate a press release quite happily and call it a story. But they have a grudging respect for the each other as Freddy helps Maddox stay afloat in the world of Twitter, Facebook and podcasting and Maddox shows Freddy how to sniff out the real story. Both are at the mercy of Oliver, the pragmatic editor more concerned with keeping his job, and Carol, the news editor who believes that circulation will increase if they run pieces on Big Mac eating orang-utans and 'intelligent' skunks rather than Maddox's moral crusading diatribes. And only Masha, the Russian head of online communities, who wants to give away all their content because that is true democracy, knows Freddy's secret; that he's a posh boy from Eton rather than a hypercool kid from the street; well that's what Freddy thinks anyway.

The Homes of Others3/3. Home Sweet Home - The Homes of Others.
What's home to you or I?
Writer and stand-up AL Kennedy asks why she spends so much time away from her own hearth and home, when so much of her life is spent on the road.
It took a year for her to make the recent move from Glasgow to London. This only brought home the recognition of how important it is to have a room of one's own - especially a bathroom of her own.
But when staying with others, and in particular, relying on the generosity of friends, there's the challenge of observing the peculiar bathroom etiquette of others, while being polite to one's hosts. And when she's house-sitting, and those generous friends are away on holiday, there's the issue of lying awake at night in their habitual, well-used beds, everything in their home covered with the patina of their lives, an intrusion too far.
Producer: Mark Smalley.
WED 11:15 Afternoon Drama (b01pthkc)
by Gregory Evans.
After ten years of estrangement, Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan, two giants of American theatre, are forced to confront their intense, almost brotherly friendship - and how that friendship was destroyed by the great moral and political dilemma of the time.
Directed by Marc Beeby
Background
For five heady years, Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan were the closest of friends and collaborators. From 1947, when Kazan directed Miller's first Broadway hit All My Sons, their stars rose together. In 1949 Kazan directed Death of a Salesman, sealing their reputations and partnership. For the next two years they worked on the film that would become On the Waterfront. In Hollywood, Gadg introduced Art to one of his ex-girlfriends, Marilyn Monroe, who became Miller's wife and muse.
However in 1952 Kazan named names to the House Un-American Activities Committee out of fear of being blacklisted by Hollywood (Miller defied HUAC two years later). The friendship ended in blame and bitterness: the two men didn't speak for over ten years.
But by the early '60s Miller was struggling with his first new play in almost a decade - a work, though he refused to admit it, more confessional than anything he'd ever written. After the Fall dealt with the very issues and events that had ended his friendship with Kazan. It featured characters based on Kazan, Monroe and Miller himself, with scenes and dialogue drawn directly from their lives.
Broke and badly in need of a hit Miller agreed Kazan should direct After the Fall. Despite misgivings about working with Miller and about the play, Kazan took the job. He cast his mistress (Barbara Loden, whose character and personal history were very similar to Monroe's) in the role of Maggie/Marilyn, adding to the looking-glass aspect of the enterprise. During rehearsals President Kennedy was shot; and Kazan's wife of thirty years died suddenly.
But Art & Gadg simply picked up from where they had left off a decade earlier. Studiously ignoring the betrayals and traumas in their shared past (not only the anti-Communist witch-hunts, but Miller's divorce from Monroe and her death in 1962), they resumed their old collaboration.

Sadly it was a huge success and she's had to bang on about feminism ever since, perform two sell-out runs at the Edinburgh festival and win lots of awards.
But she hasn't managed to single-handedly eradicate sexism so she's made a whole new four-part series about it for Radio 4.
In the first episode, she asks who has the best sexism in the world, deconstructs a yogurt advert and looks at what happens when a perfectly normal woman appears on television.
She's assisted in this by the series' token man, Fred MacAulay who in episode one, reveals a hitherto unsuspected penchant for certain kitchen cleaning products.
The series is written and performed by Bridget Christie and the producers are Alison Vernon-Smith and Alexandra Smith.

THU 06:30 Tehrangeles (b01n0sc7)
Comedian Maz Jobrani takes a journey to Tehrangeles - home to the largest Iranian diaspora in the world, right in the heart of Los Angeles.
Recorded on location, Iranian stand-up comedian and actor Maz Jobrani begins his journey in a street lined with Iranian stores, restaurants, beauty salons, cafes and businesses, where everyone speaks Farsi and all the shop signs are in Persian. But this is not downtown Tehran - this is Westwood Boulevard in Los Angeles, a stone's throw from affluent Beverly Hills, where 22% of the population are Iranian, and whose former Iranian born mayor Jimmy Delshad epitomizes the extraordinary success of Iranians in LA.
When bookshop owner Bijan Khalili set up shop here over 30 years ago, there were only a few Persian stores. He and others along Westwood Boulevard tell the story of how and why the LA community steadily grew into a Mecca for hundreds of thousands of Iranians. And how, against the backdrop of 32 years of hostility between America and Iran since the 1979 US hostage crisis, they have succeeded in making their mark. Even Bravo TV (creators of The Kardashians) have recently aired a hit reality TV show about the lives of a group of affluent Beverly Hills Iranians.
LA based Iranian- American comedian and actor Maz Jobrani delves into the heart of this unique and diverse microcosm of Iran in the heart of LA, otherwise known as Tehrangeles, to reveal the surprising stories and insights into the lives of Iranians who have recreated Little Tehran in the City of Angels.

THU 07:30 Lemn Sissay's Origin Stories (b07wpf5q)
The Bed Under the StairsBatman was an orphan; Lisbeth Salander, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, was an orphan; Superman was an orphan and a foundling. Cinderella was a foster child. Darth Vader - well, they can't all be winners. Lemn Sissay returns to BBC Radio 4 with a comic and poetic look at the treatment of children raised in care, orphans and foster children in popular culture, comparing them with reality. Because it surely says something about how we view them that we create so many for fiction.
Lemn will explore the gap between fiction and reality, based on his own experiences of growing up in care as well as those of some special guests.
1. THE BED UNDER THE STAIRS
In this first episode, Lemn discusses his experiences as a foster child, comparing them to the life of Harry Potter. Like Harry, Lemn was never told the truth about what happened to his parents. Like Harry, he found his foster parents harsh and unforgiving. But, like Harry, he came through those problems, avoided the dementors, and grew up.
As well as storytelling, comedy and poetry, Lemn imagines an interview with Vernon and Petunia Dursley - Harry's foster parents. Finally, they get to tell their side of the story.
Written and performed by ... Lemn Sissay
Producer ... Ed Morrish
Lemn Sissay is the author of six collections of poetry. He has also written plays for stage and BBC radio. His radio documentary Child of the State was nominated for the 2010 Sony Awards, and last year's two-part series for Radio 4, Lemn Sissay's Homecoming was described by The Spectator as "a poignant, mind-stretching half-hour ... This was truly innovative radio", and caused The Observer to remark, "What a thing to hear in Radio 4's
6.30pm slot - the sound of genuine happiness; also regret, anger, wonder, bursting from the radio with the unexpected exuberance of a child dancing at a chamber concert ... terrific radio".
Lemn was the first poet to write for the Olympics 2012 and received an MBE for Services to Literature. He is associate artist at the Southbank Centre, an (hon) Doctor of Letters, and currently the Chancellor of the University of Manchester. If you should Google "Lemn Sissay" all the returning hits will be about him. There is only one person named Lemn Sissay in the world.
LEMN SISSAY'S ORIGIN STORIES IS A BBC STUDIOS PRODUCTION.
