The Girl in the Picture
Kim Phuc, subject of an iconic picture from the Vietnam War, tells her story as she's reunited with the ITN reporter who helped save her life 38 years ago.
The image of a nine year old girl screaming as she ran naked down a road in Trang Bang after suffering extreme burns in a Napalm chemical attack became one of the most famous photographs of the Vietnam War. But what happened to the 'Girl in the Picture'?
In an emotional meeting, former ITN reporter Christopher Wain - who helped to save her life that day - is reunited with Kim for the first time in 38 years.
They recall the events of June 8th 1972 and Kim hears for the first time the lengths to which Chris went to get her life-saving treatment.
She tells how Nick Ut's Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph has helped and haunted her in equal measure. She explains how she was recruited as a 'symbol of war' before finally escaping Government control by fleeing to Canada.
She managed to live a normal life for a while but was discovered by the press again in the 1990s. She soon realised she had to take control of the photograph and decided to use her fame to help others by establishing a charity for child victims of war called 'The Kim Phuc Foundation'.
The burns Kim suffered in 1972 left her scarred for life and still take their toll on her body. She's in constant pain and has to take regular breaks. But it doesn't stop her living a busy life.
As part of the programme, Kim also meets Ali Abbas, who lost both his arms and sixteen members of his family in the Iraq War. The pair share their experiences and Kim offers him advice on living a normal life and finding a way to forgive.
The programme is presented by Christopher Wain.

When Amy Ellis's fiancé, medical student Wilfred Hope, visits them one wet and stormy evening, the atmosphere in the house seems more peculiar than ever. Wilfred has no idea what can be going on - until he takes a look behind the screen in the parlour....
Read by Michael Jayston
First broadcast weekly on the BBC National Programme in 1930, with each author: Hugh Walpole, Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers, Anthony Berkeley, EC Bentley and Father Ronald Knox reading their own part of the story.
To reflect the changes of storyteller, we have a different reader for each part of this new version:
When first broadcast, some listeners were puzzled by the method employed in planning a collaborative detective story. If the whole thing were indeed to be written like a game of consequences, with each new writer picking up where the last one left off, how could any consistency be achieved, and how could a satisfactory plot be managed and concluded?
Lord Peter Wimsey creator, Dorothy L Sayers, who co-ordinated the different contributions, explained the process: "The first three authors carried the story along according to their own several fancies; while the last three used their wits, in consultation, to unravel the clues presented to them by the first three."

Katie Hims - A Small Piece of Silence
A Small Piece of Silence by Katie Hims
A Small Piece of Silence started out in a very different way to most radio plays. After David Bower's striking performance as Quasimodo in Radio Four's production of The Hunchback of Notredame, the producer Susan Roberts suggested a contemporary play be written specially for him. After many initial conversations with David who plays the lead character Joe in the play, Katie Hims' story began to emerge.
In A Small Piece of Silence, Joe who has been Deaf since he was born , works in an ordinary council office . Every day he makes the same journey to work on the bus, seeing the same people . Then one day a young girl signs her name to him. A_N_G_E_L.
Joe has been working in the council's housing office for 17 years. Apart from one small promotion he has remained in the same job surrounded by the same people . Vernon has been there for the same amount of time. He eats Joe's food and talks too fast in the pub ..but Joe goes along with it.
Into their world comes new office recruit Shelly who begins to fall for Joe. Until Joe realises that she is having a relationship with Richard Humble , the leader of the council
At the end of Shelly's first week there is a huge fire in a nearby block of flats. Joe learns that Angel was one of the people who has died.
And so Joe's life is changed forever as he embarks on a quest, turning detective to find out what has happened.
A Small Piece of Silence is a love story, detective story but, using sound, it attempts to give us a picture of the world of someone who can't hear. It examines the issues around how society deals with Deafness through the character of Joe.

Katie Hims

MON 14:00 Bill Connor - Cassandra's Good Food Guide (b00vcpbm)
Episode 1
"Cassandra" (Bill Connor) was a Fleet Street legend during the Daily Mirror's heyday, with his column running non-stop, not counting global hostilities, for 35 years until 1967.
He could often be cantankerous and comically opinionated in what was described as his "polished-up barrack room" style of writing. Some of Cassandra's best columns, however, were not about people or institutions he wanted to admonish, but humorous personal tales about eating and drinking.
Here, we are encouraged to come into the garden by dead of night to listen to the rubbery, rustling noise of a vegetable growing in "How I Like My Cabbage." We learn from him the horrors of being brought up on "Miss Cowie's Porridge" ("If ever a word describing a food had the sound of its meaning, it is 'Porridge' - the slup and slur and costive slirrup of the uneatable.") Then there are the "Scrap Cakes" - his brilliant invention of artillery food that married couples can safely throw at each other ("They are convenient in size, fit the hand like a grenade and do not mark the carpet.") In the description of his calming encounter with the admirable Grocer in Harrods, he is on the trail of "Fried Za Zas", while in "The Prose of Sauce" he reveals "I have been a reader of sauce-bottle labels ever since I first got to eye-level with the kitchen table."
It has been said about Cassandra that he was outwardly stubborn and prickly, but inwardly a warm and friendly cove. An argument with him ended, as a rule, with his twinkling eyes peering over the steamed-up spectacles.
That is exactly the side of the man conveyed by this collection of columns.

"Her adventure had been taken at a moment of major personal change; mine was beginning at a moment that could change the world".

Then in her late thirties she was already a popular and successful novelist, but her 14 year marriage to Archie Christie had recently ended and her comfortable life at Sunningdale had become oppressive.
In the first of five readings from his book, Andrew Eames describes how 75 years later on, on the eve of the second Gulf War, he set out to trace Agatha's journey and explore her reasons for making it.

Behind The Screen is a collaborative detective serial written by six members of the Detection Club. It was first broadcast weekly on the BBC National Programme in 1930, with each contributor reading his or her own part of the story.
The six authors were Hugh Walpole, Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers, Anthony Berkeley, EC Bentley and Father Ronald Knox.

Out Damned Spot, by Dorothy L Sayers
Sarah Badel reads the next instalment of the 1930s 'whodunit' continued by Dorothy L Sayers.

THU 06:30 Women of the New Wave (b00r8hhz)
Singer Pauline black meets some of the women who were in the vanguard of punk and new wave music, and asks what their legacy is for today's female artists. Punk offered women the chance to get on stage and be themselves, free from the constraints of a previously male dominated music industry. Artists such as Siouxsie Sioux, Poly Styrene and Gaye Advert started their own bands and expressed themselves in ways that female musicians hadn't been allowed to previously. They refused to be judged on their looks and asserted the right to sing about subjects that interested them rather than about broken hearts and lost loves. As punk evolved into a wider musical spectrum that encompassed New Wave and Two Tone, bands such as The Selecter emerged through which singers such as Pauline Black tackled issues of racism and sexism in their lyrics. Thirty years on, she asks some of those groundbreaking women what they think they've achieved for women of their and subsequent generations.

FRI 06:30 The Carabinieri Art Squad (b00sm8tn)
Writer and historian Alex Butterworth travels to Rome to meet the Carabinieri squad in charge of protecting Italy's priceless cultural heritage.
A helicopter circles overhead while Italian police officers and archaeologists peer into a 30-foot deep hole made in a field outside Rome. The land may look like ordinary farmland, but beneath the ground there are in fact Etruscan tombs full of treasures. The hole has been made by a group of "tombaroli"- tomb raiders who come in the night to smash open hidden tombs, and grab the artefacts inside. They sell them on to dealers, who in some cases offer them to museums for a massive price.
The police officers in attendance are a members of a special branch of the Italian Carabinieri (the military police) which was set up to try to deal with the problem of stolen art in the country. The unit, known as the Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Comando Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale in Italian) has its main headquarters in Rome and branches throughout the country. Its job is to try to stop the looting of Italy's cultural treasures- from artefacts in excavations to paintings and statues in country churches.
To try to stop the trafficking, carabinieri officers carry out regular patrols on archaeological sites, They also check items of from auction houses and exhibitions against their vast database of stolen goods. Other officers carry out checks on more contemporary artworks to make sure that they're not forged. Since the unit began in 1969, the success rate has been high, with thousands of artworks recovered.
Alex Butterworth is in Rome to watch the work of the Carabinieri TPC at first hand. He follows the archaeological section on patrol and sees how the huge database is used to recover stolen works which are sometimes changed beyond almost all recognition by the thieves to avoid detection. For example, one vast painting was stolen and then cut into several pieces and sold as separate items.
While watching the officers at work, Alex explores the changing nature of cultural protection and asks what Italy's determination to find its treasures says about the mood of the country.
Producer Emma Kingsley.

Amy Intervenes, by EC Bentley
Inspector Rice probes Paul Dudden's death. Gunnar Cauthery reads the next instalment of the 1930s 'whodunit' continued by EC Bentley.
