Autobiography of Mark Twain
Episode 5
Read by Kerry Shale. Mark Twain maintained that the proper material for an autobiography was to talk about the things that interest you for the moment, as your views on this or that would give an insight into your character.
He also decreed that his autobiography should not be published until he'd been dead for 100 years so that he could feel free to speak his "whole frank mind." And his outspoken views on the Moro incident, and the conduct of the American forces in the Philippines, certainly show a very different side to the man who is famous for his childhood classics.

More Than Just Whale Music
Since Irving Teibel created his Environments label in the US in the late 1960s, recorded natural sound has been a commercial proposition, sought by city-dwellers to re-kindle elemental connections. And his recordings of rain falling in pine forests or sleepy lagoons, thunderstorms, waves crashing and birds singing were deemed significant enough for NASA to send into space on Voyager in 1977. A decade later in the UK, Duncan Macdonald launched WildSounds - initially to teach people to distinguish different birdsongs, but soon adding 'atmospheres' from the Amazon or the African veldt.
Christine Finn explores the appeal of recorded natural sound and how it's been manipulated by musicians since the first live broadcast of birdsong in 1924, when the cellist Beatrice Harrison duetted with a nightingale in her garden. When sound engineer Quentin Howard was launching Classic FM in 1992, he used a loop of birdsong recorded in his garden. Radio Birdsong drew appreciative comments from listeners who claimed it relaxed them. Psychologist Eleanor Ratcliffe is investigating why natural sounds hold this appeal.
Finn explores the boundaries between natural sound and ambient music, and hears from musician Kit Watkins how living in the mountains of Virginia caused him to use the natural sounds around him in his compositions; she meets Matthew Herbert, whose album One Pig uses natural sound of a different kind to trace the life of a pig, from birth to plate.
Finn discovers there's a lot more to recorded natural sound than just whale music, but also finds that whale music, far from simply wafting among New Age crystals, played a major role in launching the conservation movement of the 70s.

If you want owt - go down the market... They sell everything from pins to pearl earrings, from peaches to pig's trotters, from tripe to tiramisu. See the hanging, marbled haunches of beef down Butchers' Row. Smell the flowers, a fragrant dream. Taste the fresh silvery fish motorwayed down from the North Sea.
Some would say the Market is the last authentic part of the city centre. This northern city once textured by textiles has reinvented itself as a business and financial centre - it bristles with designer shops and bars. A cosmopolitan, twenty-four hour city. Yet slap bang in the centre is a shard of another city. And after countless makeovers, the Victorian City Market remains what it has always been; a place where you can get anything and see anything - a place teeming with life. A place bristling with stories. The market is the real face of the city - mucky, multicultural and magnificent.
'Market' is an umbrella series of six plays about people who work in and around its stalls. Each story is a self-contained quirky tale. Modern morality plays, with a whiff of the fantastical about them.

MON 14:00 Baroness Orczy - The Scarlet Pimpernel (b007khsk)
The Trap
Lady Marguerite witnesses first-hand how Sir Percy, the elusive hero, brazenly outwits his adversaries.
Baroness Orczy's enduring story first published in 1905 is a tale of high adventure and romantic heroism set at the time of the French Revolution. Read by Damian Lewis.
The hero, real identity Sir Percy Blakeney, is a formidable swordsman, master of disguise and always one step ahead of his pursuers, prompting the well-known retort, "They seek him here, they seek him there, those Frenchies seek him everywhere. Is he in heaven or is he in hell? That damned elusive Pimpernel."
The author, herself born into Hungarian nobility, reveals her sympathies towards royalty with a hero who takes on French revolutionaries, rescuing royalists condemned to die on the guillotine. Orczy's parents, themselves, abandoned their baronial estate in Hungary, in 1868, when there were fears of a peasant revolution. She married a struggling English artist, Montague MacLean Barstow, and began writing to supplement their meagre income. Together, they wrote The Scarlet Pimpernel as a stage play and then went on to novelise it.
Whilst awaiting replies from various publishers, The Scarlet Pimpernel went into production in the West End, where it ran for four years and broke several box-office records. It was the start of a successful writing career which eventually enabled Orczy to buy an estate in Monte Carlo. She died in Henley-on Thames in 1947.

WED 06:30 Jazz in the Open Air (b00szz26)
Jazz, a music first played in small clubs and now found in large concert halls, also has a long history of heading for the great outdoors.
Kevin LeGendre charts the story of jazz in the open air, starting with a teenage Louis Armstrong leading the band from the Home for Colored Waifs through the streets of New Orleans almost a century ago.
Other legendary jazz performers who swapped smoky interiors for notable fresh air appearances include Duke Ellington, who transformed the fortunes of his orchestra with a storming show at the Newport jazz festival in 1956, and saxophonist Sonny Rollins, who spent months practising high amongst the girders of the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City.
Kevin also hears from musician Gary Bartz, who formed a band without a piano player so that they were free to perform anywhere, and so could escape from the restrictions of the music industry. Offering the other side of the story, the acclaimed singer Bobby McFerrin reveals why he tries to avoid all outdoor performances. And bringing the story right up to the present, Kevin joins saxophonist Soweto Kinch under a flyover in Birmingham, where he has promoted a music festival amidst the concrete and thundering traffic for the past three years.
Producer John Goudie.
WED 07:00 The Infinite Monkey Cage (b00srjdj)
Series 2
Trust me, I'm a Scientist
Physicist Brian Cox and comedian Robin Ince continue their witty, irreverent and unashamedly rational look at the world according to science.
Brian and Robin are joined by special guests Ben Goldacre and comedian Dave Gorman to discuss the notion of trust in science. Why are people prepared to believe in magic and pseudoscience rather than empirical evidence, and does it matter? Science often appears open ended and evolving, a reason to mistrust it, especially when it can feel like we are bombarded with so much contradictory information. So is the scientific method the only way to truly test if something works, and why should we trust the scientists over alternative practitioners who many people would argue have helped them more than anything that comes out of a laboratory.

Comedy performers William Andrews and Greg McHugh explore the surreal and the absurd through characters and everyday situations in their first sketch show for BBC Radio 4. Along with live sketches recorded in front of an appreciative Glasgow audience, the show also features studio based sketches with Will & Greg as "themselves" exploring a particular scenario and utilizing their hilarious relationship with each other and their trademark skew-whiff logic. The studio based sketches allows them to play with sound and atmosphere of the radio sketch form and blend them with the live audience material.
Together with brand new regulars and one-off sketches, the series explores the bizarrely familiar, the recognisably odd and the upbeat offbeat way of life that only exists when the planet is touched by Will and Greg.

Jagger in Jail
The History Plays
By Nigel Smith
Jagger in Jail
The History Plays are a series of two-hander plays by Vent author Nigel Smith which are imagined conversations at key moments in recent history, moments that have permanently changed the British psyche. Starting with Mick Jagger's conviction for drug possession and the surprising pro-Jagger line taken in a Times editorial; through the fragmented morality of John Stonehouse; the Indian summer of patriotism over the Falklands; the death of Diana; and the end of the Blair years, The History Plays are a satirical and thoughtful exploration of huge social forces played out in small human dramas. This is a series about the promises and pitfalls of history, the points of conflict. But what's really significant is what these moments say about our attitudes and assumptions now.
JAGGER IN JAIL
Written and directed by Nigel Smith
Produced by Gareth Edwards
Starring Kayvan Novak ("Facejacker") as Mick Jagger and Blake Harrison ("The Inbetweeners") as Jim
It is 1967, the summer of love and Mick Jagger, lead singer of the Rolling Stones, is in prison starting his three-month sentence for drug possession. His trial - and particularly his sentence - has both scandalised and split public opinion.
Jagger in Jail imagines the conversation that might have taken place between Mick and a cellmate, Jim, during what turned out to be his only night behind bars. As the night passes Jim and Mick find that while they have a fair bit in common, society's plans for them could not be more different. And Jim isn't too happy about it..

FRI 06:30 Inside the Elephant Mind (b00qxgzw)
Everyone knows that elephants are clever but science is only now beginning to reveal just how smart they are. Andrew Luck-Baker joins British and Kenyan researchers on the East African savannah who are revealing the depths of the elephant mind with the help of a huge loudspeaker in the back of a Land Rover.
By playing different sound recordings (of elephants, lions and people) at elephant family groups, the scientists are probing the sophistication of elephant memory and pachyderm numerical skills. They are also testing whether elephants can distinguish between different human languages. Anecdotes suggest they can.
Another team of British researchers have been using urine samples and smelly clothes in other experiments to probe the agility of elephant grey matter.
All this has been taking place on the plains of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, under the looming presence of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is home to the world's longest running study of a single elephant population. Started by journalist-turned-biologist Cynthia Moss almost forty years ago, the study is a continuing record of every facet of the lives of every elephant living there. Cynthia Moss says the Amboseli data is like "gold" for the visiting animal psychologists to make sense of their experiments.
It turns out that that elephants are more intelligent than humans in some respects. For example, elephants have a much better short-term working memory than we do and out-perform people on at least one numerical skill. But why might they need to distinguish between the English language and the language of the local Masaai people? And what does this research tell us about the evolution of animal intelligence in general?
