SAT 00:30 Soul Music (b01blj2b)
Series 13, Gresford, the Miners' Hymn
The haunting melancholy of Gresford, the Miners' Hymn, is the music explored in this week's programme.
Written by a former miner, Robert Saint, to commemorate the Gresford pit disaster in 1934 it has been played at mining events ever since; most notably at the famous Durham Miners' Gala.
Contributors to the programme include:
(note: since the programme was broadcast, we've been contacted by the daughter of the man who wrote the words to Gresford: his name was George Leslie Lister and he wrote the words in 1970).
Albert Rowlands, now 91, was working in the lamp-room of Gresford colliery when there was a devastating underground explosion. His father was among the men lost.
Peter Crookston is the author of 'The Pitmen's Requiem' a book which explores the history of the great northern coalfield and the life of Robert Saint.
Robert Saint's grandson, David Saint, is the acting principal of the Birmingham Conservatoire and organist at St. Chad's Cathedral in Birmingham. Playing through Gresford on the cathedral organ, he explains what makes the piece work at an emotional level.
Cecil Peacock is a former miner, musician and music teacher. Illustrated by his own rendition of Gresford, he recalls playing Gresford at the funerals of 83 miners who died following the Easington Colliery disaster in 1951.
Max Roberts is the Director of the hugely successful play, The Pitmen Painters, which tells the story of a group of miners in the 1930s who studied art and whose work became internationally renowned. He talks about why he decided to use the hymn Gresford - sung wonderfully in harmony - at the end of the play.
Roy Dickinson attended the famous Durham Miners' Gala every year. As a small boy he was overwhelmed when he walked into the vast space of Durham Cathedral... hung with miners' banners proclaiming socialist slogans... with Gresford as the musical backdrop... bringing tears to the most hardened of miners' eyes.
Canon David Griffiths is a former miner, and was once the priest of Gresford Parish Church. He commissioned a painting to commemorate the disaster and the men who lost their lives.
With thanks to Trevor Sutherland and the Llay Welfare band who kindly allowed us to use their version of Gresford to illustrate David Griffiths' interview.
Producer: Karen Gregor
NB: Some sources say that 266 men lost their lives, some say 265. The figure given in the official report of the Public Inquiry by HM Inspector of mines is 265, which is why this number was quoted in the programme.
This quote from Peter Crookston's book 'The Pitmen's Requiem' provides clarity (thanks to Mr Crookston for permission to quote):
Of the 261 men killed by the explosion in the Dennis Section of the mine, at 2 am on Saturday 22 September 1934, only 11 bodies were recovered. All had died from poisoning by carbon monoxide, a gas known to miners as afterdamp, which is formed following an explosion of firedamp. Three members of a rescue brigade died from the same cause later that day as they tried to find survivors.
'Fire followed the explosion,' wrote the Chief Inspector of Mines, 'and more particularly an extensive fire in the main intake airway.which was fought continuously and unavailingly until the evening of the following day, by which time it was certain that all men unaccounted for must be dead and the conditions as regards the presence of inflammable gas had become imminently dangerous.'
Both shafts of the colliery were capped and sealed off. For three days after the explosion other explosions followed as fire raged through the gas-filled section of the mine, one of them killing a surface worker when he was hit by debris blown out through a capping seal. This brought the total number of dead to 265.
A man died months later and the miners' union said he had also been a victim of the disaster, so his name was put on the memorial in Wales, which is where the figure 266 comes from. But for those actually killed by the explosion, its aftermath and the gas, the figure is 265.

SAT 01:30 Hemingway in Havana (b017x3pd)
The least chronicled chapter of Ernest Hemingway's life is the 20 years he spent in Cuba. The political stand off with the USA meant that scholars were denied access to his home, Finca Vigia, and to the many papers and books he left there after his suicide 50 years ago in 1961.
But now, as Susan Marling reports from Cuba, a unique partnership between the Cubans and conservators and academics from America has allowed the house (and Hemingway's beloved fishing boat, Pilar) to be restored and, more importantly, many of his letters, manuscripts and books have also been saved.
Susan visits the house, speaks to Hemingway experts about the significance of the documents and gives an account of the writer's deep love of Cuba, its people, landscape and the fabulous Gulf Stream.
Producer: Susan Marling
A Just Radio production for BBC Radio 4.
SAT 02:00 Book at Bedtime (b01q03r1)
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Episode 5
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is Muriel Spark's best known and best loved novel - the justly enduring story of an Edinburgh school teacher who eschews the normal curriculum in favour of lessons on the Italian Renaissance painters, on Mussolini and stories of her own love life. As she seeks to mould her 'set' of girls of an impressionable age, into the 'crème de la crème', and as her love becomes complicated by affections for and from the art and the singing masters, she identifies two girls, one of 'instinct' and one of 'insight', in whom her ambitions will chiefly lie. But despite her own unassailable convictions, life does not always work out as planned and amongst her own set there will be those who begin to question her authority and purpose.
A writer with a keen eye, a biting wit and a pithy sense of comedy, Muriel Spark created in Jean Brodie a character who remains as vivid as she was in 1963, the year the book was published. Charismatic, unfettered by school boundaries, literal or metaphorical, she is the teacher who steps beyond the bounds of prescriptive education to the true sense of the word, opening the eyes of her girls to a wider world. Spark also captures the city of Edinburgh, a character in itself, and of a time - those years in the thirties when, denied conventional marriage, war-bereaved women sought other paths to fulfilment.
Sparkling, funny, fresh and tragic, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie fully deserves its place in the canon of twentieth century literature. Today: Sandy realises that 'you can only betray where loyalty is due'.
Gerda Stevenson is an actor, writer and director, winner of the Vanbrugh Award at RADA.
The abridger is Sally Marmion
The producer is Di Speirs.

One of Britain's finest comedians, Rob Newman returns to Radio 4 with a witty, fact-packed series mixing stand-up and sketches, challenging notions of Survival of the Fittest and The Selfish Gene with a new theory that's equal parts enlightening and hilarious.
Rob is our guide on a journey through a unique audio A-Z of nature that takes in everything from altruistic amoebae and dancing squid to Richard Dawkins wrestling naked with a postal worker.
Piecing these fragments together allows Rob to correct some major distortions of Darwinism, as well as rejig the theory of natural selection in the light of what we now know about epigenetics, mirror neurons and the Flintstones.

SAT 06:00 Annie Caulfield - Glass Chair Chair Glass (b08cqbtl)
What might have happened if magician, Tommy Cooper had met absurdist playwright, Eugene Ionesco in Paris in 1975?
Imaginary comedy starring Russ Abbot as Tommy Cooper, Harriett Walter as Gwen Cooper, Allan Corduner as Eugene Ionesco, Emily Bruni as the Actress and Hugh Ross as Miff Ferrie.
It could have happened. In the throes of a paranoia laced drunken spree, Tommy Cooper may not be in the best place to enter Eugene Ionesco's world, where events have the logic of a dream, where people don't tell the truth or even know what it is and where mysterious and brutal threats are always close. Survivor of Nazis and Stalinists, in permanent exile from his native Romania, Ionesco was always drawn to anarchic comedy as the only way to express the world. His plays generate emotion rather than obvious meaning because he felt life was too unstable to mean very much. Ionesco and Tommy Cooper's world views collide with surprising results, concluding that laughter is often the only real revolution we have left.
Annie Caulfield's play waltzes us through thoughts about the state of the world, how to make a salt pot disappear, and how to travel on imaginary motorbikes, as Cooper and Ionesco ask the question; Is comedy just business, escapism or is it for the soul?
Directed by Marilyn Imrie and produced by Gordon Kennedy for Absolutely Productions.

Cowes Regatta, Royalty and Posterity
In this episode, Essex and his A selection of readings from the personal memoirs of Clifford Essex, which have remained unpublished since they first appeared in magazine format in the 1920s. In this episode, Essex and his pierrot troupe are invited aboard the Royal Yacht at Cowes to entertain His Majesty King Edward VII.
The seaside pierrot troupe is an uniquely British art form, which began in 1891. That year, a gifted banjo player and producer of entertainments for society events, called Clifford Essex, watched a performance of L'Enfant Prodigue at The Prince of Wales Theatre. It was a largely mimed performance featuring a family of pierrots and it gave Essex the idea of costuming a concert party in white satin, pompoms and ruffles, to perform banjo pieces at The Henley Regatta and, later that year, at Cowes.
The project was a resounding success and led to his troupe performing throughout the country for almost three decades. During this time, the idea was copied and developed in such a way that, by the 1920s, there were more than 500 pierrot troupes performing along the coasts of Britain. These troupes were the stand-up comedy club and indie pop charts of their day - it was here that artists honed their craft by learning old routines and developing new ideas. They paved the way for the styles of music and humour that subsequently found a mass audience on radio and television.
The reader, Tony Lidington is known by many people as 'Uncle Tacko', leader and founder of The Pierrotters, the last-remaining professional, seaside pierrot troupe in Britain, now in its 27th year of performing.

The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. SUN 17:00 Poetry Extra (b08bs38h)
A Foreigner Everywhere
BBC Radio 4's Poet in Residence, Daljit Nagra revisits BBC's radio archive with a profile of poet Elizabeth Bishop.
In 'A Foreigner Everywhere', Paul Farley explores the American's extraordinary years in Brazil, and how her rootless, traveller's condition inspired her creativity.
Elizabeth Bishop has been called the poets' poets' poet', and her work, often complex and multi-layered, examines the big themes of home, travel and identity. Though she's regarded as an American poet, for nearly two decades Bishop lived in Brazil, where she wrote much of her best work. Essentially an orphan from the age of five, and a constant observer, a 'foreigner everywhere', she speaks to our modern rootless condition, asking how and where we find a sense of 'home'.
Paul explores how Bishop tackles questions of travel, and how she challenged approaches to other cultures in the early days of mass tourism. Bishop met the love of her life in Brazil, became deeply involved in the Brazilian political tumult of the 1960s, and made the trip of her life up the Amazon River. But her Brazil years also ended in tragedy.
In many ways a poet of our times, Paul explores how her often overlooked Brazil years offer a new way into Bishop's work and its relevance - a constant observer, portraying life in all its nuanced complexity.

MON 06:30 Hemingway Days (b013f96m)
Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway, who together launched the Red or Dead label, have long been admirers of Robin and Lucienne Day, a husband and wife design team from another era.
As we mark the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain this summer, Wayne looks back at the impact of Robin and Lucienne Day on post war Britain and how they emerged from the FOB to spearhead our understanding of modern design.
He talks to colleagues, friends and family about their vision and their drive and explores some of the less well known areas of their personal lives and their creative partnership.
Lucienne was a textile designer. Inspired by abstract art, she pioneered the use of bright, optimistic, abstract patterns.
Robin was a furniture designer best known for his injection moulded polypropylene stacking chair, of which over 20 million have been manufactured.
The Days shared a vision of good, affordable design for all. Together they established themselves as Britain's most celebrated post-war designer couple, and have often been compared to their US contemporaries, Charles Eames and Ray Eames.
But despite their growing fame in the 50s and 60s they remained uncomfortable with the public attention they received. They shared a passion for nature and spent more and more time outdoors. Lucienne drew much of her inspiration from plants and flowers and Robin was a talented and obsessive mountain climber.
In this programme Wayne reflects on the many layers to Robin and Lucienne and, with his wife Gerardine, he draws on their own experiences of working as a husband and wife creative team.

A Broken Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen's Secret Chord, Episode 1
As Leonard Cohen turns 80, a new biography by Liel Leibovitz explores the life, work and passion of the poet-turned-musician. What makes Cohen such an enduring international figure in the cultural imagination?
Granted extraordinary access to Cohen's personal papers, Leibovitz evokes a complicated, sometimes contradictory figure. Born into a Canadian religious Jewish family, for years a reclusive lyricist on the Greek island of Hydra, known for his bold political commentary, his devotion to Buddhist thought and his later despair over contemporary Zionism, Cohen hardly follows the rules of a conventional rock star.
An intimate look at a man who, despite battles with depression and years spent in hermit-like isolation, is still touring and now seems to be reaching a new peak of popularity.
Read by Julian Barratt, with Leonard Cohen quotes read by Colin Stinton.

TUE 06:30 Schrodinger's Quantum Kittens (b00wr9qb)
Robin Ince examines Schrodinger's Cat, the paradox at the heart of quantum physics, and discovers its influence on science and popular culture. Fifty years after the death of Nobel laureate Erwin Schrodinger, the quantum mysteries of his cat-in-a-box paradox still continue to drive physicists in research today. Can a living thing be both alive and dead at the same time?
Schrodinger's experiment was an almost playful creation, but one that stabbed at the heart of the 1930s physics establishment. By the 1950s, US physicist Hugh Everett concluded that, indeed, both a dead cat and an alive cat can exist, but in separate universes. His 'Many Worlds' theory inspired authors, from Philip K Dick to Philip Pullman.
Robin follows in the Austrian physicist's footsteps to Oxford University, where Schrodinger was once a fellow, and unearths some original archive at Magdalen College. Physicist Sir Roger Penrose speaks about its impact on quantum theory to this day. Why has Schrodinger's Cat gained such currency not just in science but popular culture? Writer Alan Moore tells how it created a new wave of 1960s sci-fi literature.
So why has Schrodinger's Cat caught the imagination of non-scientists? How is it misinterpreted and used to explain mankind's many unknowns? What is its place at the cutting edge of quantum physics? Robin meets today's physicists and thinkers who still tangle with the idea. And we find, no doubt, that Schrodinger's Cat (in all probability) is very much alive today.

Born into a Canadian religious Jewish family, for years a reclusive lyricist on the Greek island of Hydra, known for his bold political commentary, his devotion to Buddhist thought and his later despair over contemporary Zionism, Cohen hardly follows the rules of a conventional rock star.
An intimate look at a man who, despite battles with stage fright and years spent in hermit-like isolation, is still touring and now seems to be reaching a new peak of popularity.
In episode 2, despite success as a poet, Cohen feels the need to escape to the Greek island of Hydra.

Burns and the Bankers
Helen Simpson's hilarious and poignant short story, dramatised for radio by Liz Lochhead, Scotland's Makar (national poet).
Sophie Thompson, Greg Wise, John Sessions and Peter Forbes star in this warm-hearted midwinter's-night sex comedy.
When Nicola Beaumont (English, partner in a law firm, mother of four) sits down to a long-winded corporate Burns Supper, she sweeps us up in her private account of the evening's events. At first impatient with all the whisky-fuelled pomposity around her, Nicola finds herself surprisingly moved as the traditional rituals of a Burns Night unfold. What she comes to learn about the eighteenth-century Scots poet, Robert Burns, brings new self-knowledge which will help her through the night's violent emotions and climactic events.
This production brings together acclaimed English short story writer, Helen Simpson, and Liz Lochhead, award-winning dramatist and Scotland's Makar.
Helen Simpson's story 'Burns and the Bankers' is part of her collection 'Hey Yeah Right Get a Life' (Jonathan Cape, 2000); her latest book is 'A Bunch of Fives: Selected Stories' (Vintage Classics, 2012).

THU 07:30 The Cold Swedish Winter (b04fyjqb)

Episode Four and it's a new season of the year in this Englishman abroad sitcom from Danny Robins (the writer of the Lenny Henry comedy 'Rudy's Rare Records') This series is set and recorded in Sweden and stars Adam Riches, Danny Robins and some of Sweden's most popular TV comedy actors. Geoff, a marginally successful stand-up comic from London, is moving to the tiny, cold and unpronounceable village of Yxsjö in northern Sweden; a culture shock forced on him by his Swedish girlfriend Linda's decision to move home to raise their child. This series follows his first year attempting to settle in his new home, each episode set in a different season.
Geoff has to contend with snow, moose, pickled herring, unemployment, snow, Maypole dancing, snowmobiles, snow, meatball rolling, saunas, social democracy, snow, the weirdest pizzas in Europe, bears, deep forests, death metal, illegal alcohol, snow... Above all he has a new family to contend with. The Andersson's bewilder him - from father Sten (Thomas Oredsson - Crimes of Passion to be broadcast on BBC Four this year), who has a worrying tendency to growl like a bear and threaten him with any blunt instrument to hand to Gunilla (playwright and comedian Anna-Lena Bergelin), who threatens him with naked folk-dancing. It's worth it all for Linda, of course, apart from her new found urge to conform with everything and except for her brother, a Goth with a propensity to set fire to things. And his fellow immigrants are no less unsettling: Ian (Danny Robins), a divorcee, who has been depressed for the last eight years and Soran (Farshad Kohlgi - The Killing), a Danish Kurd with Swedophobia.

A Broken Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen's Secret Chord, Episode 4
An intimate look at a man who, despite battles with stage fright and years spent in hermit-like isolation, is still touring and now seems to be reaching a new peak of popularity.
Today, disasters threaten Cohen's first European tour, but in Buddhism he finds the spiritual solace which enables him to write the groundbreaking Hallelujah.
Read by Julian Barratt, with Leonard Cohen quotes read by Colin Stinton.
