SAT 00:30 Soul Music (b00zsdsn)
Series 11, Mahler's Adagietto
Adagietto from Mahler's 5th Symphony
Mahler wrote his 5th Symphony during the summers of 1901 and 1902. The Adagietto is the 4th movement which is thought to have been inspired by falling in love with Alma who he married around this time. This single movement is Mahler's most well known piece of music. It was famously used in the 1971 Luchino Visconti film Death in Venice And it was also conducted by Leonard Bernstein at the mass at St Patrick's Cathedral, New York on the day of the burial of Robert Kennedy.
In this programme, composer David Matthews explains the significance of this piece in Mahler's output. Psychoanalyst Anthony Cantle describes listening to it with his mother during her last days of dementia. Malcolm Reid tells how this piece signified a change in himself as a young man in the British police force with narrow, racist views, to hearing it in Australia and shifting his to becoming a liberal. And Helen Epstein explains why it was played at her mother's funeral.
Producer, Rosie Boulton.

SAT 01:30 The Art Bunker (b012fs6h)
This journey inside a mountain in Bosnia reveals the unlikely location for a new festival of contemporary art, which aims to help move the country on from a mindset haunted by war. In May 2011, the 1st Time Machine Biennial opened in what might be the strangest art-space ever: a vast, underground bunker, originally built for President Tito and the Yugoslavian military leadership to survive in the event of nuclear attack from Russia - Yugoslavia having been expelled from the Cominform group of soviet nations as far back as 1948.
The ARK bunker (the initials stand for Atomska Ratna Komanda - Atomic War Command) took 26 years to build, 280 feet inside a mountain overlooking the town of Konjic, near Sarajevo, behind an entrance disguised by three very ordinary-looking houses. The 75,000 sq ft, U-shaped, concrete labyrinth contains facilities for 350 people to survive for 6 months, and the fixtures and fittings are perfectly preserved.
Although a nuclear attack never happened, a technologically cruder, brutal, civil war certainly did. And it was as a result of that war that the previously secret bunker was discovered and handed over to the Bosnian army. In 2009, a committee of art historians, some from Sarajevo, some from Belgrade, secured financial backing for the Biennial from the Council of Europe to hold this new festival in the bunker.
Forty five artists were selected, roughly half of whom come from the republics of former Yugoslavia, and the rest representing Russia and the Baltic States, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, the USA and the UK. Bob Dickinson travelled to Konjic for the opening, witnessed challenging examples of new art from the region, and interviewed artists, organisers and local people who, until recently, never knew the ARK bunker existed.

SAT 02:15 The People's Post: A Narrative History of the Post Office (b0184vhd)
The Postal Worker's Strike
By 1890 Britain had a state of the art postal service with six daily deliveries in Britain's towns. To achieve this service, delivery staff often worked six day weeks with shifts split over a twelve or fourteen hour day. In sorting offices, postal staff complained of leaky roofs and inadequate toilets. Worse still, postmen weren't permitted their own independent union, and in 1890 frustration turned to industrial action.
As Royal Mail faces an uncertain future, Dominic Sandbrook charts the development of the post office and examines it's impact on literacy, free speech, commerce and communication.

SAT 02:45 Book of the Week (b01bbz1y)
Marcus Berkmann - A Shed of One's Own: Midlife Without the Crisis, Episode 5
For many men, middle age arrives too fast and without due warning. One day you are young, free and single; the next you are bald, fat and washed-up, with weird tendrils of hair growing out of your ears. None of it seems fair. With age should come dignity and respect, but instead everyone makes tired jokes about buying a motorbike.
Marcus Berkmann isn't having it. Having marked his fiftieth birthday by hiding under the duvet for six weeks, he is determined to find some light in the all-consuming darkness.
'We may have lost our hair, our waistline or our way completely. But we have also gained a certain amount of guile and what some might call "gravitas" (and others would call "weight").'
Musing over birth, death and all the messy stuff in between, he concludes that however dreadful you look in the mirror today, it will be much worse in ten years' time. His brutally candid dispatch from the front line is essential listening for anyone over thirty-five - as well as all those who want to prepare for what lies ahead...
Marcus Berkmann has spent more than thirty years sitting in front of various television screens swearing at incompetent England batsmen. In his leisure time he has written columns on sport for Punch, the Independent on Sunday and the Daily Express. He is a regular contributor to Private Eye and has been the Spectator's pop music critic for over twenty years. His books include Rain Men: The Madness of Cricket, Zimmer Men: The Trials and Tribulations of the Ageing Cricketer, Fatherhood: The Truth and A Matter of Facts: The Insider's Guide to Quizzing

SAT 03:00 Nigel Planer - On the Ceiling (b01l1vy1)
by Nigel Planer
Lapo ..... Phil Daniels
Loti ..... Bryan Dick
Pope Julius ..... Gary Waldhorn
Cardinal Alidosi ..... Roger Lloyd Pack
Composer ..... Adam Cork
Directed by Mary Peate
High up on the wooden scaffolding tower of the Sistine Chapel, two fresco plasterers get on with the day's work preparing the ceiling for their boss Michelangelo who has not bothered to turn up for work again. As they do so, they bemoan the uselessness of the great master.
Pope Julius and Cardinal Alidosi visit the chapel to inspect the progress of their commission. They are never very impressed, and the Pope is more concerned about getting Michelangelo to do his funeral monument at a knock-down price.
On the Ceiling is not about great artists; it is about those people whose names don't go down in history: the ones who do the essential drudge work, their frustration at their lack of genius and their pride in their own technical expertise. In this version of events, low elements combine to make high art.
Nigel Planer is best known as Neil in The Young Ones, and as Nicholas Craig - The Naked Actor. Other television productions include Shine on Harvey Moon; Dennis Potter's Blackeyes. On stage, Nigel has performed in Simon Gray's Unnatural Pursuits; Ben Elton's We Will Rock You and Hairspray.
SAT 04:00 The 3rd Degree (b041zcmf)
Series 4, University of Nottingham
A quiz show hosted by Steve Punt where a team of three University students take on a team of three of their professors.
Coming this week from the University of Nottingham, "The 3rd Degree" is a funny, lively and dynamic quiz show aimed at cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 listeners whilst delighting the current ones.
The Specialist Subjects in this episode are British History, Management Studies and Philosophy and the questions range from the International Monetary Fund., Kierkegaard and Wagner to the Fat Slags and Goofy
The show is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in a genuinely original and fresh take on an academic quiz. Being a Radio 4 programme, it of course meets the most stringent standards of academic rigour - but with lots of facts and jokes thrown in for good measure.
Together with host Steve Punt, the show tours the (sometimes posh, sometimes murky, but always welcoming!) Union buildings, cafés and lecture halls of six universities across the UK.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the 'Highbrow & Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, film, and One Direction... In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds, in which students take on their Professors in their own subjects, were particularly lively, and offered plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides...
The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more than just glanced at that reading list...
In this series, the universities are Bristol, Kent, Bedfordshire, Birmingham, Nottingham & Aberystwyth.
Producer: David Tyler
A Pozzitive Television production for BBC Radio 4

Overflow (incl Cast Lists)
The host, Steve Punt, although best known as a satirist on The Now Show is also someone who delights in all facets of knowledge, not just in the Humanities (his educational background) but in the sciences as well. As well as "The Now Show" he has made a number of documentaries for Radio 4, on subjects as varied as "The Poet Unwound - The History Of The Spleen" and "Getting The Gongs" - an investigation into awards ceremonies - as well as a half-hour comedy for Radio 4's 2008 Big Bang Day set in the Large Hadron Collider, called "The Genuine Particle". This makes him the perfect host for a show which aims to be an intellectual, fulfilling and informative quiz, but with wit and a genuine delight in exploring the subjects at hand.
The 3rd Degree is a Pozzitive production, produced by David Tyler. His radio credits include Armando Iannucci's Charm Offensive, Cabin Pressure, Bigipedia, The Brig Society, Thanks A Lot, Milton Jones!, Kevin Eldon Will See You Now, Jeremy Hardy Speaks To The Nation, Giles Wemmbley Hogg Goes Off, The 99p Challenge, My First Planet, The Castle and even, going back a bit, Radio Active. SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 (b03hmh46)
The Kennedy Book Depository
To mark the 50th anniversary President Kennedy's death, Mark Lawson looks at how his death has been reflected in novels, film and television.
We'll probably never know with absolute certainty exactly what happened on November 22nd 1963 in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, but that very imprecision allows creative artists full rein to exercise their narrative muscles. Oliver Stone's film 'JFK' suggested that the death was a complex conspiracy; Charles McCarry's 'The Tears of Autumn' put it down to revenge for the death of a Vietnamese General; and Don Delillo's 'Libra' conjures the backstory of the supposed assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. With archive recordings of Don Delillo and Oliver Stone and newly recorded contributions from veteran thriller writer and ex-CIA agent Charles McCarry and Richard North Patterson.

MON 06:30 Nightingales of India (b0210pl8)
Presented by Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, this is the remarkable story of two iconic sisters revered by Bollywood fans the world over. Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle are two of the finest and most prolific female vocalists in the business. They are playback singers extraordinaire - providing the singing voices of generations of film actresses.
The story of the sisters from a humble background parallels the story of Bollywood and of India itself.
Known as the 'nightingales of India', they have forged careers spanning more than six decades. One or the other of them is rarely out of the record books as the most recorded artist in the world.
The sisters were born into a theatrical family. Lata, the older of the two, who is interviewed in the programme was left, at the age of thirteen, to support the whole family. After much hardship she got her big break and, just as the Hindi film industry was taking off at the end of the thirties, a star was born. Now in her 80s, despite her fame and fortune, she leads a quiet, simple life and remains unmarried. Her younger sister Asha, now in her eighties too, was far from shy and retiring. Teenage elopement, affairs and divorce make her the dangerous half of the duo. She too made it to the top.
Everyone who is anyone in Bollywood has worked with or is familiar with the sisters' work. And the programme includes a rare interview with Lata Mangeshkar herself.
Producer: Mohini Patel.

Capital - the new novel by John Lanchester is the story of one south London street, which has seen a hundred years of fortunes made and lost, of hearts broken, of first steps and last breaths. And then, one day a card with a simple message drops through each letterbox: 'We Want What You Have'...
At forty, Roger Yount is blessed with an expensive life, a stalled marriage and a job in the City. His hoped-for Christmas bonus of a million pounds might seem lavish, but with second homes and nannies to maintain it's starting to look more like a necessity. At eighty-two, Petunia Howe just sits in her window, perplexed by how Pepys Road has changed in her lifetime, wondering why anyone wants what she's got. Elsewhere in Pepys Road, Zbigniew has come from Warsaw to indulge the affluent in their interior decoration whims and traffic warden Quentina has exchanged political activism in Zimbabwe for encounters with enraged motorists. At the end of the road, Ahmed Kamal runs the cornershop. For them all, this non-stop city offers the chance of a different kind of life.
Capital interweaves the lives and stories of the residents of Pepys Road in an utterly compelling, post-crash, state-of-the-nation novel told with compassion, humour and truth; epic in scope, yet intimate and contemplative.

Who would have thought that the careers of three of the most influential figures of the early Bombay film industry would actually begin on the stages and screens of London's West End theatres and cinemas?
But, as Sanjeev Bhaskar reveals, screenwriter Niranjan Pal, producer/actor Himansu Rai and actress Devika Rani all found fame first in Britain and learned much of their craft in the cosmopolitan film industry centred in London between the wars.
Drawing on recent research, Sanjeev pieces together a fascinating tale of two talented and determined Indian men and a ravishingly beautiful and intelligent Indian woman who crossed barriers of race, language and geography to create some of the most striking films of the early era and enter the hearts and minds of British audiences.
Their films include the pioneering feature-length silent epic The Light of Asia, which received a Royal Command performance at Windsor Castle in 1926, and the early talkie Karma (made in English) which premiered in Marble Arch in 1933, featured Indian cinema's longest kiss, and made an international star of Devika Rani.

WED 06:30 Corporate Karma (b00y28q3)
Once upon a time, yoga was a mystical eastern discipline, practiced in the west only by a handful of committed adherents. But in the last decade it's become mainstream. Up to a million Britons practice yoga, and it's moved from the ashram to the sports centre. And yoga chains have set up in business, each offering their own particular brand of the discipline - for example, Bikram yoga, where the exercises are done in a sweltering 40 degree heated room.
But as yoga becomes more commercial, traditionalists fear that the spiritual essence of the discipline has been lost. In classical yoga, the postures or poses are merely an aid to meditation, taking their place in an intricate philosophy of ethics and metaphysics. But have they simply become a form of keep fit? And there are fears about attempts to cash in on yoga. The inventor of Bikram yoga, Bikram Choudhury, has aggressively attempted to copyright "his" sequence of 26 postures, to the dismay of both independent yoga studio and the Indian government. Meanwhile in New York a yoga "talent agency" is marketing yoga teachers as superstars, hoping to cash in yoga's wholesome image; while one yoga clothing chain preaches new age self-help while specialising in stretchy fabrics that accentuate and flatter the female figure.
In this programme, Jolyon Jenkins investigates what's happened to yoga. Does the arrival of chains and franchises, all selling an identical product, mean that independent yoga studios will go the same way as independent coffee shops? Has the inner journey been replaced by competitive narcissism? And how can you franchise a spiritual discipline anyway?

Capital, Episode 3
Roger Yount's Christmas goes from bad to worse and Shahid Kamal has a surprise when an old comrade turns up.

THU 06:30 Nazi Gold: Publishing the Third Reich (b00zf4hz)
Why are books about the Third Reich such an ongoing publishing phenomenon in the UK....and what does it say about us?
According to trade magazine The Bookseller, there were no less than 850 new titles about the Third Reich published in the UK in 2010 (up from 380 in 2000 -.that's more than double in ten years). These join the thousands already available on Amazon covering everything from Hitler and the occult to SS uniforms and the teaspoons of the Third Reich; from Nazi bunkers and secret weapons to the regime's interest in flying saucers, the lives of the Fuhrer's personal pilots and (our favourite) 'How Astrology Guided Hitler's Germany'.
And there's no sign the market has become saturated, far from it: Hitler and his regime are known in the British publishing business as 'The gift that keeps on giving'. Interestingly, book sales in the UK on subjects relating to Nazism are not matched, in relative terms, by any other country in the world. So really: what does all this say about us, the reading public? This feature - with shades of light and dark - examines an ongoing, national publishing phenomenon, talking to authors and agents, historians, Nazi thriller writers and publishers among others.
Guests also include the comedian David Mitchell, Laurence Rees, Guy Walters and Henry Stevens, author of 'Hitler's Flying Saucers'.

The Post Code
When a national post-code system was introduced in the 1970s it met with fierce resistance: from postal workers, concerned about the pace of change, and a general public incensed by "useless symbols". Intended to aid sorting mechanisation, today postcodes are used by geodemographic databases to classify households for the benefit of commerce, government services and political canvassing.
As Royal Mail faces an uncertain future, Dominic Sandbrook charts the development of the post office and examines its impact on literacy, free speech, commerce and communication. Nina Perry's composed feature 'Spirit of the Beehive' explores our enduring relationship with the honeybee, lifting the lid of the beehive to hear some surprising lessons to be learnt through observing and working with bees, as well as how the life of bees inspires human endeavours in the arts and in business.
We follow a group of young people from Hackney in London who are passionate urban beekeepers. They work for The Golden Company, a social enterprise taking their beekeeping to new heights by installing bees on the roof of investment bank Nomura - where the bees are seen as a symbol of productivity and growth in the city.
Scientists at Sussex University explain how they are looking at ways to help the honeybee by eavesdropping in on their communication system, the waggle dance. We peek inside the bee-inspired Parisian Artist community La Ruche (the beehive) and are led through the bee sanctuary of the Natural Beekeeping Trust to discover the virtues of listening to bees.

FRI 09:00 The 3rd Degree (b042zcqm)
Series 4, Birmingham
A quiz show hosted by Steve Punt where a team of three University students take on a team of three of their professors.
Coming this week from the University of Birmingham, "The 3rd Degree" is a funny, lively and dynamic quiz show aimed at cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 listeners whilst delighting the current ones.
The Specialist Subjects in this episode are History of Medicine, Social Policy and American Studies and the questions range from the Russo-Japanese war of 1805 and Tristan & Isolde to Candy Crush Corner and monkey glands...
What Remains
Four short stories from Emma Donoghue's new collection Astray. These fact-inspired fictions, about travels to, in and from North America, focus on emigrants, runaways or drifters all gone astray for love or money, under duress or incognito. Emma's compassionate imagination crosses borders of race, law, sex, and sanity bringing the reader through a scattered scrap-book of history.
What Remains, read by Liza Ross, imagines the old age of a sculptor couple, Frances Loring and Florence Wyle. Straying across the line between clarity and confusion this story explores the most painful space that can occur between people.
Dublin born Emma Donoghue is an emigrant twice over; she spent eight years in Cambridge doing a PHD before moving to southwest Ontario where she now lives. Emma is probably best known for her international bestseller Room, winner of the Roger's Writers' Trust Fiction prize and the Hughes & Hughes Irish novel of the year and a finalist for the Man Booker. Emma has also written The Sealed Letter, Landing, Life Mask alongside many short story collections, most recently Three and a Half Deaths. Emma has also written drama for radio, theatre and screen.

Capital, Episode 5
Spring has sprung in Pepys Road. The police investigation is going nowhere and Roger's deputy is hatching a plan to get him straight to the top.
Capital is read by Rafe Spall and begins in December 2007 with the residents of Pepys Road preparing for Christmas, but the cards they receive aren't what they expect.

FRI 14:15 The People's Post: A Narrative History of the Post Office (b018fmt7)
The Last Post
In 1969 the post office ceased being a government industry to become a nationalised industry. It avoided being sold off in the 1980s, only to face even bigger challenges in the 2000s: sustaining the costs of a huge labour force, and rivalry from digital communications. As it sits on the brink of privatisation, what does the Royal Mail mean today?
As Royal Mail faces an uncertain future, Dominic Sandbrook charts the development of the post office and examines its impact on literacy, free speech, commerce and communication. The Post Office has become a cherished social institution, linking people together and extending their vision outward into the wider world.
It's called Royal Mail but it should be known as the People's Post

FRI 22:30 Nurse (b03xf1k2)
Series 1, Episode 4
A brand new series starring Paul Whitehouse and Esther Coles, with Rosie Cavaliero, Simon Day, Cecilia Noble and Marcia Warren.
The series follows Elizabeth, a Community Psychiatric Nurse in her forties, into the homes of her patients (or Service Users in today's jargon). It recounts their humorous, sad and often bewildering daily interactions with the nurse, whose job is to assess their progress, dispense their medication and offer comfort and support.
Compassionate and caring, Elizabeth is aware that she cannot cure her patients, only help them manage their various conditions. She visits the following characters throughout the series:
Lorrie and Maurice: Lorrie, in her fifties, is of Caribbean descent and has schizophrenia. Lorrie's life is made tolerable by her unshakeable faith in Jesus, and Maurice, who has a crush on her and wants to do all he can to help. So much so that he ends up getting on everyone's nerves.
Billy: Billy feels safer in jail than outside, a state of affairs the nurse is trying to rectify. She is hampered by the ubiquitous presence of Billy's mate, Tony.
Graham: in his forties, is morbidly obese due to an eating disorder. Matters aren't helped by his mum 'treating' him to sugary and fatty snacks at all times.
Ray: is bipolar and a rock and roll survivor from the Sixties. It is not clear how much of his 'fame' is simply a product of his imagination.
Phyllis: in her seventies, has Alzheimer's. She is sweet, charming and exasperating. Her son Gary does his best but if he has to hear 'I danced for the Queen Mum once' one more time he will explode.
Herbert is an old school gentleman in his late Seventies. Herbert corresponds with many great literary figures unconcerned that they are, for the most part, dead.
Nurse is written by Paul Whitehouse and David Cummings, who have collaborated many time in the past, including on The Fast Show, Down the Line and Happiness.
Written by Paul Whitehouse and David Cummings with additional material from Esther Coles
Producers: Paul Whitehouse and Tilusha Ghelani

FRI 23:00 Blue Jam (b083m2qh)
Series 3, Episode 5
From the mind of Chris Morris leaks onto radio in this dreamlike combination of comedy and music. With Julia Davis, Kevin Eldon, David Cann, Mark Heap and Amelia Bullmore.
Are you still lying curare-still, seeking relief in feigning dead? Then welcome, oo-tazz welcome. Chris Morris is here to help you wallow in the melancholy, for third series of this subversive radio classic.
Immediately prior to Blue Jam's initial burst on radio, Chris Morris had caused a furore with Channel 4's Brass Eye. Yet Blue Jam managed to be a total departure from his previous work. Originally airing in the early hours on BBC Radio 1, it's a blend of ambient music, deadpan ( sometimes brutal ) sketches and offbeat monologues. A whole audio landscape of the subconscious, the ad-hoc low-fi sheen of production lending it a kind of verisimilitude.
In sharp contrast with the personality-led comedies of recent years, Blue Jam makes a virtue of anonymity. Borat scribe Pater Baynham and Father Ted creator Graham Linehan are among the writers. Rightly winning a clutch of Sony Awards, it remains unique - nothing before or after was remotely like it.
Scripted by Chris Morris, Peter Baynham, Robert Katz, Jane Bussman and David Quantick.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 1 in February 1999.
